🚇 Stoke Newington 🍺 £5.30 Moretti ❤️ The Rose & Crown in Stoke Newington is one of those pubs that you immediately fall in love with as soon as you clap eyes on it. I mean, look at it, what a stunning boozer. . I visited here on a Sunday lunchtime back in August last year, it was 1pm and the pub was steadily filling up with a mix of punters popping in for drinks or an early Sunday roast. At the time of visiting it was still table service only, so I took a pew and a courteous member of staff came over took my beer order. As I waited for my beer I was having a good gander around the pub taking in my surroundings and admiring the decor in here. The pub is as simple as it is elegant and awash with oak finishes, decorative panels and beautiful Neo-Georgian windows. The one thing the decor does in here is take you back in time, you could imagine you were in here back in the 1930’s when the pub was built by the legendary Truman architect A E Sewel. . Even though I’ve been salivating about how this pub looks and feels, bottom line it’s a decent boozer. The service was good, the beer wasn’t overly priced and you can get a amply portioned roast dinner for around twelve quid. Some Stoke Newington pubs have reinvented themselves to stay relevant, The Rose & Crown is a true original and awaits your patronage. . 📊 Information correct on visiting 02/08/20

Overall have usually had a good experience here regarding atmosphere and service etc. Last Saturday my partner and I were sitting at an unreserved table (so we thought) early evening. We were thinking about ordering food a little later but a member of staff came over and plonked a reserved sign on the table without a word meaning we would have to be in our way in an hour. It would have been better if the sign had been put on the table earlier so we were clear from the beginning....

This hotel and pub is quintessential London. I have no idea how old the building is but it is in great shape with just the right amount of quirky. The staff was beyond amazing and gave great personal service. We had breakfast each day and it was lovely. You can pick from a selection of fruit, toast, ham, cheese coffee and the best croissant we have ever had. The room was huge with a separate dressing area a separate tub, huge and shower. The room has air conditioning and a comfy sette. Bed was so comfy and king size. We would stay here again really can't say enough positive for this place.

This is a beautiful boozer. 4.75 stars. Would be the full five if they sold scampi fries and scratchings. A traditional pub, deceptively large. A beautiful real wood (and coal) fireplace, the likes of which you very rarely see east or north. Great beer selection and a proper Guinness, with authenticated plaque. Gets busy as the secrets out.

Rathly strangely we ordered starters and mains, they came out together! We queried this and took some time for someone to come and rectify! It was a staff error as order had gone through as one not separate courses. Eventually sorted and I was very happy with my food. My starter avocado fries was amazing@ Roast meat and veg very yummy, just had issue with my yorkie which was overcooked and tasted burnt! Yorkies should be beige not dark brown, although they should be crisp on the outside they should be soft and batter like on the inside! On the whole the service charge was dropped from bill due to errors and the food and overall service was 👍

Normally I would say a great pub, to socialise and take in the atmosphere. However, lunch today was lacking in service and quality of food. Went for a rare treat, lunch out on Friday. You expect to good a level of service and good food for the price you pay. Not so ...certain level of I really can't be bothered to add some veg to a lacklustre looking plate of food...the cook, if that was the person ,said we have vegetables at the weekend! The server behind the counter said no veg today..thankfully another rather sensible person behind the counter said some mushy peas were possible. Phew! I ate them gratefully. To say I was disappointed is an under statement. I suppose if all you want is beer then fine but come on to offer a trendy menu if the service and quality falls below standard , is not fine at all. There I said it...just a bit annoyed to the cost of food! Rose and Crown do better please..we rely on a good local with food if you are promoting it.

A great pub with a buzzy vibe. It has a beautiful wooden interior, lots of drink options and good food. Had the Sunday roast which was delicious, would recommend the vegetarian Wellington. It’s also dog friendly 🐕. Only downside, it is a little bit cramped, a lot tables very close together and not much space.

Sunday Roasts nothing really special. I find it expensive for the portions and flavour is a wee bit dull. They can do better. Drink orders took ages to come and brought the wrong orders... Free WiFi.. but not working 🙈

Had our Christmas party at the Rose & Crown and cannot speak highly enough of the staff and food! Very accommodating for a big group. Ian the manager was super helpful and generally great. Rest of the staff were also amazing. Food was delicious and really good portion sizes. Lovely time at a really lovely pub. We’ll be back next year!

