Very good Soho Nicholson's pub on the corner of Bateman Street and Frith Street. Five cask beers - and one cider - on handpump when I last visited. Lots of covered standing room outside. The Dog and Duck has been identified by the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA}) as having a nationally important historic pub interior. It has some great advertising mirrors and lovely tile work. Very busy when we visited but quick service made it manageable.

Very small pub. Drink downstairs, eat upstairs. The food was good. Beer was cold. Very quaint.

Odd but interesting little pub, a step back to in decoration to a Victorian era. Adorned to a wall some details consuming Orwell whom enjoyed a drink here. Pleasant enough staff, reasonably busy but managed to grab a table late on a Friday which wasn't bad going. Few decent bars on tap and a good place for people watching. Will be back.

Great small Victorian pub. Interior is beautiful. May struggle to get a table but, if you do, it’s a beautiful place for a pint

Absolute gem in Soho. We stumble across it whilst looking for a quick drink and a bite to eat before going to the Theatre. It was still relatively early, the guy that was in the process of opening up was an absolute legend! Invited us in despite not quite being open, sorted us with some drinks straight up. We mentioned that we were looking for a bit to eat. He rang the chef downstairs and basically ushered the kitchen to start cooking! The food was to a very reasonable standard. And the general asthetics inside were lovely. Very cosy place to sit and enjoy a drink. With some historic attachments also. Very impressed with the service provided. Highly recommend. Can't wait to visit again.

If you want to experience a genuine nineteenth century pub in the heart of soho this is the real thing! Pressed metal ceilings, original glazed tiles and a chandelier - brilliant atmosphere in cozy drinking haunt of famous writers

I have so many fond memories of the dog from back in the day when it was a proper ad-man pub. Those days are over so the pub has changed with the times. But in a really lovely way. It almost looks the same. It's certainly as friendly. And the beers are just as good. Still one of London's best pubs.

🚇 Tottenham Court Road 🍺 £6.05 Amstel ❤️ Great things come in small packages. . The Dog & Duck is nestled on the corner of Bateman Street and Frith Street in the heart of Soho. The nearest tube is Tottenham Court Road. . This pub was built in 1897 and has had some notable punters over the the years. Painter John Constable and writer George Orwell have both frequented this establishment. . This is a tiny pub that really packs a punch. The decor here is outstanding, this pub oozes all things Victoriana. The Victorian tiles are simply stunning and can be seen all around the walls. The etched mirrors are beautifully detailed and give the bar area a sense of space. The servery is clad in mahogany panels and across the ceiling are brass chandeliers to complete the look and feel of this traditional boozer. Upstairs is a dining room for those in need of sustenance. Gents, if you need to spend a penny be sure to bring your Bear Grylls game, the stairs to the toilet are very steep. . The beer choice here was good, this pub is Cask Marque accredited and has five real ales to choose from. I opted for a pint of Amstel, my pint was enjoyable and price point was good considering the area. There is a hearty pub grub menu on offer, Fish & Chips costs £15.50. . There was a cracking atmosphere in this @nicholsonspubs , I arrived around 4pm on a Tuesday and the pub was packed with a couple of regulars, opportunist passers by plus those imbibing outside. The service was also good and efficient. . This was my first visit to the @dogandduck_soho18 and I absolutely loved it. The decor here is simply marvellous and I found myself gazing around taking it all in. The beer and food were on point and you won’t be taken to the cleaners. If you are going for a wander around Soho, put this place on your must visit list. . ℹ️ Info correct on visiting 07.02.23

Great service, lovely dining area, like that it has its own bar so feels like part of the pub. Food was really tasty we had sharing plates. The beef loaded chips were delicious! We had a drink in the main bar area afterwards too

Very good restaurant which is still quite small with only about fifteen chairs. It is better to book your table in advance but personally luck allowed us to find a table of 5 free on a thursday evening. I highly recommend the "STEAK & NICHOLSON'S PALE ALE PIE". It could also be that the atmosphere is noisy as the bar downstairs is a source of a lot of noise.

