One
of
best
research
center
in
the
world.
Establishment
of
KDI,
the
first
think
tank
in
the
social
science
sector
In
the
early
1970s,
Korea
had
little
experience
in
establishing
scientific
economic
policies,
but
it
could
not
rely
solely
on
foreign
brains
to
establish
policies
for
a
self-reliant
economy.
Accordingly,
the
establishment
of
a
research
institute
that
would
support
the
establishment
of
economic
plans
and
policies
suited
to
our
circumstances
based
on
realistic
and
scientific
analysis
was
promoted,
and
KDI,
the
first
think
tank
in
the
social
science
sector,
was
established
in
March
1971.
KDI,
established
with
aid
funds
from
the
United
States,
started
with
twelve
economists
and
has
served
as
a
driving
force
in
Korea's
economic
and
social
development
by
presenting
logical
and
feasible
policy
alternatives
under
the
mission
of
'economic
design
toward
prosperity.'
Over
the
past
40
years,
KDI
has
contributed
to
rational
policy
establishment
and
institutional
reform
through
in-depth
research
on
the
overall
economy
and
society,
including
macroeconomics,
finance,
finance,
social
security,
labor,
industry,
trade,
competition
policy,
and
the
North
Korean
economy.
In
addition,
we
have
strengthened
our
role
according
to
the
needs
of
the
changing
times,
including
economic
education,
financial
business
evaluation
and
private
investment
support,
nurturing
next-generation
global
leaders,
and
sharing
economic
development
experiences
for
the
common
development
of
the
international
community.
KDI,
creative
production
of
new
knowledge
Our
society
is
facing
a
variety
of
challenges
due
to
rapid
changes
in
the
internal
and
external
environment.
We
need
to
go
beyond
simple
quantitative
growth
and
solve
more
multifaceted
problems
that
encompass
improving
quality
of
life,
conflict
resolution,
and
happiness.
These
structural
reform
tasks
require
a
new
theoretical
and
practical
paradigm.
KDI
seeks
to
improve
the
efficiency
of
policy
establishment
and
execution
by
seeking
‘creative
production
of
new
knowledge’
through
the
inheritance
and
development
of
high-quality
research
traditions
and
expansion
of
interdisciplinary
research.
In
addition,
we
are
doing
our
best
for
the
development
and
prosperity
of
Korean
society
by
improving
the
quality
of
policy
research
through
strengthening
global
research
cooperation.
