Updated - In response to the owner’s reply, I did not at any point feedback to your staff that I was happy with the meal, as I did not end up ordering food and went to another establishment. I believe you have me confused with another dissatisfied customer. ————— Definitely should’ve read the reviews before coming in. It appears menu availability is a significant recurring issue here. It’s a very simple process to ensure kitchen staff inform waiting staff when particular food items or dishes are running low, so they’re prepared when customers order. The excuse I’ve read in most of the review responses from the owner, stating the fact they serve fresh food is the reasoning, it’s laughable and quite pathetic - most places serve fresh food and deal with supplier shortages etc, the issue here is the miscommunication between your staff. Something only resolved through adequate training. We shouldn’t have to wait 15 minutes before finding out the food we ordered isn’t actually available. It wouldn’t have been an issue had we been informed either at the time of ordering or a short while after (emphasis on short). Harpenden has a lot to offer, so I’d certainly recommend other nearby restaurants and pubs - sadly not this place until basic communication has been improved between the staff. Especially when you have multiple staff on shift, loitering around the bar for chats…embarrassing and highly unprofessional. Though I do have to say some of the younger uniformed staff were helpful.

I met my Sister at 13.00hrs for lunch, parking was easy just 5 minutes walk from the public (pay and display) car park. When I arrived the staff were nice and friendly, as soon as my Sister arrived we sat down and shortly after that we ordered our food. My Sister had the child size steak which was fine for her, it looked reasonable (a safe dish to cook), obviously a small portion of everything. I ordered the lamb shank and a side order of chips, lucky I ordered the chips as it came with nothing else apart from a small dried puddle of reddish brown glop of some sort, at least I expected a few vegetables of some sort. The meat itself fell off the bone nicely but was hard (dry and burned) on the outside, I did not send it back as I did not wish to offend my Sister who had recommended this place and also we were limited for time. Clearly this was pre-cooked microwaved food badly prepared, not what to expect at the price (even for Harpenden..!). We both had the desert (children's size) which consisted of two scoops of delicious ice cream (the best part of the meal) and a tiny piece of flapjack, really small and not worth bothering about. Of the whole menu less than half was actually available (no exaggeration) and I felt embarrased for the nice friendly hard working staff (who were a definite plus to this disappointing meal). I am sure my Sister will see this review and will agree that we should try elsewhere when there is so much better at a similar price locally. The price (just over £37 for the two of us with just tap water and a coke not including the tip) would have been reasonable for the type of food had it been reheated properly and had there been more choices available, however I was disappointed on this occasion. Two stars is probably on the generous side but because of the friendly service just one star would have been mean, I should add as a footnote that we have eaten here together once before and that time the food was acceptable.

Friends and I had dinner at The George of Harpenden. We met in the bar for pre-dinner drinks. It was quite noisy, and we were glad when we went through into the dining room as it was quieter than in the bar, so we could hear ourselves talking. Our waitress Jessica was friendly and attentive. Many drink and menu options were unavailable as they are apparently changing the options. I chose the Pepperoni Pizza, which was nice. I followed it with Rhubarb and Apple Crumble dessert, which was delicious and a good portion size.

Lovely food, came quite quickly and was decent sized portions. There’s a nice ambiance to the place, and staff are friendly as well. Ended up here as the place we wanted to go to was shut but that seems to have been a blessing in disguise as it was such a lovely experience. Their festive cocktails were also great and at a brilliant deal - 2 for £12

Had a quick lunch with friends at The George today. Food was really nice, well presented and good sized portions. I had the Moroccan-style nourish bowl with the sweet potato & apricot falafel, which was lovely. A special mention for our waitress Annabelle, who was excellent, and always smiling!

I had an amazing brunch here over the bank holiday, our server was perfect and the coffee was one of the best I've had, better even than since coffee chains, along with a cracking full English breakfast it was a great start to the bank holiday Monday!

Love this pub and have visited multiple times, if you are looking for a family friendly pub close to the station, this is the one for you. Great service, polite staff and generally lovely food from breakfast to dinner options. This visit I had the chicken milanese and the only criticism is that the chicken could have had more flavour, garlic, oregano etc. The cookie dough brownie was delicious and nice cocktails. Will definitely be back.

We had a very nice Sunday family breakfast at The George and were extremely well looked after by our friendly waitress Connie. The food was good and also good value in comparison with other venues. Would recommend it.

We were there on a Saturday night in a group, and lots went wrong - I think they were struggling with staffing. HOWEVER throughout the evening, the staff remained polite, engaged and as responsive as they were able to be; the food was really tasty, and we enjoyed being there. Conscious that our group had not had a great experience, the manager decided to.our surprise to reduce our bill - generous, and not something a restaurant would want to choose to do on a busy Saturday evening in the run up to Christmas. I hope they don't often feel the need to do that, as it is basically a great place to have a meal out

Slow start but food was served in a timely manner. The grill pork belly was great but the calzone did not live up to its description and would not order again. Molly served us very pleasantly and professionally - thank you!

This is my favourite place for going out in harpenden. Everyone can find something nice in menu so it’s nice to go there with group of people. They have nice drinks and nice food. Staff it’s always very friendly

Annabelle provided lovely friendly service! The food was OK, but at 6pm on a Saturday night it felt like the 3 of us were the only ones having dinner, so no atmosphere (apart from the sound from the drinking side of the pub).. and despite being so few in for food, it (one starter and 3 mains) was very very slow to arrive. Good for drinks, but we wont be returning for dinner.

Today enjoyed lunch in this attractive restaurant. We shared a tasty Mezze and appreciated the generous variety of fresh ingredients. The sharing plate was presented in a most attractive way. My companion loved the double chocolate dessert, while I appreciated the provision of mini desserts with coffee. Our waiter Tyson was brilliant and an asset to your company as was your chef on the day. Can't wait to return.

