This beautiful country park is filled with nature trails, plenty of space to run for kids or dogs, a mini zoo and a conservatory. Great for days out and to have a picnic on a nice, dry sunny day! The courtyard café was good too. The park itself is free, however charges apply when visiting the conservatory and the zoo. Adults - £1.85 Children - 95p Under 3's - Free

The family and I had a fantastic time at this place. I certainly will revisit multiple times and atleast once a month. This place is a hidden gem Absolutely beautiful inside Extremely cheaply priced at £1 for children over 3 and £2 for adults. I would pay this every single time happily. Someone here has found a winning formula and knows it. The place was teeming with children and families. Parking here is ample and you start from the reception. Inside there is a indoor section with fish, kids activities, otters, a snake, tortoise, lizards and more. It leads to an outdoor section (pictures attached) which is serene and like a private top level botanical garden. I cant reccomend this place enough for families with young children. Top marks!

Came here with my two children and had a lovely day out. The zoo is reasonably priced - think we paid £4 or so for the three of us to enter. Lovely well kept gardens outside and well looked after animals. Staff member was feeding the skunk and took time to talk to us about her. We followed one of the walking paths too, giving us a beautiful scenic walk. After this we went to the play park and the girls had lots of fun. So much to do and a great day out. Only thing that bothered me was the price of 2 ice creams £5 for a Cornetto and a Calypso.

Great park with a lovely selection of animals from around the world. The park is free to use but if you want to see the animals its £1.85 for adults, 95p for children and under 3s are free. Also, the ticket is all day so you can go in as many times as you want that day. Brilliant value for money. Theres Meerkats, guinea pigs, snakes, monkeys, tropical fish, Scottish wildcats, Otters, and many others too. The park itself is large and has lots of trails with interesting features such as waterfalls. There's a children's play park with chutes, swings, climbing apparatus and zip line with many other features for them to enjoy. There's plenty of benches and picnic tables dotted around too. This is definitely a place for families to enjoy and is somewhere my family has been going for over 20 years. Thoroughly recommend.

It's all right, that's all. It's a bit small for what a zoo is, but they do have an ample number of animals. I'm just weirded out with the monkey(?) that was kept with only just fake plastic plants all over inside the glass enclosure. And I'm concerned with the squirrels, they look very overfed and obese. It's a good place to go out for a few hours anyway, with a few exotic animals.

Very popular country park with a little zoo reasonably priced. Sadly some of the cages were empty but still worth a visit. Play park for those with children and good selection of walks to cater for all levels. We went down to the water falls and along the river. Very relaxing and hard to believe your a stones throw from the city. Well worth a visit.

My wee girl loves this place. She's 3 and loves the animals in the zoo. It's only £2 and gives you access all day, defo worth it. The play park is great and she burns off all her energy every time. = a great night's sleep 😂😂 Lost 1 star as the public toilets were closed and she nearly pee'd herself running to the cafe. Not ideal when so many kids in the one place.

A pleasant trip to Calderglen for a Sunday morning. The park is great with lots of options for most ages of kids. The cafe was modern and bright and they served us yummy food. We didn’t actually realise there was an ‘outside zoo’ until we were about the leave so that was a nice treat. Make sure you read the signs to keep distance from the animals lol my son got a sore lip trying to blow a bird a kiss 😝

Good cheap family day out here if you were to stay out of the cafe. Zoo onsite is very cheap, small but good value for money. Entry to the park itself is free snd so is the parking. The zoo has an adult £2 admission and kid £1 fee. The park is fairly well equipped to keep the kids entertained. We also went a walk to the "Falls" which never took long to reach but the decent up and down the hill is fairly steep with very oversized steps which could be dangerous for kids and very challenging for the elderly. We went to the cafe where I was £49 for 2 pizzas, 4 drinks and 3 cakes. All in all, good wee spot for a day out. Watch the road leading into it though as it is riddled with large potholes and take a picnic if you want to keep it a cheap day out.

