ETAR - ARCHITECTURAL AND ETHNOGRAPHIC COMPLEX- A beautiful village in Gabrovo, BULGARIA, that became popular because of its open air Museum that exhibit the tradition, culture and lifestyle of the people in Gabrovo during the early 19th Century . Inside this compound is like its own village displaying lots of types of houses for the visitors to see and experience the architectural designs they built before , the materials used for building are also exhibited here. The village is well situated surrounded by greeny hillside. A good place to walk around. There are some inhabitants demonstrating how they worked in the past decade and display the products they made during the day for sale to earn a living....you can see the old transportation facilities they used before, and the old method where they get their water supply. Foods typical from this area can also be tasted. In short, their are lots to see. It's really worth to visit this place!

My favorite stop in all of Bulgaria, I've been there twice now and they do an amazing job of keeping it up. Sad to see the carriage maker retired, his shop was amazing.

I absolutely loved this little village outdoor museum! It's in pristine condition with functional mechanics, open shops, and places to just sit and enjoy. Food and sweets available as well! I could spend a whole day here enjoying good weather. Highly recommend making a trip out and give yourself time to appreciate all the buildings and displays, as well as snacks!

Nicely done, but a bit limiting as an experience. Someone is building a massive hotel overlooking the park + right next to it there is an abandoned hotel project. You can see that the municipality is approving projects for their friends who want to do a deal.

The place itself is pretty cool to explore, so much throwback way of life to explore, but the staff there are horribly rude/ignorant/obnoxious it was almost laughable.

One of my favourite places in Bulgaria, it has really preserved the authentic atmosphere with crafts and products as they were done in the past. Highly recommend drinking a Turkish coffee with "white jam", a typical sweet you get on a spoon in a glass of water, trying the sugar lollies or the freshly beaked bread and strolling along the small and picturesque market street.

We were there 2 hours before closing we buy tickets without warning and all the buildings and exhibitions were closed.. so we saw nothing just the street.. cashier at entrance was very unpleasant.. so better go in the morning or find out first, what is open..

The Open Air Ethnographic Museum "Etar," nestled on the northern fringes of Bulgarka Nature Park and serving as a distinct quarter of Gabrovo in northern Bulgaria, stands as a living exhibit of the nation's rich heritage. This open-air museum bridges the natural splendor of the park with the urban charm of Gabrovo, offering a unique glimpse into the vibrant customs, culture, and artisanal skills that define Bulgaria. Visitors to this ethno village are treated to an immersive experience that brings Bulgarian traditions and culture to life. The setting, marked by its picturesque beauty, provides a perfect backdrop for delving into the local way of life. One of the highlights of the museum is the traditional bakery, which is an essential stop for any visitor. Here, one can witness the art of Bulgarian bread-making, an integral part of the country's culinary tradition. The museum's dedication to showcasing various aspects of Bulgarian craftsmanship extends beyond just baking. Artisans demonstrate age-old techniques in woodworking, pottery, and weaving, among others, allowing visitors to appreciate the skill and creativity that have been passed down through generations. This cultural haven not only educates but also captivates those who seek to understand and appreciate the historical and cultural fabric of Bulgaria.

Despite visiting on a busy weekend, it was very easy and quick to buy tickets. We didn't have to queue more than 5mins anywhere through the village. Service was very quick and excellent in all shops and restaurant. There is so much to see and learn in the Etar village, I only wish we had gone earlier so we could spend a full day there. A brilliant place to learn about Bulgarian culture and traditions.

One of the best maintained museums in Bulgaria! It was exceptionally clean, with a lot of places to rest under the trees, while learning how the people in the region have been living a few centuries back. There are a lot of working expositions with diagrams and explanations of how the different machines work and what their main purpose is. You can also buy handmade goods on site, some of them are made in the complex (for example the sugary treats goods in the bakery). If you visit the museum during the craftmanship festival, you can see the craftsmen in action and buy something that was made in front of your eyes.

