What a lovely experience, by far the best museum in South Africa. The displays are world-class. It's worth the visit, there are a variety of displays, from natural history to the famous Coelacanth. The curatorship is absolutely perfect. Just note that when looking for the entrance to the museum, look for the theatre entrance, that is the entrance to the museum, it is in Dawson Road.

Every time we go it is fun and informative. I discover something I didn’t notice before each time. There are some new displays which are very interesting; Imifino, Auriel Batten, as well as before and after photographs of East London. The place is well maintained and the entry fee is very reasonable.

Rainy day in EL, enjoyed the visit. Well done to the curator and the team. Became a bit warm towards the end, aircon could have helped, but did not influence the good experience we had!

Interesting unique museum, unfortunately I should have budgeted more time to see and read all. It's got the last known Dodo egg, the first living colorants discovered, and even a real living bee hive that you can open up and look inside while the busy little bees continue their work millimeters away from your face and fingers. I was even able to buy a stack of excellent second hand books

A friend we are visiting in East London suggested this museum and it was a fascinating way to spend a few hours. The story of the once thought extinct coelacanth and the last known dodo egg is now incredibly interesting to see and hear about.

I went for nostalgia. It was a very pleasant visit. The place seems to be well maintained. The only issue I had was that the place seems a bit dull now. Maybe it's because I haven't been there for years... Overall It was a nice outing for my little one. He enjoyed seeing all these new but old items and experiencing the museum for the first time with him was a memory I'll cherish. It's a lovely little outing for the little ones.

Theme of the museum is as relevant now as it was when in opened in the 1920s ito of evolution of animals by land and sea. History of SA and wider world is also included - while they have great variety of oceanic shell species, moth and butterfly species one can spend a few hours lost in time.

Took the kids to an open day and they had the BEST time. Some things are still as I remember from being a child myself and some really cool new additions. Love this museum and I know the kids loved it too.

Sad state of maintenance. No map or informative brochure. Went for nostalgia and childhood memories. Curation seems to have stopped in 2000 with very little recent history. ⚠️ If you suffer from sinusitis or sensitivity to dusty or musty smells, be warned.

Wow, totally enjoyed bringing the kids here. The museum is full of useful information with wonderful displays. For an entry fee of merely R15 (kids) and R25 (adults), it's well worth the visit.

If anyone wants to have a better understanding of East London, South Africa, this museum is a go to area. Superb museum tours with Kevin Cole and the museum team. The history and information about Eastern cape from the ancient times (as early as 20 000 years ago) to modern day is well elaborated. The world's oldest archaic footsteps are also displayed in this Museum. Happy visit

Great museum to Visit. Winchester castle round table replica. This table was carried on the Union Castle liner "Winchester Castle" 1930-1953 and was presented to the Association of Round Tables of Southern Africa by the Director when this old vessel was sent to the ship breakers in 1961. Currently stored at the Museum in East London.

Amazing information & displays. Our family enjoyed the Museum - perfect family, rainy day outing. Definately reccommend a trip to the East London Museum. My kids loved seeing the dodo egg & world's oldest human trace fossil footprints. Incredible sea shells display! The information & attention to detail in displays are mind blowing

A very nice museum to visit with different areas of history. The displays are well layed out with easy access for young and old. Pity that the meteorite was stolen a while ago, and would also like the contents of Victoria house to be in display

A great museum with local history as well as broader themes, not to mention the famous oldest footprint in the world. Spent one hour but easily could've spent two.

  • 4/5 callan e. 5 years ago on Google
For a small museum it houses some famous stuff. This is the place that houses the world renowned Coelacanth - the extremely rare fish that was caught near East London, of which fossils have also been found dating back to the Devonian era, 400 million years ago. The museum also has the only known egg from the extinct Dodo bird. And a set of fossilised human footprints in beach sand dating back 200,000 years and believed to be the oldest human footprints in the world. There are also displays on shipwrecks along the local coast and Xhosa tribal life and beautful bead work.
