The only reason I use this gym is convenience and price, since I'm a student. However, if cardio isn't the only thing you're interested in, you're not going to get much out of this gym. While the first floor has been revamped with brand new cardio machines (which never seem to be full - not even 50% in use), the lower power play/weightlifting level is incredibly cramped and underkept. The gym also has the fewest isolation machines I have ever seen in any gym - less than a handful for upper and lower body. Like many others have pointed out, a huge portion of the weightlifting area has been closed off for over a year, with seemingly no plans to fix the situation which isn't only an inconvenience but also a security threat. Peak hours are therefore extremely busy - it's difficult to walk past corridors; there's little to no benches, squat racks or even empty space to work out due to how crowded it gets. Bathrooms also haven't been re-done in years, it seems. There's always issues with the shower, and hygiene isn't the best. Lately the gym has also been closed for several days at a time due to strikes, so we can't even use the service we have paid for. I feel bad for the staff, since some people are so lovely, but upper management seems to not care about the state of the gym at all. It's funny how membership prices have gone up but no relevant improvements have been made. If anything, more and more memberships are being sold so it seems things will only continue to go downhill from here. If I could afford it, I would choose another gym.

The weight floor has a very large portion, what used to be the entire dumbbell area fenced off since 2022 with literally no work having been done to it except the expanding of the fenced off area - management doesn’t care - so honestly they need to replace the management - there has been no update to members and students and the fact that if this issue was in any other area of the gym they would have fixed it, but because it is the weights area they don’t, it seems they are quite biased against those who use the weight area and don’t care about fixing the issues. The university should be replacing the management of the Stevenson building as it’s beyond incompetence

Frankly, the management of this gym is just not up to the mark. For over half a year, a substantial chunk of the weightlifting area - the most used part of the gym - has been out of commission, with no visible work done to rectify the situation. Whenever I've asked the management, I've received a nebulous response about this being part of a 'long-term project', which is downright baffling. The state of the weights area isn't just inconvenient - it's a safety hazard, with too many people crammed into too small a space. The fact that the management hasn't prioritised such a fundamental issue is a testament to their incompetence. To make matters worse, they've wrapped up this simple fix into a larger, more convoluted project, managed by a team that seems to have no understanding of how the space is actually used. Their handling of the class schedule leaves much to be desired as well. There's a clear shortage of live spin classes, and when they do schedule them, there's a solid 50% chance the instructor won't show up, especially for the morning sessions. In summary, the management is simply not doing their job. Their seeming indifference to these glaring issues is both astounding and frustrating. It's clear that some serious changes need to be made, and soon.

so this gym is mostly pretty nice. lots of squat racks and a good amount of space for lifting and it’s quite clean. however, there is a lack of decent machinery at this facility. there’s a few weightlifting machines here and there, but overall not enough to accommodate certain individuals who are keen on bodybuilding. lord knows they’ve got enough cardio stuff. a hack squat and hip thrust machine would be great and popular in my opinion. also more landmine attachments on the squat racks. also it seems like at least one of their stair masters is always out of service. they recently took away the sled for some reason as well, and idk when they are bringing it back. plus some of the guys there are creepy. hence 3 stars instead of 5. all the staff are lovely though, and very attentive to my needs.

I really liked the facilities - probably the best equipped gym in Glasgow. However, it’s very squat rack and cardio heavy, with just a handful of benches that are always taken or dragged away into squat racks due to overal lack of weightlifting equipment. The staff are great and super helpful too! Unfortunately, it’s been HYPER busy since September which kills the enjoyment of the workouts for me. Most of the time, there’s a fair wait to get a rack or a bench, even at 7 in the morning! I gave it a fair go, across the whole week and at different times.

Decent-ish facilities if you can get on anything. This place is constantly busy and your time spent there is basically doubled and spent waiting around for equipment to become free. A baffling lack of weight training machines and an absurd amount of cross trainers and treadmills. I have been there at times and seen people literally doing floor work in a tiny space between a wall and a bike. I’m no healthy and safety expert by any means but at times it definitely verges on being unsafe. People are often doing their workouts in the middle of areas that would usually be used to navigate in and out of the gym floor (Hope there’s never a fire in here). I’ve nearly taken a dumbbell to the head on more than one occasion 😂 There seems to be no gym staff presence on the floors to maintain any health and safety standards at times like this. The opening times are a joke. Basically throwing away your money for 2 weeks in December as they take absolute liberties with their festive “opening” times. Was shut completely or shut early more than it was actually open. Shutting at back of 5 on Saturdays and Sundays only adds to the overcrowding throughout the week with nobody being able to get in on weekend evenings. This is a seriously uncomfortable gym to be in at times with how busy it gets. Think carefully before joining and locking yourself into a 1 year membership.

Real lack of equipment for the amount of people who use it. It's rare that you can get a bench or use any of the free weights. Not many weights machines, only two pull-downs and a few chest presses and rows. It seems to be constantly busy unless you go first thing in the morning or last thing at night. Also very run down. For the amount you pay, it's not worth the money at all. Whole thing needs torn down and rebuilt, with more space for equipment. If you compare this gym to other university gyms like GCU and Strathclyde, it's pretty embarrassing. You'd think for a Russell Group university, it would be state of the art, but it's the opposite. Would not recommend.