An absolute Hidden Gem of a Park. It cost absolutely nothing, beautiful walks, and gardens. Fabulous play park for all ages! This park is a must for a day out. Take a picnic beautiful areas. Then there's an indoor/outdoor animal park, it costs less than £6 for an all day ticket to the animal area, for a family off 4!!! Animal enclosure is optional. It's FREE to enter the park areas, Parking is free. There is also a small Funfair which prices range from £2-£5. Kids had a fabulous time. Will definitely be back!!

The zoo is small but nice. There are all types of tropical animals from monkeys and snakes to cute meerkats. There is also a part of the zoo that is outside. This is where you can see exotic birds and even a wild cat. The entry fee to the zoo is quite low. In the summer parking can be quite busy. After the zoo visit, you can enjoy the park that goes all the way down the glen past a privately owned castle with a cafè or have fun with the kids in the climbing playground.

Not a huge site. A simple walk round with brief look at animals and garden should take nor more than around half hour. £1.80 each to get in which you can't really grumble at if it helps with maintenance of the animals. some different displays in the conservatory and outside from my last visit. it's not a huge site but hard standing paths, plenty of benches and enclosures all have clear boards describing what is inside them and fun boards for photo opportunities. there is also a covered area here families and groups can enjoy a break or picnic and there are some mini diggers for the kids to play on. we were lucky that the rain held off while we looked around outside and along with the animals it was nice to enjoy the autumn colour alongside the last of the summer perennials

Absolutely great day out for the kids, plenty space to run around, a great park for them to play and the wee zoo was brilliant and was soooo cheap to get in. 2 adults and a 4 year old child for £5 I think. Brilliant! Highly recommended to anyone!

Tldr: A busy but huge country park with great walks, a wonderful play park, a wee zoo, ornamental gardens and a golf course. Lots of parking but I'd suggest attending early to make sure you get a space as it's the car park for families, golfers, dog walkers and all and sundry. Park itself is big and has some great walks through trees and open grass with hills, stairs, rivers and waterfalls. There is a large play park with slides, swings, climbing frames and similar. Fairly well maintained but worn in places with some parts broken. A small but well maintained Zoo with plenty of good condition animals, birds and reptiles. Plenty for kids to see and DEFINATELY worth the small admission fee. Tickets are all day so you can come and go as you please. Exit from the zoo is through to the car park. Several toilets in the park with waste bins very evident. There is a small cafe (The courtyard cafe) which has a good selection of hot food and drinks. Definately a good visit, family really enjoyed it. Have been many times before and will be again. If you've not been I firmly suggest going and give yourself plenty of time.

Free parking, nice walks, kids playground and nice green to have picnics. Only £1.85 for adults to enter the 'zoo', mainly small animals like tamarind monkeys, prairie dogs and meerkats as well as birds, but nice to see and in nice grounds, worth a visit

Very cheap, you only pay for access to the small zoo but it's only a couple of pounds. Decent variety of animals and birds, and managed to see a few performances from some of the animals, which was brilliant. The food was good, well priced and served with a smile. It's pretty small but packs a lot in .

I didn't expect much from Calderglen Zoo but left very impressed with what they provided, especially given the low cost of entry. Firstly the scale was a lot more than I'd anticipated having seen the area from outside. Also the exterior area was very nicely laid out with a lot of different pathways and enclosures to explore. The plant selection was very pleasing to the eye. A big bonus was that there were plenty of places to sit throughout making it great for people who struggle with walking long distances such as grandparents looking after young children. Many of the seats are also on shady spots which was helpful on the day we visited as it was quite warm. The whole place was very kid friendly which our toddler appreciated, her favourite animals were the harvest mice. Also, whilst our daughter is past the point where she needs a pram, we did see plenty of parents with them and none seemed to be having any trouble traversing the zoo. It's not something you'd plan a whole day around however if you are looking for somewhere pleasant to visit for an hour then it's perfect and I have no doubt we'll be returning.

