We have visited before but had more time this time around and made good use of the audio tour. There is an amazing amount of history and the audio guide is pretty much essential. We also paid extra to visit the Queens Diamond Jubilee Gallery (£4 I recall) but for me this was the highlight of the visit. The views are amazing and the exhibition itself is very impressive. As we had visited London by train we made use of the 2 for 1 days out scheme and got half price entry into the Abbey. Details are on most rail websites but you must print out the voucher in advance and have your return rail tickets with you.

Was an excellent place to visit! The amount of history here was well beyond what I had originally imagined. Not only are there a lot of ties to British religious history, but British history in general. There are also ties to significant scientific, art, and literary icons throughout the last several hundred years. The free audio guide with your tour was also very helpful in giving a more in-depth look at some of the statues, memorials, and other sites to see during your visit. Overall highly recommend this tour!

This was one of my favorite places to visit in London. The incredible detail for the tombs was mind blowing. Such famous people buried in one place made this a must see stop. The digital guide was immensely helpful.

The price of the tickets are worth it. Very beautiful place. The audio tour guide will explain most of the important parts of the Abbey. I will definitely go back but this time I will avail the secret tour. Avail the crowned jewel tour as well.

Before the review I have to explain something- the first time I was Westminster Abbey I was 15 and the place impressed me so much. Now 25 years later I was sure all my memories of nostalgia would disappoint me. BUT The place is awe-inspiring. British, English, religious and scientific history within such a fascinating place. We were four hours with two kids. We were just really hungry so we went out Highly recommend

Must see when in London. They are very well organized on dealing with the crowds and even though it was packed, there was no wait. They have a nice audio tour and lots of staff throughout to ask questions and help. They also had a moment of silence and offered for anyone interested to say prayers. So much history in that church.

Expect long queues to entry the Abbey! Last time a visit the place the queue for entry was too long that the expected time to get in from the last position was way above 30 minutes! However, the places is worth the wait. Most of the most relevant persons in Britain history are buried here, and you can just get a grasp of all the importance given to their memories just by visiting the place.

Beautiful church. The audio guide was very helpful in explaining things, and there is a lot to see. Gives a wonderful history of many of the tombs you see. £24 each seemed a little steep, but ended up being well worth it.

This was a beautiful visit. We got tickets ahead of time and only had to wait 10 mins to get started. We chose to do our own tour, but they give you audio devices which have added enjoyment to the trip. The architecture and environment is very beautiful and almost emotional. It is worth the ticket price.

An interesting place from which you can see most of the history of the British monarchy! A very popular place for many tourists, I even had to spend a considerable time to get inside! There is a lot of history as well as the very feeling of everything that is there inside! I was very impressed with the inner courtyard, beautiful and cozy, you don't even feel that you are in the very center of the city! I loved London!😍😍😍

We loved it, get the audio tour as you will know what you are looking at, so much history and information… everyone loved it, my husband, myself and my (11y & 8y sons).. If you are visiting London, you should go there.

Way more than you'd expect when you come in, if you're an avid reader you can be entertained for hours. Everything is beautiful and historic, not really any complaints. Their choir also sounds completely out of this world.

What a wonderful experience. The Abbey is steeped in history. There is so much to see. The architecture is truly unique and the interior of the church is magnificent... stained class windows, towering ceilings and ornate tombs. Self-guided audio tours are available. There was a queue to see the different tombs but other than that, the crowd was fairly manageable. Definitely one of the must-see attractions in London. I used a London Pass to get in so I didn't have to queue for tickets.

If you want to experience this place properly, you need to come twice. Once as a tourist or patriot or historian, and once as a christian. If you go during a service, as I did on Christmas Day, you will experience that which millions of English Christians have experienced in this house of God. You will be humbled, and awe-inspired, and hopefully leave a little closer to God than you were before. It is beautiful from the outside, and breathtaking on the inside. As a tourist or patriot, you will notice that the church also serves as a memorial, with tombs dating back over a millennia. It serves as a canvas and record of our great and good, paying homage to kings, poets, dignitaries, artists, and many other notable figures. It is impossible to take it all in during your first visit, so please take your time. I love this place. There will always be a reason to come back, and if you let it happen, you’ll come away from it a different person. A must see.

