It was lovely seeing the penguins and seals and was very educational but the place needs work. Part of the aquarium has been closed down. I really hope that the necessary renovations can be done soon to return the aquarium to its former glory. The animals are in good condition but they deserve better. The museum was very interesting and much bigger than I expected, I actually ran out of time and didn't get through everything. It's seen better days but all in all Bayworld was still a really fun experience!

I really enjoy visiting the local museum when traveling and Bayworld is a real gem . It's a one of a kind combination of a zoo and museum . You get to see some of our land and aquatic wild life while also learning about prehistoric wild life and also getting a history of the people that have roamed these lands for 100 to 1000s of years . This really is a must visit place if you in Gqeberha.

Bayworld was a very fun outing. Ideal for a family setting. Prices R45 per 3-17 yrs old R40 18 years and older Free entrance below age of 3. Seal feeding was very informative. This starts at 11am and 3pm Snake talk is at 12pm. So try to arrive at 10:30, visit the seal feeding at 11, which lasts about 30 minutes, which then leaves 30 minutes to spend in the museum, before going to the snake information session. The family can be kept busy for about 2 hours. Also a nice outing for visitors from out of town.

I used to go here quite often as a child, back when there were massive mountain tortoises at the little amphitheatre... That was then... Fast forward 25-30 years and its a different story altogether. The structure is still standing... Which is a big positive. The aquarium is under construction, the dolphin pool might as well become a skate park, put it to good use for the community. The Seal pool is sparkling blue which made my heart happy, the seals look happy or as happy as can be in their little prison environment, the penguins seem quite chuffed too... The museum still remains the same with some added additions etc... The snake park... What happened? I remember snake demonstrations in the actual snake pit, the bottom section had massive glass tanks that housed to reptiles. The bottom section now has dinosaurs... Good God! Couple of snakes on the upper section, a few terrapins and two crocs... The snake enclosures are well kept and all the snakes look healthy and well maintained. Bayworld has the potential to be a massive tourist attraction, someone just needs to put their heart and soul into it. In short, the Museum is educational, even for adults, so do make a trip there if you can, the Seal pool os a draw card for any ocean lover and children, the seals are basically just big water dogs... Awesome to watch. The snakes are always a beautiful sight and draw card and also an educational experience. Take the little ones, or go alone, either or, You’ll still have a ball.

Hasn't changed since the 80s. It's reasonably well kept, and some of the exhibits, especially the ships and wrecks part, are great, but the whole place could do with a major overhaul. Are you listening, Eastern Cape government? No, of course you're not.

Very disappointed. The water for the seals and penguins are extremely dirty. The garden around the reptiles are not been kept nice and tidy. I actually feel sorry for the animals. Not even humans would wanne live like that. The staff was also not very friendly.

Entry is R40 per person, kids are free up to a certain age. Was ok. Saw the seals being fed. Snake show was abit boring. Good way to kill an hour or so

The museum is good, reptile park was ok. Unfortunately the aquarium was under maintenance and couldn't go there. A lot of the museum things could have been kept more cleaner, it has accumulated a bit of dust over the years especially the ones sealed inside a case.

I am so happy Bayworld is open once again. I must say that is very entertaining and educational. We were lucky enough to see the feeding of the seals and penguins and get educated on snakes (yip I touched one). The staff are friendly and accommodating as well as very willing to answer all questions. The aquarium is still closed which was a bit of a let down but work is in progress........can't wait for our second visit in the near future once the aquarium is open. If you love history and the ocean, you will have an amazing time. The price per person is very affordable and worth every cent.

I simply love Bayworld. I visit every couple of months and am always happy to see the displays. The reptile park is my favourite part of the adventure, since the dolphins left a few years ago. But there are still penguins and seals to visit. With both a snake talk and a seal talk happening everyday. The museum hasn't had many overall updates over the last decade I have been visiting. But every few month there is a new display at the front entrance, ranging from a gorgeous bull frog a few years ago to the most recently added large seal info display. And a bonus this visit was a rescued otter playing in one of the snake park enclosures. I got to watch him swim in his little pool, eat a fish for brunch and then snuggle up in a freshly washed blanket.