Never got as many photos this time round but I love Calderglen County Park! by far one of the best, the mini zoo is great and for a small fee, lovely gardens as well as a massive playpark for kids and an amusement fair, cafe, sport centres and so forth. There's many trails you can walk along and see waterfalls. Such a lovely place.

We decided to take a trip through to airthrill from Edinburgh yesterday and we started at calderglen Country Park. Parking wasn't the best, really busy and quite a few spaces were taken up by contractors and machinery who were there relaying some Of the road, making it hard to turn around. We did eventually get a space though. We sat and had a picnic first ( there are a few picnic tables there) And then took a stroll around the ground, down to the horseshoe waterfall. We then went to the park, really good size, good for all ages. The small zoo was 99p per child and I think £1.99 for adults. There is an indoor area with parots, snakes, meerkats, fish and very cute little monkeys. There is also a outdoor area with quite a few species of birds, some very vocal to my kids delight :) and other animals. We would definitely recommend and would like to return soon.

Paid £3 to get in, which would represent amazing value at twice the price! Only a tiny zoo, but still enough to keep the kids interested for an hour, probably longer if the weather doesn't for the animals outside into hiding. Couple with the rest of the park's facilities, this is a great place for a half day out.

The place was filled with animals and lots of tropical plants, and they were divided into areas which they originated from. I liked that there were fact files with lots of facts about the animals and the plants. But, the entrance had only one line and there was a gift shop too, so it was chaos, and you had to buy tickets at the place. But in all, I liked it very much as it was quite sanitary and the animals had lots of places to play with. There were other facilities near the zoo like a carnival and a park.

Went here on a Sunday. It was extremely fun Some fast slides at the park, some nice climbing walls but the Bungee was hard for someone with Autism. But, other than that, it was a nice day out. Make sure to bring some plastic water bottles. There is a water top up thing at the entrance to the park, near the Zoo.

Great Country Park! Well done to the Local Authorities that don’t follow idiotic modern agendas, like Clowncil of Edinburgh does. Fantastic place to come along with the young generation and truly experience at least some percentage of best times from ‘90 as places like this one, thankfully will give you a bit of that flair

We visited with my son aged 7. He loved the park which was busy due to the weather and we had an ice cream from the van. The small zoo was brilliant for the price and would highly recommend this. Very good park and will definitely go back.

Great value for money! Spent more money on drinks and toys than the entrance fee. Enclosures are great and animals seem well looked after. The inside had a great selection of plants and information on them. Was lovely to see all the different plants and flowers outside attracting bees and other wildlife, added to the calm atmosphere. The park at the back of zoo was a source of great entertainment for my niece and completed the day.

Features extensive riverside walk through valley of the Rotten Calder. Paths and important safety fence are generally in good condition, but there are currently (Aug 2020) a few "sinkholes" where the path has collapsed which, although taped off, need care.

Absolutely love this park it has everything for the family. The small zoo is fantastic for the kids and costs very little to get it: Adults - £1.70 Children - 60p Under 3's - Free The park is great too, I have 5 years between my children so there is something for each of them. We also have a dog and he is allowed into the children's play park with makes things so much easier for us. The woodland walks are lovely and the small coffee shop is great too.

Difficult to get to if you don't have a car. The small zoo is good for children. The cafeteria is small but great. Lovely staff. Couldn't see much of the area because the snow came on and we had a long walk to get there so we decided not to walk around.

Parking a nightmare due to works being carried out and general footfall to the park. The toilets are a nightmare only 1 toilet block open with male and female on opposite sides, with one in one out. Always a queue for the ladies which is not ideal when you have children that really need to go as small children do. Kids park is great lots of different things for the kids to play on and lots of open space to sit down with a picnic or just a rest. They also have a cafe serving food and drinks which are reasonabley priced. A little hut outside the kids park selling ice cream, water and fruit shoots. We also visited the small animal park they have really cheap to enter and the kids did enjoy seeing the fish, turtles parrots and otters aswell as more small animals. A few trails to explore also but we never ventured that far. The kids had a good day at the park just needs more toilets for 5 stars from me.

