The host was very angry at us because we have delay on check out, because we have to spend 1h to clean the room because they don't do it, he was aggressive at us, shouting and insulting us. I really don't recommend this one for backpackers, room are really dirty and there is no real common place for meeting people.

Had a great stay at South Yarra Hostel. The staff were great and the room was clean. There are two kitchens on site so it was always easy to cook. The showers were generally hot and recently updated. The Location is perfect. Easy access to get into the city and St Kilda. If you want to stay longer like many other guests there this is the place to be. Really enjoyed our stay will be back next time we visit Melbourne

À great place to stay. Not too far from the beach, the city center and south yarra train station and many great restaurants . The receptionist are very friendly. The costumers are young and mostly from overseas. The road in front of the hostel are little bit busy though.

We stayed here for 3 nights, upon arrival there was a mix up of what room we were in which Aaron who works on reception was quick to resolve and everything was fine. The hostel is great value for money, the communal areas were cleaned daily as we saw the cleaners during our stay. My only criticism would be it could do with a refurb as some parts of thr hostel look dated. This wouldn't stop us from staying here again in further

Hostel is in a nice position close but outside the CBD's chaos. Shops and train station are within a 10 minutes walk and tram and bus stop are just in front. The area is also very green as it is in between two parks, one of them being the Royal Botanical Gardens, a huge and fantatisc park. Hostel is provided with two kitchens and various type of accommodations, from private room to mixed dorm. In the area you'll find a lot of restaurants and businesses, so it's very suitable for finding a job. I liked the hostel because it's quite and has a house vibe, everyone is respectful, just remember to clean your dishes.

Had an awesome stay at South Yarra Hostel, the guests are really friendly and the staff super nice. I stayed in a private room which was quiet. The dorm rooms that i saw were really big. They have 2 kitchens which are always open. Plenty of ovens and cook tops to use. There are two tv's with netflix, one is in a kitchen which was great to watch tv while having breakfast. The location was great less than 10 minutes to get into the city and beautiful parks within a few minutes walking. Highly recommend staying here for short or long term

Overall good hostel. It's a prime location directly between the city and beach. Tram and bus stop directly in front of it. It doesn't have a hostel feeling. It's actually really homey and easy to meet people. And free Netflix is always a plus. Highly recommend it.

I was the worst hostel since my travelling during 2 years. Singapor, France, Tasmania, London The hostel is so far from the CBD 40 minutes , it look like a dirty house, If you like to be surveille all the time for to go eat, go pee, go out, chill in the sofa, all the corner is full of camera. Without talking about the kitchen, it is very unsanitary. He fire a girl at 1 am for smoke.. He Calls the cop.. It's finished with fighting.. Anyway the guy in the reception is very unsociable, look angry and unhappy. The mood there is dead without some young guy I discouraged to go there if you have another hostel..

Overall it was great. Lots of stairs which was a bit hard with my cane. The top bunk ladder was missing and we assumed that the hostel knew but after talking to them they didn't. We weren't able to use the top bunk because it was bending

Great hostel. Wifi was strong. Everything was clean. Staff was very responsive. Price was fantastic. The hostel is about a 20–25 minute tram ride from the Centre of town or a 45 minute walk along the Yarra which was delightful. Trams from outside the door and a station within 5 minutes walking distance. Awesome vibes. Would absolutely stay here again on my next trip to Melbourne.

The location is great, close to everything, chapel street, botanical Gardens, parks and South Yarra centre is just 10 minutes away if you walk. They do the cleaning of the interior areas three times a week, bed sheets, pillows and some general items are also provided. There are two kitchens, the fridges are fully shared and everyone respects other people's space. There is a TV room, a back yard, coin operated laundry ($3 dryer, $4 washing), no carpark space (there is space for three cars but they're always taken. The reception is very friendly, the price is $225 per week for single private room. A one week deposit is required. Due to the location you'll always hear the noise if the cars. It's a good place for short term stay.

Excellent experience at this hostel. Perfect for those who are working a lot as it has a more chilled and homely vibe. The lounge has Netflix and usually draws in other guests which allows for company and nights out if you desire. Two kitchens with ovens, free WiFi, decent showers, large rooms with desks for work and situated in a fantastic location.

Location just near CNR Toorak road is close to shops, restaurants, and a lovely park, and also a major hospital called The Alfred Hospital. There is also public transport of buses and trains, and South Yarra station about eight minutes walk away. But this is also a noisy environment, with traffic, sirens, and helicopters, and some noisy residents in the houses next to the hostel on Toorak road, routinely setting off car alarms and using blower vacs, and arguing, for example. The residents at the hostel are permanents, rather than backpackers, and some have moved here from Back of Chapel hostel in Prahran which was recently sold by Aaron and his brother who own this hostel also. I have made complaints about aggressive, noisy tenants along with other residents here, but Aaron had said he couldn't solve the problem, and requested my help. I did provide some help, but I disagreed with his request to go out of my room in the middle of the night to catch the aggressive noisy tenants who were regularly slamming doors, and other objects, as I am not security staff here, and I thought his request was provocative, and potentially confrontational, and lacking of considerateness towards me and my safety and well-being and I told him that. He has said he cannot solve the problem, so I have given notice to vacate after only one week. Some people have entered my room while I was out using a key, and I have shown Aaron the damage and markings that they apparently made, but Aaron was not concerned. Their are two adequately equipped kitchens and a relaxing tv room here which I like, and the rates of $175.00 per week for a private room is very moderate. The building is in reasonable condition for its age and the hostel is kept clean, except for the walls in my room. The hostel website says there is soundproofing but that's definitely not true. I have felt unwelcome here and forced to leave, and would have preferred they not accept my booking, rather than treat me so badly, but still today after booking somewhere else Aaron has offered me another room or this same one, perhaps he thinks he can fool me some more.

