It is a monument that has a lot of history, because in the years of President Jorge Ubico, in this same place he had ordered the construction of a temple to the goddess Minerva of whom he was a fan. After its overthrow, the temple was destroyed and in its place this beautiful monument was built in tribute to the distinguished professor Rafael LandĂvar who was a professor at the University of San Carlos and today, there is a private university that bears his name Rafael LandĂvar

In a city of a multitude of historic sites, this one captured my interest today. The modest monument holding LandĂvar's remains was built in 1953 and is beautiful in its all white architecture. A well kept garden surrounds the memorial. You can see this for a very small fee. It moved me because of Jesuit history in Guatemala. In 1767 the Spanish king expelled all the Jesuits who were leading figures here. In his exile he wrote a poem turned to song that accurately depicted life in Mesoamerica and exile.

On Alameda Santa Lucia and 5 Poniente Street, a white building stands out, it could be made of huge marble, there is the monument dedicated to the poet Rafael Landivar y Caballero. Born on October 27, 1731, he graduated from USAC in philosophy and as an arts teacher. After the death of his father he traveled to Mexico, where he became known as a poet. Enter the company of Jesus. In 1755 he was ordained as a priest and began to write poetry in Latin. He is expelled and goes to live in Italy until his death in 1793. His other very famous one is "Rusticatio Mexicano" published in 1781 and again in 1782 in Bolognia, Italy. The entrance to this monument is through the Alameda, there is an entrance booth where entry is paid. You enter the building and find the tomb, a monument, two windows and a brief description of the poet's life. Around there are beautiful gardens, in the back there is a shed where they keep gardening tools, a well, an area with tables, where cultural and educational activities are carried out under the shade of trees. Following our walk you will find the services. sanitary. During our walk we heard marimba sounds; Following the sounds of the keyboard, we arrived at a hostel, where the marimba was practiced. A marimba teacher was teaching the marimba to a group of students. We listened to the class for a few minutes, in that same room there were books that gave the impression that it was a library. We enjoyed this ride. Upon arriving at the entrance booth we had the opportunity to speak with the person in charge and he told us that part of it belongs to the USAC and there is a part that is administered by the municipality of Antigua. That this monument was closed due to the pandemic and is now returning to normal, the gardening is part of it. I also mentioned that there are activities for schools and it is usually in October. There are other courses such as toward marimba sponsored by USAC. If we were interested we would have to visit the Saint Thomas Aquinas FB page.

It is a place with a lot of history, it is not very big, but the remains of the great LandĂvar rest there. It is a place, more for lovers of history and literature, than for common tourism.
