Inspired by the Paris Opera, it was completed in 1909. Features gold-plated elements in the roof as well as the large eagle on top. For the pest photo opportunities stand on the Cinelandia square (this way you should be able to capture the eagle) and from the Camara Municipal staircase across the road. Also don't forget to take photos from the sides: the columns and the ceiling of the second floor.

What an absolutely glamorous and magnificent building! It reminds me of Garnier in Paris BUT there is a distinct difference in the style of the lower ground level. It is completely decorated in a ancient Mesopotamian design with Babylonian Gods and Heroes decorating the walls. The rest of the theatre has the typical, opulent glamour. There are English tours in the afternoon for a small fee but so worth it. The Fine Art Gallery and State Library are just across the road also.

The Theatro Municipal(Municipal Theatre) is an opera house in the Centro district ofRio de Janeiro, Brazil. Built in the beginning of the twentieth century, it is considered to be one of the most beautiful and important theatres in the country. The building is designed in an eclectic style, inspired by the Paris Opéra of Charles Garnier. The outside walls are inscribed with the names of classic European & Brazilian artists. It is located near the National Library and the National Fine Arts Museum, overlooking the spacious Cinelândia Square.

Nice Theater from early 1900s. The most famous in Brazil. I recommend the guided tour with an overview of inside area. I did on Saturday at 11a.m and it costs 20R$.

One of the main theatres (show house) in Brazil and Latin America. The building was inspired on Opera from Paris. I watched the Chinese orchestra here in a free event and it was truly amazing. The sound and the atmosphere makes a spectacular show. On weekdays you can ask for a guided tour. If you're in Rio, I'm a local guide here. One of the few magnificent architects in town, took inspiration from the Opera House “Palau’s Garnier”. Unfortunately it doesn’t seem well kept. Ground floor main hall was in a Persian theme which was unusual.

Truly spectacular historical theater in rio de janeiro that is still preserved and has events. If you have time to visit here and see a concert, definitely consider it. The surrounding area is quite abandoned but that's very much the city of rio. 10/10 5/5

It’s just such a marvelous building with great performances. They turn up the air-con a lot and it will be cold. Bring a jacket or scarf to keep warm and comfortable

Beautiful theatre with beautiful interior. Come at least 15-20 mins before a performance to take some time for enjoying the interior.

Beautiful imperial building. Worth paying R20 for the 1 hour tour so you can see the interior.

Security was disappointing. I went there for one Indian concert. Had worst experience from security. One of the worst and humiliating experience. Quite racist too.Disappointing experience of my life. I still remember faces of those guards. Sorry for negative experience. My Apologies 🙏

Went there for Swan Lake. Come early enough to enjoy the best popcorn vendors in Rio who set up in front of the theater. The historic building could be kept up a little better, but then it would lose its "transportational" vibe. It makes one feel as if suddenly one has entered a turn of the century venue.

Still sacha a beautiful building! The “Salão Assírio concert” was fantastic! Even my mother, who is elderly and has some memory problems sang “Asa Branca” along with the whole room. Thank you so much! It was moving and unforgettable. Also, the usher at the door was extremely helpful to let us into the theater with a wheelchair and the bathroom was accessible. WE HAD THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME! Thank you all!!!!

A beautiful building based on European style theatres. Marble and frescoes all over.

The building itself brings yoy back in time. Great place for concerts and ballets.

Unprofessional and amateru administration staff and lack of respect towards visitors. They keep it close and dont even inform on Page or anywhere. Totally wasted time.

It reminds me the Paris’s Opera House. The theater has good acoustics and comfortable seats.
