Stayed here for 5 nights and had a great stay. Comfy beds, great temperature in room, adequate locker space and great locker system in kitchen. Great hot showers and nice social areas. Thanks for having us!

A great stay close to the CBD and in the heart of Fitzroy. The hostel facilities were great - on arrival you get given a locker and box for food storage. Hot showers and clean bathrooms, albeit slightly dated. The communal area was also very nice with Netflix and other useful amenities. The air conditioners were all set to be on but some long stayers kept turning them off so the rooms did get quite hot but a good nights sleep. There’s a fantastic range of nationalities who are ‘long stayers’ and it’s a great social hostel. We do love the “family run” vibe of the hostel and Joan in particular was very welcoming. We did have a few issues including having to move room to accommodate for long stayers but that wasn’t too much hassle. We did think there was slightly too much management for a hostel - from a short stayers perspective we felt like a bit of a nuisance, being woken up by the owner 1hr before checkout time and hurried along on a few occasions. Additionally we found the entrance and initial check in process arduous with no clear entry and desk to the hostel. (These are not to be rude etc but perhaps may help management if viewed) Overall, by far the cheapest and best place you’ll find in Melbourne and we would stay again.

It,s such a great place to stay,,,and what couldn't b better than this,,,,yes,,,tramside stop by the sidewalk corner! Not every place has a tramstop by your door!😄 As when I went to leave to go into city,,,talking about great timing,,,,cross the street,,and there,s a tram waiting there for you!😄 Overall,,,the hostel is great,,,as it,s possibly the greatest,,basic hostel I've stayed at,,altogether! You get given a set of room and locker keys 🔑,,,for your crockery dishes to use,,,kept in locker,,,of course u bring and label your own food and drink,,,but it,s great how u have your own particular dishes,,,bowl,,plate,,cup,,and cutlery! Would definitely stay here again, rooms are great, toilet and shower facilities are shared,,but always vacant when u need one,,,such a nice,,,quiet,,,decorated,,place,,,with the colourful painted dragon by south door and wall. Certainly love Brunswick Street,,,so historic and retro in a few places! Not far to grab a decent meal and drinks too!

I Write this on behalf of Alan Meffert I booked a room through hostile world which was fine. I rang the backpackers to confirm the booking and advised I was from South Australia. I was told I only needed to show my driver’s licence when I arrive. When I arrived on 11/11/2022 at about 9:30am I was meet by an elderly man who asked where I was from and my age. When I told him my age, I was refused entry and was told I couldn’t stay as they have an age restriction in place. The elderly man was rude and abrupt towards me. I felt I had been discriminated against and unwelcomed after I traveled all that way. After returning home I checked their website to see if there was an age restriction listed. There is no such listing or information on the website or even in their terms and conditions which is false advertising. This has caused a lot of stress as well as financial and time loss.

Location was decent but you can’t sleep due to noise of people drinking and shouting until 4am on weekends and maybe 2am on Monday/Tuesday. They don’t enforce any rules around noise (they say they do, but they don’t). Rooms are average.

I was unsure if I should make this post. I didn’t want to upset the family that are good people and have provided me a good hostel in the past. However, potential future visitors of Melbourne should be informed of what this hostel was and what to expect now. They deserve a good experience in such a fantastic city. In the past this was a good youth hostel. I visited it biannually whenever I needed a bed in Melbourne. It had friendly young travellers, it was safe, clean and in a good location. The owner was quirky and liked to chat. He could get grumpy, but it wasn’t anything you wouldn’t expect from a family run business. You will see good reviews and nice pictures online from this time. The hostel has changed since then. The owners attitude is deteriorating and this is impacting the guests experience. He will be rude ,abrupt and treat the guests like they are a nuisance. Any interaction with him may result in a lecture. The demographic has changed as well. During covid the government paid the hostel to take in disadvantaged people. The hostel guests are now homeless men. I didn’t feel my belongings were safe in public areas. Young travellers and women may feel safer elsewhere. If you would like a nice experience go to another hostel.

Our stay at the hostel over the F1 was comfortable and pleasant. The hostel is small yet functional and very affordable. Evan, who manages the hostel with his delightful wife, is kind and gregarious. He helped us out enormously with the check-in procedure. I would certainly stay here again.

I found this to be one of the lower-end hostels that I have ever stayed in. Whilst it is cheap, you really are getting what you pay for. it is filled mostly with long-term residents who are not rude, but certainly not quite up for a chat. The owner is brash, rude and has no problem bursting into your room without knocking to hassle you and others over small things. His son, the night manager, is absolutely LOVELY though. Almost every surface of the place is covered in aggressively worded 'rules' which are simply off-putting. It wasn't BAD, but I wouldn't go again.

