An old and powerful temple of Lord Shiva, where the Linga itself emerged out of the ground. The positive vibes and the superb aura of the temple fills you up with postivity and energy. I had goosebumps when I first visited the temple. Regular Pooja's, Hawan's and Udyapan's are done here. One can not offer anything except of the water collected from inside the temple on the main Lingam. There's another Lingam in front of the main one where you can offer milk, water and do Rudraabhishek and Pooja. The Swami ji at the temple carries the holy divinity of the temple and is very well educated and has profound knowledge of all religions and philosophy, came to know he has a Doctorate degree too. It was an experience being in his chamber during a satsang. There's a Maa Parvati Temple opposite the Gupteshwar temple and on the occasion of Maha Shivratri a Gathbandhan is done connecting the Dhwaja's of both the temples. It's a rare sight of both the temples being so close together. Moving forward one can visit Gwari Ghaat (Maa Narmada River) and visit Maa Narmada Temple or the Gurudwara at the opposite bank of the divine river. You can enjoy boating and birdwatching as there are thousands of migrated Siberian Gulls (Larus Fuscus Heuglini) during the winter season.

A very sacred Lingam that is said to have been erected by the prayers of Shri Ram during his exile in this region, after which he crossed Narmada to move further South. The Gupteshwar cave was rediscovered in the late 19th century when a local shepherd accidentally broke into it. The temple has been one of the most revered one among the Hindu population of the city.

One of the most ancient Shiva temples on the banks of the sacrosanct Rewa River is the Gupteshwar Mahadev Mandir in Jabalpur. Jabalpur is a part of the Narmada Parikrama and thousands of devotees come here every year to have darshan of Maa Narmada and participate in the aarti. This temple has been mentioned in the Koti Rudra Samhita of the Shiva Purana, the Ramayana and the Skanda Purana. According to the Hindu scriptures, Lord Rama and Lakshmana reached the banks of the Rewa River while searching for Sita Mata during their exile. Lord Rama and his younger brother stayed at the ashram of Sutikshan Rishi and decided to look for Jaabaali Rishi who was living in solitude on the north bank of the Narmada River engaged in tapas (penance and austerities). Lord Rama headed south from Sutikshan Rishi’s ashram towards Dharkundi where Sharabhang Rishi’s ashram was on the banks of the Rewa River. He climbed the Gupteshwar Hills to have darshan of Jaabaali Rishi. He created a Shiva Linga out of sand and performed abhisheka with the water he collected using his hands from the Rewa for a month. Lord Rama spent his time in tapas (penance and austerities) incognito at the Tripuri Tirth by the banks of the Narmada River.
