Enjoyable Mothers Day Lunch My first ever visit to the George in the beautiful village of Great Amwell. From the moment we walked in, the staff were friendly, helpful and attentive. Drinks arrived promptly, as did each of the 3 courses throughout our stay. It has a nice cosy atmosphere and the food is not only presented very well, it tastes delicious. More restaurant quality food in a pub setting. It’s not the cheapest place in the world, with menu prices touching on London prices, but if you are in demand, and people are happy to pay…then what can you expect I would return and recommend for a lovely meal

Food was mediocre and bland. And one of our orders was left off. The staff then denied we had ever ordered it!! Then we were given the wrong bill. Just as well we are honest because someone else would have been presented for a bill that was twice the amount of theirs. In addition, we were extremely annoyed by the staff insisting that we had not placed the order for the food that we had in fact ordered. This is not a good way to do business.

Fantastic pub! Staff are always very friendly and the food is amazing. They change their menu regularly so there's always something new to try; don't forget to look at the daily specials board as well. The food is always super tasty and very well presented. Our regular local spot for great food, would certainly recommend you try it. You can also reserve your table on their website and advise of any allergies in advance so the chef is aware.

We were a large party for lunch 24 July. Our numbers included several vegans, a couple who are dairy intolerant and one who is gluten intolerant. They said they’d send us menus catered to our needs in advance but didn’t. I rang a few days before to ask for them again and they said they’d send them but again they didn’t. On the day the vegan options were incredibly limited which was disappointing. One of the dairy intolerant people was served a chicken burger in a Brioche bun! Our gluten intolerant person was poisoned by being served gluten. In addition it is all massively overpriced. It is a shame as it’s a lovely place and I’ve been going there over 40 years but sadly they seem unable to cater for allergies etc.

It was a beautiful summers evening and we were celebrating an anniversary and what a perfect spot it was. It had a beautiful outside seating area surrounded by gorgeous mansions which created a very surreal vibe as you dine, almost as though you're on a movie set. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful and the food was really good. The menu changes daily which is very interesting so it's hard to recommend as it may not be there but I will say the padron peppers were probably the best I've ever had and the cheese selection was also amazing.

Lovely country pub near the River . Very nice! Beautiful little Church opposite sets the scene. Downside is the menu isn't very inclusive and doesn't really cater for Vegan's or Vegetarian's. I was quite surprised at this as the demand is high ! Very limited choice of food .

We recently visited The George for their special tapas night and to say it missed the mark would be an understatement. George the 4th came in 5th!! I have lived in Great Amwell my whole life and sadly the George is anything but great. But anyways on to the tapas night. So the three stars I’ve given are solely for the young lady waitress who was brilliant throughout the night. The food however was not as deserving. We ordered 14 dishes and only the lamb and the bravas were of adequate portions. The chicken thigh pictured was 12£!!! Yes 12£ for a SINGLE chicken thigh!! Sadly I didn’t take a picture but we also ordered a croquette which was larger than a usual one but still singular croquette for 7£. Sadly the London prices didn’t match the quality required and the George has once again let us down.

Came here for lunch with mum. Very modern and clean, yet cosy and out of the way. Sat by the log fire and had fish and chips and mushy peas. Plentiful and excellent. Staff were kind and helpful. Only problem is it is difficult to park.

Great front of house staff, amazing food though if you're a veggie/vegan it'll basically be a set menu as they go for a small menu done well strategy. Parking is an issue so pop it at the end or middle of a wall/cycle

Went here for lunch on a sunny day so we sat out in the front garden which is really relaxing with calming background music. The service was impeccable and the food was amazing! It was so good we are going to return to try their dinner menu and Sunday lunch! Definitely recommend!

We went for a Sunday roast with kids and my aunt. The kids ate for £1 which was an absolute bargain. As usual the service was wonderful, the wine was amazing and the food was spectacular! We shared the 500gm sirloin between three adults and it was massive and came with loads of sides!

Apart the food arriving very late after asking several times how long it would be, when it did arrive it was lukewarm. The beef was really fatty The young man that served us was excellent The other diners had no idea how to control their kids which were screaming so we all had to shout across the table to be heard

Having been meaning to come here for ages and it lived up to expectations. It isn’t cheap but quality was fantastic and wine - although a limited choice - was reasonably priced. Staff really friendly and helpful. Will definitely be back

Took my husband and another couple here last Wednesday evening. Lovely setting, staff were really attentive and the food was delicious, I'd thoroughly recommend it. The crevettes were just so tasty.

What a 'Hidden Gem'. Tucked away down a narrow lane in Amwell this pub/restaurant was a revelation. I attended this venue for a wedding reception that was held in a room at the back of the main pub.The room was of medium sized with subtle decor and nicely laid out tables. I have osteoarthritis in both knees and they can be quite painful on cold days - and this was one. I only mention this because I find it hard to get a chair to suit when I go out to eat. The staff were wonderful, they went out of their way - above and beyond- to find me a suitable chair for the evening. The service throughout the evening was friendly, quick and courteous. The food was tasty and well presented. They even made accommodation for the children in the group with their own set meal and high chairs where necessary. The toilets were clean and well maintained but I didn't noticed/see a disabled toilet or wheelchair access. The entrance to the building has a rather - for me - high step and another step down into the corridor to the function room where our reception was held. There is outside seating - picnic style tables, which I am sure would be lovely in the warmer/summer days. There's not really a carpark as such, at least not one that I could see, but there is some on street parking. Minicabs don't seem to have a problem finding the venue! I would really recommend this establishment as somewhere to come and celebrate a special occasion, or just to go somewhere different for a pint - the 1936 is great!

Wonderful Mother’s Day lunch. Every item that we ate was delicious. The chef clearly knows how to cook fish! Really friendly and attentive staff, couldn’t have been happier.

The George the IV continues to be the one of the best pubs in herts. The tapas style dining has some fantastic dishes. The burger was a showstopper & on par with luxury dining. Selection of beers is also good including Cruzcampo & 1936 which is a Swiss beer.

We went for lunch with my toddler. The staff were great, all covid safe and social distancing in place. The food was really good and portion size was generous. Would def go again. The bread and garlic butter was to die for

Christmas Day dinner for sixteen people 2021. From the minute I enquired about Christmas Day dinner in the George IV, booking and leaving the restaurant after our meal the service from all members of the team was first class, nothing at all was too much trouble. The food was absolutely amazing, starter, main course and dessert. There was plenty of staff on hand who were friendly, polite and extremely helpful. We were not rushed in any way. I honestly cannot fault one thing and highly recommend a meal here.

Lovely food, cooked with care and flair. If you're a veggie or vegan best to tell them in advance (like I did) as the menu is mainly meat and fish. My 3 companions really enjoyed their meat/ fish options. I would definitely return and recommend.

Just had a wonderful meal at the George IV, honestly the best roast I have ever had! We were a party of 4. Three of us had the roast pork and the other the beef. Everything was perfect - will definitely be returning.

We went for a Sunday lunch. 16 people to celebrate our wedding which was earlier in the year. Had a choice of three dishes in each of the 3 courses. Chloe D'Arcy who managed our booking was exceptional nothing was too much trouble. Highly recommended for either and intimate meeting or a family get together

Such a wonderful place for dinner. The food is so well done. The staff are attentive. However, the menu is relatively limited for those with allergies such as dairy and gluten. However, will definitely go back as it is hard to find decent restaurants in this area!

Great place to go for a drink with friends or for a delicious dinner. Romantic setting, friendly service and great atmosphere all year around, inside or outside too. It was a great destination during the pandemic too
