It's a beautiful palace complex to explore with very nice gardens. I would recommend reserving enough time for it to walk around and visit all attractions including the palace that offers a VR experience and a little gift. It was not crowded at all and hence more relaxing than Gyeongbokgung Palace.

A huge and serene palace that leads to the Secret Garden which is one of the most visited attraction in these palace compounds. Definitely recommended to purchase the Royal Palace Pass at the ticket office to the side of the entrance prior to entry as it allows access to multiple palaces and the secret garden too - a better deal than buying individual tickets!

A wonderful palace to visit when you come to Seoul. It is a lot less busy than Gyeongbokgung Palace which makes your visit to it seem a lot more personal and intimate. Whilst here you can marvel at the architecture of the palace and its surrounding buildings or take a stroll through the many gardens and paths or relax at the lake. There is so much to do in this place and I recommend you spend a minimum 2 hours here to fully appreciate it! Would love to come back here!

Changdeokgung Palace is magnificent. The palace grounds are enormous and very popular. The quiet back corners and gardens (on an early morning) were my favorite areas to visit. While often empty of crowds, they were full of beautiful color, architecture, and greenery. Changdeokgung Palace (and all five of Seoul’s Royal Palaces) is one of the largest, most beautiful historical landmarks that I’ve ever seen. If you’re able to visit Seoul, I highly recommend you dedicate a day to make your visit here. Definitely visit Irworobongdo, the famously stylized Korean folding screen located in the main hall of the palace (also known as "Painting of the Sun, Moon and the Five Peaks"). Friendly tips: -Arrive as early as you can in the day, preferably when they open, since this will significantly reduce the crowd sizes. -You’re allowed to bring backpacks and water bottles inside (which I’d recommend if it’s a hot day). -Be aware that some areas might be closed for renovation at various points. Beautiful palace with such rich history. And lots and lots to see!!! It’s amazing to think how this place was built. And all the little details that went into each piece. Nothing was too small to over look. And the secret garden tour is a must! From beautiful gardens to ponds to a little retreat area for the king. It’s such a shame that the Japanese saw fit to turn this place into a zoo. Tying to ruin it. But so glad that this place was restored once again despite Japanese efforts.

(Translated by Google) Gwanghwamun Square, the national square of Korea! It is also where the statues of Admiral Yi Sun-sin and King Sejong stand tall! A place where the spirit of our nation and the pain and sadness of the people stand still Would that sometimes be hatred, screams, and slanderous reproof? I believe in freedom Korea will last forever. Now, even if we are divided into two, we believe that there will be a day to comfort and praise each other in the near future, even if we fight, reproach, and fight muddy. Our Republic of Korea is very sick now. It hurts so much that it is very difficult to endure, but I believe I will overcome it wisely. For the 500 years of this year, the South and the North, Noron and Soron Just hurriedly and keep my vested interests The people fell into despair with tears and one breath, but the vested rights were corrupt and incompetent, and eventually the country was robbed and cut into two pieces. What is the reason why I feel unhappy that even if great men like Cho Man-sik and Kim Goo come back alive, they will not be able to resolve the current situation? Because they fall into the logic of each other's camp, Ya ignores Yeo, and Yeo unconditionally grasps Yeo, and progressive slanders conservatives as native Japanese. What kind of political reform can conservative stigmatize liberals as left wing reds? Ah, it's a control~~~ Are you saying that we haven't learned a single lesson from the past? Are you saying that there is really no one greedy politician who is selfless for the sake of the country and nation and throws himself in one body like a supergae? Although we were young, we fought for nonsense childish reasons, When we are mature, we avoid the opportunity to fight each other, and even if we fight, we will have a day to hug each other as if we were ashamed of each other and became closer together. One of the attractions of Changdeokgung Palace is its Back Garden or Secret Garden, which occupies 60% of the palace grounds. Many visitors come to the palace specifically to see this part of the palace. Unlike the visit to the palace, the entrance to the garden is always in a group and with a guide who will tell the whole story in Korean, Japanese, Chinese or English. A circular route takes visitors through the forest behind the palace in which ponds, pavilions and stone bridges have been integrated, all in perfect harmony with the environment, something characteristic of Korean landscaping. It is a quiet place, completely away from the noise of Seoul, one feels transported to another era while strolling along those places where centuries ago and walked the royalty of the country. One of the most beautiful places in the garden and perhaps in the palace is the Buyongi pond next to which rises a small pavilion used as a library.

