We bought yearly passes for our family to the dockyard in 2019, before the pandemic and loved to visit - the only nag being that the Mary Rose Museum was not included. We renewed recently, now its easier to visit attractions again and were delighted to find out that it was now part of our annual membership. I cannot express adequately in words how wonderful this museum is. You enter initially into an interactive chamber, with narration from a very familiar and famous voice. You get to meet Henry VIII himself and experience the Mary Rose sinking. Getting to see the ship itself is amazing; it's at the centre of the building and you work your way around it, through different displays and floors. You catch glimpses of it, as its kept in relative darkness until they suddenly bring the lights up and you get an idea of the scale of it. They have a hologram display which beams video of actors, portraying different members of the crew going about their business, directly onto the ship - which our kids loved. On the very top floor, you can finally go into the actual chamber itself (through an airlock, which the kids were delighted with). It's really eerie and ethereal experience. We visited during half term and the kids were invited to take part in special activities offered by the museum and made their own clay ships tiles. There are also interactive activities dotted about the building for the younger visitors to try. It's BRILLIANT, we will be back.

As part of the historic dockyard experience, this is a must see! Now it's dry you can see everything that's left of it. It's presented very well in a room with ever changing lighting and video projections in certain areas. Walking around the outside on 3 different levels correlate with the items found on the levels of the boat. The staff are friendly and happy to answer any questions you may have. There is seating available on all levels, and a lift either end of the viewing galleries. Allow minimum of 2 hours. There is loads to see and read. I found it a truly amazing experience. Highly recommended. Will surly revisit.

Amazing interactive museum, very well laid out and the artefacts are just fabulous. It’s very tasteful in its preservation of the souls which we’re found on board and their possessions. If you get a chance to go, then do, expect to be in the museum for a couple of hours and do look around the gift shop. The Mary Rose Trust is a charity and relies on sales and donations.

Fantastic place. I didn't realise the Mary Rose was so big. The team at the museum have done a great job of preserving the ship, and displaying it. Also a great job of displaying all the artifacts. Very informative.

It was quite an informative and entertaining visit, learning all about what might have caused the ship to sink so quickly with so much loss of life - only 35 survived. Also, the focus was on how the ship was found, then raised, salvaged and preserved. The ship and the people who lived and worked on board was brought to life by the digital reenactments - it was amazing.

Great place, full of history, the staff was absolutely lovely and everything is flawless. Lots of things to see and I strongly advise everyone to get the Ultimate pass tickets because you can come back any time during the year and you don’t have to pay again, plus it allows you to see everything in there. I would definitely come back after the HMS Victory is going to be restored. There is a car park nearby.

Visited over the weekend and by far my most fascinating museum visit. Visiting The Mary Rose is an experience itself. The museum tour is laid out so well you'd get a full understanding of what life was like for the soldiers aboard this ship in the 15th century. Artifacts and items on display are all very well preserved. I won't upload a ton of photos on here as most reviewers already did but I will instead upload one of my favorite items on display - Hatch the Mary Rose dog. This museum would allow you to time travel. Surely visitors of all ages will appreciate the work done to create this state of the art time capsule.

We marked out the Mary Rose Museum as our single attractions on the tickets we bought. There was a large group of us and this seemed the best bet to cater for adults and children. We chose well and the Mary Rose did not disappoint. The attraction is well run with friendly and engaging staff. They did well fielding the questions from both young and old minds and really helped ignite passion and wonder for this bit of history. The exhibits are a marvel and seeing the possessions gives you a small glimpse into what life aboard one of these ships may have entailed. The ship itself is something else. On the one hand it is a sizeable vessel but in comparison to modern ships feels surprisingly small. It may have been diminutive but no less formidable for it. The cannon display was fantastic with the kids being able to get involved and again added amazement as to how it all would have worked on board. Life as a sailer/soldier would have been very tough indeed. There is so much information here that you could easily while away hours losing yourself in rich tapestry of history. While younger kids will tire of walking around at some point, older kids and adults will love what is on offer.

Superb museum, which displays the ship "upright", when I last saw it, it was as recovered (ie on its side). Fairly dark but the lights do change to accentuate different aspects of the ship. The artifacts are very interesting and well displayed. A most excellent museum.

Absolutely fantastic museum with a very understandable haunting feel to it. The displays are really cleverly done. So much information and so many artifacts. Warning: there are many skeletal remains on display. The coffee and muffins in the cafe were excellent.

We visited for my husband's 40th birthday treat. It was a lovely museum, very interesting, so much to see..nice pace to walk around. For those who struggle with walking and standing long periods of time like my husband and myself, they had a lot of sitting places and you could carry alittle stool around with you.

An incredible place to see a salvaged remains of an incredible Tudor ship. So much to learn and see here - what an amazing effort by the divers, historians and people who actually made this museum happen!

Wow! What a fantastic piece of history. From the start of trying to find it, to what was uncovered, to raising the remains of the ship, just amazing! I loved this display and what they found, and seeing the ship, as well as the videos at the start, and the 4D movie at the end. Wonderful!

This museum is highly recommended for a visit. I spent several hours exploring the exhibits. All of the artifacts in the museum were recovered from the seabed, and there are no replicas.