OMG! Great place. Food was excellent! Service was A+. Was our first pub to visit in London and everything was so great that we expected the same from other pubs. Which not necessarily occurred. If you are in London, don't miss it!

What a find! Quiet small room upstairs of the pub. We had a lovely view out a bay window. We ordered scotch eggs, chicken mushroom pie, and short rib and brisket pie. All was so tasty! Kind and efficient waiter. Would definitely eat here again.

Having only one day in London, I wanted a pub experience. This place was perfect! The food, beers, and atmosphere were excellent! My friend and I both got the fish and chips (cliche, I know), but it was so delightful. Couldn't have asked for anything better on a rainy London afternoon. Pop on by!

Traditional English pub. Of the beer selection the cask ales are the most interesting. The rest is fairly standard. Interiors of the pub are really nice, Victorian style. It’s a quite small room so not too easy to find a spot to sit.

Lovely little pub and perfect for my needs I.e. Close to a theatre I was going to. Food was very good especially the chips; perfection. Only negative comment is to agree with a previous post and get your Chef to ease off on the mayo! Still OTT for me and made the burger sloppier than it deserved. Other than that; good stuff! 👍

Maybe 1 star is a bit harsh, but I was served an ale which was past its best - it tasted like a sour vinegar - not what that Vocation ale should be tasting of. I had one sip and immediately alerted the staff, they only offered me another ale (rather than asking, "what else would you like instead"). None of the other ales appealed to me, so I was thinking I'd play it safe and have a cider from the keg taps. But that seemed to be a problem, and not a drink I was allowed to have. I couldn't be bothered to argue (it was very loud in the pub), so as a compromise I said, could I have half a pint of cider? They gave me the cider, but still charged (my friend who was buying the round) for the pint of ale. That doesn't seem very fair does it? The staff seemed to be lacking in decent communication skills and never apologised for the beer being off. They also didn't remove the pump clip. If I wasn't with friends who had already gotten their drinks, then I'd have walked out and found another pub. If a beer is off, then offer any other pint as a replacement. Or a refund.

Classic pub in London. You will get what you expect, nothing more, nothing less. Historic location, old pub, beautiful decor, good cold beers, friendly staffs, and clean loos. The price is normal for London price. Indoor area is rather tiny, but they have a restaurant on the second floor.

Very typical Soho Victorian pub, small, great decor, good service. Upstairs is the dining room which I didn't try but heard the barmaid say they were full that evening. Worth a pint if your thirsty in Soho.

Under the current situation, still a great place for a pre Ronnie Scott's drink. Staff very efficient

  • 5/5 Nathan H. 5 years ago on Google
From the outside this looks like a standard pub that doesn't have much character. This is especially evident on a Friday and Saturday night when it is full of outside drinkers, get inside when it's quiet though and it is easily one of Soho's most atmospheric boozers. A regular of George Orwell's (and Madonna!) It's worth a stop.

I arrived in London at midday on the Eurostar from Belgium. 1.5 hours later I saw a sign pointing down a little street to the Dog and Duck. As a Kiwi I’m hopeless where English beer is concerned. Helpful staff immediately gave me a chance to taste several beers. I’m impressed with the staff and surroundings. Good job.

The trouble with pubs in Soho is that most of them serve Sam Smith beer, which is usually disappointing. Aside from the choice of beer (which is usually the main thing a pub has to offer...) it's a nice place, though. Even when it's rammed (e.g. Saturday night), you can still get served relatively easily, and the pavement has plenty of room for you to stand. There's even a big awning to protect you from rain. tl;dr: Beer not good, but everything else good, even during peak times.

  • 4/5 Florian K. 4 years ago on Google
Old school pub in Soho, feels like proper 1894. It can get jam packed on Friday evenings. If you want something nicer than a Peroni, they've got some more interesting beers, both cask and keg.

Cannot recommend this little gem enough!! It's definitely one to visit.
