Champaner Fort

Tourist attraction Historical place museum

👍 It's Amazing History of the place. Near Dargah is there . One think I don't like the Fort entry fees. They are only accepting Paytm which needs to improve with other UPI. Overall is good if you're planning for Pavagadh. People often mention Champaner, fort, Pavagadh, Gujarat, city, visit, historical, Good, heritage, good,

Champaner (ચાંપાનેર), formarly known as Muhammadpur, is a historical city in the state of Gujarat, in western India. It is located in Panchmahal district, 47 kilometres from the city of Vadodara. The city was briefly the capital of the Sultanate of Gujarat. It was founded by Vanraj Chavda, the most prominent king of the Chavda Dynasty, in the 8th century. He named it after the name of his friend and general Champa, also known later as Champaraj. By the later 15th century, the Khichi Chauhan Rajputs held Pavagadh fort above the town of Champaner. The young Sultan of Gujarat, Mahmud Begada, deciding to attack Champaner, started towards it with his army on 4 December 1482. After defeating the Champaner army, Mahmud captured the town and besieged Pavagadh, the well-known hill-fortress, above Champaner, where king Jayasimha had taken refuge. He captured the Pavagadh fort on 21 November 1484, after a siege of 20 months. He then spent 23 years rebuilding and embellishing Champaner, which he renamed Muhammadabad, after which he moved the capital there from Ahmedabad. In 1535, after chasing away Bahadur Shah, Humayun led 300 Mughals to scale the fort on spikes driven into rock and stonework in a remote and unguarded part of the citadel built over a precipitous hillside on Pavagadh Hill. Large heaps of gold, silver and jewels were the war bounty even though Bahadur Shah had managed to escape with a lot to Diu Champaner is today the site of the Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park, which UNESCO designated a World Heritage Site in 2004.

On 3 July 2004 Champaner Fort was included in the World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It became the first heritage site in Gujarat. It is located about 50 km from Vadodara. The nearest major center is Halol village. From Vadodara by Gujarat State Transport buses or by own vehicle can go there. A heritage fort and other structures can be seen in Champaner village. And through this village one can go to Pavagadh Hill. The beauty of both Pavagadh and Champaner blossoms in the rainy season.

No medical store, no clean toilet and no AC restaurant. Literally everything here is owned by forest department and Archaeological survey of India so there's little chance of development. The fragile economy of this town relies on pilgrims who come in thousands for the darshan of Devi Kali. The fort in Champaner town is sultanate period citadel known as Hisar i Khas.

If you are going to Pavagadh then you can stop by as it’s not too far from there. I felt the ticket price a bit expensive as there is not much to see.

Champaner is part of the Champaner Pavagadh Archaeological Park which was declared a part of UNESCO world heritage site in 2004. The place is rich with monuments that are a confluence of Islamic and Hindu architecture from the 15th and the 16th centuries – the pre-Mughal era. We got to Champaner by sunrise and were greeted by the Shahar ki Masjid resplendent in a golden light. However, a big black gate blocked us from entering its premises (we somehow managed to sneak in!). Unlike other UNESCO sites in India (which open at sunrise), the monuments at the Champaner world heritage site open only at 8 AM

this 16 century Built fort has borne many fights and wars. From Mughals to Maratha all of them tried to Capture\Re-Capture it. The structures represent a perfect blend of Hindu-Muslim architecture, mainly in the Great Mosque (Jami Masjid), which was a model for later mosque architecture in India. This special style comes from the significant period of regional sultanates.

A good historical place and well managed by gujarat tourism, just have one suggestion to management is that fees to visit a fort is very expensive, a middle class family will not afford that much amount.

It's a majestic fort, part of Champaner Unesco world heritage site. Built in fusion of Hindu and Islamic architecture in 15th century, many of the beautiful mosques are still intact although not used. Fort walls span over a huge area, opposite to Pavagarh hill

A Rectangular big land fort is having good fortification, bastions, gates and many ruins. Jami Masjid, Shaher Masjid, Kevada Mosque, Nagina Mosque, Temple, mosque etc. is the very famous. Habitation inside the fort. The name Champaner is derived from Champa, who was either a Vania or a Kanbi. He established this city during the rule of Vanraj Chavda of Anhilwad Patan (from 746 to 806 AD). In the 11 th century, Ram Gaur Tuar ruled, and Champaner was under the Anhilwad until 1297 or so when they were defeated by Alauddin Khalji, who made it their stronghold. During this period, the Chauhan Rajput had also settled in Champaner.
