We took the old Montague pass road. Which was really beautiful. Driving through the mountains was really a treat. So much stunning flora and fauna. Herold wines is tucked in between these mountains. We tasted some very good wines and thoroughly enjoyed the cheese platter with piping hot bread that had just been baked. Yummy biltong pate, olives, Parma ham, cheeses, and delicious chilly pate. No fancy frills here, but the setting are serene and peaceful. The Wines are very well priced from R70.00 a bottle. BUT All I can say is that during the busy seasons they are not at all prepared. The service is shocking, very under staffed for the volumes of visitors, and only 2 staff members in the kitchen. We have been a few times, the first visit was really great, the wine tasting was done at our table, where we could relax, chat and enjoy the wine tasting at our leisure over a cheese platter, now you have to stand around a informal uncomfortable table and do the tasting there, no stools to sit on and a little chaotic. I most definitely wont be going back again. Such a shame. #deliciousness

This place is not worth driving on that road which is hardly suitable for cars full of stones, mud and holes. The place is very basic, not extraordinary views, food or wine, even the restaurant is below average for a wine estate, the food is below par and no other activities around, it's very isolated, you better off with driving up to oudtshoorn.

Very relaxing atmosphere. Nico is very friendly, down to earth and very knowledgeable when it comes to wine. Laatlammetjie wine - my absolute favorite. Will definitely be visiting soon

We wanted to choose a special place, away from the everyday shopping centers and restaurants, to celebrate a special birthday! The Herold Wines vineyard and unpretentious tasting room in the heart of the OUTENIQUA mountains, surrounded by high mountain peaks and idyllic fynbos scenery was the perfect choice for a cold winter's day. Winemaker and owner, Nico Fourie, immediately made us feel at home and provided a crackling fire, not to mention the warm feeling that comes when good friends, good food and great wine comes together! Herold Wines is easily accessible via the alternative N9, Waboomskraal route past Rosenhof Farm, if the Montagu Pass is closed for repairs. Discovering hidden places makes the travelling worthwhile!

Had the nicest wine tasting experience at Herold Wines. It is located in a very private place with amazing views. The owner greets you personally and introduces you the wines. Be careful when going there through Montagu pass - take the road from the north because the road from George is not accessible with regular car. If you have 4x4, then no problem. Although one of the nices views we had on this road.

Herold Wines is a very nice place to visit just off Montagu Pass. Its very traditional with old wine-making techniques which speaks of the larger area of Herold. I went there with my partner for a cellar tour, wine tasting as well as picnic. The staff was very friendly. Nico is a very nice guy. He has friendly stuff in the kitchen and the overall experience was amazing. I definitely would recommend Herold Wines

This is an amazing family owned boutique wine farm nestled in a quiet corner of the Outeniqua Mountains. If you like glitzy & shiny commercial wines estates this not for you! The owners are very hospitable and welcoming, we stayed in one of the self catering cottages which was cosy and clean during some cold Cape winter weather and the fireplace was great to keep us toasty. Scrumptious food menu is limited by design since all meals are prepared with care on site. Highly recommend the hamburgers at lunch and roosterkoek with breakfast.

It was just perfect. Yesterday me and my sister continued the garden route from Oudtshoorn to Knysna. We were looking for a vineyard and I was so happy I found Herold Wines on Google Maps! …because it’s not a „stop over vineyard“ • you have to drive the „montagu pass“ (?) to get there. The drive was beautiful and the vineyard itself very cute! We really liked the wine, especially the Pino noir 2018, the Riessling and the Rosé from 2022. besides that we had pizza what was also very good :) nice view and also nice talks with the owner that also took care of us 🌸 Highly recommend this vineyard!

If you ask me, what I can recommend in the Wilderness area,  that , with a calm heart,  I will say it is wine farm Herold.  This is the place, where you should definitely be, if you happen to be in the area.  Wines grown in the highlands have their own inimitable taste.  Come here and test the wines on the farm- unforgettable impression.  We have tested these wines before and now we just buy them.  I am happy for the owner of the farm, that more and more people find his farm and wines excellent.

Just love this winery! So rustic with a very cozy atmosphere. Exclusive, awesome-tasting wines. The wine tasting experience is excellent and great value for money. Delicious pizzas and pancakes. Owner/vintner is extremely welcoming and very knowledgeable about all aspects of oenology. An awesome afternoon and a must-visit if you're in this area

A delightful experience with lovely wine and fresh, extremely tasty cheese platter. Such a pleasure to visit an unpretentious wine farm in a uniquely beautiful and quiet place. The wine is also amazing. Particularly the white wines!!!

We spent a magical weekend here. The owners are really friendly, the cottages are sweet and the wine excellent. Highly recommend booking the picnic and wine tasting for a lovely afternoon. Don't miss out on a dip in the natural pool. Hikers/runners will love the nearby trails in the Montague Pass.

Beautiful wine farm a little off the beaten track. We don’t try the food but the wine is good and the owner will take time to chat about it. Definitely recommend going there!

Don’t let the beaten path scare you off. It’s a gravel road and our tiny rental had no issues…this place is well worth it! The views and delicious wine tasting paired with a meat and cheese platter is what is getting my five stars. The service was outstanding. A great stop on the Garden Route.

Beautiful location nestled between the mountains. A must visit when in the area. Turn off on the scenic Montagu Pass. Inside and outside seating. Just a great atmosphere.

At the end of a rocky road lies a little slice of heaven. When the fire is lit and the wine and food is served one can have a lovely conversation with the landlord. Everything one needs for a lovely afternoon.

The food and friendly staff was great and the wine tasting with Nico was great it felt we are special and not like a commercial farm. And when we paid we received a big surprise.
