This quaint little zoo is a surprising little place, that is worth a visit, if you go prepared for what it is. What it is, is a small zoo with a strong ecological focus and a good range of animals. What it isn't is Australia Zoo. We went on a weekday, during school term time and pretty much had the place to ourselves. It's not a huge zoo and at first glance has a somewhat "Tiger King" look to it. But that sentence is unfair and does it a disservice. You can easily stroll around in one and a half hours. In doing so you will get to see big cats, Giraffes, zebras, reptiles and plenty of primates. Entry to the zoo is inexpensive, they offer day passes as well as annual. Parking is free. There are several free talks/animal feedings throughout the day from knowledgeable staff. I would advise arriving in the morning to take full advantage of these as the bulk of them take place between 9 and midday. There are also several "close-encounter" experiences, where you can get up close and personal with the animals. These include Lions, Giraffes, Zebras, Meerkats and Marmosets (amongst others) and come at varying extra costs. This will add considerably to your cost for the day out, but is well worth it, because it truly does involve what it says. We chose the marmoset experience and I can say without doubt it was one of the most unforgettable experiences of my life. The little primates bouncing around and finding homes on shoulders, heads and even inside jumpers. The facilities are fairly rudimentary, but clean and perfectly fine. There is a small cafe selling pies, sausage rolls and sandwiches, but it may be worth bringing your own lunch. There is a large picnic area in which to enjoy eating it. Finally the gift shop has a decent range of soft toys and other toys/souvenirs to buy as a reminder of a good day out. Overall, we had a really great time when we visited. If you go, armed with the knowledge this is a smaller size zoo, you will be guaranteed a surprising and rewarding day out... This will be particularly enhanced if you are willing to pay a little extra for the personal experiences.

Arrived at Darling Downs Zoo and had a really great time visiting all the different animals. I had a meerkat and a lion experience. Both experiences I highly recommend. I got to feed the lionesses as the lion was sleeping and not having it. The zoo keepers and handlers were all friendly, down to earth and knowledgeable. The lion keeper also let me feed the tigers as well.

This place is in need of some TLC but it is a great place to visit and has so much potential to be amazing. The admission fees and experience fees are low. This park isn't about making a profit and charging customers a fortune - it is about giving people the opportunity to experience a wide range of animals. I would love to see a multi-million dollar lotto winner invest some funds into this park, it is well deserved and it could enhance customer comfort (pathways) and boost promotion and marketing. However, seeing the diversity of animals here outweighs the rocky path in my opinion. It was great to feed the Emus and Zebras and other animals. There are so many beautiful bird species that I have never seen before. Tell your friends to put this place on their bucket list and get out there and visit. It is a great experience.

I have been to every zoo in Australia and this zoo is a little rough to look at, it is amazing. The animals look healthy and happy, the talks were amazing and we went back for seconds. What an amazing day focus on animals not all the commercial rubbish other zoos have.

I was surprised at how compact it was but a great selection of animals. Cages were a bit smaller than I would have liked but a lot of the animals are part of breeding programs for endangered species so understandable. Lots of different feeding times and experiences. They have no funding so rely on donations and have land to expand to. Definitely worth a visit

I have been several times and I'm impressed to see this zoo expanding. With no government funding, Darling Downs Zoo relies on public attendance and donations to expand and upgrade as required. Their animals are part of breeding programs and appear quite content. It's amazing to get up close with so many different animals - we've fed zebras, llamas, emus and kangaroos, and have been able to learn more and even touch juvenile snakes and alligators. This is a little gem for our region, and they're doing a great job with conservation and education.

