Beautiful castle remains located in northern Shropshire, England. Whittington castle was a motte-and-bailey fortification built no later than the twelfth century. We have really enjoyed our stroll around the grounds in this tranquil place. There is a cafe with a good selection of food and drinks , the bookshop and the gift shop there. The castle absolutely great for photography. It is free to visit and also wheelchair accessible. The car park is a decent size.

A lovely little medieval castle situated at the heart of Whittington village. The ruins themselves are lovely to explore and with a little effort there is plenty left to see.The little cafe on site looked nice enough although I didn't sample the food. The little gift shop/bookshop is nice to have a look around with some interesting little artifacts that have been found in and around the area on display. With this being one of the only community run castle in the country it's worth picking up a guide book (which is a nice little read) to help with the funding. Whittington castle is a credit to the community and volunteers that keep the wonderful piece of history so well persevered.

Ahh me, what a lovely lil castle ruin. Not a lot of it and won't take long to see but definitely worth a visit. Managed by the Whittington Castle Preservation Trust and they are very effective and do a grand job, it is beautifully maintained, grounds well cared for, high standard of craftsmanship gone into structures such as the access bridge walkway. Oh, and it's free to visit by the way, think there is a charge for parking, but didn't park here so not so sure. Loo block. On site dog friendly café with good choice on menu and reasonably priced. Very pro active and varied events calendar and they do room hire and hold talks etc. I visited on a Saturday and there was a Solar Scope Astronomy Day in full swing. Useful information boards on site. Can also heartily recommend the very good pub next door - the White Lion.

A pleasant castle with a good gatehouse and the rest in ruins. Easy to find and well signposted. Parking was good and no problems finding a space on a hot, sunny day. There is also an overspill car park just in case. The modern toilets adjacent to the car park are unisex, which confused a few people. The ticket machine was not working, so we paid in the café. The path leading to the gatehouse is suitable for people with mobility problems, with a mix on other parts of the site, meaning most of the site is readily accessible. It was easy to imagine how it was in days gone by and lots of odd corners to explore. Plenty of space for children to play/run on large, flat grassy areas. Although no designated play area, there is a gazebo viewpoint to climb up to. The café/shop is adjacent to the gatehouse and was busy while we were there, selling (well stocked) ice creams, etc. Staff were welcoming and friendly.

If you love a bit of history and old castle ruins, then it's worth a visit. It's great for photography lovers, too. Not a large place or grounds to walk around but never less still lonely. No need to book tickets or even go in the day time as its open 24hrs a day so you can come and go as you please. The little pub near the carpark is obviously open on certain days and hrs. Lovely pond and willow trees, I saw 3 white doves 🕊 as well. Easy access through the front, or you can walk round the side of the moat to the gardens behind. Beautiful place. Nice pub in the area and also a veteran grave yard nearby, which has some interesting stones laid flat and very, very old.

Stunning 😍 This is a community run Castle by volunteers, set in a beautiful, peaceful village 😊 There are events and battle reenactments on throughout the year. There's a small cafe inside the grounds that serves great food and drinks at reasonable prices, and there are public toilets 🚻 The castle grounds are free to enter, car parking costs £2. Well worth a visit!!!

Free to enter castle ruins with a cafe and gift shop. Built as a defence along the English border. Very picturesque and plenty of history boards regarding the past. Ab Fab 😎

A very beautiful and tranquil place which we discovered by pure chance having been diverted on a long road journey! It's great sitting by the moat, under the trees and feeding the ducks, geese, swans, cootes and moorhens 😊 We usually take a picnic with us so not tried the caffi. Lovely gift shop and book shop on site. Definitely worth a visit.

The family fun day is great fun, which happens once a year. But they have regular events throughout the year, too. Worth visiting. If you like it a little more peaceful I suggest visiting on a weekday. Lovely little cafe and gift shop too. Don't forget to feed the ducks.

Great little community run castle. Some good background on the history and a good value cafe. Toilets on site too. Lots of space for the kids to run around or feed the ducks (duck food 50p). Free to enter (which is why I give it 5*), car park £2. Not on the same level as National Trust or Castles you’ll pay to enter, but as it’s free, it’s a great little venue. Allow 1 to 2 hours at most for your visit.

A nice old castle, and very small, half hour would do it justice. Cafe on site, a short walk from the town £2.00 for parking payable in the cafe. Not much to say really? 🤔

The castle is mainly a ruin, but this is a community run castle where lots of events and weddings are held throughout the year. Large pay car park but no admission fee to the castle grounds which are open day and night. Lovely duck pond that was part of the original moat. Quality wooden bridge over it. Nice place to walk your dog with lots of wild grassed areas. Children's play park behind the castle grounds. Large church opposite where events are held. The olde boot pub and restaurant is opposite where good food is served. There is a cafe at the castle for food, plus you can purchase duck food here to feed the ducks. The part of the castle that remains intact is haunted. Ghost groups do investigations regularly here, plus Most Haunted was filmed here several years ago. Overall it's a nice place to spend a couple of hours.

Lovely little castle ruins to see. We were staying near by so decided on a little drive to see this beautiful castle. There is a cafe and shop attached and ample parking. It was a cold frosty day but we still enjoyed the look around. There were facts posted about and overall it was a lovely experience.

Nice castle to visit particularly if you are passing. It's difficult to take a purpose journey to Whittington because there are many larger and, perhaps more spectacular castles to choose from across the Welsh border and surrounding areas but I would certainly stop by if in the area or passing close by. Don't forget to visit the gift shop where there is a small display of artifacts found at the site including some original armour which was found in the moat!

Great place to and even better with the reenactment day, and that was a £5 for car and 4 people, great value for money.

Lovely castle, nice staff, it's a small walk around so visit if you are in the area. Spent around 40-50 minuets here. Has toilets, place for a coffee/food. Lovely views.

Local spot to visit, have a wander, have a cuppa or an ice cream, enjoy the craft fairs, and enjoy history and the wild life.

Great to find a castle which is (a) actually recognisable as a castle rather than a hill with a couple of rocks on, (b) free to enter, and (c) not too "safe" - as in, not fenced off so can romp around playing Knights scrambling up the keep walls.

Nice ruins. Major gatehouse is still in place, so you can imagine how large was all castle

We visited Whittington Castle in order to attend the Plant Hunter's Fair and decided to take a look around whilst we were there. This is a free to enter venue (parking is £2 per car), the historic displays and event boards scattered around the castle and grounds are educational. The moat is charming, being the home of many ducks and the cafe serving the usual cream teas is inexpensive - there is also a second-hand book shop too.

Relatively small and limited as an experience but pleasant for the grandchildren to run around for 45 minutes or so. Nice cafe and ice creams. Free to visit, £2 to park.
