Not a review of how it is today. I grew up right across the street from this site. Left Guatemala when I was 12. The memories are just incredible, as there two homes across the street toward another small hill and that was it in that direction back in the early 70s even. Lots of caves everywhere under the ground, but I imagine most of them are no longer accessible as the major earthquake in 1976 probably ended those tours. I envy anyone that goes there today. I have not visited since I left that same year as the eathquake.

The prehistoric Maya center of Kaminalyuju in highland Guatemala is now mostly under modern Guatemala City. Only earthen mounds (and not stone pyramids) are the readily visible surface indication of the prehistoric site. Kaminalyuju had trade connections with a number of other Maya cities and more distant sites such as Teotihuacan in the Mexico City region. A lot of archaeological investigations at Kaminalyuju took place in the 1940s and 1950s.

A relatively small park compared to some of the other Mayan ruin sites, but an important one because it is one of the few from the early Maya period.

Great place better if you get a guide before you arrived, it is a very interesting place there is a lot of history around it.

Entrance costs Q5 for Guatemalans and Q50 for foreigners without a Guatemalan ID. This site is definetly not worth Q50. There's a tiny museum, and a couple of excavation sites. The buildings were built of clay, so it basically looks like dirt with the top layer of dirt scraped off. Most of the explanatory signs have faded in the sun, so unless you have an archeological student or profesor to point things out it's a fairly pointless way to spend an hour or so. The high point for me was that I am no longer curious why such a centrally located site has so few photo's posted, there's really nothing to take photos of.

Excellent for ceremony, however there's no water or the restrooms are out service half of the time.

Interesting but over priced for foreigners. The guide was friendly and seemed to be fairly knowledgeable though he did not speak English.

The meaning of Kaminaljuyu is Hill of the dead. This archaeological site has a museum, the Acropolis, La Palangana, and the ceremonial area. Throughout the park I found people, couples, and families doing prayers and religious ceremonies. To make these rites people use cacao, bouquets, veils, and make figures or crafts with tree branches. It is also a place where families come for picnics, to walk, to rest and connect with nature.

This place will give you a opportunity to know some places into the Mayans world, you will see rituals sometimes and people with some special characteristics.

There is no parking lot. You have to leave your vehicle in the street with no security. We decided not to go in the park.
