Glasgow Royal Infirmary

General hospital

😠 On December 24, 2021 around 1am I went to the emergency room for a stomach problem that almost killed me. The nurses brought me to a room to take a urine sample around 30 mins later and leave me in the room until 5 am without assistance when I called her to ask them for the doctor they told me that... People often mention staff, hospital, care, ward, nurses, people, good, patients, hours, pain,

The nurses brought me to a room to take a urine sample around 30 mins later and leave me in the room until 5 am without assistance when I called her to ask them for the doctor they told me that the wait is long and that I shouldn't press the emergency button, and that I had to wait in a really rude tone. I was in pain and I was tired of waiting and that's how I left the hospital without seeing a doctor or knowing the results of my urine sample. This establishment is the worst cathastrophe in the city of Glasgow and some nurses are not nice to people of color like me. We must review the care of patients who come to the emergency room. One can die there without assistance.

My advice to anyone would be try and NOT get sick or if you can afford it go private! This is the worst any of these hospitals have been since this one was built in victorian times when it pre NHS times when hospitals were run like clockwork & cleanliness was the priority unlike the flilthy hellholes of today will kill you if you are badly ill and end up in one. And that's just the staffs lackadasical atfitude towards patients. Dozey Doctors that just glance at patients & come up with a diagnosis. They are stingey with medication people actualy NEED and overprescribe things they DON'T Need. Do not go near this A&E for mental health as they simply DON'T CARE and i even mean care enough to refer you or contact an emergency psychiatrist especialy if it's late at night. They would rather you go away and commit suicide than wake the poor old 125,000 a year psychiatrist up in his Big Bearsden mansion to actualy earn his salary! I had a nervous breakdown once and have a history lf mental illness , i was seeing things my body distorting and wasting away. It was obvious to anyone on the street without any medical training mental health or otherwise that i was having a psychotic breakdown but basicaly they told me i was wasting their time (even though there were about 10 nurses all gathered around the desk talking & drinking coffee and only one other patient lying in a bed so the A&E was EMPTY) He felt me up & said there's nothing wrong with your body then pulled the chair away as if to say im finished with u. I think it was obvious the issue was in my mind not my body anyway! For God sake! So i just left luckily im still here as i was contemplating jumping into the clyde that night. I can't really remember anything else. I think i ended up seeing the psychiatrist through somewhere else.

Well where do I start after been sent around 3 different hospitals my husband Scott ,was seen in A&E at6 pm 11 nov 22 got taken through to assessment unit at 10 pm and wow!!!!for starters we were put in a child room room 2 the place had one chair no bed in it walls and floors absolutely manky with dirt and dried blood one nurse who had black hair around late 20s kept just rolling her eyes bad attitude , no consideration place is disgusting asked for. Cup of water and it was warm vile going into that place without any ailments you would definitely catch stuff in there I understand place and staff to be busy but at least clean the place then got moved to ward 61 well that was even more of a joke the bed sheets were dirty shower wasn't connected in room so got given a basin of cold water to get washed were denied drinks of water to take medication but was told a stern no from Cameron and the other female nurse saying had to use vending machine asked to get clean sheets before he lay on bed they said they can't as had no laundry u have to just accept what u get what or who is running this place after travelling 50 miles we get this absolutely disgusting I'd advise people to use a different hospitals as staff has bad attitudes and cleanliness is a zero

Professor Andrew McKay Hart plastic surgeon . Was sent to this guy for a medical report for a personal Injury claim the man is a fake . He written in his report things that benefit an insurance company to save them money because of an accident I had. I have reported him to the General Medical Council hopefully he learns by his false reports. If you get called to se professor Hart refuse to see him he is a fraud. The complaints I made to the General Medical Council will be on his record for life. If he does to you what he did to me report him he's in it for the money.

It really is a shame that the NHS is struggling with funding and resources as one can easily see how someone else could have easily had a terrible experience at this establishment. They are very understaffed and with a bit of bad luck, you could end up waiting long hours just to speak to someone. Overall, my experience at this A&E was exceptional. I stayed on ward 46 as an inpatient for 2 nights as I underwent a CT scan and a lumbar puncture to rule out any serious complications from some scary symptoms I was facing. From the moment I got seen for initial blood markers, to then getting sent up as an inpatient and all the way through to me getting prescribed medication on my way out of the ward, the care staff's unwavering constant support and the doctors' remarkable blend of proficiency and compassion made what could have been a daunting experience much more manageable. I am deeply deeply grateful for the outstanding care I received.

