The food was excellent, we got 3 fish and chips and 1 steak pie. The steak pie was OK but I should have went with the fish and chips as it was so much better. Atmosphere was good and service was good. My reason for no 5 star was the discretionary service charge already added to our bill! This is not normal practice and if it wasn't for my wife paying the bill as part of a birthday weekend I would have asked this be removed. The customer should decide the tip!

I liked the place decoration. The food was good but not the best. Their fried Mars bar is different than any other place but I didn’t like it much tho. The staff are friendly and helpful.

Excellent fish and chips….probably the best I’ve had (especially since I travelled from the US). Fish can be traditionally prepared, breaded of even baked. Other selections available (pies, burgess and chicken) for non fish eaters. Nice selection of beer, cocktails and wines. Atmosphere was fun, friendly and efficient. Expect to pay around 15£ per meal.

The breaded haddock fish and chips were marvelous, the battered haddock was equally as good. The fries were excellent. Ordered haggis for the first time as a spring roll; quite odd taste, but do as the Scots when visiting, aye! One thing though, the soda pop is definitely different than the states and the bread and butter was not so flattering. Will definitely come back to visit!!!

Best fish and chips I ate in Edinburgh, you must try the big mix platter amazing for sharing around 15 pound and the value of price is great, love it and the stuff are super friendly, very close to Edinburgh castle. 10 mnts by walk. Very recommended to try

The only reason I'm leaving four stars instead of five is that I found my fish and chips pretty good, but, given the reputation of Bertie's, for me, it wasn't the greatest fish and chips I've ever had. The service was excellent. The atmosphere is excellent. I had some salt and pepper squid as an appetizer that was excellent. The fish and chips were good, but it wasn't amazing. I was expecting to come away from the meal with my mind blown as far as the fish and chips; my mind was not blown. It was still a very good meal, with excellent service. I'm not even suggesting I'm a fish and chips expert; I'm not. For my tastes, four out of five stars.

stopped in because we had heard of the place and their well known fish and chips. It was a disappointment.. the place itself is a nice setup and a really cool place, nice decor. Other than that we were very underwhelmed by the food and service. Our waitress was pleasant enough but seemed to have way too much on her hands.possibly understaffed or she had just taken on too much that night. We had to seriously search for her and flag her down for literally anything we needed and she seemed very flustered and forgetful. Pretty sure she forgot to put our order in for a bit because all the tables around us were served very quickly and we waited for our food for almost an hour! The fish itself is good quality but EXTREMELY SOAKING GREASY!! Also about 70% batter and 30% fish! Not an over exaggeration! When I told the waitress she just laughed at me. Also my mother in laws steak pie was so tiny for the price and not as good as others we’ve had. There’s tons of other pubs with better fish and chips than this place.

Very impressed with the service in this restaurant; our server was extremely friendly and cheerful. Fish and chips was very good quality, but be warned that the portion size is huge! Perhaps a little too big for us, but each to their own. Deep fried Mars bar for desert had to be done of course! Would certainly return.

This is an absolute tourist trap. There are many places in Edinburgh with better fish and chips. While the server was warm and inviting and they have nice ambiance, this fish was garbage. It was sooooooo oily. Absolutely soaked. Then it had such an odd smoky flavor. I think the oil needed to be changed. Would never try again.

We were dubious at first because the place looked quite touristy but having read some of the reviews and craving a good fish and chips lunch we gave it a shot and we weren't disappointed. The fish was very fresh and absolutely delicious. Portions were generous and the tartar sauce and mushy peas (the latter you need to order separately) were great! One thing they could do is add black pepper to the table spices and sauces. They do have an enormous pepper mill they bring Italian style but that just makes it awkward if you like your food a bit more peppery asking an already super busy waitress to sweat over a pepper mill. Other than that it was some of the best fish and chips we've had, and the restaurant itself was very pleasant.

Overall great experience with minor room for improvement: 1. The food is excellent. Really tasty, piping hot and huge portions. The portions are almost an issue, to be honest: I saw tons of plates being taken back to the kitchen with leftover fries, including mine. The portions are hard to eat by yourself so it seems like food waste when it’s clear they are too big. You can, however, ask to take things away in case you don’t finish them! 2. The drinks were nice, we ordered a lager and a cider: both tasty. 3. The atmosphere itself is great, everything works smooth and very fast despite the huge size of the restaurant. There was a small wait of about 10 minutes for us on a Sunday night, but the service after we were seated was really fast. Note that there is a discretionary 10% charge added to your bill without notice! The waiter at our table told us when the bill was brought, and asked if we’d like to take it away - but that felt like guilt tripping. That’s the reason I’m giving 4 ⭐️ and not 5. Overall - great spot!