The zoo is an underrated gem πŸ’Ž You can walk about and get so up close and personal to the friendlier animals. You can feed certain animals, the zoo does special shows as well, and alot of effort is put in to keeping it pretty and clean. We highly recommend visiting; support from visitors is the backbone of their operation as they aren't government funded. Keep the zoo alive πŸ’›

Small, privately owned Zoo, with a big heart. The staff are excellent and brilliant at their jobs, having a deep caring nature for the animals and the Zoo as a whole. Entry fees are extremely reasonable, considering the number of mouths that need feeding, currently$40 for Adults, $26 for children and $33 for consession holders. With new land having been purchased adjoining the current Zoo, we can expect bigger and better things on the future!

Went there with my family on a Saturday. Not too busy. 2-3 hrs walk. Recommend the group guide tour, you could see the interaction with the guide and animals. If you prefer a peaceful time, please do take a insect repellent with you or prepare to be annoyed by the FLY's!! The animals ,birds and reptiles were all in real good health. For me & my family it's was a good experience and will surely visit again. We like the zoo apart from the fly part. Well if you are visiting toowoomba or passing by, add this zoo to your destinations.

This place is the best zoo in South East Queensland especially for the money. The guided tour is amazing the variety of animals is awesome they even let you hold a baby alligator for free if you there early enough. Staff was amazing Marlee the guide was super knowledgeable and answered all my questions. 10/10 you have to visit you can pack your own lunch to.

Such an amazing Zoo with a great vibe. Nice drive from Brisbane and a great spot to spend your day or half. Recommend reaching around 9:30am, grab your coffee and get ready for the guided tours. A great opportunity to see the animals up close (as not crowded) as they are fed and kids have so much fun watching them eat. Lion, tigers, cheetah, Giraffe, Hippo, Meerkats etc. looked happy and engaging. The tour finishes around noon so right time to grab lunch (and another coffee) and enjoy some sun in the nice picnic area while kids can watch the snake as the zoo keepers bring them out. A fun day at Darling Downs Zoo.

I love this zoo. So many animals who all look really well cared for. Talking to some of the staff they seem so genuin and loving of their work. My partner has better photos of the bigger animals like the tigers and lions and zebra. So many animals to see. Less commercial which I also love. I don't have kids and still enjoy it but of course a great place for kids too. Some improvements coming as well so in about 6 months time it should be even better.

Quite some big cats and other animals you simply won't see in Australian zoo. Deers and antelopes feeding is unique as well. Amentities are no comparison to other government funded zoo, but has more varieties of animals. I feel u will have more chance and time to spend with each animals as well due to less customers. Strongly recommended. I don't need fancy Cafe, fancy facities or fancy shops, all we need to see is more animals. You can have intimate time with their animals in short distance.I just can't believe government not funding the zoo. They are doing g a great job.

This Zoo was so different to any other. It lacks all the show elements that some of the popular Zoos have. The enclosures, the whole appearance was very natural and basic... but I absolutely loved it here. They have thought about such simple and easy ways to interact with animals, feeding the Zebras was genius, I found it so entertaining and lovely to watch. All the animals were very lively, the whole Zoo was so quiet, no loud music, making the atmosphere so much nicer than other Zoos. They have a really good selection of animals, I fed almost all of the animals that you were allowed to which really made the long trip there so worth it. The range of types of monkeys were brilliant I couldn't believe the size of some of them. We had such a lovely day out, it was hot and there were lots of flies and bugs around, so maybe some bug spray would be useful. I really do hope this Zoo expands and more money is pumped into it because it has so much more potential. I'd definitely recommend this zoo, especially as there just weren't as many people, you feel like you get your own space and time feeding the animals.

Visited the Zoo on Saturday with family and had a great day out. Drove out from Ipswich through Gatton and came home via Cunningham's Gap. Lovely drive if you haven't been out that way before, especially this time of year. Staff were very welcoming and friendly and the Zoo, while not huge, was well set out and included plenty of animals to keep us busy. Toilets and facilities are very clean and tidy and there are a few portable toilets located around the Zoo if you don't wish to walk back to the main area. Make sure you grab a map which includes animals locations and the animal talk times etc which is a must, if you want to hear more about the animals or see them being feed. A little up hill walk to the back area where the giraffes & cheetah's are located but there are a number of bench seats located around the zoo if you need a break. You can also feed a number of animals including the Zebras and Lama's with food purchased at the office/cafe/shop for $2, which is great for the kids. Overall great experience.