(Translated by Google) Open-air museum 8 km south of the center of Gabrovo. It is located at the northern end of the Bulgarka Nature Park, between the park and the city of Gabrovo. It presents Bulgarian customs, culture and crafts. It covers an area of 7 ha and covers a total of 50 facilities, including a water mill, houses with craft workshops. The whole is to illustrate the architecture, lifestyle and economy of Gabrovo and the region during the Bulgarian National Revival. The construction of the museum began in 1963 under the direction and design of Lazar Donkov. The previously existing Karadzheyka water mill, built around 1780, was completely rebuilt, and the remaining facilities were built later. The complex was opened on September 7, 1964 and declared a national park in 1967 and a cultural monument in 1971. The park has typical Bulgarian revival houses with two floors, bay windows, including a house with a clock tower and a beautifully decorated Saakov's house with 21 windows. The place presents 20 features of regional crafts, incl. woodcarving, pottery, copper products, furriers, cutlery, needlework, etc. Unfortunately, during my visit, the site was closed due to a pandemic. Istniejący wcześniej młyn wodny Karadzheyka, zbudowany około 1780 r. został gruntownie przebudowany, a pozostałe obiekty wybudowano później. Miejsce prezentuję 20 cech regionalnych rzemiosł, m.in. snycerstwo, garncarstwo, wyroby miedziane, kuśnierstwo, sztućce, robótki ręczne itp. Niestety podczas mojej wizyty miejsce było zamknięte z powodu pandemii.

Wonderful and unique place for a long walk and delving into the moors, culture and crafts of Bulgarian life in 19th century. Excellently kept. One can see and experience how tapestry, leather, silver and other typical of the revival times goods were produced. There are workshops with several generations craftsmen working there. A lot and of the instruments are triggered by water. One can buy handmade unique items, but mostly take a deep breath, enjoy the splendid views and listen to nature.

Amazing place which brings you back lively in centuries. Friendly stuff ready to explain everything. Beautiful even in a rainy season. The coffee made on hot sand was very tasty. In side some pumpkin jam or walnuts pie is recommended.

This is an amazing historical place. All the craftsman could be seen working as they did in the 1700. Place I love coming back to every time I visit Gabrovo. It is worth it.

We've bought tasty sweets and some special bread. The kids have grabbed some handmade toys and we've chosen a knife and an wooden plate for our home and for a gift. Apart from the old traditional architecture we also saw a nice art exhibition.

This a great idea to create an open museum of the Bulgarian culture and crafts from the past. It takes back in the time and you can feel the spirit. Another great idea is to create this game, that makes you search answers for the different crafts. It makes you not only an indifferent observer, but hungry to find out new things. It's a place worth to visit and it's close to Gabrovo.

Spent a fantastic few hours here today. Parked in the lot next door and then spent all morning wandering through the complex, looking at the different buildings and crafts. There's a wonderful bakery where we bought delicious banitsa, and a confectioners selling all manner of lovely treats including the Gabrovo 'chocolate,' Pestil (dried plums) which was yummy! The restaurant looked good too, although we didn't eat there. A family ticket cost 9lv - very reasonable indeed!

Gorgeous place. Fair entry price. The nature and buildings create a great atmosphere. When we were there we even saw the mill working.

Very nice village and park ,contains many houses represents many traditional professions with an traditional artitechtutes and houses of bulgaria.some built 250 years ago. You can buy some wooden stuff with reasonable prices cheaper than in Sofia. Some food and drinks available to eat and drink. Restaurant opposite to entrance but close at 6 pm. Roads are made of stones like old traditional roads which is beautiful but not suitable for wheelchairs. Entrance fee 6 leva

Amazing way to travel back in time, see live village "technology" in perfect harmony with nature. The village is skillfully brought to life by the various craftsmen who are working under your eyes. Restaurants, coffee, authentic souvenirs, nature, all in one place for a couple of idyllic hours.

Not what it used to be! The old masters of each art are mostly absent. Younger people manage the stands and mostly sell instead of making demonstrations of the crafts. The site is being renovated partially so there where vehicles, cables, electric chainsaws which ruin the historical illusion this beautiful place creates. I was disappointed but there is still a lot to see and many things are explained in videos and printed materials. I’d still recommend it but with a guide and demonstrations of the different crafts.

Definitely worth the visit. It tells short stories about crafts and you can peak in traditional houses. Also, there is a delicious bakery. It is kid-friendly but difficult for strollers or wheelchairs.

It is marvellous that people working in this place are trying to keep and promote the traditions and customs of the Bulgarian people from hundreds of years ago.