Beware of a young doctor Dr McKenzie who is very negligent in her manners & care towards patients especially A&E also surgical ward! I have several medical conditions and this girl didn't even assess me yet the ambulance crew had given me GTN spray for chest pain & shortness of breath etc for my symptoms before taking me to hospital! Very dangerous person with unwell patients..needs reported! Young doctors like this are either very uncaring & negligent which they do not care about patients welfare or are sadistic individuals taking on a job to get close to the vurnerable! Please report!!! Again unfortunately had been taken to royal infirmary Glasgow by ambulance several hour wait which I can understand but being epileptic and having other medical conditions pain related not one person came to check on me or help with medication until I was seen! Unfortunately I was again seen by this young very inexperienced Dr McKenzie and she closed the curtain told me to get myself dressed and go home yet no assessment and under the ambulance crew advice I was taken up to hospital! I am under cardiology are at this moment in time and several other doctors for my ongoing medical conditions which I have had since a child and this young girl is putting life's at risk!!! 👎👎👎👎👎👎😡👎👎👎👎👎👎

Disappointing, inaccurate and unpleasant. The Orthopaedic Dept. appear to have reported that our telephone landline was 'busy', and they could not reach us on Saturday ( yesterday). Info. on our caller display shows the line to have been clear, and that NO calls were made or received all Saturday. Accordingly, they are now 'writing to' us, and there may be no opportunity to ask questions/seek advice. As another reviewer has said, they themselves do not answer the phone. Aye well, get the message - seems it's just another unimportant patient.

I cannot thank the staff at this hospital enough. After almost leaving A+E after a long wait I was reassured by staff to stay which I did, and I’m so glad I did. I was kept in over 3 nights in ward 46 and the staff were extremely reassuring towards me, I’ve never received so much respect and care during a daunting hospital experience. It’s been almost a month and I am recovering extremely well mentally and physically as I wouldn’t have been here without the care of these wonderful staff. Thank you NHS. ❤️

My stay at this hospital for around a week has been partially ok and partially horrific. The lasting memory will be that of the latter. I’d prefer to not attend a hospital and suffer at home than be an inpatient as the way some staff have an attitude is terrible. Asking politely for medication once and being snapped at, patients being made fun of (overheard this at the nurses station), things being documented incorrectly in a discharge letter etc it’s all just not good enough. I appreciate the good they’ve done of course but I’ve left feeling worse. Others in the ward were saying similar and that there are few staff that actually make a difference in a positive way and they make your stay feel much better. It’s unfortunate for the kind and compassionate staff as the rude ones outweigh the good ones. Grateful but disappointed. Wouldn’t recommend unless you are in dire need of medical help. Brace yourself for staff with an attitude who don’t want to be bothered with you. Go in prepared if possible. The lack of communication between the hospital, GP, community pharmacy and/or mental health team is ridiculous. It leaves the patient with a lot of work to do that they shouldn’t have to deal with.

This hospital is the worst hospital I know staff are understaffed but why can't you at least try and show you cate a little bit . I've had three bad experiences in this hospital with my mum who went in with gallstones and ended up with delirium and then she just got worse I had to fight for 6 months to get her proper care eventually I fot her to stobhill jurassic those nurses are angels . I also had a very bad experience for my husband so I will never fo back to this hospital ever again.

I've had the unfortunate luck to be in a few times, all good, only one bad experience. Or should that be very bad? Yea very. Still lovely nurses who do try they're best, all in all they do the best they can in these difficult circumstances.

Barring the time, and considering that this was our first visit to the NHS, truly professional staff: they have one of the most challenging jobs, dealing with challenge after another that the human condition brings up, competently with the best possible manner and under circumstances. It starts with reception all the way through the nurses, doctor's, and ending with the janitor. Keep up the good work, we all need you!

I came here to the A&E after having an accidental overdose and the staff here went above and beyond for me. I stayed one night but I appreciated what they did for me. When leaving the hospital (I had arrived via ambulance) I found the public transportation to get back to the city centre of Glasgow was great there were a lot of ways to get back and I think it's a wonderful hospital. Thank you to all the staff who had looked after me.