Amazing experience! Got to see the House of Commons, House of Lords etc. Photography isn’t allowed in most places inside, so do be aware of that. I recommend booking tour tickets in advance. Getting a tour guide is tough (fully booked till 2025!) but the audio tour is as good. No wait on a weekend, just need time for security checks

I learnt a great way to leave the crowds (mostly) behind and discover what is behind some of those locked doors today on the 'Hidden Highlights' tour. The guide's knowledge seemed limitless and added so much more to the visit than the standard audio tour. Highly recommended.

Amazingly beautiful ancient medieval cathedral located in the heart of London near all the best attractions. You won't want to miss this stop on your trip. Many Monarchs are buried inside. Don't leave without seeing Mary Tudor (bloody Mary), and her sister Elizabeth I. Wonderful experience and a must see feat of ancient architecture. Very well preserved.

(Translated by Google) Spectacular gothic temple full of history, a World Heritage Site. Place of coronation of kings, of royal weddings and of eternal rest of illustrious Britons. Naves with slender columns and marvelous crossings, perhaps a bit dark, despite the fact that the walls are adorned with huge and precious stained glass windows. Spacious and elegant cloister. You can also visit the upper gallery, from which there is an excellent view of the church. They do not allow taking photos. One of the essentials in London. No dejan hacer fotos. Uno de los imprescindibles de Londres.

A London must see! Lots of Royals history found here. Notable kings and queens are interred here beginning with William the Confessor. Put enough time aside to take the 1 hour tour offered rather than just the highlights tour. Tomb of the unknown soldier is found here. Kings and queens have been crowned at Westminster Abbey for their coronation ceremony and Royals have been married here too. Lots of rich history. Magnificent Gothic architecture and stained glass.

A wonderful and old building full of the tombs and monuments to some of the greats of the UK, including Edward the confessor, Henry VII and his granddaughter Elizabeth I and her rival Mary Queen of Scots. It opens at 9:30 and that's the best time to visit before lots of people fill it and make it difficult to get around and get the photos you want, especially as visiting the Abbey is expensive.

By visiting the Westminster Abbey you visit a piece of history. It’s a definite top 10 attractions in London. The entry tickets are included in the London pass but we couldn’t do it on the days we had the pass so we bought tickets to the Abbey separately. You don’t have to buy tickets if you choose to attend a prayer service. The lines are usually long at the Abbey but they do mover quickly. The audio your gives to a general Idea of the history and the map of the place. It is a self conducted tour. It’s beautiful.

A lot of intricate history, pomp and religion. But, is God really present in this church? We attended a Saturday 5pm service and there was a "choir performance" and scripture readings but did not sense the Holy Spirit's presence. Still worth a visit to see what is possible when men and women are inspired by the Lord (in the past).

Highly memorable experience. There was a variety of unique aspects one could partake in at this venue. I would highly recommend advance purchase of tickets. It was quite breathtaking to even just stand in the great hall and take in the architecture, history, and overarching significance of the entire abbey.

(Translated by Google) Even if the cost of the entrance ticket is not to be underestimated, it is unthinkable to go to London without visiting the extraordinary, famous Gothic Westminster Abbey, one of the most important buildings in British history. Already spectacular from the outside, it holds treasures of exceptional religious and cultural interest within its millenary walls (it was erected in the year 1000). Here, on the King Edward's Chair, King Edward's wooden throne, kings and queens have been seated since 1066 at the time of their coronation, here lie buried kings, writers, poets, musicians, heroes, scientists and characters who have made history of England and beyond. Given the due proportions, Westminster represents for England what the Florentine Church of Santa Croce represents for Italy.

I love how Westminster Abbey pays tribute to Martin Luther King by erecting a statue of him above the main entrance. His statue is in the center next to other famous religious leaders. This is remarkable to me because he is not British and is of another Christian faith.

