The place to find all of your hand-made goods of Guatemala. Leather goods, clothing, fancy shirts, shoes, purses, and much, much more. Great food stalls available and always busy with vendors and customers. A nice place to shop for the day.

Central Market (Mercado Central) is an indoor large shopping area located right in the middle of the historic center of Guatemala City (Zone 1). However, some of the same merchants sell products outdoors right in front of it. It is a three level shopping area but is not visibly seen as a large building. In fact most of these three stores are almost underground so don’t be looking for a tall three story building. The market is located at the rear of the Metropolitan Cathedral and this is how we found it. You will see a lot of vendors selling diverse merchandise and then follow the steps down to observe colorful and lively stands with fruits and vegetables, meat, spices, teas and coffee, you name it. Vendors in the market also sell items ranging from handmade items to mass produced souvenirs, knickknacks, art pieces. It was our favorite place due to its atmosphere and vitality, i.e., a place for people watching, buying souvenirs, trying different exotic treats and unknown foods, or simply exploring the shopping scene in Guatemala City. It falls into a “MUST visit” category in the city and of course traversing those these very colorful and joyful rows and rows of produce and goods is FREE unless you decide to purchase an item/ pay for food (and bring CASH). The market has three parts to it - grocery items, prepared food/restaurant area, and souvenirs/ knick knacks. Food items range from locally sourced to freshly baked right at the market. Dining is available for those who want to enjoy a prepared meal or sample unique varieties of tea, pastries, meats, cheese. The top level is the best area to find artisans hard at work. Tourists may find jewelry, pottery, clothing, and leather items. It is an overall rewarding experience and is highly recommended. Allocate somewhere between half an hour to few hours to visit the place.

I wish I would’ve came here my first night in GC to buy produce and meats. This place has everything - your souvenir stores, meat markets, produce stands, seasoning sections, food court with breakfasts and lunches… EVERYTHING!

Huge local market to get lost in 🇬🇹 The perfect place to get local goods, produce, meat, food and souvenirs. 3 floors and many stalls inside along with streets of stalls around the area. Would love to go back to try the food! ⚠️ It is a dangerous area right now so be very mindful when outside

What an incredible way to experience life through the eyes of the locals. One can find anything in the market, crafts, souvenirs, food, clothing, shoes, Piñatas and gifts.

For an authentic market experience, visit Mercado Central. You will find the best prices for souvenirs and any other items you may be looking for including fresh fruit, flowers, candy and everything else in between. Just be warned that some food stalls may charge you higher prices as a tourist which was the case at Rosita's restaurant stall (My mom did recommend "Dona Mela" but unfortunately they were too packed) and most stalls may not be veggie friendly since this isn't common in Guatemala. (I did say, "Authentic", after all.)

It was a great experience for me. Everyone is friendly and welcoming. Much cheaper to buy the stuff you want to take home than tourist spots.

Unbelievable...some prices are higher than the ones in the supermarket, the main focus is to get money from tourists. Parking lot very crowded... In order to get cheaper prices you need to 1.- Ask a Guatemalan friend to buy the items for you or. 2.- Pretend that you are Guatemalan and speak with Guatemalan accent 😀

This market is massive and all right in Guatemala City! There are lots of levels with different things you can find this market from food, local restaurants, and artesanal accessories! It is a very colorful market that is a must-go to when visiting Guatemala!

Nice and friendly people all around the stores. Delicious Guatemalan food at low cost in the comedores which are very clean.

This is a really colourful and vibrant place that I surely recommend as long as you know that you will not be looking or shopping in peace and as long as you expect vendors to triple the price for you as a foreigner. I was greeted and asked to come in at every single stall that I passed ( and there are a lot!). Although vendors are not agresssive, I felt annoyed. I have watched recent Spanish YouTube videos of locals buying stuff there so I had an idea of the price but I was quoted 3 times more . I left after 30 min because I felt overwhelmed by the vendors and the inability to just look at something without having them pounce on me .I did see some very unique fruits and vegetables, unknown herbs and lots of colourful shoes, purses, cloths, clothing and crafts. It’s a must see but come prepared.

Great place to buy souvenirs, food, pottery and a lot of different products at great prices. It is the central market so there's is big variaty to choose from, I. Terms of products and sellers. Take care as it may not be safe to wonder outside. There is parking on site.

Very nice marketplace, has allot of stuff to see and purchase if you’re interested in souvenirs, prices are reasonable and they are willing to bargain. It’s like a large flea market, 3 levels, with food/ fruits & vegetables and a large variety of home goods. Would recommend checking it out if you’re in Guatemala City

A busy market full of super fresh produce. Official market days are Monday, Thursday and Saturday when the freshest new arrivals will roll in. The market closes early (1pm) on Sundays. Make sure you try some rambutans

Nice place to grab some souvenirs and let the kids feed the pigeons.

  • 5/5 Rosa R. 3 years ago on Google
People were really nice and you could find just about anything you need. Sunday morning is not crowded at all and if you are looking for a great place to eat go to Rosita's. :-)

If you’re into these kind of stuff then you should have a great experience. Sadly, nothing really original. All the stores sell the same, as if manufactured in a factory and these are just resellers :(

  • 5/5 Anthony C. 2 years ago on Google
Very nice market, highly recommended as there's a level for craft on a specific level, a second level with food restaurants and stalls + vegetables and fruits. A specific level for local residents where they may different kitchen wares
