Really liked this Museum. As it gives alot of history, to much to take in in one go. Will definitely visit again in future. Only bad experience was searching for the graveyard. As we hiked our way across the whole area but found nothing. In my opinion- worth a visit.

Very interesting history with lots of interesting facts mixed up with modern stories. The aquarium is very dilapidated and needs serious attention (very disappointing). Affordable, but not doing much from a tourism point of view, especially with all the passenger liners stopping in the Mosselbay habour.

In my opinion it is an essence of a good historic museum dedicated to a certain event, in this particular case to the discovery of the trading route to India by the Portugiese. There is a replica 15th century caravel as the central exhibit and a lot of detailed information about the age of great discoveries, shipment and navigation in the Middle Ages. Several other minor exhibitions (e.g. dedicated to the ocean life) are available on the same premises. Definitely worth a visit if you are in Mossel Bay.

Reliving the history is something that opens the mind. Then, the Milkwood that is over 500 years old; impressive.

We went to the museum to show our daughter the post office tree as well as the boat. The shell collection was also very interesting in one of the buildings. Most of the displays are dusty and need a good dust. Due to COVID, nobody is allowed on the boat.

What an insightful and affordable experience! Aim to spend at least 2 hours on the grounds as there are lots of history to explore and wear comfortable shoes if you're planning on walking to each mark.

Fascinating visit - do also support the Marine museum when visiting and allow some hours.

It was one of the best informative museums I have visited. Beautifull paintings, full of color. It's such a vibrant, colorful museum. Amazing the skill that those early travelers had.

Decent entry fee. The granary was unfortunately closed. The shell museum is small. Maritime museum was a nice visit, but the ship could not be entered due to renovations. I feel the place has potential but perhaps will be better after all the renovations.

Hier gibt es ein hervorragendes nachgebautes Schiff von Dias zu besichtigen. Und nicht zu vergessen den Postbaum. Zu empfehlen!

  • 3/5 Henry C. 2 years ago on Google
Very interesting museum about Bartholomew Dias and the spice trade routes. Small aquarium which interested the kids. And the postal tree is perfect for a photo opportunity. Some museum displays are ageing a bit and could do with freshing up. Some items were also not labelled. Overall a good quick visit.

Expectations were low- but in reality a really great outing! There’s more than “just” a 🛳! There’s a minimum aquarium and a post tree, and oh yes, one of the oldest Catholic Churches! Well worth a visit:)

The museum was great fun. We like to learn more interesting facts about the world and that was fun. The touch tank was the bestvpart as my kids got the opportunity to touch the sea creatures anr that gave them n hands on experience that they wil never forget. The liked to go on the boat but the tiuch tank was there altemit favorite thing we had to go back 3 times.

Always an interesting visit. Love to learn about our history and see all the artifacts. Unfortunately due to COVID you are not allowed to climb on board the Bartolomeu Dias ship for a more personal experience.

  • 5/5 Eileen S. 5 years ago on Google
Wow it's so interesting here! From plants to boats to live sea creatures to artefacts and much much more. One always learns something new when coming here😊 The whole museum is beautiful and there's so much to see and do. There's something for everyone! My favourite part is the aquarium, I love animals. Stepping onto the huge caravel made me feel as though I had traveled back in time. It is absolutely amazing. I highly recommend walking the long route through the garden too because it is beautiful. The staff is very friendly and everything is always in a very good condition

  • 5/5 Lloyd De J. 7 years ago on Google
I had less time to explore it than I wanted, however it is a fantastic place to visit. I especially loved the old photos of various mountain passes in the region, being someone who enjoys exploring passes. The setting is amazing, it has beautiful trees, a stunning view of the coastline, a gorgeous garden with grass and outside exhibits. I'll be back, there's more to explore.

Very nice and informative museum and gallery. The replica ship looked good and you can get on board and imagine how the sailors travelled all the way there. Recommended.

I enjoyed the time spent there. Very interesting to see some of the artifacts that were recovered from ships that sank around our coast line. Also visit the shell museum next to Diaz museum.

Undergoing some revamp and renovation so not at its best ( in exchange no entry fee)! This is a must visit experience to Mossel Bay it is truly amazing to see and learn about. Had the pleasure of speaking with Kenneth the water colour artist which was a lifetime experience….thank you sir.

Unfortunately the exhibits are down due to renovations, so what could be a good visit was disappointing. The Shell Museum is in a terrible state. Exhibits are falling off and incomplete and a poor sight for the foreign visitors who come here. No signage at the site to point you on the paths or to the various points of interest , so not a great experience.

  • 2/5 Yolandi M. 11 months ago on Google
They busy revamp the whole museum. So you can really enjoy the whole story

  • 3/5 Joe L. 1 year ago on Google
It's OK and the replica ship was awesome, but beyond that not much to do unless you are a hard core historian with lots of time to read.