Best hostel in Melbourne. A fantastic family run business. There is only love in this hostel, and I instantly felt at home as soon as I arrived. Great prices, great service, and a laundrette attached. Tramstop 14 has everything you need. Evan is a legend!

Perfect location to soak up all Brunswick street has to offer. A bunch of great places to eat and heaps of cool venues to catch some live music right at your door step. Clean comfy place to stay. Friendly staff, Nick really looked after us well. What a guy 😍

Please do not stay at this hostel! I have stayed at many hostel and this is by far the worst! The owner was really unkind and didn’t make me feel welcomed. The night manager didn’t seem to know what he was doing, the check in took way too long. He also apparently undercharged me so i was aproached by the owner the next day. This would have been fine however he was rude about it desipe it being his son’s fault not mine! The owner yelled at me and everytime i asked somthing he was saying i wasn’t listening. i felt like a hassle and have never been treated so bad as a guest. As a guest at his hostel you would think he would try and be as accomodating as possible. Just not the case. I felt unsafe at times, the place was dirty and smelt.

An awful experience! Never ever before such an untidy, messy hostel. I had booked three nights. They put in a private room for the first two. Then I had to move so I left the place. They did not refund my money. They take 50 $ depisit for the key.

They provide towels. Not sure I've come across a backpackers with that service before. And the owner (and/or manager) is an interesting, friendly character. Otherwise a very no frills hostel, aside from an eclectic bookshelf. But if you're hanging around near your bed next to Brunswick St too long then you're not doing Melbourne right, frankly. Nearby Uptown Jazz Cafe recommended, if you're into that sort of thing, despite varying quality of entertainment.

My partner and I stayed at this hostel. It was a great location, very clean and awesome atmosphere. The hostel was super accommodating to us as we had a later flight after our checkout. The hostel is also in a convenient location to the tram and all the beauty Melbourne has to offer. As well when we checked in Evan showed us around the hostel and all the amenities. He made sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed. I would highly recommend this hostel to anyone looking for a authentic Melbourne experience. If we ever return to Melbourne we would definitely return to Tramstop 14.

Chilled out little hostel. Lots of long term guests, some of them keep to themselves and that's fine. Good place to have as a base while I explored the city!

I stayed here for around 6 months in 2015 and it is the best hostel I have ever stayed in. It is in the best location with close proximity to the CBD, and Fitzroy is a super cool area. I got on with the owner and his wife who are both friendly people. I made some great friends here and the hostel has a very friendly atmosphere, and we went out together every weekend, and occasionally in the week. I have very happy memories from this place, and I am still friends with people that I met there today. I would recommend everyone to stay there if you are on a working holiday in Melbourne, or you are just passing through and you are on a budget. Fantastic hostel!

The hostel has a very warm family-run atmosphere. There was a small hiccup at check-in, but it was not a problem as other guests helped us and the hostel staff took care of it right away. The common areas are spacious and relaxing. People from all over the world with various backgrounds are staying here, and it was impressive to see guests not only from Australia but also from Germany and Italy chatting and laughing in the common space. The staff at the inn were all friendly and helpful, and accompanied me to a local store to purchase a Myki card. You may have to wait a bit for a hair dryer, but you can use the deluxe one with many attachments. The water facilities are old but clean. If there was a small shelf by the wash basin for glasses or contact lenses it would be perfect. Overall, the price was low but the satisfaction was high. thanks Evan, Joan, and Nik! Looking forward to next stay!

I had a positive 3 night stay here and would recommend the hostel to others seeking cheap accommodation with one of the best locations in Melbourne- in the heart of Fitzroy and in close range of all inner Melbourne suburbs. The beds were clean and adequately comfortable. The communal area was reasonably well equipped and comfortable, although quiet during my stay over the Easter weekend. Be prepared for some minor street noise as expected in such a central location. Also of course, as in any dorm room, expect some roommate or other to wander in and switch the lights on in the middle of the night, while everyone is trying to sleep- comes with the territory. Evan who runs the hostel has an old school approach- showing some respect will go a long way when interacting with him. Have some patience, he is perfectly friendly and interesting to chat with. He also runs an effective service with his team, largely made up by family I believe. Over the phone he helped identify my dates having been booked incorrectly, then re-booked, transacted my payment and bypassed Hostelworld to save me the cost of their surcharge. He also assured me of a secure space to store my bicycle in the hostel which was helpful. Having read in previous reviews that the hostel took in misplaced people during covid hardships only further convinces me that this is a hostel worth supporting. Thanks Evan and team.
