Gagron Fort  is a hill and water fort and is situated in Jhalawar district of Rajasthan, in the Hadoti region of India. It is an example of a hill and water fort. The fort was built by Bijaldev Singh Dod (a Rajput king) in the twelfth century. Later, the fort has also been controlled by Sher Shah and Akbar. The fort is constructed on the confluence of Ahu River and Kali Sindh River. The fort is surrounded by water on three sides and a moat on the forth side and hence earned the name Jaladurg . It was designated a UNESCO world heritage site in 2013 as a part of Hill Forts in Rajasthan.

The fort is the only forth in North India surrounded by water and has been named the Jaladurga (Water Fort) of India. A mausoleum of Sufi Saint Mitthe Shah just outside the fort is the venue for an annual colourful fair held during the month of Moharram. There is also a monastery of Saint Pipaji across the confluence.

This fort has been awarded World Heritage Site status in 2013. Its location is unique. River Ahu merges into river Kalisindh and there after takes a turn alongside a massive high hill. On this rock and the hill is the place where fort was built in 7th to 12th century. Exact date or the name of the king who initiated the construction is not known. Fort has massive gates, palace, armoury, temple and even Dargah. As at present it is not well maintained and there is growth of wild grass, shrubs etc. as can be seen in photos. From the Ram Burj you can have a panoramic view which is fantastic. One good thing is that you can take your vehicle in and cruise at 5 kmph if you like. No restaurant or stall is there. No guide was available.

This fort is The First Fort with Water & Hill !! Also no Foundation work done in the FORT ! Located in the Jhalawar district of Rajasthan, this fort is surrounded by water from all sides. Not just this, but the fort is unique in its own way as it is the only fort which doesn’t have any foundation. Gagron Fort’s popularity has been spread far and wide for its glorious history and awe-inspiring architecture. Gagron fort was constructed by the Dod king Bijaldev in the 12th century and the fort was ruled by the Khinchi kingdom for 300 years. Although the exact time of the construction is not known. Historians say that the fort was built from the seventh century to the fourteenth century. It has witnessed a total of 14 wars and 2 Jauhars (Hindu custom of mass self-immolation). The magnificence of the fort can be estimated by the fact that it has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Gagron Fort is strategically built on the confluence of two rivers Ahu and KaliSindh that flow in deep gorges. Built by Parmar Rajputs as Dodha-Garh and later developed by Khichi Chauhans of the Jhalawar region of Rajasthan this is one of the 6 forts of Rajashtan included in the UNESCO world heritage list. The fort has many buildings and structures like the Barudkhana ammunition section, palaces, pavilions, DwarkaDheesh Krishna Temple. These buildings are spread all over the fort premises and there were various entrance gates to control access to these palaces and sections as seen in the collage below. The walls along the river-sides are hundreds of feet tall and wide enough to allow two horsemen each to pass across. The river overflows in the rainy season and the tour guide told me the view is breathtakingly majestic. This is similar in many ways to the views at the Garadia Mahadev temple. There is ample accessible parking and I cold drive right inside the fort through the various gates. There is also a tactile map of the fort for the visually impaired. Ramps are present everywhere to access the various temples, palaces, and sections of the fort. But , this fort needs more basic aminites for tourist and proper maintenance.

Gagron fort was constructed during the twelfth century by the king Bijaldev and the fort was ruled by the Khinchi kingdom for 300 years. The exact date on which the fort was constructed remains a mystery but historians estimate that the fort was constructed from the seventh century to the fourteenth century. The last ruler of this fort is reported to be king Achal Das Khinchi. During the medieval power, there muslim rulers of Malwa attacked Gagron fort. Sultan Hoshang Shah attacked the fort in the year 1423 with an army that included 30 thousand horsemen and 84 elephant riders. Achal Das Khinchi, on realizing that his defeat was inevitable, due to the Sultan's superior numbers and higher grade weapons, did not surrender and fought till he lost his life, which is accordance to Rajput tradition. Furthermore, many women performed jauhar (burnt themselves alive), in order to avoid being taken captive by the Sultan's forces.[5][3] The fort has reportedly seen 14 battles and 2 jauhars of queens. The fort has also been conquered by Sher Shah and Akbar. Akbar also reportedly made this fort a headquarter and later gave it to Prathviraj of Bikaner as a part of his estate. Very very nice fort everyone to see this historical place.

The fort has a grand aerial view. Although it has been declared a world heritage by unesco, the fort looks neglected. Maintenance is minimal. You see grasses invading every part of the fort. The concerned officials should look into it.

Gagron Fort is a Water Fort, built on a rocky gorge on the banks of the Kalisindh River. It's strategically built on the confluence of the Kalisindh & Ahu rivers, so it's surrounded by water on almost 3 sides, hence the term Water Fort. The buildings inside the fort complex are still in good shape, & one can see the building skills of the Khinchi Rajputs , the original builders of this fort. The bastions of the fort are huge, & it's beyond imagination how such large pieces of rock were brought to build the fort. It's has a Unique triple walled fortification, almost impossible to breach. The single piece carved stone grain containers are a unique thing to see, with stone lids. A must visit place if you are any where near Jhalawar.

This place needs maintenence. Nonetheless it is worth visiting to witness the grandeur of the bygone Era. Vehicles can be taken inside the fort, inside you can park & explore the fort on foot. Do go till the end. River surrounds the fort from three sides. Beautiful views from the end of the fort.