1000 years of history, was great to visit this masterpiece. The audio tour guide was really well presented. Map. Timeline. Great amount of speaking on each subject. Really been mastered well. Great to see history in front and upclose too. Really is a must see for people. Price would say is high for entry, however to maintain such a delicate place won't be cheap and that's why I had to qualms in paying for it. Glad I visited, and I urge people to go aswell!

You have to be inside the church to appreciate its architectural marvel and suggest to keep at least two/three hours to fully soak the overall experience. One of the world’s most significant religious buildings with a history of more than thousand years and a place of coronation/burial site of British monarchs for many generations. Audio tour is quite helpful in understanding the rich history and important decisions taken from this church. Choral tunes inside the church make the experience serene and this place is must visit for tourists.

Pricey.. I think to charge £24 to visit something of such national importance is actually quite shocking, restricting entry to lots of people. The Audio/video tour was pretty good, but the check in point signs are not that clear. I wasn’t that impressed with the red coated ‘Abbey police’. I understand they have a job to do but being told to take my hat off in the way of being told off like a 4 year old, is unacceptable. “You are in a church” REALLY??? 😡 interesting visit but it’ll certainly be a one off!

Fascinating, stunning and vast building with many parts and so much to see. The new queens gallery above is well done and has a video of the history of the buildings forming the Abbey. It feels very ‘stately’ rather than like a holy place of worship. Poets corner is my favourite.

Nice church with good historical significance however tickets are over-priced. As a tourist, I personally much preferred St Paul’s with better value for money and experiences at St Paul’s including the climbing the dome to the highest point (whereas it’s an extra £5 (£29 total) at Westminster to climb to a lower viewing point). Finally the toilets were unsatisfactory, having only 1 fully functioning toilet available to women at the time of visiting.

The Abbey is unreal! Beautiful and well-preserved architecture. Adults pay £27 to enter and you can have a self-guided tour using headphones and a guide tablet. It's worth the time and a must see. Weekends there tend to be long lines on the outside to enter.

Definitely book your tickets in advance via their website. It removes a good amount of the waiting time to enter. The Abbey is majestic and worth the visit and I would reserve around 2 hours of your time to properly visit it. The place gets crowded so you will be bumping shoulders quite often with other visitors.

However, I suggest taking your time and actually reading and absorbing all the history of the place. As a bonus, you can also visit the jewels there, but pictures are not allowed in that part of the visit.

Westminster Abbey is a magnificent architectural marvel steeped in 700+ years of history. The Gothic masterpiece, with its intricate detailing and soaring spires, serves as a symbolic center of British monarchy and religious ceremonies. The interior is adorned with stunning stained glass, impressive chapels, and the Poets' Corner honoring literary greats. Navigating through the hallowed halls feels like a journey through time, with notable tombs and memorials paying homage to iconic figures. A visit to Westminster Abbey is an immersive experience, offering a profound glimpse into the cultural and historical tapestry of the United Kingdom. The stroll through the nave of Westminster Abbey is a captivating journey where every step is laden with historical significance. Walking on the tombstones of luminaries such as Stephen Hawking, Charles Darwin, Charles Dickens, Churchill, and Sir Isaac Newton adds a unique and thought-provoking dimension to the visit.

Beautiful from the outside, and breathtaking beyond description on the inside. It is a working church that also serves as a memorial, with some tombs dating back to 1000 AD. Magnificent in every way, every square inch is ornately decorated, paying homage to past Royals, kings and queens, poets, (including Shakespeare!), dignitaries, and many other notable figures. Difficult to describe, we spent over two hours exploring, learning, and taking oodles of pictures. Thankfully, we opted to pay a little extra to go up to the top floor, known as the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Gallery . This L-shaped room wrapped around the interior core of the abbey, offering the best place to see the true grandeur of the church. (Sadly, though, no pictures were allowed.) The gallery served as a showcase of the history of the Abbey - its architecture, people, and priceless gems. With the Abbey’s main focus of lifting up and sharing the message of Jesus Christ, you could feel the reverence and couldn’t help but be moved. What an inspirational, unforgettable experience: truly the highlight of our day. A MUST-SEE!