We absolutely loved 😍 our experience at the Darling Downs Zoo. So very glad we went there on our way home. We arrived on opening time and spent a good couple of hours here seeing animals we'd never seen before. People from Brisbane, if you are looking for something different to do get on out here. We had absolutely no idea it even existed. So glad we found it.

Great little zoo that won't take 3 days to see everything. The keepers have great stories about the individual animals. The animal experiences are awesome albeit, understandably expensive. Being able to buy inexpensive animal food made the experience even better letting us interact with some of the animals. We were immediately impressed as we entered the park as staff were carrying animals around for us to touch, where normally you would need to pay at other parks.

What a lovely zoo. We are from Brisbane and are travelling atm. We absolutely loved it for a small zoo which is also not funded. Their pricing is expensive but worth it because they need it and the animals are just lovely. The zebras, llamas and the monkeys were a fav in this family as we got up close and personal with them. Its very dry and long out there but again all worth it. Staff are friendly and you just do what you want there. Kids enjoyed themselves but I loved it more ;) $100 for the 4 of us was too good.

This Zoo is by far how a Zoo should be with both interactive animal encounters and a vast array of animals. Darling Downs Zoo exceeds all expectations. Their staff are friendly and kind. The animals are well looked after and surrounded by incredible environments to suit their habitats. We took our kids here over the weekend and were blown away with how great the experience was. Our kids got to feed the animals, learn about their habitats and where they were from in the world. Given that this Zoo has no government funding my husband and I were blown away with the care provided to these animals. It’s a true credit to the zoo and it’s staff. As we have 3 kids all under 10 this was an easy and fun filled experience and personally we would visit Darling Downs Zoo before Australia Zoo based on the activities provided and animals to see. We highly recommend visiting it’s a great price for a 10/10 experience.

The zoo is a privately owned zoo that holds animals from around the world and also breeds exotic animals. This zoo is large enough to finish it in a little over 3 hours with toilets, hand washing facilities and hand sanitizing stations throughout the park. There are guided tours at certain times to explain certain exhibits. This is great for families of all compositions and ages.

It's way out in the middle of nowhere seemingly if you take the wrong road. There is room for a lot more development at this zoo such as a proper food kiosk and coffee, and more shady trees and bench seats up where the giraffes are. I didn't like where the zebras were penned in, they needed more space so they can run about. Nonetheless a good collection of animals, I hope they can get some more sponsorship and support there to grow the zoo.

A decent zoo 40 minutes from the Toowoomba CBD, there's a variety of animals from both here and abroad. The prove of admission is well worth it as the zoo is privately owned amd the animals are well looked after. If the weather is forecast to be hot, I'd suggest taking an umbrella as there isn't much shade when walking around, however, there is shaded seating in the picnic area and a few shaded benches around the park. You can buy bags of food which you can give to certain animals around the zoo for a couple of bucks each which the kids enjoyed. Some people have said you can spend 5-6 hours at the zoo, but you can comfortably see everything in 2 or 3 if you have kids.

I have travelled many parts of the world including Botswana and visited plenty of zoos and game parks and national parks. Nothing this close though. Seeing big cats this close was enthralling and our grandkids were mesmerised. For a small privately owned zoo, this is a highly recommended experience.

a mixture of Australian and African animals, well worth the drive, very reasonable prices. toilets, gift shop, hot food and drinks, and dinning area all at the entrance. But be warned, the flys are annoying, you may want to spray yourself down with some sort of bug spray,or bring a hand held fan. but apart from that very enjoyable, kids will love all the animals.

