2022: This museum has a great mix of local, national and cultural history/artifacts. The central court is great for photo ops and has really impressive examples of Mayan and Olmec art. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. I would definitely suggest stopping by when in Antigua. Update: 2023, they have added on a lot to this museum, it is now even more amazing than before with more than twice the amount of beautiful pieces and areas to explore. A must see when in the area!

Best museum in town. Thematically arranged, with label in both Spanish and English, and audio guides in multiple languages. Housed in the former governor’s palace, the building itself is interesting and also the balcony facing the main square has a great view. The baroque polychrome sculpture is fantastic. It provides a great overview of the art history of Guatemala. And it’s FREE!

(Translated by Google) The museum is in very good condition (it is currently undergoing restoration phases) in the part that is open to the public they exhibit interesting pieces but the most beautiful thing is that now they give you an audio at the entrance to give a brief description of the piece, some have a written description and another you can listen to the audio, this new technique is very innovative. Anxious for the other phases. Ansiosa por las demás fases.

A special mention for the impressive stelae found in its central patio, heritage of the Mayan Culture. Loved this museum, it's beautiful and huge! The exhibits were interesting and the staff were friendly. Definitely would recommend! It's also free, just make sure you bring a piece of ID because they ask for your information prior to entering.

(Translated by Google) Simply incredible. Seeing our declaration of independence and the manuscripts of the national anthem was impressive. Definitely a place to visit while in Antigua. Take the opportunity to see the cathedral like never before and enjoy a different day in the city. Photos of some of my favorite works. (Original) Simplemente Increíble. An excellently curated free museum showing the history of Guatemalan art all the way from the pre-Mayan period through to contemporary art (albeit presented in reverse order.) The informative signs (which include English translations) give a great sense of how everything fits into context without overwhelming with details. The only slight niggle was the long queue for them to take passport details down at the start - not sure why this is needed or why it couldn’t be more efficient. But it’s well worth the wait once you’re inside!

(Translated by Google) Nice museum, it is located in a wonderful place next to the central park of Antigua. There are a variety of exhibition rooms and archaeological pieces. It is to spend a whole morning seeing the exhibitions that are on the first and second level. In the center of the museum there is a large patio where they hold events. Unfortunately, I was really disappointed. The is no proper order or organisation to the museum and even the audio guide in English isn't spoken clearly and at the beginning of each recording, you have to listen to music and the description isn't. When you first walk in, you see modern art. Right at the end, you see the archeological arts. They have so many staff in places showing you where to go when they can just have signs. They asked me for my passport or other id. I found this uncomfortable. Why would you go to a museum and give them this private information. I gave them my driving license as a deposit for the audio phone.

FREE and extensive! Ignore the Shirina review, this place was recently redone and has an extensive well presented collection. Probably one of the best in the country.

This museum is perhaps the best we have seen in years of traveling. The building itself is an incredible space. They have laid out the experience to be logical, and efficient. The artwork is amazing, and displayed so beautifully! Oh, and it was free. Amazing.

Free of Charge and right in the city center. A little bit of history is explained with art as it's medium. Hard to beat this quality of museum being free of charge. Walk in, enjoy, walk out!

Enjoyed this museum. It was free. They did ask for our passports so they can take down the numbers to add to their guests database. Very cool paintings and sculptures. We asked the guard and he said they are closed on Mondays so we went on a Sunday.

(Translated by Google) The recently inaugurated museum in its first phase has several galleries with priceless treasures of Guatemalan history. Based on the Royal Palace of the Captains, it is possible to frame the incalculable value of the pieces housed under its colonial roof. At the entrance they provide a device that describes, as a guide, the route and general appearance of the works. It is worth taking the time to tour it.

Wonderful little museum, right on the main plaza. It's free entry so totally vworth just to explore the building and get out of the sun but it also has some fascinating artifacts. Great to give context to city and understand the Maya.

😐 40qtz for foreigners, 4x more than locals at 10qtz. It’s not like we make 4x more money in other countries. Other than that a pretty little park with ruins.

👍 A stately, elegant building that used to house the government of the entire Central America until the late 18th century. It now hosts two museums one of which is free to enter.