Very torn about how I should rate Bayworld. Even though the aquarium was closed due to construction I still feel you do get bang for your buck. The museum is great and offers many interesting facts and artifacts relating to maritime history, fashion, sea life, photography, birds and coral. The building itself can definately benefit from a renovation and some modernizing as it does feel abit dark and dingy. The dinosaur exhibition is also really informative for the kids and introduces the visitor to the Algoasaurus which was discovered in Port Elizabeth. Lifelike models of some pretty impressive herbivores and carnivores make for great photo opportunities. My criticism stems solely from the live animal exhibitions. One can view turtles, snakes and even crocodiles. The enclosures these animals currently reside in are very small, rather dirty, overgrown, badly maintained and offer the animal very little stimulation and interest. I would prefer if they would forgo the live exhibitions and perhaps focus their resources and energy on expanding, maintaining and renovating the museum portion as this currently has the most potential. I am unable to comment on the aquarium as it was under construction during my visit.

Wow. I was so saddened to see how the snake park and oceanarium have become derelict versions of years gone by. The Tropical house is especially emotional for me as my father's ashes were scattered inside. Now it's a shut down, vacant shell. On the upside...the museum is still worth a visit. So 😔

  • 4/5 Charl W. 2 years ago on Google
Amazing variety of subjects covered in museum, not just the oceans. Exhibits are in good condition. Just enough live animals to keep kids interested, but not so much to become a dredge. Only downside is the aquarium that is currently closed. Only expected to open around December (2021)

Great place to visit with your children. Informative and they need practical donations like towels buckets brooms and prawns and other fresh fish. Please open the aquarium!!!

Your Facebook page shows that you are currently open on weekdays till 16:30. Today I fetched my little one early from school to visit Bayworld, only to find the doors shut and nobody answering my phonecalls. This was very disappointing to say the least. On the other hand, our visit to SANCCOB thereafter was wonderful. They were open (as stated online) and keen to show us around. Perhaps you could learn a few lessons from them.

Had an very nice outing with the little ones. They were intrigued by all the stuff in the museum. They also loved seeing the seals and penguins. Just a pity there are still no dolphins.

Would rate this place five stars but it's so run down due to lack of funds and they're only open during week days which is when people are either working or at school, it's terrible But the place itself is amazing and the atmosphere is great, if you ever find the chance to go then go

I feel really bad for the staff at Bayworld. They are passionate and friendly and love what they do. Due to poor management and procedure they aren't open on the weekend and thus funding has suffered. The museum is great and very informative

The museum is very informative and is an easy way to spend a few hours. The snakes in the reptile section are huge... Scary huge! Awesome experience.

Well documented history of things, water world and wild life. I loved the snake park with their enormous pythons and mamba. Sad the aquarium is still not operational. Also it doesnt make sense why it's closed during the weekends when most people are free and not at work

  • 4/5 Fredah T. 5 months ago on Google
We were welcomed by the friendly staff, they informed us that the aquarium is closed due to construction. The museum is big, has a variety of things to look for. It was the first time I see fashion section in a museum. What was more interesting was a section that contains a list and things that happened first in PE. The snake section is something else, saw the biggest python. It was a nice experience, hope after the constructions the place will be maintained to standard.

Horrible staff at the ticket office. So rude and feels like you are at a government-owned entity. No service and a complete lack of customer satisfaction not to mention the horrible service... no wonder this place has failed over and over. Until the mentality of the workers there has changed this place will fail even after the revamps...

  • 3/5 Christopher M. 5 months ago on Google
It's very sad to see what the aquarium has become over the years. The museum on the other hand is a very interesting place to visit. Would recommend going to it.

This was a leading tourist attraction and proud service to nature. There was no reason why it had to be torn down and destroyed. Reflect on the reasons for it and eradicate the mistakes by the 1994 democratic government. So, jail corrupt criminals and let under qualified officials do the jobs they can. An efficiently managed Bayworld will regenerate revenue and reward honest efforts with more and more jobs. The true execution of democracy is the opposite of destruction. It invigorates and cares for nature and man.

.....We were impressed by this rather small Aquarium which is playing a very big part in educating it’s visitors with the great danger “Litter” is to the Sea-Life!...Great work guys! And good luck in the future! A must visit when in Port Elizabeth.....The maritime & natural history museum was just as impressive with lots on display! The “Jurassic Park” display is awesome

  • 1/5 Ruhan K. 3 years ago on Google
I would not recommend Bayworld. This place is not worth the admission fee. Everything is badly deteriorated including the entrance. There was a very bad smell coming from the now derelict dolphin enclosure that still has rotting sea water inside. The inside of the museum is incredibly outdated and dusty and all the marine life that were kept in tanks were either dead or dying. The owners should sell this place to someone that cares about it and is willing to restore it to its former glory.
