5/5 Great outing for the family. Learn about the aviation history of South Africa while being up close to real planes and helicopter. Free entrance (but make a donation to support the upkeep). We decided to take a trip to this museum, and after driving for 4km on a very quiet road, just before we thought that we may be lost, it appeared in front of us. Museum has utilized every inch of space to provide information about the topic. Get up close to the engines, planes, weapons and view old uniforms. There is a hanger a small walk away from the museum building and if you ask nicely you may be able to see planes being restored. Recommended outing for the whole family.

Excellent place to visit considering it's free. The people there are very helpful and explain you with any questions and are very informative as well. A definite visit if you're near the airport. Do consider donating for their cause.

We had a wonderful trip down memory lane thanks to our experienced guide. He had some interesting facts and a good knowledge of the aviation history of SA. Very well preserved piece of our heritage. Well worth a visit if you are ever in the Port Elizabeth area.

The South African Air Force Museum houses exhibits and restores material related to the history of the South African Air Force. The museum is divided into three locations, AFB Swartkop outside Pretoria, AFB Ysterplaat in Cape Town and at the Port Elizabeth airport.

I enjoyed visiting the museum. There is a lot to see here. The spitfire is the highlight. If you are visiting on a hot day, make sure you dress cool as it is hotter in the hangars. I was sad to hear that the museum receives no government funding and relies on donations.

It was nice seeing the old and historic aircraft! The exterior is a bit neglected, perhaps because people don't pay entrance fees: just a free will donation. Nevertheless, the place is really worth a visit, it's a must if you go to PE! I loved it.

A great learning experience. The kids particularly enjoyed the aircraft jungle gym. Reasonably priced items at the curio shop. Cap at R70 and R100 for a mug.

Most wonderful hidden gem in Port Elizabeth. There is some much history here. Kids, moms, dad's, everyone will love it. It is so well planned and laid out and the guys manning it on a volunteer basis are so knowledgeable, most of them ex servicemen. Don't miss this museum if you're a petrolhead or you enjoy history.

Very educational, had a walkthrough with a friend of the museum, he was very knowledgeable and passionate. Museum has a great collection of old letters, official documents, photos, newspapers clippings, pilot note books, old flying instruction handbooks, and even historic pilot flying log books.

We are in Eastern Cape for 5 years now and we never knew that this place existed. The reason is that there are no advertising. Tis is a gem hidden away at the back of the airport. This was a great place to visit. You just need to advertise more.

Completely discipointted as my 8 and 3 year old children were not even allowed to access the cockpits. Poor manager's display of attitude at the simulator where we were sternly prohibited to touch anything - Only to learn a week later that all was excessed by my daughter's friend. How disgusting for SAAF! Yes, go for a visit, but keep your donation small.

Definately stop by if you are in the area. Entrance is free. There's much to see and read about in their display area including an art gallery. They have a separate hanger with the old Harvard, Bosbok and other old aircraft. They also have a souvenir shop where you can buy mugs, books, magazines, stickers, coins, and many more trinkets. Just make sure to show your support by dropong a donation before you leave.

  • 5/5 Claudia Botes (. 2 years ago on Google
So much history and the people working there were so nice. You can spend a long time going through historical books, looking at the old aircraft and reading about the lives that people lived many years ago. You can also buy art, posters, books, etc to remember the lovely day you spent there.

A good alternative experience with a learning curve and its FREE entry. However there is a donation box, i reccomend tipping a few notes into it for the upkeep of the area etc.. The gentleman there are on a voluntary basis and very knowledgeable. Great getting to know some history of our air force.

Good display and particularly strong on the social history and personal stories of those involved. The restoration hanger also worth looking in as you can get very close to the exhibits and the restoration in progress that you just can't in say RAF Duxford.

The air museum gives a nice overview of the history of the SAAF from its inception. Small but interesting. There is a nice clubhouse and bar plus a theatre.these can be rented for private use. As with all facilities of this nature, drastically short of funding for upkeep and maintenance, it would be sad to loose part of the South African heritage.

  • 4/5 Jaroslav M. 4 years ago on Google
There are few exhibits at the Port Elizabeth Airport branch of the museum because of the limited hangar space available. Static exhibits are housed in the original 42-Air School Air Gunnery Training Centre used during the Joint Air Training Scheme in World War II. Active restoration is being performed on a number of North American Harvards and there is a project to restore an Airspeed Oxford.[citation needed] One of the more unusual exhibits is a Jorg IV Skimmerfoil ground effect craft.

👍 You have to buy a ticket for R88 at the lodge to get in. We enjoyed our drive around the reserve and especially the Lighthouse. It was a treat to see all the birds, fish and crabs along the shore.