Always a good place for brunch and coffee. The staff are always welcoming and attentive. Our server was Annabelle and she really looked after us. Plus we had a 1 year old, so was extra helpful with their patience, high chair and allowing the little one to go 'exploring' with his Dad while restless.

Fathers deal meal was superb, Free pint for the fathers, was very enjoyed and a great idea. All staff were so friendly, especially Connie our waitress who was just brilliant. The food was great but the dessert were even better, recommended the brownie and Eton mess!! Can’t wait to return

Last visit was 5 star but a very average visit today. We all had different pizzas, which were quick to arrive but all very dry and warm instead of hot. Service was ok, but needed to ask for napkins and condiments etc. The online ordering is still a great feature. The visit was marred by a lot of dogs in the pub area, some of which were yapping away loudly and constantly.

We went with friends and their children for lunch. It was awful... Waited over an hour before our starters and the kids meals came. Another hour before our mains! By the time the kids were hungry and grumpy!! I had a fish pie that was of a funny foamy texture. We were planning to stay for dessert but simply didn't have another hour to wair!! Not recommended if you are in a rush or with kids. or simply, want decent food.

Nice food in relaxed atmosphere. Our server was very attentive and polite. We did have to send steaks back as they were overcooked but they came back perfectly cooked second time. I was a chef for 10 Years so i completely understand mistakes can be made but it was rectified and we were very happy with the meal! Will definitely return!

Lots of space and lovely decor. I had the vegan pizza - initially undercooked for my liking but it was no trouble to get it sent back and done for longer. Our waitress Lana was really helpful and made sure we were happy throughout our stay, thank you!

Been visiting for a while now … usually after a long day at work and in need of some relaxation.. I’ve always loved the cocktails here especially the tropical Mai Tai and strawberry daiquiris. Friendly managers and staff Ate from here for the first time this month, can’t complain about the quality or price of the food at all 👌🏻

Very disappointed asked for scrambled egg on toast and mushrooms. The scrambled must have been 1 egg and the mushrooms were rubbery, hard to chew. The green tea bag must be very old as no strength or flavour in it

Our first time here. We will definitely be back. My husband and I were visiting for a celebration. We were greeted by the amazing staff promptly. We asked Patrick for a suggestion from the menu, he was very knowledgeable of the entire menu and of his suggestion I choose the salmon with baby potatoes. I am so glad I did. This was the best salmon I have ever been served. The flavor combination was delicious, it was cooked perfectly. From the starter to the desserts everything was amazing. Patrick was delightful and made out visit even more enjoyable. I cant wait to get back.

Food 8/10. Ambiance 2/10. Service 5/10. We'd booked a table with a dog. On arrival we were informed that this was in the bar because we had the dog. We had to wait for our table - staff were more concerned that we were occupying another reserved table - altogether rather chaotic. We kept our coats on throughout the meal due to a draft from the door. We eventually got our food 1h15m after the time our table was booked for - fortunately the food was good (no apple crumble "not been available for weeks").

We had a buffet for 20 at 20 pound a head for my daughter's 21st birthday, though the food was very good there wasn't much of it, a few days later i found out they charged 70 pounds service charge!! All they did was put it on the table !! What a rip off i will never eat there again and would advise nobody to

The only down side was it was not warm and we were a bit cold Lana was amazing. She sorted everything ans was an amazing event planner. She allowed us to feel so welcome and relaxed. All your staff were so helpful and welcoming. We had a great Christmas party and I will be recommending it to everyone.

A disappointing visit, on arrival I went to the bar to order two coffees and was told by the server that unless I gave him a table number I wouldn't get the coffees, a member of the waiting staff was still walking my friend to our table whilst I was ordering the coffees so we didn't actually have a table number, it got sorted in the end but wasn't the best welcome. To make matters worse when my Sunday Trio roast dinner arrived at our table it was stone cold so I had to send it back to the kitchen. I was given a newly plated replacement which was lovely and hot and very tasty, however my friend had almost finished her meal by the time mine arrived. Overall not the best visit, compared to last Sunday which was 100% better with excellent service and lovely food. We're going to try somewhere else to eat next time we're in Harpenden

Food was excellent. Drink (wine) was quite expensive. Staff were ok but a bit rustic and unpolished, which reflects poorly on management - no or insufficient training. Yours may be a pub restaurant, but it is selling itself as a restaurant destination (with food that is certainly not cheap), so it would be reasonable to expect a bit more polish in the way staff serve (from the left), how they ask if you are enjoying the food, etc. Also rather a long wait between courses.

I haven't yet tried the food, though having reviewed the menu, it has some tempting vegetarian options. However, I was impressed by the cocktails, especially the Cosmopolitan and Mojito. My favourite drinks taste different everywhere I go, but I think The George of Harpenden has perfected these cocktails. Great atmosphere, great service, and contemporary decor make this more than just your ordinary pub. The location is perfect, walking distance to the train station. Next, visit food and drinks.

It was a birthday treat for my wife. The food was of high quality, a good atmoshere and the service provided by Jessie was excellent. It was a nice touch to have a free glass of prosecco and a sharing desert as a birthday treat.

Connie was great. Thank you Connie. I'll be bringing me army of staff to come dine here. Great food great atmosphere... Lovely place at a decent cost. Thoroughly enjoyed it ... As you can probably tell... When staff are happy to be working here then it shows and the experience trickles down to the customers.

10/10 service from Jess. We came in a few times over the Christmas period, each time had the pleasure of getting Jess as our waitress. She was wonderful from the beginning to end. The food was amazing. Expensive but amazing. Cocktails are also very nice. Would definitely recommend!