Must visit place while in Seoul! Nestled at the foot of Mount Baegaksan in Seoul, its 57.9 ha complex seamlessly integrates with the natural landscape. Originally a secondary palace, Changdeokgung stands out for its harmonious design, embracing pungsu principles. The place showcases traditional layout principles, and its unique placement and adaptation to the terrain set it apart from conventional palace architecture. A highlight is the Secret Garden, a vast and serene rear garden. The wooden structures, stone platforms, and ornate details add to the charm of this exceptional historical site. Amazing place to walk around, you can easily find public toilets, places to buy coffee or water.

Beautiful palace! They have different hours for different seasons so make sure you check hours seasonally. If you are wearing hanbok, it's free to enter the palace. There is a secret garden you need to purchase ticket for separately and they sell out regardless of palace entrance fee, if you want to see the garden as well, I'd recommend going there earlier. They offer detailed guides in different languages and it seems as it is offered every hour.

I loved the palace! The main building is quite impressive, and the whole area is way less crowded that the famous one in downtown (Gyeongbeokung if I’m not wrong). It’s really quiet and peaceful, I recommend you don’t go there alone like I did as it is bigger than I thought and visiting alone is not so fun :)

Always like visiting palaces and this is no exception. It's one of the smaller palaces in Seoul but still quite interesting to stroll around. There's a separate section which is called the Secret Garden and there's a separate admission to that. An easy way to spend a morning or afternoon, discovering a bit about Seoul's past.

Wow! I have never heard of this place. It's almost better than the grand palace. Great palace in Seoul. A real pleasant visit. Beautiful buildings. Less crowded. I would definitely recommend here. It also has a secret garden and another royal residence next door. So three places to visit

It's an amazing place. The grandeur of the place reveals to us that the history of Korea goes beyond what we can find in books. This tourist spot is easily accessible and you can make the most of each Palace wrapped in a nostalgic environment and surrounded by nature. It's worth visiting. It's a tour for the whole family!

The Beauty of #Changdeokgung Palace 🇰🇷🍁🍂 . . . . . . . . . . [Naver Map] 서울 종로구 율곡로 99 https://naver.me/GSHt7V04 I booked the “General Admission Ticket” for Changdeokgung Palace on the website (https://www.cdg.go.kr/eng/) 6 days in advance to the preferred date. However, the online reservation for Secret Garden was fully booked quickly. 🥹 So I thought trying walk-in is our only hope! 🌳 On the date (24 October 2023), we arrived at the palace around 09.30 a.m. then went to the counter number 1 reserved ticket and also asked for Secret Garden tickets. The process was smooth and fast. This option is good for people who don’t want to spend time queuing up to get the tickets. (I saw that there are ticket machines too.) We really had a great time walking around and learning some history from the guided tour. Also the leaves were in beautiful colors and the weather was so nice.

It's a wonderful, must visit place! For me, it's much more impressive than Gyeongbokgung Palace. I suggest you to buy the combination ticket that costs ₩10.000 (around US$10,00), because give you access to all royal palaces, and endure 3 months. The place is huge, and I advise you to go just when opens or right after lunch, because there is no restaurant inside, just a coffee shop, that serves only drink's, and you can't get out once you are in.

Beautiful and traditional palace. Lots of walking and opportunities to take lots of pictures! A lot of the palace has been recreated recently but appears to have been done authentically. There's a lot of people dressed in traditional costumes and some will even take pictures with you. There's a small fee to get in. About 3.500 won.

If you are looking for a place to sight see whole in South Korea I recommend coming here. I recommend getting the pass to see all of the palaces and doing the Secret Garden Tour, the pass for all of it is only ₩10,000! They have different Secret Garden Tours at different times for different languages. Sometimes they have locals willing to tour guide for free. I personally just explored the palaces by myself so I could take my time and take pictures. Some entrances to other palaces are located inside this palace as well as the secret garden tour. The secret garden tour takes about an hour to finish and you will have to stay with the tour guide on that tour. You also will get to see some locals dressed in traditional clothing walking around.1

Very nice experience and nice introduction to Korean culture and history. The guides provide very good information. The secret garden tour is good but the garden itself is not comparable with the gardens of royal palaces in Austria, France, UK, or Egypt but still very exciting. What could be distinguishing about the secret garden is that is really is "very natural" or in harmony with the environment.

