This is / was (?) one of those city institutional restaurants that was a favourite back in the day by a number of the financiers from the left side of bank station or the lloyds underwriters / brokers from the right side of bank station. Generally always packed at lunch time and serving generous and heavy british style dishes and with a lot of 'meat' involved. Fairly decent wine list and with a range of prices - on each of the times visiting it has always been as a guest of a client and it has always involved heavy red wines and port. Many years back it was the port that was drunk first ..... usually you'll have a starter and meat main course and then a number of side dishes of vegetables etc etc that you'll share ......... deserts / cheese after and depending on when the sticky toffee pudding or bread pudding were good but extremely heavy portions. Back in the day this was a location you were entertaining at or entertained at and generally made it an 'all afternooner' The recent visit i made as a guest had a gap of a few years between ( i forget the prior visit year ) and though i enjoyed, probably more due to the company of people i was with, i didn't find the food as provoking and interesting as in the 'years gone by' - perhaps i put that down to having moved on in life.... But still a worth while visit and it still attracts its regulars - rustic charm, style, food and serving style : though it is good to see it still retains at least a mild element of its prior charm and hasn't become another overly decorated restaurant I've never found the pricing to be anything except what you'd expect to pay in this area for lunch and vino - vino depending on what your taste is ....

Bit of old London with wholesome traditional English fayre. You can imagine Dickens creating his literary characters whilst eating here. Food and service are excellent and always a joy for me when I visit. Highly recommend

This used to be a firm favourite with fantastic long serving staff. However, today we had a rude and inpatient waiter. Table was for 2pm for 6 gents, pate starter was cheap supermarket stuff served on standard supermarket brown toast. Sausage and mash was ok but these days customers expect a quality product which this sadly lacked. Some of our table chose the cheese board which came with grapes frozen solid like a stone. When asking the waiter why he simply said that's how we serve them here. Such a disappointing experience which clearly demonstrated this is a used to be place that has unfortunately slipped down a very slippery slope to it's own fate.

Traditional English Restaurent. Old world charm. Charles Dickens used to be one of their early patrons. Attentive service. Good food and great service. The century old decor is maintained to give the feel but can be crowded and cornered. A must visit if you want to see a slice of old world London

A step back in time. Good service. Food OK but could be a tad better. I was looking forward to steak and kidney pudding but it was not available. However, the steak and ale pie was a suitable and good replacement.

Atmosphere was off the scale. We could have been sat where Charles Dickens sat. Seating organised in atmospheric booths. Menu very traditional, great. Had the Barnsley chop, loved it. Highly recommended.

The George and Vulture is a restaurant/pub in London. There has been an inn on the site, which is off Lombard Street in the historic City of London district, since 1142. It was said to be a meeting place of the notorious Hell-Fire Club and is now a revered City chop house. The staff are friendly and attentive & go above and beyond to make your visit memorable. The historical history is fascinating & the residents' ghosts are a wonderful factor in this establishment. Definitely will return & I highly recommend a visit.

Well this was one off the wishlist. A hidden gem of a Samuel smiths pub in the city. Very quiet inside on my visit but people outside in the lane. Friendly service and the place has a lot for history fans

Like stepping back in time, very old fashioned pub, not changed in centuries. We had a private dinning room for a much overdue friends get together. Note it is old fashioned and the stairs to the dinning rooms are dark and steep. But this adds to the atmosphere. Famous for Charles Dickens and the Hell Fire Club. Service was impeccable despite the stairs and all our food was very good. Sam Smith's ales including AF Brown Ale. Food was great can't fault it if you want to step back in time.

A classic and charming chop house in the heart of The City. Smart service and traditional grub completed by a solid choice of wine and fine ales. I've no idea how long it's been around but it feels like a real institution. Hard to find but well worth the effort.

A unique and fasinatng step into the past with little cubby rooms and alcoves, this place has thankfully not been poshed up. Comfy and cosy with a lovely jolly atmosphere and delightful friendly staff. There were regulars there enjoying their roast beef dinners. The food is plain English fair as expected in an old fashioned Chop House, proper big boys meaty nosh with a couple of veggie or fish dishes, first class jam and sponge pud and excellent organic pale ale. #Very satisfying comfort food indeed.

This place is a hidden gem. I have been here before. Long time ago, in a galaxy far far away! Joking aside, we had a Friday St George day meal here and it was perfect and everything I knew it would deliver and it did liver! I had the scallops with black pudding and bacon, starters, of the the Cuff menu, superb πŸ‘ŒπŸ» then inhad the tomahawk chop, with devil's livers! Again, superb and so well cooked and presented. The staff were lovely, especially with us all being there! It is a proper part of London, historic but the food is perfect and better than some posh Gordon Ramsey or any associated chefs. It's got history, lovely food and choice, and great staff. Thank you and I hope people get what I'm saying! London eat drink nice this is the place x

We booked lunch here today and were very happy to step back in time as we entered this pub. My fish and triple cooked chips were delicious. Charles Dickens rented rooms here and the lovely landlady showed us around the upstairs rooms. We heard great stories about the Dickens family and saucy stories of the old Hellfire Club. We really loved this pub with its great atmosphere. Will definitely go back.

Great, tucked away, old school pub!! All the others we're rammed and spilling into the streets... then we found this little door πŸ‘€ and this pub... saved our night πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ»πŸ»

Quaint pub, steeped in history. Dimly lit interior adds to olde worlde atmosphere. Deep fried whitebait was super. Heritage tomatoes and burrata recommended. Steak and kidney pudding with hispi cabbage was delicious. Risotto made to order. No complaints at all. Good service too.

Sadly we had a dreadful experience a few days ago. Waited 3 hours for our food, which was cold and very average. Place was packed with only two people serving and no idea what was going on in the kitchen. Yet they expected us to pay the full bill, which we did, but we will never return. It was not a happy place, many just got fed up waiting and walked out. Great shame.

An incredible find. The food was very good and I would recommend their Barnsley Chop. The service staff are great characters and the menu is the best of boys food. The restaurant has amazing character and their wine list is extensive (choice of red or white)!

Interesting yet small English restaurant offering Traditional fayre such as Roast Dinner, Sausage & Mash and Steak & Kidney Pie. Good selection of wine and bottled beer from the Samuel Smith brewery. The restaurant looks like it was built in a pre-Victorian age so it is great for a first time visitor to London. The food and drink prices are at the higher end for pub food and the service could have been a bit more friendly. Otherwise the food is of a high quality and is very tasty.

Oh dear this place is not a patch on my last visit…30 years ago! Lacklustre decor and staff and an appallingly β€˜cooked’ bit of cabbage. I’ll leave it another 30 years to go back again!