It’s getting worse and worse - completely inadequate hours, the place always trashed, especially the weight floor, always out of paper roll and spray to clean equipment even though it seems there is always a dozen staff standing and chatting. They need to open earlier in the morning, they open at 6:30 and by 6:32 the entire weight floor is filled with people waiting to use equipment. The management is really bad and seems everything gets worse each week not better. For whatever reason a large portion of the weight floor is shut off with no work seemingly to take place and it’s been like this for over a month with no information for members - I just don’t get how there is no common sense to understand they have sold way too many memberships for the space and have atrocious hours, with a place that always looks like a tornado rolled through and yet so many staff that don’t seem to do anything.

THINK TWICE BEFORE YOU JOIN IN. The gym at UoG didn't bring me a good experience during a year, today marks my last visit, and I would never come back again. I really can't recommend a gym with such a lack of flexibilities, especially on weekends when it closes at 5pm. And the powerlifting space is so small and crowded. Almost half of this area has been shut down due to maintenance working for half a year, which makes you can't even find a bench during peak hours. Those equipments are outdated and they are not suitable enough to cater for the needs of 10000+ students There are many other options in Westend that you might find more satisfactory. If you scroll through recent comments you'll find more evidence. Go there if you want to waste your time for waiting equipments instead of sweating.

The gym’s maintenance has been a concern for some time. It took over a year to address a flooring issue in the weight area, which had temporarily closed a significant portion of it. This not only caused inconvenience but also posed safety concerns for members. More timely communication from management would have been appreciated, especially regarding the repair timeline. It’s worth considering scheduling maintenance during university breaks to minimize disruption. Another point of feedback is regarding the pool facility. While it’s understandable to rent it out for university club sports, it seems the pool is frequently rented to outside organizations like Glasgow Academy, limiting its availability for the university’s large student body. A focus on prioritizing member access and perhaps revisiting management strategies might enhance the overall member experience. The management is the most incompetent of anyplace - the management really needs to be let go and replaced

A large portion of the power play floor has been closed for near half a year, with no information posted for members. It’s due to an uneven floor, which has been an issue for years with no action by management to fix and now that it has gotten so severe it has been closed and a very slow moving long process is apparently happening to create a timeline and secure funding to fix it but this shouldn’t have gotten this bad, just utter incompetence from management over years, and now the busiest gym in Glasgow provides inadequate facilities for members

Excellent gym facilities, 16+ lifting platforms/racks which can take more than one user if busy, but there are limited weight machines and free weights/dumbbells area. The equipment is mostly brand new. Longer hours would've been great, the weekend hours are particularly short, but it's usually not too busy outside peak hours. Remember to bring a padlock if using the changing lockers!

Very nice staff and good atmosphere (5 stars for this) but clear maintenance issues, as a substantial part of the weight lifting area is unusable since more than one year now, as mentioned in other reviews. Also, there is not enough equipment for the number of users in the weight lifting area, which greatly increases the risk of an accident due to overcrowding. More anecdotal but still annoying, the direction increased the cost for booking a squash court of 50% in one year without any form of justification (was 2 pounds, now is 3).

Constantly striking, frustratingly they only informed people of plans to strikes after the majority of students would've purchased a membership. Furthermore the free weights section still has a large part of the floor fenced off causing the remaining area to be crammed. This is only made more farcical by the increased price of membership.

It's just in a state getting worse and worse, and it seems all the money is spent not improving the lacking facilities, you have an insufficient weight floor that is crowded from open to close with a significant portion closed off for months on months, no work being done on the closed odd area, just closed off for months with no information, you have completely insufficient hours, a lack of real spin classes everything has become virtual, and their other classes always filled, yet they have tons of new digital displays all displaying the same unneeded messages and new check-in gates which in sure cost many thousands - all while the actual reason people go is getting worse and worse - it doesn't seem the management even realises their mismanagement

I don't understand why such a significant portion of the weightlifting floor has been closed off since the beginning of the year with no work being done on it - an inadequate space has become far worse and it's not serving students staff or the community anymore - step it up

Poor management - equipment was moved around almost daily, and part of the strength area was closed for almost a year for some reason, but now is accessible. Overcrowding - If you are a bodybuilding enthusiast, you may have to wait for more than ten minutes for a strength machine due to the limited number of them. Strict time limits and frequent strikes, if you have better options, don't come here.

Opening hours are much shorter compared to a year ago. The strike this term has seriously affected us paying members. The whole sport centre is in a very ridiculous state of management. If it wasn't for the fact that I live nearby, I wouldn't have chosen it otherwise. Very much not recommended.

lots of racks and cheap for students but lacking machines. Only one joint leg extension curl machine and no chest fly, calf machine, or preacher curl. Also a huge area has been fenced off for no reason making the dumbbell section quite cramped.

😠 I have had the worst treatment by the staff here. I came with my two year old daughter and wanted to use the little shallow pool. They told me I had to wear a bathing suit so I was even going to purchase one, for over £20, since I promised her that she was going to get in while her older sister was...

😠 I started using this gym as it is the only Ladies only gym I could find. Whilst I was working out on Monday 26th September at around 20:45, a man walked in not once but twice to grab some weights, as if there weren’t enough in the bigger hall.