  • 5/5 Jurgens . 1 year ago on Google
One needs to appreciate the effort in creating this institution with building a boat into a exhibition

  • 3/5 Mozgal 1 year ago on Google
A good portrayal of historical facts ... not many 'museum' displays .... unfortunately the few glass case displays are in one's own shadow. Due to the lighting issues one had difficulty viewing and reading the information in the glass display cases.

  • 4/5 Andre H. 1 year ago on Google
There is some renovations going on around the museum area and the sign of the gate said staff only so it was a bit confusing. Fortunately a security guard gave us guidance. There is parking very close to the museum plus a few restaurants The museum cost was r30 pp . It's a small museum with some maritime history of South Africa as well as replica ship which is no doubt the main attraction. You allowed to board the wooden ship There are also a few other attractions on the grounds, post office tree and boot , old cottages, fountain and some nice views of the beach It's something worth doing if you in the area

  • 4/5 Lorenzo R. 1 year ago on Google
Nice museum full of history during the period of Diaz, R20 entrance fee and R20 to go onto to boat. Worth seeing while in MosselBay

  • 4/5 Debbie S. 1 year ago on Google
I loved looking at the history and the ship itself. You are allowed to get on the ship and go below deck which is really cool. Sadly there was two small boys running around and jumping on the beds which is specifically asked not to do. This is not only bothersome but could lead to some damage. Some rules might be needed for supervision. I would definitely recommend, it is quite informative!

This is one of my favourite museums to visit. Nice to see that theŕe is some changes happening. The 'skulpie' museum moved to this location as well. It is affordable fun for the whole family.

It was awesome to see a replica boat that was sailed by Bartholomeu Dias from Portugal to South Africa. His journey took him 6 months to reach the Cape coastline where he experienced heavy winds and strong sea conditions.

  • 3/5 Cath de W. 1 year ago on Google
I dont know why there is so much youngsters working there, they don't care about the public, they are only interested into talking to each other. 3 young people sitting at the caravelle, chatting away. I asked them a question about the caravelle, they told me they dont know and keep on chatting. So what is the purpose of having staff and they dont know anything except chatting to each other in their mother langage?

  • 5/5 Monica N. 1 year ago on Google
Really enjoyed the museum, very interesting and informative. It's R40 per adult and that includes going into the caravelle and you can see how it looked like inside. It's in a complex with different things that you can see, there's a little aquarium that you can also go to and it's all included in the price.

Very Nice and Educational, it is amazing to relize how far the human race has come from.

  • 3/5 Keith L. 1 year ago on Google
The museum it self is really good. The only thing I found was when we were waking around in the garden area there were boards with the plants names and descriptions on what they were used for but i was not sure which plants were being referred to as there were many different plants in front of the different boards. The boards also had braille writing on but some of the boards were deep inside the garden area where a blind person would not be able to access the braille writing. I would suggest a painting of the plants leaves be painted on the information boards to be able to identify which plant the board was referring to.

😡😡😡😡 We went to visit the museum twice but couldn’t go in. According to google, the closing times are at 16:30pm. When you get there the guard says it only operates from 9am to 2pm??? Really? The beaches are closed... you try to make alternate plans to entertain the family, and then they don’t put in the effort to keep one of the main attractions open for longer!! So disappointed! Twice!! Please at least update your operating hours on google! 😡

Wonderful time with the kids, exploring the replica built and now housed in the museum, truly amazing for kids. They also enjoyed the sea shells and aquarium part of the museum. The history of the first christian chapel in southern Africa, the post tree, and the reason for the Munro’s in Mosselbay, very memorable!

For a small town like Mossel Bay, this well maintained museum desirves a 5 star and must be visited when here! Cheap entrance as well! Spacious Museum grounds includes a small aquarium which our toddlers enjoyed, also beautiful lawns outside. The Diaz ship was obviously the museum climax! History very interesting. Small curio shop. Send a postcard from the oldest "post office" in South Africa (a post shoe under a tree). Museum situated in the nice Mossel Bay old town.

The replica of Dias' ship is amazing. Large collection of drawn maps on display.

  • 3/5 Wybrand G. 3 years ago on Google
This museum provides some insight into the traveling of Diaz around the point of Africa. The museum has some really good replicas of the history during this time. Sadly the museum has fallen into the same trap of so many other museums around the world, with most the finances going into upkeep of a smaller and smaller area of the museum. There seems to be very little evidence of continous improvement. Also, other than one or two displays in the entrance exhibitions, so little is done around displaying the intergation of the cultures in South Africa. Very little reference is made regarding the tribes that were met along the Cape and who they were. For instance the fountain in the musuem complex provides a fantastic example of a very relevant cultural historical sight for sone of the local inhabitants, but is almost lost if not for a small reference to it.

Drove all the way from George to see museum, because according to everywhere online they are open on Saturdays and Sundays. I tried calling to confirm but phone as engaged for more than an hour. When we got there the security guard in the stall, while scratching in her nose, told us that they are closed on Sundays. Really, just update your times online so other people get spared a trip.
