Good weekend to be visiting Penang. It’s the weekend just after “kwai chit” aka Hungry Ghost Festival (15th day of the 7th month on the Chinese Lunar calendar). Many ethnic Chinese tend to stay home so Penang is “ghostly” quiet. 😊 Has anyone seen Tong Hooi Kopitiam, where “Famous Ah Leng Char Koay Teow” is located, so empty? We walked right in for lunch at 11.30am and plonked ourselves on some seats and ordered. Order was delivered within 15 mins. It did start to fill up in the few minutes through. So perhaps just good timing. Her CKT is still excellent. Full of flavour, smoky goodness from the “wok hei”. ❤️ Large fresh prawns. Some may question on value for money aspect given her RM10 price but to me, you can’t put a price on best in class tasty CKT. 😛

One of the infamous Char Koay Teow (CKT) in Penang. We ordered one with egg but without chilies and one with a lot of chilies with egg. There is a side stall selling Lor Bak but there are NOT many choices. For me, the CKT tasted okay but exorbitant priced, and the Lor Bak is below average in taste and value. But anyway, Penang has the best CKT in Penang or Butterworth, KL, Singapore, and some says in ASIA.

First time visited this place last weekend make sure to come early if you not want to wait longer as this place quite popular. Its open 10.30 first time try and so yummy kind choose original or special with or with chili sauce. For me just order original one. Make sure to also buy some drink in the restaurant if not you need to pay extra 0.5 per person. Will come here again when back to penang

If you are wondering what the hype is, it is the type of char kuey teow with little noodles but lots of ingredients in it. It wasn't a big portion but it comes with large prawns and you can add duck egg for additional RM 1. One thing I like about the place is that they insist to fry by order, hence able to maintain the quality. Which also explains the 40 mins wait. Parking is challenging here and since it is a long wait, do park in proper parking and walk over. There may even be a longer queue for public holidays.

Came here around 2 pm, had to que about 30 minutes...but understandable and already expected.. the chef make them one by one maintaining quality. Good quality prawns and unique mantis prawn for the special one. If I knew the portion would be so little for me I would have made it jumbo size or order 2 plates. Good taste.

The chow koay teow of perfect doneness... A place where customers rather come and sit down for 1 hr while waiting for the CKT to heat up its wok.. only start frying at 11 but you will witness the place already filled with people and with a queue. But the wait is worth it .. the taste is exquisite... The prawns are fresh... The spiciness is just at the right level and the wok hei... How I wish I could have one right now... The plates you see stacked up in the pic without the towel are the order aka the queue.... Which amazes me how they know who is who... Anyway please come ... Won't regret ...

Must have char kuey teow in Penang! 💯 Boss was so friendly and allowed us to eat in our car with their plates and cutleries during MCO! 🤩

We were recommended to try out this place by a local and boy it did not disappoint as it was hands down one of the best I've ever had! We arrived around 2pm on a Sat and had ordered the Special with duck egg. We had to wait for approx 30mins but it was all worthwhile. The char kway teow was served piping hot to us with big springy marinated prawns, even distribution of flavors across the entire dish and a nice spicy kick from the chilli - the whole dish was simply amazing and left us wanting for more! Will definitely return! Tip: while waiting for the char kway Teow, we've had also ordered the lor bak as well and it was a great appetizer to tide through the wait.

3.5 / 5 if google did half stars. Whilst everyone raves about this place and says its the best in town, I personally don't think it's warranted. It tasted good, the prawns were plump and large, but the rest was so-so. It was lacking in seasoning so it tasted quite bland, the chinese sausage had a mealy texture and no chew like usual, and overall it was good, but I have had better CKT in town and not had to wait as long.

We came here because the near by Siam CKT is not open for two days. It’s within walking distance to this one. We ordered at th stall, just give the lady your table number and type of CKT. They have standard, duck egg and added crayfish versions. It took 30-40min, the taste is slightly above average but not wow. It still lacks the charred flavour for its rice noodle.

The legendary char kway teow in Penang, situated inside Tong Hooi Restaurant. Popular for their fresh giant prawn on top of your char kway teow. Nowadays, daughters continue to run Mr. Ah Leng legacy. Her wok hei skill just looks the same as the late father. During lunch time, it takes a long queue to get your plate on the table. Mine took about 45 minutes. Price has rising high, but still worth it. Recommended.

The best, but only if it is fried by the dragon(ah leng) himself. The branch in Datuk Keramat fried by his daughter/son pales in comparison- dont bother.

Nice char koay teow, fresh and big prawn compare to many others place i try before. Price toward higher end. Portion consider standard penang size. There is one lo bak stall beside, can try and pretty fresh as well. Went around 6-7pm, sitting outdoor have amount of flies around which i m not really like much. Can consider sit indoor.