We arrived on Friday afternoon to this grand old pub with an open fire warming the bar. Max welcomed us warmly and showed us to a very pleasant room. Warm and spotlessly clean. This accommodation did not disappoint. We enjoyed a drink in the bar buzzing with the excitement of Friday evening. Home made yoghurt and sourdough toast won me over amongst the delicious breakfast choices. Thankyou to Kate and her kind and helpful team . We will return.

Stayed here in January. Could not have been happier. Rooms are lovely, breakfast was wonderful, location is great with the bus stop right outside. Staff is very welcoming, especially Kate. Pub has great vegetarian options. Can't wait to return.

We were supposed to come to London on New Year's Eve, but when our train was cancelled, the staff arranged for new dates. We had a pleasant stay. Very welcoming staff, a very nice room and a good breakfast. The location is very well served. We were delighted with our stay and will definitely be back.

One of Stokey’s best pubs. Food is decent and well priced, beer always well kept, staff always friendly (so much more so than other pubs in the area), and just the cosiest pub imaginable. Really well run by the man in man (Ian?) I think. Runs a tight ship

Ian and the whole team at the Rose & Crown were friendly and accommodating and made our post-wedding drinks a real evening to remember. The pub is such a lovely space, and it was the perfect place to bring our guests for some food and (more) drinks after getting married at nearby Clissold House.

The food was so good and staff were really friendly and attentive. Don’t have a bad word to say about the place.

I've been coming here since landlord Martin Harley was a young barman, and the floor wasn't covered in fake flagstones. The place keeps it's 1920's charm, but is being ruined by the reservation system. Let's keep it as a pub and not turn it into a restaurant. I don't like being turfed of a table in favour of diners.

I can’t comment about the rooms because I’ve only visit the pub. However, such a pleasurable experience. We had lunch by the fireplace and the both the food and the service was superb! Definitely will come back!

A really good lunch. Excellent Bavette Steak with some great skin-on skinny fries cooked in fresh, clean oil and a lovely fresh mixed leaf salad with a good fresh dressing (£15). Well kept cask ale (£5.20). Highly recommended.

This is our favourite place to stay in London and has become a home from home when we come from overseas. The staff are fantastic, breakfast looking out through the window onto Stoke Newington Church Street as the world passes by is brilliant and the rooms are very comfortable. Kate will make you feel very welcome. We will be back soon we hope. Phil & Monica

Spent a wonderful time in the hotel! Had the Suite and the deluxe room - they were super clean and well propped. The owner and the staff were really lovely 😍 also the location was convenient and lively. The pub downstairs as well as the rooftop and breakfast was topnotch. Would come any day again. 5/5

Very nice pub with unfortunate awful service. I was "served" tonight by the most rude "lady". A brunette woman in her late 40s I'd say. After a 20 mins wait where the staff let people skip the queue for no reason, she finally poured my pint but left without saying a word instead of handing it over to me. I just left as I prefer to spend my money elsewhere. There are many pubs in the area with much better choice of beer and where the customers are treated as human beings. If you MUST go, do avoid peak time, they clearly can't handle it.

My favourite pub of the year! The staff is always super friendly. The pub has one of the finest interior and the atmosphere is rustic. I truly enjoy spending a few hours there from time to time.

Roast dinner was ok, but it came out about 5mins after we ordered and was somehow lukewarm. Perhaps we visited on an uncharacteristically busy day, as the staff seemed rushed too - they were friendly though - we got given our bill as soon as we said we didn’t want dessert, and we hadn’t even finished our drinks. We sat down for food around 3:55pm and we left at 4:30pm

Pub itself is nice with ok food in good area but they could do with staff training. One rude service experience really dampens the whole experience. Waitress got annoyed when asked about the menu and says to just read the menu! Don’t think I’ll be coming back

Been coming here for many years and seen many changes. The Sunday roast dinners are awesome. They did have some younger staff working there this summer who appeared to be more concerned about ending thier shift than dealing with my questions, that was off putting, but I think they have left and all is back to normal. Recommended.

I have been living in Hackney for 30+ years and not a frequent visitor to pubs as find most of them underwhelming or noisy or SkySports noise. I happened to go here yesterday and was so impressed! Firstly it stocks Harvey's beer. The nearest place outside Sussex and it was on my doorstep all the time . Also the staff are accomodating and friendly ...finally the food does look awesome. The other stand out attraction is that it is what a good pub should be : nostalgic in its look with a modern day attitude towards Service. How refreshing!

One of my favourite pubs. Great for a quiet drink or a meal. It also hosts the best pub quiz in London!

Great overnight location for Stoke Newington registry office. Comfortable and clean room for our one night stay. As this pub is located on a busy road you do get some traffic noise at night but not enough to keep us awake. Great breakfast too!