I immediately took a facial scalding victim to the A&E. They actually refused to give me cold water or wet towels to administer first aid. The pensioner sat for 4 hours with only wet bathroom tissues. Her skin turned black and fell off a few days later, she is scarred now. I am shocked that they would not help with first aid whilst sitting in the A&E waiting room!

I was treated at the AAU department and the staff were wonderful. They were extremely professional while being very caring. As I had to have tests it was over a significant period, however when I expressed great concern over my sick cat at home, after the initial part of the treatment they allowed me to go home for 6 hours and then return. Doctors and nurses were very kind making sure we were given refreshments. Everything was very well explained and all patients were treated with respect and dignity. Well done to you all. You are doing an amazing job in often very difficult circumstances.

I cannot fault in any way the exemplary service and care I received at Glasgow Royal yesterday. Wonderful staff, efficient and friendly. Even with a 2.5 hr operation I was in and out in 9 hrs. Well done and thank you, all 23 of you here who helped me through my traumatic day. If you are looking for any point of improvement, try and cut the tedious questions down😁

Horrible hospital. The Drs aside. The staff are beyond useless. They always seem like they have a chip on their soldier. I swear they go out there way to avoid helping you. And they have minor power trips about the slightest things. And the porters wheel you about while talking to anyone they see like theyre out for a pint. "Happening mate, wit ye dain the night" aye mate! Nae bother!!" . Being screamed across the corriders as you make your way to the X-ray room. It's like you need to be at least an 8 on the bam scale to get a job here. And, god forbid you have any dietary requirements, they'll act like you've just handed them a grenade missing the pin. During my (unfortunately) numerous stays, I have had to skip many meals while staying here. Had to rely on my family providing gluten free food. I genuinely feel bad for the few good nurses and porters etc that work here. The place is run by absolute rockets. I have also had to spend nights in the Golden Jubilee hospital. It's like a different planet. Everyone is helpful, polite, they don't freak out because you need a vegetarian meal or gluten free bread. If you have any small issues like putting lights out earlier. No problem. I actually feel I'm being cared for by professionals in the Golden Jubilee. I wouldn't trust most Royal staff to look after my dog Again apologies to the decent people, but you're definitely outnumbered. Unfortunately.

Quite simply don’t risk it, I have an aunt in here, I think she’s in here at least. In an elusive ward 65 - I mean there’s no way to tell. There’s no-one to ask, there’s an elevator that takes you to floor 2 and there is apparently a reception, but that door is permanently closed. So go back to elevator to ground floor - no windows, no staff in sight. Find a sign that says all wards - leads down a windowless tunnel - don’t go it’s not the way - ignore the signs, ignore your impulse to ask for help. I had a mini meltdown - worst, filthiest hospital I’ve ever been in. Don’t use toilets - the sign outside and inside toilet will explain the unsavoury things done inside said toilets. In all honesty it’s like a workhouse, an utter disgrace DO NOT ENTER.

Time you’re seen in depends on what time you come in. Early morning like 6-9am, it’s almost empty and you will be seen very quickly. Afternoon/evening like 3-11pm it is jam packed and you’ll be waiting hours. The seat numbers were reduced and moved 6 feet apart during the pandemic, so there are much fewer seating areas available now, you have to sit on random plastic chairs. Most of the nurses here are very nice. If you have a serious issue like chest pain you will get priority. You get a much more warm and kindly personal feeling here than the QEUH where it seems so cold and clinical like you’re just a ticket number. The reception staff are quite cold but they will generally try to help you. Most of the doctors are also very nice. Only one or two bad eggs. One consultant was extremely rude, however the rest of the staff and subsequent doctors and nurses were lovely. Cardiac care staff were lovely. What I also like about this hospital over the QEUH is that there aren’t rows of ambulances waiting outside for hours with patients in them. They triage you and put you in a waiting area inside the hospital, which is important as it makes the patient feel safer and saves a lot of time for paramedics so they can attend other calls. The ambulance patient triage system at the QE is an absolute shambles.