A cultural landmark that needs to be visited when in Seoul. I havent been to any of the other royal palaces in Seoul so I cant compare but we thought this place was great and not crowded (we visited a weekday in May). Ive been here before and then it was much more crowded, but even then it felt like there were plenty of space for everyone. You should probably combine this with the "Secret Garden" but unfortunately we didnt have the time. I recommend this place.

Quite a nice, large palace complex that's worth a visit if you have time. If you're not into history or culture, you're not going to miss a lot. On the day of our visit, the entrance ticket was free except for access to the Secret Garden which I did not take. The place is nice & calm to visit with nice open pavilions and courtyards but that's probably every area of the palace. I've read reviews about Secret Garden being absolutely beautiful, so if you do visit this palace, I highly recommend paying the entrance fee to the Secret Garden.

These palace grounds are among the best attractions in Seoul. In fact, there are multiple palaces on the grounds so there are lots of things to see. Beautiful architecture, lots of history and even has a secret garden which is a lovely walk. The secret garden tends to only be a guided tour at a specific time so grab tickets early before entering the grounds. Definitely worth a visit!

Definitely try to catch one of the free guided tours. Went on Tuesday morning and there was one at 10:15. It’s fairly quick but provides great insights on the architecture and history. For example, learn about the floor heating structures and ventilation designs. Didnt enter the Secret Garden as there was such a long queue. However, worth getting tickets to the adjacent Changgyeonggung Palace to walk the vast wooden garden grounds.

Changdeokgung was the second Palace built by the Joseon Dynasty. The Palace was burnt down and re-constructed several times. The current Palace was re-built during the early 17th century. It served as the seat of government until 1868, and the final resting place of the last King in 1926. The palace was famous for its rear garden (also called Secret Garden or Huwon), which served as an exclusive retreat for the royal family. The Secret Garden was kept as natural as possible and was altered by human beings when absolutely necessary. The most beautiful time to visit the garden was during the peak of the autumn foliage.

Great palace to visit and the tour of the secret garden is well worth it. English language tours seems to be on the half hour throughout the day. Also the last Wednesday of the month is a cultural day so is free entry to the palace (secret garden still requires a ticket)

must visit the secret garden. its truly tranquil and a historical home that the royalty lived in before. the recent drama rookie historian was also filmed here. you must prebook the secret garden guided tour via the website in advance.

  • 4/5 Boris 4 years ago on Google
It is a UNESCO. The garden is impressive and it is well explained. The palace was a bit of disappointment, it was just the same, no treasure, ... the garden was much better but you must purchase 2 tickets 1 for the palace and 1 for the garden. You can't enter the garden without a guide which is a pain. Do not forget on hot days to bring water, there is a shop where you can buy drinks but only 2. 1 at the palace and 1 at the garden. The garden has a beautiful view. You can take amazing pictures there and you can hardly believe you are in the middle of a city!

It is the center of Seoul, Korea's capital, and a major tourist destination. So it is a noisy square where people who always express themselves in the opinion of pleasant, angry or sad reasons. You can also have fun with various cultural events. There are also flea markets and international cultural events. On September 1, at the Gwanghwamun Square, 'National Paralympic Sports Competition promotion festival' and 'The Vietnamese Cultural Festival' were in progress. There was Vietnam's representative food experience booth (sugarcane juice, half American) booth. There was also a fashion show on the stage in front of the booth. The charismatic eyes, gait and costumes of the participating models stood out. As the weather is clear, I walk slowly down Gwanghwamun Square, It was just nice to see a lot of Koreans and foreigners coming together to enjoy cultural events and children playing in the bottom fountain. I just want to be filled with peace and tranquility.

This might be the best palace in Seoul. You have to go to the Secret Garden inside to fully experience the palace.

Worth a visit mainly the garden area, renovating one temple so was closed.

Best to visit during Spring for cherry blossoms. Nearest subway is Anguk Station leave thru exit 3. Hanbok dress rental is also just across the palace.

Beautiful palace grounds. I wish I had worn a hanbok as I think it would have enhanced my experience.