My brother came back from KL and wanted to enjoy Ah Leng’s Char Koay Teow. We ordered 6 plates of CKT: one without chili and the others with chili. We also ordered a plate of loh bak, prawn fritters, tofu, and soy skin. We as a family feel that Ah Leng’s CKT is arguably the best CKT in Penang now. Lorong Selamat “Red Cap Lady” CKT standard has noticeably dropped. Siam Road CKT - wait is too long for us. Each plate is RM9 and comes with 2 large prawns, large egg, and garlic chives. I love the balance of chili and garlic flavor. No complaint from me. This is how I like my CKT. The chili kick in the CKT was a bit strong. We also notice that the amount of minced garlic used is less now than a few years ago. The loh bak and prawn fritter are really good too. The loh bak diameter is quite big and not too tiny like other stalls. The prawn fritters - you can see sizeable meats among the dough. A family friend from KL commented - Ah Leng’s CKT serving size is small. I replied saying that most famous CKT stalls in Penang serve this way.

Absolutely the bomb. Super a lot of wok hei and smokey. Perfectly flavoured. Big prawns is juicy and sweet. Uncle cooking nonstop. RM9.50 for a big plate. Long waiting time. Waited 30 minutes for the plate but super worth it. This is the place to go when craving ckt at night, as most popular ckt places are closed by evening.

As a Penangite, i am not recommend anyone to come for this char koay teow because the service is very bad, they don't even want to look at your face or listen to you when you place order and eventually you have to wait around 1 hour for your food. However, the taste is not too bad.

Love the big juicy prawns! However, the char kway teow lack wok hei and not charred enough. Also lacking ku chai and the siham is way too tiny I think. Had to wait for more than 1 hour on a late Sunday afternoon.

This place is overrated. Prawns are huge and fresh but I think the char kuey teow lacks wok hei & flavour. Portion is quite small too. We ordered extra chilli but it wasn’t even slightly spicy. Make sure to fill your stomach with some light food before coming. We waited for more than 45 mins even though there’s only a few tables ahead of us.

Yes Koay teow is delicious. We are the 4th or 5th table reach around 10.15am. waiting time about 1hrs. The Koay teow assistant have a special way to record your order, using chilli sauce 😉.

Came here on a thursday noon and no need to wait. Food arrived within 3 minutes. We ordered the special koay teow with 4 big prawns and mantis prawn and some small cockles. Each plate cost RM15.50 and i would say the price is fair. Quality is good just that its lack of wok hei. If you are in Penang for a visit, come and check it out as they are one of the legendary fried koay teow seller here.

People says that it is small portion, true. People says that its take a long time to wait, it is another true. But for me, for the first time to arrive at penang, and the first time to try penang chat koay teow, it is delicious, you got two big shrimp, if special you got 4 big shrimp and some kind of special thingy. If a long time to wait, it is just to tell that a lot of people eating here, so they need to make it to all the people come. So for you people who want to come here, prep yourself that the waiting time is long, and the portions is small, but for me the taste is great. 06.10.22

Used to be better, but now the taste is average. It's lacking wokhei. But if you like extras in your CKT, then this is the place. RM14+ for a decent plate of special CKT with 4 good sized shrimps and some mantis prawn. Pro tip: Drive a fancier car to get better service.

  • 5/5 Yun Y. 2 years ago on Google
The special char kuey teow is amazing. Not too dry, Taste is great Extremely fresh large prawns( the freshest among the charkueyteow vendors)

  • 3/5 Ralph Y. 3 years ago on Google
Price a little step for it's portion. A small plate at the price of RM 9.50. I could find better char koay teow (stir-fried flat rice noodle) else compared to what it's banner said "FAMOUS". But I do compliment it's prawn to be fresh.

  • 5/5 Amanda L. 4 months ago on Google
If you expect a 1hr wait, then actually this place is quite good. The aunty selling drinks is also quite friendly. The prawns are HUGE, and the addition of mantis prawn (lai liu har) is quite salty and special.

  • 3/5 Lisa C. 2 years ago on Google
The char kueh teow was orange in colour, not the usual thick soya sauce colour. But the taste was quite palatable and the prawns given are medium size. Overall I find the char kueh teow was ok only. The laksa from the stall next to it was better as the ikan kembong didn't have fishy smell. The parking was a bit challenging because there is not much available

We used to have this CKT every time we visit penang. But we noticed this time the taste was not as delicious as the 1 fried by her father. Next time we come penang, we will source another nicer CKT. Long waiting time +/-45 mins. Price on high side, regular RM11, special RM16.

  • 4/5 Eston 4 months ago on Google
Rm11 just for a regular plate. Personally I think it's overpriced for that small portion, definitely tourist price. Taste good but it's a taste u can get at a lot of other places in Penang. What adds a little uniqueness are their big prawns, other than that nothing much special. Waited for around an hour for the food to arrive. It's a touristy place as most people who visit are either local or foreign tourists. Suggest to go there before 1pm because after that it's gonna be packed and u may have to wait for a seat.