I bought tickets online as I was entering but you could buy them at the kiosk when entering regardless. They give you a free map and a free audioguide which really adds to the experience. They have workers stationed at regular intervals who essentially know everything there is to know about the building and the historical context. You can see the Coronation chair which is right at the very end as you leave through the main doors. What you don't see on TV is behind where the Coronation took place there is another whole section to the Abbey.

I didn't go inside of the Westminster Abbey, but walked around it and it really looked magnificent from the outside. With a history that goes back more than a thousand years really fascinated me about this glorious building. Westminster Abbey, formally titled the Collegiate Church of Saint Peter at Westminster, is a large, mainly Gothic abbey church in the City of Westminster, London, England, just to the west of the Palace of Westminster. It is one of the United Kingdom's most notable religious buildings and the traditional place of coronation and a burial site for English and, later, British monarchs. The building itself was a Benedictine monastic church until the monastery was dissolved in 1539. Between 1540 and 1556, the abbey had the status of a cathedral. Since 1560, the building is no longer an abbey or a cathedral, having instead the status of a Church of England "Royal Peculiar"—a church responsible directly to the sovereign. According to a tradition first reported by Sulcard in about 1080, a church was founded at the site (then known as Thorn Ey (Thorn Island)) in the seventh century at the time of Mellitus, a Bishop of London. Construction of the present church began in 1245 on the orders of King Henry III. Since the coronation of William the Conqueror in 1066, all coronations of English and British monarchs have occurred in Westminster Abbey. Sixteen royal weddings have occurred at the Abbey since 1100. The Abbey is the burial site of more than 3300 persons, usually of prominence in British history: at least 16 monarchs, 8 Prime Ministers, poets laureate, actors, scientists, military leaders, and the Unknown Warrior. As such, Westminster Abbey is sometimes described as "Britain's Valhalla" , after the iconic hall of the chosen heroes in Norse mythology.

I was in Westminster Abbey to take part in a service to mark the centenary of the burial of the Unknown Warrior. I felt very safe being there - social distancing was being observed, both in the way the chairs were laid out, and with personal contact. The staff with whom I had dealings were all extremely polite and helpful. It's such a beautiful building with so much history. If you're in London I would definitely recommend a visit.

The monastery was used as a cathedral for a short period between 1546 AD and 1556 AD. A Gothic masterpiece, 900-year-old coronation church of the British monarchy, and mausoleum of Britain’s kings and national heroes. Founded by King Edward the Confessor in around 1042, Westminster Abbey has witnessed the coronation of all but two of England’s monarchs (Edward V and Edward VIII) since William the Conqueror (r.1066–1087), as well as 16 royal weddings. In 1245, Edward’s Norman Romanesque church—the first of its kind in England—was demolished to make way for King Henry III’s new Gothic cathedral. Over the centuries, more chapels, including Henry VII’s spectacular Lady Chapel, were added, and the abbey’s massive west towers, designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor, were completed in 1745. National treasuresSpreading over an area of more than 105,000 square ft (9,750 square m), the abbey is architecturally exquisite and also home to an extraordinary collection of memorial sculptures and medieval wall paintings. Around 3,300 people are buried in the abbey, and many more memorialized. British monarchs from Edward the Confessor to George II lie alongside some of Britain’s most notable personages, including Charles Darwin and Isaac Newton, and those—like Jane Austen, William Shakespeare, and Charles Dickens—commemorated in Poet’s Corner.

I’ve been round the abbey many times over the years and gave to say it’s far from my favourite place in London. It’s a cavernous and gloomy building, apart from the glorious lady chapel. The abbey could go with making the visit more interesting by handing out audio guides for free like the excellent one at Hampton Court that really brings the visit to life. The abbey charges for their offering on top of the steep admission charge. The gardens a nice. Otherwise if time is short give this place a miss.

A place you have to see in London. We went to evensong on a Sunday afternoon and I'd recommend doing that as a free and peaceful way to visit. It's a spiritual experience and the music is so beautiful.