This is solid fish and chips restaurant. It isn't my favorite so far. The food is really good, and it's a different atmosphere than the other places I've been. Much more of a family chain restaurant vibe. It's definitely easier to get a table for a larger group. The batter for fish is good but not the best in town. The tartar sauce is easily the best I've had in Edinburgh.

Pros: really nice space, great food and kind staff. Trust them, they will guide you on what haddock to order. I ordered the Battered haddock which is the traditional and it was delicious. Beware: huge dishes! Women bathrooms are cute and huge, each one has their own sink. Cons: none for now.

The calamari is amazing, so fresh and delicious. I didn't have high hopes for the food as it is in a very touristy location but I was pleasantly surprised and had a very enjoyable meal. The fried aubergine was a nice vegan/vegetarian alternative.

Had a great experience on Bertie's last day. This is a famous Fish and Chips resto in Edinburgh and many celebrities have visited the place. The ambience was truly amazing, and the customer service was excellent. Food is tasty but a little expensive and If you are looking for a cheap bite then this is not the right place. We liked the food, and the mushy beans, as well as the freshly made mayonnaise, were also nice.

The service was amazing, the host led us to our table right away ! The waitress was very nice and attentive. The food came very fast even though it was extremely crowded. The food tasted good , but wasn’t amazing. The decor was very touristy and it seemed a very touristy place , but the service was amazing so it’s hard to say . I would find a more secluded and intimate fish and chip joint for searching for fresh fish in the city . But also this place wasn’t bad at all , just wasn’t all that . :) no hard feelings . Amazingly fast service :) Also the Espresso martini was delightful!!!!

Tried the fish and chips and it tasted good. It didn't take long until our order was served. The staff is very friendly and helpful. He told us that the fish and chips is usually fried using the same oil used for pork. He's very kind that he takes note to tell the chef to use vegetable oil instead. Thank you. I really appreciate the hospitality.

I truly enjoyed this restaurant; the vibes and the food were just right for dinner time. The fish portion of the fish & chips was delicious! The fries were a bit under but still yummy nonetheless. Overall just a flat out great place to sit and dine.

When we were entering in this place, I thought to myself "what a tourist trap!"... The place was ridiculously busy and, yet, the service was absolutely amazing! The word "Proper" in the name of the restaurant is there for a reason... You could taste the freshness of the fish, chips were great, the burger was juicy and the drinks were great. Did I mention the service? Yeah, you won't regret it.

An excellent Fish’n Chips restaurant. It’s a beautifully appointed and well decorated place with great decor and very comfortable seating. Sprawled over 2 floors with a huge central spiral staircase… there’s plenty of seating able to accommodate either a quaint couples night out or a large group as well! One of the best Fish’n Chips I’ve ever had and the mushy peas were excellent as well! Portions were quite large especially in relation to the price. Service was fantastic! A definite go to when hungry and/or thirsty… a great “Edinburgh” experience!

The staff was nice and I was there at Christmas Eve, even being packed, they were able to make a good service. I didn’t like the squid at all, was a weird texture when you chew, like seems you chewing forever and it’s hard to finish and swallow. It was my second time eating fish and chips, it was ok but not great, it was kinda of flavorless. The sauces that came with the squid and fish was very good. Overall was not the worst food I had but I wouldn’t come back. I spent 31,74£ for um person with tip

Great service when we came 1 hour earlier (totally mixing up our reservations), server was also very attentive and kept checking in on us. Probably one of the best Fish and Chips I ever had before! Would definitely recommend if you are here in Edinburgh.

If you have only one chance of meal while in Edinburgh, make sure you try fish and chips in Bertie’s. It has the best fish and chips. The fish are fresh and taste really good. Your first choice should be Breaded, with not so thick flour so it good seasoned. If you want to more healthy, you can try Baked. The place is nice and comfortable. The staff is very friendly.

While obviously a tourist chip shop located near the castle 🏰, it does fulfill one's desire for all standard variations of fish and chips. Do try the haggis and chips. Curry sauce can be had as well. Service was average. Pints were good. Ate here during lunch time.

The day was long and we wanted to grab something fast. The place was amazing! Really big space good decoration and staff ready to help! The fish we ordered was haddock and it was great. No wonder why they say that it’s the best in Edinburg.
