The Citadelle always bring tears to my eyes. Reminds me with the right leader we can accomplish so much. But it also shows our lack of training for leadership and dedication to making Haiti our priority. This is my 5th visit and I can probably visit another 5 more times. BTW, don't walk up or down, just pay the $10.00 for the donkey! Enjoy the Citadelle Laferriere...

It's amazing to see how our ancestor build such building without having all the technology we have today. Everything is well preserved

The 4 mile hike up is definitely worth it to learn about this historic fortress the Haitians built by hand to guard their land!! The scenes are beautiful from 3000 ft above sea level!! The hike isn't easy but I promise it's worth every drop of sweat!!

It's mind blowing how Roi Henry Christophe and co. pulled that off. The architecture is out of this world. Every single spot is a piece of art, it's like walking through a Van Gogh gallery. I'd suggest to the trip all the way up there by walk at least once, it hits different.

The walk is a bit long so I road a horse up the hill. The experience was unreal. How in the world was this world wonder built?

The biggest monument in Haiti, built by King Henry Christophe, in the 19th century. It's so amazing, wonderful, incredible, magic. There's no complete word to describe it. People always ask a lot of questions about it, like: how did the build it? How did they get the top of this high mountain with water, materials? How many men did this? Who was the engineer? Who was the architect? Where did they study before? That's so great.. so if you are in the North of Haiti, come to Milot, in jump up to the Citadelle Laferrière.

It was an amazing experience! Since my childhood, I have seen several educational and other institutions organize tourist outings to the Citadelle Lafferiere. Unfortunately I never had the opportunity to participate. People come from all over the world to visit this marvelous site dubbed the 8th wonder of the world. Becoming older, I made the decision to go there at the next opportunity that I find. And I did! It's incredible when you imagine how this fort was built in the middle of the 19th century on top of a mountain! Amazing. I hope to go back again to continue admiring this incredible construction. You who have not yet gone, only your eyes will be able to make you understand what I am talking about.

(Translated by Google) Carrying out such a construction by force of arms at such a time in order to counter a possible return of the French colonizers is quite simply brilliant on the part of King Henri Christophe. This building testifies to the vision and the dream of making this young nation at the time, one of the largest in the area. It is an immense cultural and historical heritage. (Original) Réaliser une pareille construction par la force des bras à pareille époque dans le souci de contrer un eventuel retour des colonisateurs français est tout simplement génial de la part du Roi Henri Christophe. A beautiful historical place in Haiti. The people and land are just beautiful. You can feel yourself going back in time. We had to take horses up to the Citedal. You can also choose to take the motor bikes to go up. My horse ended up being old and had a hard time making the last of the climb. The people bombard you in trying to sell you trinkets and souvenirs, which I would have bought it I had the money. There were so many beautiful artistic stuff there. The locals also preferred American money and many spoke English. They like to hustle do just be careful when it comes to negotiating prices.

This is one of the best places to visit in Haiti. The view alone from the Citadel is amazing. Truely breathtaking. Though getting up there was an adventure in itself, it was so worth it! There are parts of the place that is dangerous to enter of course. (It was built in the 1800s.) But we still got a very thorough tour of the Citadel and have lots of memories and pictures to last us a lifetime. Loved it here! Highly recommend!!

Wonderful place. Beautiful landscape. You can walk, it's a good hike. If you want to take a horse it's 2000 gourdes almost 15$ US (round trip). Then you have to pay 10$ US to visit inside the Citadelle. And we had a tourist guide it was 20$ US/ pers (that includes the tour of the Palais sans souci ). People from the village keep soliciting to sell souvenirs etc...so be prepared...

I went to Citadel twice. Great for everyone, especially if you're Haitian decent. You will learn a lot. I do suggest walking all the way up. Take the motorcycle or truck halfway. Then the horseback. TRUST ME!!! You can thank me later.

It's a long drive to get there and the road is rough. When we got there the nice guide told us it would be a 10 mn walk to the falls. It wasn't... It's quite a walk and it's very slippery so you need to bring the appropriate footwear and your sense of adventure. Once we got there we found out that the drive and the trek were worth it. IT. IS. BEAUTIFUL. the only downside was that it rained the night before so the water wasn't blue. But we had a great time!!

Difficult to get to but worth it in the end. Things to note: difficult to find on your own especially if you do not speak French or Creole; terrible roads; asking for directions is useless, you actually need to get a local person to show you the way and expect to pay for the service; Consider doing a Tour to Basin Blue instead; You will need a guide, arrange price before you begin the journey to the falls; wear comfortable shoes with good grip; you will be crossing water

An anticolonial fortress, now the symbol of the independent nation of Haiti. In 1791, African slaves on the West Indian island of Haiti rose in revolt against their French colonial masters. The French sent a substantial force of soldiers in 1802 to retake the island, but most died of fever. On January 1, 1804, Jean-Jacques Dessalines, leader of the revolution, proclaimed Haiti independent. Built to impress. Fearing a renewed attack by the French, General Henri Christophe (1767–1820), in charge of northern Haiti, ordered the construction of a huge fortress. Work began in 1805 and continued until 1820. The foundation stones were laid directly into the mountain stone, held in place by a mortar of quicklime, molasses, local cows’ and goats’ blood, and cows’ hooves cooked to a glue. Cisterns and storehouses were also built to supply enough water and food for 5,000 defenders for 1 year.

A natural beauty! If you ever visit Haiti this a a place you must see! The fresh air, history and the view you will not get no where else! A+ totally recommend visiting La Citadelle! Be prepared for the horse ride to the top and bring water if you need to… Before the horse ride there is people selling stuff and might try heavy to convince to buy but no harm and you need to understand this place doesn’t receive alot of tourist yearly so support the locals however you can! It makes it the perfect destination since one one likes going to a place everybody has been to! there is locals selling water once you reach the top… Tip your horse helper since they take that route many times per day and it can get exhausting for them! Enjoy Haití!

CITADELLE, MW RENMEN'W ❤️🇭🇹 It was great, had a good time with friends learning more about my country's history through such a beautiful site. One more thing, The walk, ladies and gentlemen, prepare yourself for a good sporting day if you don't work out regurlarly hahaaaa 5 Gold Tips to enjoy this adventure: 1. Don't drink too much water on the way. 2. Don't walk too fast. 3. Bring a speaker with your favorite songs makes you forget about the fatigue from the walk! 4. There's this little fountain halfway to the parking, ask for it so you can freshen up a bit if you want to. 4. Lastly, take your time to enjoy the scenery/music provided by locals halfway to the Citadelle!

This fort was a breath taken. I cannot belive for a monument that was built in 1806 with animal blood, sands and lime, and yet still standing.

  • 5/5 Cedrick B. 1 year ago on Google
Go up on foot or by horse. But it's one heck of climb. The angle of climb, if not used to it will tire you out quickly. So going slow is best. Horses carry you up and back down. Your money is the limit.

The Citadelle Laferrière is a very fantastic historical monument in Haiti, it is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Haiti. Every year, thousands of people came from many different countries to visit it. I was very excited the first time I visited.