I stayed here for 6 months, here is a pretty clear review. Check the summary on the bottom for people who are in a hurry. The review I wrote before was because of the owner’s discount for 5stars. I am very sorry about writing fake for one $10 discount. Honestly, most of 5 stars reviews are fake. The hostel Wifi will make you feel like you are using the Internet when it first came out of this world. Price: Very expensive considering the facts below. Location: Easy to go everywhere with bus, tram, train. Besides, the very busy street, can hear all noises. Near a very nice park. 7eleven 30sec, IGA 6mins, Woolie’s 12mins on foot. Facility: Pretty old building, needs to be fixed everywhere. Freezing cold in the winter, beds are cracking. Showers very small and hot water doesn’t consistently come out. No gardens, no sunlight. Two tiny kitchens were even smaller than normal home kitchens for 70 people. Chilling areas are only kitchens, with buzzing sound from old fridges. All furniture and stuff are just ‘the cheapest’. When you uncover the pillows and blankets, dirty brownish stains everywhere and stinks. Never seen washing it staying there for 6 months. Staffs: The owner doesn’t care about people, only for money. Doesn’t even check rooms and kitchens. Ignores complains and advice. I saw him mentioning about French in bad ways, pretty clear that he doesn’t treat people friendly, even less if you are from other than England. He was rude to my Welsh and Scottish, French friends. But don’t expect kindness even you are from England. Randomly the buzzing sound will wake you up at least once a month, it can be easily turned off if you have a key to open the firebox, the owner never does that. We had to call him to come to turn it off. The owner will put people in your room even the other rooms are available, just asked them why and he said to save money. I was staying in a 4 bedroom with two of my mates, and they moved out. After that, he charged me a private room price. Plus, let me write one incident I experienced. I lost my cash which was about $700 from my drawers in my room, couldn’t guess anyone so I asked the owner for the CCTV record. He didn’t answer for 2 days, so I sent him an email again, still no answer. After that, he came to the hostel because I burnt the pan by me being unwary, so the fire alarm rang. Actually people in the hostel could turn it off but we didn’t know coz the owner wasn’t there and didn’t even tell us about. Anyway, the fire engine came, so the owner came as well. I said sorry when I just saw him and he said the fire engine will charge him $3500 and he will put it on me. I said okay it is my fault. And I asked him about the CCTV, he said he checked and there was nothing. I was just regretting being unwary, and two days after, he sent me an email with CCTV videos without saying sorry. I checked it and it was edited, wasn’t a whole journey of the thief. I and my friends asked him for more videos and he said he won’t send more before the police ask for. And he was blaming me of not locking the room door, even the back door of the hostel was just open. I just gave up finding my money because it was too late. I liked this hostel because of the people I met here, not because of the facilities and the price. The owner is very unfriendly, materialistic and doesn’t care about people. Doesn’t put any love or effort on his business. So all the rooms and kitchen, bathroom, showers are not working properly and cared. I am not just writing without trying, I don’t want to ruin someone’s business, but I don’t want people to have unpleasing experience in this hostel since we are looking for a happy and fun time. If anyone tells me the changes in the hostel, I will happily remove one by one when it gets better. Message me on Instagram: jaemin_jq

Kitchen area was very dirty, dishes was dirty and sticky and dishes was bad condition. Common areas was cold. Our room have a heater so it was good and warm. Laundry machine was good and price was reasonable and the machine wash and dry very well our laundry. Good location, only 10 minutes walk to South Yarra station.

Its a working hostel. A bit falling apart. Is not super dirty but definitely not clean. The facilities are basic, kitchen is barely functional. The reception is almost always closed. Overpriced considering what you get.

This 5-star rating is not just about the accommodation itself, but also the caring nature of the owner/s. During this tough time with the COVID-19 virus challenges Josh has gone above & beyond to care for his residents. Many thanks.

Solid hostel, was my home for a 2 months or so and I made some excellent friends there. It's small enough so you get to know everyone and that facilities are good along with excellent management. The owner is really friendly and he definitely makes te stay worthwhile and if you have any issues you can rely on him to help you out. Hope it survives corona and I'll definitely be back to visit. Thanks guys.

A MUST STAY Location: It's located just off Chapel Street, which is one of Melbourne's best entertainment districts. The hostel is a 5 minute walk to bars, nightclubs and restaurants which is great as you don't need to spend money on transport. Cleanliness: The hostel is made up of an old converted townhouse, which gives it a nice homely feel, although it looks old, it is kept very clean, with cleaners attending to it daily. Staff: The manager Aaron is fantastic and very accommodating to your needs. His persona is an example of Melbourne people in general. Security: The hostel is located in a very safe and clean neighbourhood. Value for Money: A good price for a nice hostel, I'd stay here again.

This place is probably the best hostel I've stayed at and became a home away from home. Aaron and his team do a great job and always go the extra mile for the people that come to stay. Back of Chapel is a lively and fun place to stay and there is hardly ever a dull moment. It's in a perfect location that provides easy access to bars, clubs and amazing food all along Chapel street. It's also very easy to get to the city as well. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay here and will certainly miss all of the people that I pretty much call family now. I will never forget my stay at Back of Chapel and I have never felt more welcome at any other hostel. I had an absolute blast! Thank you so much to Aaron and everyone at Back of Chapel!

Initially booked and planned to stay here for five nights when I first landed in Melbourne to give myself time to find a flat. Ended up staying around 3-4 months because I loved it here so much. The location is perfect for all of the restaurants and bars along Chapel Street. The hostel is a perfect size to get to know everybody there. It felt like one huge family during my stay, and I've made friends for life from all over the world. Aaron and his team do a great job to make you as welcome as possible and I'd love to stay here again next time I hit Melbourne.
