This is a beautiful building, the former Royal Exchange. I was nearly the only visitor during my visit and I struggled to find much to engage with, although I liked the works by Beryl Cook. Staff seemed a little bored and none were engaging with visitors. It's all a bit elitist, it'd be nice to make it feel more accessible to those who aren't art experts. I liked the effort though made in showing the history of the building and some early documents relating to the opening of the gallery.

The Gallery of Modern Art in Glasgow is located in the heart of the city and houses a collection of modern and contemporary art. It is considered one of Scotland's most popular art galleries, with a range of artworks from local and global artists. The building was once the townhouse of a wealthy tobacco trader and features a striking statue of the Duke of Wellington with a traffic cone on his head.

Hard to get the full experience whilst Goma is under renovation externally. The building itself is an integral part of its story and infused with the collections. Like all museums in Glasgow it has free entry and is continuously adapting its main exhibition space (gallery 1) so on future visits you might find the art more or less to your taste. “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure” as they say. Adelante!

Interesting small permanent collection in a antique building. Bansky show was in main gallery and a admission with a timed ticket was required. Furthermore the artist required all phones be locked in a pouch to prevent photography. So much for free street art for the people. Exit through the gift shop.

Ok layout and if you are into this modern art it will be good for you. We spent our time to avoid bad weather. Saw some interesting things but a vomiting child in a breastfeeding mothers hand is not something I consider art. Neither child paintings and paper mashes created by adults feels like an effort or art in a level of a museum. I took pictures of things I liked I was able to attach them also you can imagine there was not much. But as I said if you are into this stuff I am sure the presentation is good.

I really liked the current exhibition (sadly, can't remember what it's called). Think it was something about domestic life and it gathers quite an eclectic mix. I liked that it represented AIDS heritage. I also like that it involved work from locals (was it Ferguslie Park?). I also enjoyed seeing the behind the scenes look at the artists' studio recreations. And what's not to love about that huge foot!! 😅

I visited the Gallery of Modern Art today and I can say I really enjoyed it. While I am not an art critic, so I cannot comment on the content, I was happy to visit a number of different exhibitions. The gallery is well maintained and has a café and adjacent library at the basement. The café was closed when I visited, but the library was open. The library is not a bug one, but it has a variety of books. There are also PCs available to the public, as well as the gallery WiFi is freely accessible. Big plus the free entrance to the whole gallery and exhibitions, as in my opinion any kind of museum/exhibition should be made freely available to everyone. As in many museums, there is a donations box in the entrance where visitors can make their donations. The building itself is also quite interesting and there is an architectural model of it in display from 1996. Overall, a quite nice experience.

I had high expectations when I visited this museum, but I was disappointed to say the least. The most interesting thing they have is the iconic statue of the Duke of Wellington outside in front of the museum. The building is nice, but that’s all.

Quite compact but nicely laid out gallery if modern art right in the centre of Glasgow. Most of the exhibitions are free though occasionally the gallery will stage a large exhibition with an entrance fee such as the 2023 Banksy retrospective. For me it's one of Glasgows highlights.

Good modern art museum. The taste floor has a few famous artist like Spencer, cook and Warhol but sparse. The upper floors are very sparse.

A lovely free gallery for a quick visit. There’s beautiful displays, and I particularly enjoyed the community section showcasing artwork created by the local youth. It takes about 30 minutes to go around the whole thing so makes for a great little break :)

A gorgeous building on the exterior and interior, beautiful coloured windows which reflect the colours in the sun and welcoming staff on the entrance. The gallery is a must visit if you are in the area, mainly as it is free to visit and why not. Personally, the art is hit and miss but it is a subjective topic and others may feel differently. There are some great Beryl Cook paintings and some beautiful patch work quilts which were in celebration of IWD which were incredible.

Just add a lovely week in the west end of Glasgow, spent hours in the kelvingrove and Hunterian at Glasgow university, had a trip out to the burrell collection and came to GOMA, what a stupid acronym, I didn't recognise what it meant, thought the building was closed in repair and walked on by! Suggest you put a sign on the front door, next to the beautiful statue, with a sign with an arrow pointing to the door saying" gallery of modern art" On a lighter note, have a look at this Huddersfield up and coming painter,he as had work shown at the Walker gallery in Liverpool.

the art work exhibition is great; one of the gallery (they have 4 galleries) also display artworks related with Glasgow International (2021) event along with other venues. Gallery 4 displaying several works by Alasdair Gray (artist and writer).

Found in the heart of Glasgow in Royal Exchange Square, GoMA is FREE to enter. It contains four galleries, a library and gallery shop selling a range inspired by the Collection. The original building that the GOMA is housed in was built in the city's Royal Exchange Square in 1778 as the townhouse of the wealthy tobacco merchant William Cunninghame

Small but nice. Although it was a bit 'emptish', I enjoyed seeing what's there. I very much enjoyed reading about the history of the building. I also liked the Domestic Bliss exhibition. The exhibitions make you think, despite the apparent 'emptiness' of the space as in not being full of "things", "stuff". I personally enjoyed the space. Also, the staff was very nice and helpful. Plus it's free.

Interesting gallery with a quirky mix of new and old art collection. Even the front entrance design is intriguingly contemporary with touches of old renaissance. Loved the ‘Equal pay is not enough’ movement. Not a big gallery.

There wasn’t much exhibition when we go there. However, it’s a lovely place, especially with building architecture. And city’s icon ‘Duke Wellington’ protects the gallery I assume

Great place to visit while in Glasgow. Once your finished looking at the art they have a great library donwstairs where you can get a quiet cuppa.

It's a pity that the art gallery is closed. You can take pictures at the door and look at the buildings. - - -renew When I entered the art museum during my second visit, there was an elevator for those who needed it, as well as restrooms, gift shops, and libraries. Each floor has its own exhibition hall to visit, which is recommended to everyone.