Big thank you to Allan, Scott and Myha at the Nuclear Cardiology dept. Fantastic service and empathy from all 3 technicians. They explained everything and answered my questions in a very kind way, given some of my questions must have sounded daft. I was not able to do the stress bike ride and was given an injection to stimulate the bike ride. It was over in minutes and not scary because Scott pointed out how calmly he was speaking to me and if he and Allan could see the monitors and were happy, then I had nothing to worry about. This was very reassuring. For me the injection that simulates a bike ride did not leave me tired or breathless as I was not using all the muscles l normally used on a bike ride (years ago). So please don't worry if you are going to this clinic they really do put you at ease and you don't feel anything from the small amount of radiation.

Got sent there through nhs 24 due to a head injury that was causing real concern, I was there for 5 hours with only my vitals taken from the nurse. The staff were rude, didn't explain anything, ignored me when I was crying, staff were all standing about talking about eachother or shopping. Tried to ask them about when I would get seen and get attitude and told you could be waiting another couple hours who knows and then walked off pulling faces. I have had to go home at 4am after originally phoning nhs 24 14 hours prior to be sent from person to person spending s total of 8 hours in waiting rooms to finally walk out of this hospital crying, untreated and scared knowing I have to suffer for longer unknowing what is wrong with me and having to seek help from another hospital tomorrow

My husband received first class care from surgeons and all staff in Orthopaedic Dept Ward 27 with particular thanks to Fiona the Occupational Therapist, for her exceptional care and attention, and Roger his Physiotherapist for his work with John prior to his stay in hospital, his attention whilst in hospital, and for his follow up care. Attended the acute section of the A&E dept on 3rd Feb having being sent by my GP. I arrived at about 5pm and was released about 1am having been there 8hrs which is a significant duration. I the have nothing but total respect and appreciation for the care and assistance I was afforded by EVERY member of staff I came in contact with . Aware of the many challenges facing NHS today I applaud them for their commitment and dedication through a very difficult period for them all. I would like to give special thanks to a nurse called Emma he was simply outstanding on every front and was a credit to both the hospital and her profession . Also the young doctor who examined me and took me through everything that was being done . I apologize but in all the hubub going on a cannot remember his name ,simply that he had a distinctive Irish accent. His approach , mannerisms and attention to detail was so reassuring . I got back home in the early hrs of the morning tired but relieved I want and got the treatment I needed. I would appreciate if perhaps the hospital management could seek out the staff I have mentioned and give them my sincere appreciation despite theclimited information I have given you about them . Yours sincerely Mr James Webster

Had to visit there back in the day when my Great-Grandmother was run over after leaving a Glasgow Pub late one night somewhat the worse for ware...We actually had stones thrown at our car after getting lost going to visit her, ending up in The Gorbals and asking some locals for directions to this Hospital..Dont,think the residents were too fond of the Southern English accent!!...If you yourselves get lost and are English, put on any accent, French for instance and hope for the best!!..The Gorbals is much changed now I hear. The Hospital itself was o.k.though.They saved her life and you can,t ask for more than that.So many ,many thanks.

Just no words whole night calling for help they do not turn up.I go to there because the pain in my mouth was unbearable they tell me that they cannot do anything what do you mean you cant do anything. You are gonna tell me that you cannot give me a pain killer or something to numb the pain just for a little. Just little to no care for people that have a problem and are screaming of pain. I just imagine if i was severely wounded with a risk for my life it is just uselss to have an emergency department if you do not use it at all.

I was taken here by ambulance in late May 2021 for a health emergency. Ambulance crew were complete gents. And the nurses who handled my X-Ray were great. Unfortunately my experience here was soured by a young English doctor who was “treating” me. Treating me in quotes because I didn’t receive help for my health problem at the hospital. When you’re in such a moment of distress, you expect the doctor taking care of you to know all the in’s and out’s of a specific health problem, which this doctor didn’t and when I tried to correct him he started going back and forth with me, all while I’m laying there on the bed in distress. And afterwards when my family confronted him about not properly helping me, he made a snide remark under his breath as he was walking back to the secure door into the A&E department. Incredibly unprofessional. Go to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital through the Clyde Tunnel if you need treatment, my experience there was much better.

Most staff are kind and caring, working so hard and doing their upmost, but the odd one or two are absolutely horrid. 'Kat' who worked in the male respiratory ward over Christmas 2022 is one of these uncaring examples. She caused great upset with the way she treated and spoke to people. Her colleague 'kayleigh' however was a shining example of how to treat the elderly, ill and infirm.