  • 4/5 Hock Sing T. 4 years ago on Google
Very delicious fried koay teow with wok hei. Although price at RM15 per serving, with 4 very large prawn, duck egg, mantis prawn, cockles are really value for money. Compare to my favourite lorong selamat fried koay teow, taste wise here lost a bit, but in terms of waiting time an value for money, here is much better. I also tried its prawn fritters and lobak but so so normal standard only

Never you see me again. Because see the photo " Nonorder drink we will charge 0.50 per person" literally they really do it, despite me and my wife order drink, my daughter did not. I think this is a disgrace to Malaysian food culture. Apologise, i will NOT BE BACK. Food is so so. If you are going for the 2 prawns, please come. Otherwise, the chef needs to have more practice. Jia you.

There were lots of rave about this CKT and I personally felt it's over rated. The prawns are big and juicy but their CKT is lack of flavour.. I dont think this is the best one in Penang. Had to wait really long too because they have forgotten our order ☻

Came here at around 12 where there are people occupying most of the tables already. Luckily my wife managed to grab a table first and ordered for a plate of nice CKT with duck egg + spicy to share after I dropped her off to find parking We waited around 30 mins for the CKT and the only part we regretted is we ordered for sharing because it’s one of the best CKT to put into my list to revisit next time. The blend of the duck egg with the kuew teow and the spiciness. Just perfect.

The best duck egg CKT I’ve had in Penang. LOVED it! It was RM10.50 for a small portion with duck egg. It’s about 30mins wait time but was totally worth it. The kopitiam also serves really good drinks.

11 rm for this plate, 2 prawns, several cockles. Lacking in taste, only good is that it arrived hot. Luckily we went on a late afternoon at around 3-4pm on a Friday so there wasn’t any queue. The fried eggs are tasty but not tasty enough to warrant a return.

  • 4/5 Nklauss S P. 9 months ago on Google
Like the taste, but the texture a bit soggy compare to siam road. I expect Their duck egg color bit more yellowishs but turn out too pale like chicken egg. Their normal order is spicy, so if u dont want it better tell them. Overall is good but i still prefer the taste of siam road .

Less oily, good fragrance, generous amount of large prawns, mantis prawn and duck eggs, fried using fresh oil. Probably the best char koay teow I have ever tasted. Excellent fried noodle.

  • 4/5 Joyce Lim Yi P. 1 year ago on Google
Rm 10 for a normal size 2 huge, fresh prawns Was a bit skeptical when it looked quite pale the CKT, but it proved me wrong - it was quite yummy, the best in Penang so far I've had But portion is small for that price And the siham, is damn small, the smallest I've encountered In the same shop, got 2 other stalls, 1 selling lor bak - not bad, just limited options; and another stall is selling laksa - didn't try it out Parking will be difficult And also need to wait for some time for your food due to high demand Waited for mine for about 15mins on a weekday afternoon about 1pm

  • 5/5 Renee H. 1 year ago on Google
Very delicious! Definitely a must-try if it’s your first time in Penang. The wait was a little long though and the portions are absolutely small. Will be able to comfortably finish 2 plates myself. 🫢

  • 2/5 Ice Sp L. 1 year ago on Google
Giving 2 stars only due to the lack of ethics by the seller. They took order and stacked with table number, by right should follow sequence and will be able to reduce the queue gradually. However, seller fried their noodles not following sequence and skipped certain table to serve other. The reason they give was that the “other” orders were either without bean sprouts or without chili where they said they will serve those first, and they skipped ours to pack those take away where the take away order was made after mine. So, beware that your table will be those that might be sacrificed by the seller and they without courtesy to inform you that too. Small portion, but the prawns were fresh and juicy (that’s the only plus point). Overall, queue from 1245noon and get to eat at 2.10pm, and other tables that arrived later get served first, until I walked to check with the seller again about our order. And we are dining during weekday, not even weekend.

Ah Leng Char Koay Teow has been around for ages. He started frying this hawker delicacy in Kimberley Street and was very popular with the local people. Waiting to enjoy eating a plate of his CKT would entail a long wait. Then for some inexplicable reason, he relocated to a coffeeshop opposite the former Federal Cinema, which is of course Starview Restaurant, now. . Due to some rental problems, he shifted to the coffeeshop directly opposite and after sometime, it was taken over by his son and daughter who have plied the delicacy since then. Where did Ah Leng go? For those who like the Dad's frying, he is now at this location, which is, incidentally his house. He has consistently fried nice CKT over the years even though he doesn't fry over charcoal fire. No 'Wok Hei' fragrance but is delicious with a pleasant taste without being clogged in excessive oil. A very different style of frying which will make you come back for more. So, if you miss his CKT, head to this place from about 6 in the evening until 10. Call to confirm if he is open so as not to make a wasted trip if he closes. Bon Appetit.