We arrived around 10:45am. It was a shame to find many of the animals were already sleeping or resting in shady spots that made it difficult to see or feed. The glass viewing windows had a lot of glare from the sun also making it hard to see or take photos. I think it would be best to get there early or later in the afternoon. My grand daughter loved the array of birds and monkeys.

Surprisingly big with a lot to see. As someone who has been to Australia zoo multiple times. Darling Downs zoo surprised me. It's small but there are so many animals to see and it means that the kids don't get tired out too quickly. Was a great experience.

It was a hot day, so the animals were all seeking shade. Unfortunately we also were seeking shade . 2 drinks set us back $10.40 and entry for 2 was $90. I love to promote local business, but cost is getting out of control. $100 each if you want a close up experience with the meercats. Maybe if the prices were reduced, they would get more visitors, but in this day and age, where you need to watch the pennies, you won't get many return visitors. So our day was a little disappointing, as alot of animals could not be located or just a leg or body part could be seen.

We had a great time here with the kids, aged 6 and 12. Not much shade or seating areas along the walk so it does get hot! Take some suncream and cover up your shoulders so you stay protected :) At 12-1 they offer a $2.50 sausage and bread ($3.00 with onions) - if paying by EFTPOS and under $10 there is a 50 cent surcharge. Overall it was a good day out. We loved seeing all of the animals and feeding the zebras and emu. (The roos were already full)! The lion show was great and informative and loved seeing the monkey's and birds too!

Amazing day. Visitors can get so close to the animals and feed so many. The zoo was not too large to walk around and plenty of shade and seating. It was not super busy like many other zoos so was not a worry loosing children in crowds. 4-5 hrs of fun for a family of 6. Take a picnic for under the trees on the table and chairs supplied. Best to follow zoo keepers feeding times to see the animals interacting and moving about.

It's a great little zoo, not as big as the government ones but well worth the effort to go there. They do have most of the major animals with out the high cost of the big zoos. Staff are very helpful and informative on the animals they look after. To me it's a must see.

Had a great time walking around and seeing all the different animals from Africa, South America, South-East Asia and Australia, not a big zoo but a fun and interesting zoo, you can buy food and feed the animals, there are different personal experiences as well....however my favourite is still the meerkats!

Pretty good place for families with kids. The cafe area can be really cramped and when it rains it's pretty muddy.

Was very disappointing. Coming all the way from Brisbane. Everything appeared run down and needing lots of TLC. Paying $40 per person was expensive considering the state of the place. The animals looked pretty sad and lifeless behind thick mess fencing..... again very disappointing 😞

Drove here from Ipswich which takes about 1.5 hours. Our 3 year old had a blast, and particularly loved seeing the lions. This is the perfect zoo for young kids. There's not a lot of shade and if you're going in summer like we did, make sure to take a hat. It would be good to have more shade especially in the picnic area by the entrance and better food options. But all in all, a good day out.

Great little Zoo if your looking to take kids on a budget friendly outing 😁 they do have a small cafe but also have tables to bring your own picnic lunch which I recommend.

The Darling Downs Zoo, amazing. I enjoyed every minute. We arrived at 9am and found the animals very interactive. Loved it, thank you Darling Downs Zoo team!

It’s a very pleasant day out - great to show kids the animals but do note that the facilities are very basic. Best to take a picnic than rely on buying a meal - the kiosk is a little lacking but there’s ample picnic grounds to utilise. Grab a drink and ice cream there certainly, just pack your main lunch food. You can take your food in through the gate no problem. Also check show/feeding times as most are in the morning so arrive early.