It's been a while since my last appointment at this hospital. But it still upsets me to think about it. I was referred after developing chronic urticaria (hives) and eczema linked to an autoimmune condition. On my various appts at the Royal, I never once saw the same dermatologist. On my last appt, I saw a young doctor whose name I can't recall. She refused to listen to me when I told her I couldn't use steroid creams as I had previously (many years before) gone through TSW. She wouldn't look at the photos I had taken of my skin, and told me that I couldn't possibly be experiencing the symptoms I was. She even laughed when I tried to tell her about how I was suffering. I left in tears and had to be consoled by a nurse. After living for years with pain and itchy skin, she made a stressful situation even worse. My mental health subsequently collapsed. Luckily for me, I later moved health boards and am now being treated at Ninewells. My care today couldn't be more different. For the record, TSW DOES exist and is now recognised by the UK government.

My experience was in ward 48, plastics ward. I can't thank them enough for how well the amazing nurses and docs have cared for me. And the food was great.

Had to visit A&E department just recently as my gf experienced massive amount of pain around the kidney area so I was suspicious about inflammation. Not so many people in the waiting area so we thought we may be seen at reasonable time, oh boy how terribly wrong I have been. After 4 hours with my girl literally shivering and pale, lying on wooden bench wrapped in a jacket I have politely asked the reception staff when is she gonna be seen only to be looked at with despise and smirk answer that soon. Junkies and intoxicated guys happily skipping the queue because why not, reception staff on their phones, in and out for a smoke and happily chatting away. The doctor has been amazing, very empathetic, very polite and spot on but unfortunately it is not enough to overcome the aftertaste of NHS when I got home around 2 am. A and frickin E. Boris, sell the NHS to that US clown Donald because this cannot get any worse.

Majority of the Nurses are Unprofessional, rude and from a Junkie Kind. They should have more manners and respect for the patients, don't treat them just as numbers, you will also be next in qeue one day.!

Very rude and disgusting staff, using phones and eating all the time in accident and emergency area but when u ask anything or about your turn, they start beating the drum that they are busy. Asians and Africans should avoid this hospital, they treat you like 2nd class citizens.

Very bad treatment, we went to the hospital to get an oxygen mask for my friend who broke it and needs it to sleep, these people from the hospital did not want to help at all, they only suggested that I talk to the manufacturer and send one by parcel , and we were passing through! bad hospital

My brother is there at the moment, been in quiet a few wards because of his serious condition, but each ward has been brilliant, staff treat him with respect and dignity, can’t fault them at all, working under pressure, short staffed, and with Brexit, believe me, it’s gonna get worse, lots of nurses and consultants are getting deported, so for those disgruntled people on here, point the finger where it truly belongs, and be thankful we stilll have an nhs, Boris will be selling it to Trump, which will mean if you’ve no money, no healthcare, then you truly will have something to complain about! Have a good day!

They need more doctors. In A&E there seemed to be only ONE doctor in attendance, calling people through every 45 minutes.

My partner has received mixed care. He has been with the Burns unit with a small burn on his back. Even though it was a 3rd degree one, it's stopped healing properly now and this has taken near a yr and a half. He now gets to see them rarely and has to attend local nurse every 3 days.

I was in urology department a few days back.I don't know about other departments but in urology Everyone was so nice & helpful. All the nurses & staff were great & very reassuring.I guess that is what people need when they are in a hospital to get a morale boost.Star of the show was the Doctor I met.I don't want to name any names but will say to all the staff keep being your kind & helpful self to all the patients who visit for your help.May God Bless us all.

Ancient and needing upscaling, no demolition would be better. Sick rich environment, good teaching hospital, bad for patients. The nearer you get to the door, the nearer you are to heaven.Nice selection rat traps to left as you go in Q.E., entrance.Should be renamed" Eastern Campus of Heaven", the Chinese will knock- up a new one in a week; co-opt Chinese students, for medical training&get it sponserd by Blue Dragon products.

I was at A & E this morning 3/8/20 at approximately 9 am. I was treated extremely politely and caring by all (many) members of staff, and given every test available throughout the morning. Staff also kept to Covid hygiene rules. It turned out to be something simple and I was referred to my GP. I would also like to thank the ambulance men who escorted me there, and arrived literally 15 minutes after NHS24 called them, and were also extremely caring. Many thanks, Isabel Robertson