Just had lunch here and I have, been here many times before. What a shock really bad food basic fish and chips for £12.50 and a joke…should have gone to the local spoons pub Fish was soggy and chips from a bag, minted peas that must of missed the mint. The staff were happy to discuss in the bar that the chef was new and finding his way around.. ok, find the fryer turn up the heat to about 210c and wait for it to become hot… I will not be back which is a shame as me and the family used to come here a few times a month and I had to wait about half an hour or so and there were 3 people in the pub. Glad I was not here for a busy Sunday lunch or I should have booked a room

Stayed the night in the junior deluxe - was great size room for two people getting ready for a night out. No road noise and everything very efficient.

Went for Sunday lunch for the first time in a while. Roast is still pretty decent, but our server was stand-offish... Would chalk it off to inexperience, but recent reviews have reported similarly poor service

Lovely pub in the heart of stokey with great ambience, super friendly staff and great food. Had a table next to the fireplace which was especially nice! Will come back again

Good size rooms and reasonably situated for the Tottenham Stadium. No tube stations close by. Easily accessed from Kings Cross station via the 73 and 476 buses. Bus stops just outside of the pub. All bus prices are £1.65 no matter the length of the journey. 476 and 149 service takes you to Northumberland Park which is closest to the stadium. Rooms a decent size but a lot of traffic noise outside. Decent light breakfast, but no cooked options.

Frozen fish and chips!!!! The fish has clearly been warmed up on the grill, an absolute disgrace, never seen fish and chips like it. Such a shame, nice pub for drinks but 2nd time eating here and terrible food.

I really love this pub. It’s beautiful inside. It hasn’t had its character stripped away like other pubs in the area. Really nice staff. Never had a bad meal there. I think they should get more credit for their food. Extremely good pub grub.

Edited in response to GM's comments: Hello, yes, it's possible that we just turned up on a bad night. It's definitely livelier around the front near the main door too. Please do take our notes on the food into consideration - all tasted okay but things like chips cooked with fish oil is going to send some punters around the twist, because, well, customers gonna be customers. Revised review after second visit, 18-12-2021: We went back in here the other day and to be fair, everyone behind the bar was a lot happier and the food genuinely seemed less rushed. Guess it's probably just friday nights or the weekend rush that sends folks over the edge a bit. Original review, 13-12-2021: Having lived on Church Street over three years now we have never set foot in the place, as it looks a bit dark and dreary from the outside. Although definitely not a summer pub from this initial view we decided to try it recently now that the weather's colder in the hopes that the place would be a cosy alternative to the Tavern or the Clarence. Fair to say that the overall takeaway is reaonable. The actual joint itself needs a bit of love. Pretty standard dark wood fare inside as you might find in many old london boozers - furniture's as you would expect it to be with nothing spectacular or out of place. There's no real soul to the pub, though. All of the places we frequent have a bit of character - just something to lift them up and away from the other 3000+ london pubs you could be inhabiting. This place doesn't have that. The crowd - not sure if local or visiting - is decent; young, moneyed groups of people - no red-eyed ageing pissheads lurking at the bar giving every other punter the stink eye whenever you dare to venture up for a drink, or football specials out getting lagered up after a game, ala the weavers arms up the road - which is nice. So no trouble there. The food and drink were very, very standard. One thing that the kitchen here really, REALLY needs to stop doing, is using the same oil to cook multiple food items. Chips are not supposed to taste like fish. Unless you're flogging them as some sort of artisanal 'chips in fish'. maybe. Coming from hospitality, this is an immediate disqualification. Overall, it's a bit of a shame as the pub still has so much potential. With the right owners in place, few quid sunk into tidying or updating the interior a bit and sorting out whatever it is that is going on behind the bar and in the kitchen, this venue could be absolute gold.

Stayed in the suite during the heatwave to protect our newborn and has a lovely time. Room was huge, easy to fit the four of us (two adults and two kids). Breakfast was straightforward but did the trick. Only downside as others have mentioned is the noise. But it is a pub so to be expected!

A nice pub with a local feeling in a hipster area. Love the interior of this pub. Good to see it hasn't changed too much over the years. Staff are friendly, so that's always nice.

Pub is nice. We stayed and ate. Mains were nice, nachos to start were not. The salsa tasted like ketchup. Room was good, only gripe is the shower was very weak.

Visited the Rose & Crown for a Sunday roast. It was average to say the least. Chicken was hot and meaty, but the rest of it was very disappointing, tough potatoes and cold carrots, watery gravy. Wouldn't recommend