  • 3/5 Andrew L. 4 years ago on Google
The building is striking with its pillars, and of course the Duke of Wellington with traffic cone on head. The museum contains a history of the building which is interesting but the modern art stuff is a bit random for me. Anyway museum is free and if its raining go and check it out.

The museum shop has some fun items and posters for £4, I bought the Tree of Life by Klimt. However, I did not quite get the modern art objects and videos in the main area because they were not linked according to a theme or idea. It is hard for visitors to interpret its message without any explanation or information. They have become random objects, some by pretentious artists. The library is quite extensive. Staff are friendly.

Definitely something for people that are really into art. The exhibit I saw wasnt really for a casual visit but more for a very engaged viewer. The exhibits are very small but there is also a library and a cafe downstairs. The exhibit, to my knowing, was contemporary art not modern (in the technical sense). So if you are looking for modern artworks (1880s-1970s -ish) this is not the place. Admission is free of charge so if you are nearby you might as well pop in. The gift store is very nice and the entrance hall has a cool mirrored wall!

Doesn't work! The highlight is the buildings history displays in the centre of the building. Not sure why there's some excellent images and pieces in there but just doesn't leave you feeling inspired just somewhere between depressed and blimey some of the artists should really just get themselves a proper job and pack it in!!! But why? Surely this museum could do a better job?

Amazing collection of various artworks Prominently located in the city centre of Glasgow. Easily reachable through bus or taxi. There is super loaded library with computers in the basement of the gallery check that out for books to have good read. The mirror work in the entrance lobby is amazing do check it out after entering the building. Definitely worth to check it out. It’s free for entry and welcomes all. Staff is super friendly and building is managed by Glasgow live. There are audio visual stimulation on various exhibits do try them for enriched experience. Also lots of food options just next to the venue. Do check out the tour of whole building will take maximum 2 hours.

Though I was pleased to see the work of Rabiya Choudhry in the museum, it is such a shame and a typical tokenistic gesture of this and most mainstream museum to commission or buy grassroot diverse arts, only when the hype is on or to align to current media pressure. Though GoMA claims they've been interested in Rabiya's work since 2018 - essentially with regards to BLM, it is not until 2020 (at the peak of the BLM movement) that Rabiya's work was presented here, through a COVID-19 fund. Nonetheless, £1 million was spent to acquire elitist arts from 7 artists. Yes, that's over £142,000 per artist on average and a whole community would have survived on just 1/7th of this. Still living in the age when this building's foundation was first laid. 3 stars rating to acknowledge the work of other great artists here.

Beautiful building that feels like a bit of a TARDIS (bigger on the inside than the outside) with some great history, some interesting exhibits but not much open with the current 'rona restrictions, lots of closed exhibits. You'd be lucky to stretch your visit out for over 30 minutes. Can't moan too much because it's free but I'd give it a miss until the restrictions ease.

More than art. Good layout, cute gift store, and little library and cafe in the basement. I don’t really understand modern art, but I love that it exists for residents for free. There’s also creative stations for you to engage with the the art and create art. They also put a lot of focus on making sure resident visitors know the resources available for them like free feminine hygiene resources for menstruating women, food programs for those in scarcity. They are doing more than most museums of modern art. Love that.

Fascinating building. The Gallery changes their main display so it's worth visiting regularly. Free of charge. Able to pop in for a few moments if your shopping or made a few hours trip of the event. Multi purpose building as there is a library and cafe on the basement floor. Three floors with spiral oval shaped floors with historic information as well as long corridors to the left of the stairs on the top floors with art. Really lovely place. Wheelchair access. Staff are very friendly.

Not what I expected but better. Rather than a box-ticking exercise (one Warhol, one Picasso, etc) this is a small but intelligently curated collection of contemporary art from Scotland and beyond. Presented sensitively using the building's layer-cake design, this approach works particularly well for site-specific art. A must-see when in the City Centre.

(Translated by Google) Beautiful neoclassical building built around 1780. It currently houses the museum of modern art. Outside this museum there is a peculiarity, because there is the equestrian statue of the Duke of Welligton. This statue usually has an orange plastic traffic cone on its head, and has become one of the symbols of the city, the subject of postcards and souvenirs. Although the city council has been in charge of removing the cone several times, it is placed again and again. It is believed that this tradition began with a joke since 2000. (Translated by Google) It's well worth going if you think about historical values. There was no subtitle in the video in the exhibition, but it contained significant content. There are many galleries in preparation for the exhibition, so there aren't many things to see, but if you are a contemporary artist, I recommend you go. I was able to see works that were not found in other ordinary art museums. The internet connection was not good in the underground cafe / library, but it was nice to have a rest area where you could relax. The gallery of modern art is a museum that you have to visit every couple of months because it keeps changing. The last time I was there a couple of years ago I didn't find anything that I liked but this time around I found quite a few exciting things. Like art about the suffragettes and a fantastic video of an Artist that does chain reactions art with fire. It's also a beautiful building with some great architecture on the outside so have a look round the outside and look up you'll be amazed what you see. The staff is amiable and helpful. There is a fantastic gift shop that sells all sorts of artistic things and Gorgeous jewelry. I recommend just going into the gallery to look at the shop. Some disability things to mention they have a lift which gives you accesses to all the floors but because of its age it's a bit temperamental be patient with it. Also, the accessible toilet which is in the basement of the building it's not very big so getting larger wheelchairs in Might be a bit hard but the staff is more than willing to help. In the basement, there is a library and an adorable cafe that sells a vast range of lunch and snack things. The cafe also has a Macmillan corner where you can get help and advice with cancer.