I love Calderglen Park and the wee Zoo alot of good solid walks that cater for most,. Lots of nature trails to keep children interested. A great play area that's well balanced and interesting, a good walking area for dogs also. Why 3 star? I've never been a fan of the cafe here. I know that COVID is a thing at the moment but it shouldnt create lazy service. Twice had to go back and get parts of missing order. The food was meh and the Coffee was burned. I'll take a picnic in future.

We'll tended paths and nice play areas for the kids. Just be careful if you have to park in the overflow car park if it's soft. Easy to get stuck

Great wee walk for dog walkers . A path follows the river Caulder through woods and gullies with small waterfalls and big old trees to pee on. Welcome escape from mask wearing lock down.

Had a lovely few hours walking round the mini zoo (one way) and still being able to see many little animals. We then had a lovely long walk round the park. The childrens play area is looking great with loads to do.

This is a lovely park. There is a small zoo, we never actually went in to it today but it was open. Would recommend.

A lovely little place! I love the laughing thrush (I think it's called that, it the black and white birds). They are so funny! Make sure to whistle at them and they will whistle back! Adorable!

Pleasantly surprised by this little zoo and play park. Seemed well kept, fair number of animals and no extortionate costs. Kids loved the playground plenty for both little and slightly bigger ones to do. Does tend to get busy though and parking can be tough. Go early to avoid disappointment!

Small zoo with various animals. Kids love it on a sunny day. Takes about 30 mins or so to get around it all. A One way system is in place due to covid regulations

  • 4/5 Rita R. 2 years ago on Google
Enjoyed it interesting facts on all the small animals worth a visit

  • 5/5 Lee J. 2 years ago on Google
Well what a hidden gem the zoo is. The admission is less than £2 per person and is one of the best kept zoo's I have been to. Plenty of endangered animals to see. Dont miss the chance to visit as it will be a big regret if you don't.

Great little zoo to go to with kids. Not much has changed with it over the years, could do with a little upgrade to push it back to the present

Great park for kids & dog walking. Several paths are closed due to landslides, so I hope the Council repair where possible. Children's zoo is great too. Toilet facilities, picnic area & cafe makes good coffee & cakes

Great afternoon out for grandkids. The zoo isn't big but it's fun for little ones under 4. They grounds are kept well and the kids play park went down a hit. Can be very busy on a nice day or on a holiday.

Excellent day out, highly recommend ordering the barbacue, just give them a time, go there it's all waiting, just bring your food, sorted, plenty of parking spaces, book online, sorted

For the price of the entry this is great value for money. Our son loved going round looking at all the animals and the way it's set up is great. We would definitely bring him back.

Amazing park with excellent mini zoo. Kids absolutely loved the trip. Bonus was they had a fun fare on the day also. The staff are amazing especially the lady who took payment for the zoo. This is how a place should run

Came here for the first time at the weekend with my 3 kids. They absolutely loved it. The playgrounds are great, so much to do, plenty for the bigger kids as well as the littler kids. My oldest loved the adventure playground, my middle son loved the big slides and my youngest was happy exploring and playing with the woodchips 😄 The zoo was a nice addition. So cheap to get in and I liked that you can come and go all day. My only gripe is that I wish there were more disabled spaces in the car park, it was really difficult finding somewhere suitable to park and most cars that were in the disabled bays didn't have a badge on display. I've got 3 disabled kids so a disabled space is a necessity for us. All in all a great day out, especially when the sun is shining!

This is a nice outing for the kids, reasonable prices too and the play park is really good for all ages of kids.

Had my great granddaughter here she enjoyed the small creatures there. The tropical part you enter first was a welcome relief as it was -2'c outside. It was a very cold day and we never hung about too long and spent a short time in the play area outside.Worth a visit. Unfortunately the cafe was closed this afternoon due to plumbing work.