Lived in London almost 10 years and have never visited Westminster Abbey until today while a friend visits from out of town. We bought tickets that included the audio guide which was so worth it in my opinion. The small smart device you’re given is intuitive and very easy to use. Just learning the history of all of the monarchs and noteworthy people who are buried or remembered here is truly amazing. Seeing the final resting places of some very important and incredible people really makes you proud of British achievements in history. Seeing the Lady Chapel and the Nave leave you in a stunned and humble silence as you contemplate all of the feet who hand tread these floors. A real treat and thoroughly recommend for Brits and Tourists alike.

Very impressive, very important very historic cathedral, burial place of many famous British subjects whose deeds can be read about on their memorials. Some in Latin, I wish I had tried harder at school. Best to Google to see full extent of the burials . I was very impressed with the Order of Bath Chapel with its flags, and a magnificent ceiling. The tomb of the unknown soldier serves as a reminder of the futility of war. And for those interested in literature, then Poets Corner would be of great interest.

So much history here, loads to see although there are some disappointing things. Expensive (everything has to be bought separately), limited on time, certain areas are closed on different days making seeing everything in one go difficult and meaning you'd have to pay to return! You can't miss out on the history and burials there though and they know that. There's no clear indication in certain areas where people are buried (with chairs covering prime minister's tombs and only a plaque hidden away in areas) which makes finding places hard and unless you're willing to pay more for a map then you're stuck searching constantly.

From the moment you see the building you know what you are in for. The building’s beautiful architecture and towering size stirs a feeling of awe from deep inside me. The inside was no different with intricate stone and wood work that nearly assaulted the eyes with their beauty

The most incredible structure/cathedral I've ever been. Grand..history..culture...MUST SEE ...better than Sagrada familia of Barcelona and St. Steven's of Vienna or Venice...nothing measure up... it's like the Vatican. Photos or words don't give justice. £24 entrance fee.

Living within a few miles and never in my life having visited, I thought this was a good time to put this right and given how quiet it was, this proved correct. Whilst this is first and foremost a religious site of national importance, I am not sure how it copes when it is busy. The signage is sometimes hard to spot (even to find the entrance) and too many interesting tombs and the like are difficult (unless you speak Latin) to identify, some side chapels are not mentioned in the guide and not marked in any way. Given that you pay a fair sum to enter, then the church authorities need to meet their customer's needs more exactly. The nave is wonderful and the flags and ancient tombs around the Lady Chapel well worth seeing. The floor is littered with memorials and graves and it is fascinating to see who is there, and who isn’t. With the need to look up, look around and look down simultaneously, the visit can be a bit hazardous and it is easy to miss interesting items. A visit to the Queen's Galleries should be included (extra of course!) but again some of the items are not identified and remain obscure. You do get an excellent view down the cathedral however. The toilets, café (not very big) and gift shop can be visited on the way out via the cloisters. Finally, the website needs a review to remove inconsistences about ticketing and some other matters on different pages.

Great place to visit! I recommend Hidden highlights tour cost £15 but gives access to Eduard the confessor shrine room, library, coronation chair etc. Also allows access to top floor museum with great views of the Abbey. To see everything takes about 3hrs, tour alone is one hour.

Maybe 3.5 🌟 but not 4. A huge cash grab inside. They charge enough already and don't give you head phones? You need to pay extra. Incredible building and not a church but an homage to all the elites that have stolen, killed and taxed all the poor.

Coronation Church and Mausoleum. The history of the Collegiate Church of Saint Peter at Westminster, as Westminster Abbey is officially called, begins in the years 960/970, when a Benedictine monastery was founded here. Edward the Confessor had the monastery church rebuilt between 1042/1052 and 1060 into a royal burial church, where he was buried in 1066. He is the first of many kings, nobles, scientists, writers, politicians and other celebrities to be buried or interred in the church. Westminster Abby is the final resting place for some 3,300 people. Later in 1066, Harold II Godwinson is the first English king to be crowned in this church, a tradition that continues to this day. Construction of the present Gothic church begins in 1245 at the behest of Henry III, and lasts until the second half of the 14th century. Some of the most significant later additions are the Henry VII Chapel (1503-1509) and the two west towers (1722-1745). The beautiful church with a long history, its many graves of celebrities and its magnificent interior attracts an average of 1.5 million visitors every year. The entrance fee is quite high, but you definitely get value for money!