What a fabulous place to take the children. Lots of animals to see. The baby giraffes were special. No good for anybody in a wheelchair. No food available but you are able to take a picnic lunch or BBQ as they have a BBQ available to cook on. We loved it.

fantastic zoo, currently expanding. interactive and encouraged to pat the safe animals with hand sanitizer at the enclosures after interactions. Very educational experience walking with the keepers at feeding times. Highly recommend this zoo for kids and adults alike. Take your own food and drinks although the souvenir shop does have a basic selection of drinks sausage rolls and the like. We will definitely be back

Nive little zoo that's growing at it own pace. Out of Brisbane 2 hours drive, the mountain road a bit of a drive, but once on the open plains it easy drive. The zoo is still growing and lots of animals to see.

Had a great day at the Darling Downs Zoo! Keepers were very knowledgeable. Our son did the meerkat encounter and had the best time with the meerkats climbing all over him. Pack a picnic lunch and make a day of it! Not many options for food unless you like pre-packaged pies and sandwiches.

Easily the best zoo in the state in terms of number and variety of animals including lions, tigers, leopards, cheetahs, giraffe, maned wolf, capybara, meerkats, lemurs etc etc. Animals are well looked after and zoo keepers talks are entertaining for adults and kids. Make sure you get there before the zoo keeper talks start at around 1015. Sausage rolls and pies at the cafe with cold drinks available and staff are friendly and helpful. Tickets $115 for family of four.

A great soo to visit. Lots of animals I have not seen before. We did not stay for the feeding and information provided by the staff but wish we did have. The gibbons were awesome. The vocals show they put on was memorable. So many tortoises perfect trip. It was very hot the day we went and the pathway is rough so water and good shoes is the go.

You can't really compare to other big zoos but it's a nice little family run business which seems to be growing. The family enjoyed it on our road trip through the area

The best zoo I’ve ever visited! Better than bigger more advertised zoos. This zoo was upfront and personal. The animal interaction was fantastic, especially the big cats. Took my grandkids and they loved every minute, my granddaughter loved the Capybaras, never seen them before. Very well kept as well. Would highly recommend a visit. Great day!

Fantastic day out, friendly staff, lots of animals. You can feed some of the animals - food bags $2. Lots of park benches and tables & chairs to have a picnic (can bring in food).

Although it's just a dirt plot, the carpark has ample space for all visitors. The ticket ladys are very friendly and offer park maps and remarkably cheap animal food to purchase. All of the animals look healthy, and all of the enclosures has descriptions on the inhabitants. The park itself could do with more shade, be it trees or shade sails along the walking track, which is also just a dirt parth and it's somewhat uneven so be sure to wear safe footwear. There are BBQs avaliable for cooking but there is no kiosk or vending machines to purchase lunch. The staff are very informative on all of the animals and will stop to chat.

My husband and I enjoyed our day at this lovely zoo. It definitely isn't the big commercial zoo like another well known zoo so because of this it wasn't too crowded. The zoo has a huge range of animals from all over the world, including lions tigers and giraffes. We followed the guided tours and enjoyed the information being shared, as well as the display of animal behaviour. We did find that we had to go back to see some of the other animals as the talks were one after the other skipping some of the less popular animals. For instance we missed the pygmy hippo talk because we wanted to see the zebras while we were at that end of the zoo. We do understand why the talks were one after the other (only a few staff who were all run off their feet). We found all the staff knowledgeable and friendly as well as happy to answer any questions asked by kids and adults alike. I would recommend taking your own food as the zoo shop only has a small selection and staff were run off their feet. The zoo is expanding and we can't wait to see what the future brings. Go help out a small family run zoo. You will enjoy your day. Make sure to take your comfy shoes and insect repellent for the flies.

We took four adults, two toddlers, and two kids. There was something for everyone. You will need a hat, water and sunscreen. We also applied bug spray as its mosquito season. Definitely should have got an annual pass as the kids are keen to go back already. Definitely take a stroller or your kids' beach wagon with you if you have little ones. It's a large zoo, and you don't want to miss the exhibits at the top of the hill. It's very much worth the hike! Bring a wheelchair if need be. The pathways around are gravel and dirt but very easy to navigate. Lots of seats for older visitors to take a break as you explore also.