A beautiful palace with magnificent gardens. This would be my first choice of the five palaces to visit for sheer cultural magnificence of architecture.

Really nice place to visit and the palace is so big. Lots of things to learn about Korean culture and their king. There were separate houses for different purposes for king. I was searching for the place where the king used to smoke. Bad luck may be he was non smoker , so I had to go out for a smoke.

One of the historical palace and landmark in Seoul. Wonderful view, the palace area is really huge, intricately beautiful architecture. We really enjoy our time here, plenty spaces to sit and relax.

Among the palaces in Seoul this is my favorite. Its arhitecture was designed according to the land and respecting the nature and not by the architectural Confucian laws therefore more it's even interesting to explore. You will also find furniture and other traces of modernization since it was adjusted so under the first Emperor of Korea (Go Jeong).

This is one of the palaces in Seoul, not as well known but i personally prefer this place over Gyeongbukgung. It's smaller so more walkable and has a lot of flowers with it's own garden (which u need to take a tour of to get in to, as well as the other part of the palace) but the parts u can see are very different and more modern than the Royal Palace (Gyeongbukgung).

Beautiful palace. You can stroll through it for 3000 Won or take a tour to get inside the secret garden. Most of the texts are also written in english, chinese and japanese.

Gorgeous and really interesting to see some of the early 20th century additions to the palace. Well maintained and easy to navigate, also completely beautiful landscaping on the grounds especially with the fall foliage on full display. :)

The place is so so big and vast. walk until leg pain. saw senior citizens walk around without any issue. You can walk to nearby place if your stamine is good such as Hanok Village and Unhyeongung Palace. Admission is free

Incredible palace that takes you back in history, the buildings are so vibrantly coloured and there are lots to walk around (although none you can go inside, you can look in from the outside of some). Make sure that you are there early, not many people and you can have some quiet time The secret gardens are a separate ticket which must be bought but this is also a must

One of the most beautiful places in Seoul. Beautiful temples, gardens, you can join to special tour. Historical site, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It's not worth seeing.

We walked all day around the palace and did Secret gardens tour. I would say must see. Give it a day. Very touristy so I would recommend starting early. Not many eating options once you enter the grounds, bring snacks and water if you tend to get hangry 🙃

IT WAS WORTH IT! Changdeokgung Palace was just 5mins away from my Hostel Tommy & Iksadeong. Of course, if you wear Hanbok- it’s free entrance to any palaces. Secret Garden is only accessible through your guide. It was 5,000 won. (General entrance to palace ground is 3,000won). There’s a time slot- mine was 11:30am and it took 1hr30mins. It was English Tour. But I’m glad I was wearing Hanbok here than the other palace - because of the size, and Changdeokgung was smaller and bit intimate. So, it’s very easy for me to walk around and a lot of shades because of the Secret Garden. We took our time walking around and learning each spaces and area, the tour guide was really kind to entertain questions from others. There is vending machine and bathroom within the Secret Garden area. FYI, there are at least 2 times we did a little hike at the end, one was gradual incline but easy and last was climbing stairs- not so bad but for older people might be a challenge.

This palace is nicknamed "The Palace of Prospering Virtue" is one of the palaces built during the Joseon Dynasty. It is smaller than Gyeongbokgung Palace, but it has nothing to envy: impressive, beautiful, and huge. I also recommend that you do the palace gardens "secrets of gardens" which, unfortunately, are only done in group visits.@

Sweltering heat! But an amazing palace and garden complex. Secret Garden tour is worth the time and modest amount of money.

Very cool and beautiful palace. They offer a free app that gives you an audio guide through your phone which was actually really useful and entertaining. We'd wander to each place, find a shady spot to sit, and listen to the guide. It was sometimes silly but informative. The area is huge and there are so many different things to see. We came on a reallllllly hot day. There were enough shady places to sit and cool down (sort of). Still a lovely place to visit and learn a bit more about such a historical building.

  • 5/5 Sarah B. 8 months ago on Google
Beautiful old palace, the free walking tour was very informative. If you get a chance, the secret garden tour is also worth it, as you can only access this area as part of a tour. There is a small gift shop and cafe in the palace grounds as well.

Awesome step back in time. Fun with everyone wearing costumes. Make sure to buy the ticket for everything because you’re probably going to anyway. It will save the hassle.