Definitely a must-see on the list of London tourist spots. The sculptures and the stained glass windows are gorgeous, but most people come for the history. The abbey is the burial place of kings and queens, scientists and artists, writers and musicians - a who’s who of the last five hundred years of British history. It’s also mostly wheelchair accessible.

Beautiful place to visit. You get an audio guide and can visit everything for 30min or 1h. At the end you get into the interior park and some other rooms. This is a must see place in London !

Extremely interesting place of worship with so much to see of historical and cultural interest. Monuments to famous people through the ages as well as royalty. Couldn't take it all in! Free audio tour is very good at pointing out highlights and one way system round the abbey works well. £25 seems expensive but we were there several hours.

Definitely ones of the must-see attractions in England. Get the audio guide and follow the one-way route. We also did the hidden highlights tour, which we thought was fascinating and definitely worth it. I would give yourself at least an hour to an hour and a half to do the Abbey itself. And another hour and a half to do the Hayden highlights tour.

Pleased that I've visited, but wouldn't necessarily go again. Too busy for me. Paid extra for the Jubilee Gallery, and I feel it was worth the extra. Enjoyed the gallery more than the main Abbey - less crowded, and some really interesting pieces. The Abbey Gardens were so peaceful.

Amazing working building/church to visit with so much history going back centuries. The self guided audio tour is worth paying for. Staff are also happy to answer your questions. Allow at least 2 hours to visit

Beautiful church! The architecture was amazing. We didn’t go in but stayed on the outside and looked around and took photos. It is also right next to Big Ben to. Overall really cool must have sightsee in London!

This HAD to be my first stop. To see Queen Elizabeth I. The reason for this whole trip. The staff were very friendly and helpful. I wanted to start at Queen Elizabeth's tomb and a staff member took me right there. I suggest getting a membership. Not only is it a wonderful way to contribute to the church but it also gets you right in the door. No waiting in line and boy was there a line. If you go twice you have paid for your membership. I saw it as a donation. When I ever go back to London I will go here again, so much history. I could never express what it felt like to walk in the footsteps of so much, SO MUCH history. I felt very privileged and humbled to just be in that space.

For those with an Anglo-Saxon background or education, this place is mind blowing! The history buried here is beyond comprehension. If you are a history buff of any kind I would recommend doing some prior research as the historical figures buried there, and in which part of the abbey they are interred as the place is absolutely full of stuff and it can be very overwhelming. 4 stars due to the excessive entry charges (which is London I guess...) Recommend you get there early or buy a skip the line ticket.

  • 5/5 Joeri A. 4 months ago on Google
Magnificent cathedral with a great history and links to the royal family. We had an audio guide that provides all the information you can wish for. Make sure to account for enough time since there is a hughe many things to see in the church. Spend the extra £5 for a visit to the second floor, where you can see one of the coronation chairs.

  • 5/5 Danielle S. 4 months ago on Google
I really enjoyed my visit to the abbey, it has some lovely stained glass windows and a very quite and respectful atmosphere. I love architecture and there was some wonderful details on the memorials. I also brought a ticket for the upstairs galleries and I highly recommend doing this as it has some really interesting bits of history up there.

I've been to dozens of historical churches, and so the price point for this one felt a bit high and I was unsure what to expect. But I do think it is worth the money! Plan to spend about an hour with a guided audio tour, and if you know anything about English history you'll hear a lot of names you'll recognize - from coronations to burials, and more. It can get very busy, so I'd aim for early morning to minimize crowds.

  • 5/5 Michael W. 3 months ago on Google New

It will exceed your expectations and ensnare your mind. Beyond comprehension of what one is capable of building. Master of all things architectural. Blessings to be present during services for all people. My heart felt peaceful and stronger afterwards.

Good spot for interesting and nice photos. We didn't buy entry tickets. We discovered taking photos of Westminster, Big Ben and London Eye from opposite riverbank much better

It is a beautiful "touristy" place to go. Get your tickets at least a day or 2 before you go because they will sell out, happen to me. Pay the extra 5 pound to get access to see down from the 2nd level. It was a great view from up there but they don't allow pictures up there but some people snuck a few here and there.