The Mary Rose: This museum is probably one of the most impressive museums I have ever been to, as you go through the museum you learn about the Mary Rose and what happened to it whilst also coming across the Mary Rose itself, a true feat of engineering and science to keep what remains of the ship fresh and alive. You could easily spend a full day in this museum. It's huge, and very modern and technologically advanced.

A stunning museum. It's the best museum I have ever been to. Everything is really interesting designed. You learn a lot about the story of the Mary Rose and the lifting of it. I highly recommend a visit to this great museum.

It's the first time that I have seen the Mary Rose since it was raised in the yellow frame, so it was poignant trip - the museum, artifacts and the ship itself are amazing to see and a must to visit!. Something for everyone and interactive screens as well - going to go back soon as we didn't get time to do the dive experience onsite too :-)

Very good experience. We will certainly be back to see the other attractions. Choose one experience as we were little on time. The virtual experience was very good. Small element could be that you make it 5D and provide smells and feels of being at sea. However, the projection of real life characters on the boat was brilliant. The exhibition was very informative and really interesting. Staff were engaging and the gentlemen that was organising the queue was very efficient. We will be back and would recommend people to visit but take whole day as loads to do.

This was my second visit, I absolutely love this museum. I have an obsession with the Tudor period, plus I do remember watching the Mary Rose being lifted from the sea back in 1982. On see the Mary Rose in the flesh so to speak is absolutely awe inspiring, she is magnificent. We are very lucky to be able to view this fantastic piece of history. Other artefact’s that were also excavated from the sea bed are equally amazing and on display throughout the various levels of the museum. The only downside was on entering the museum we had to wait with a large group of strangers for a pre- museum show. Would be better if this was optional as this sort of thing is not for me. I did not enjoy being crammed into a corridor with a group of people. My first visit a few years ago we could just enter the museum. Apart from this I would highly recommend a visit, the preservation work that has been undertaken is outstanding.

There is so much to see here, and the way it has been set up is exceptional. This is an actual experience, not just a display or anything like that, and best of all for me is it is very easily accessible throughout with level surfaces throughout and large lifts to the different levels. If you are disabled and going with a carer, make sure you state this at the till as carer's get free entry when with you.

We paid extra for the private tour. Its £15.00 per person but it was absolutely fantastic. Gareth ,our guide, was very knowledgeable and took us to parts of the museum that you don't get to see with a normal ticket. It lasted 2 hours. We had time afterwards to see anything we had missed. It's a fantastic museum, the displays are beautiful and the cakes and coffee are good too.

Well laid out trip through history. As an archer, I enjoyed the information about the archers of the time....very impressed by their stash of longbows. When you finally get into the airlock with the Mary Rose, the smell of wood is heady.

Fantastic museum! Photos don't do it justice. If you love your history, you'll love The Mary Rose. Expert staff will guide you along as you explore the skeleton of a Royal warship and soak up the atmosphere. Then there's the the crew of the Mary Rose themselves and the stories they tell. Can't recommend enough. Set aside a few hours though: lots to see.

I loved this place, this was the first time I've seen the Mary Rose dried out!!!! It's an amazing experience, you can see her and the many artifacts recovered on different levels of the museum it is really well laid out, be aware it will be low light because of the ship and no flash photography is allowed, also I would do this museum first it is the furthest away from the entrance but nice to go round before it gets busy

There have been massive changes to this museum since I last visited many years ago. As well as the shipwreck, there are hundreds of artifacts found on the seabed. It not only tells the story of the ship itself but also of how it was found and brought to the surface. Fascinating.

We went to the dockyard as a birthday treat (without our children for a change) to view the Mary Rose. Upon arrival we were offered a private tour and readily agreed. We met Barry, who was absolutely wonderful. Throughout our tour Barry highlighted the pieces which in his own words “are important to us, but you might miss them on your way round on your own”, and he didn’t disappoint. For only £15 a head, we enjoyed an incredible tour and received exceptional value for money. Barry was happy to keep talking and sharing his knowledge with us and we were all too eager to hear. It was a truly wonderful experience and we felt blessed to have had the experience.

We decided to purchase the ultimate experience ticket whilst visiting the Historical Dockyard site, both of us were keen to visit the Mary Rose museum site, as children we remember the raising of the vessel on TV radically live back then 😀 We have spent 2 hours inside the exhibition halls and I must say it's a truly amazing experience well worth visiting probably more than once. Covers every aspect extensively well from the scientific investigations of how and why down to the breed of the ships dog and everything in-between. As I say we booked the ultimate experience tickets in advance priced at £39 each which give access to 10 attractions in the dockyard, we didn't want to rush around and are in Portsmouth for a number of days so can make use of that ticket however I would advise if you've only the one day you won't fit it all in as the Mary Rose museum will at least a 3rd of the day depending on how interested you are in the once mighty ship

I have been a few times over the years & I am always impressed by the history inspired by the Mary Rose. There are lots of exhibits to look at as well as the wreck itself. I noticed lots of children enjoying the interactive exhibits. We had lunch in one of the on-site restaurants and the soup was very tasty.

  • 5/5 Jamie S. 2 years ago on Google
Not only are the staff incredibly friendly and very knowledgeable but the theming and the general Atmos of the whole museum was incredible. Although some artifacts have little to know accompanying information, all of the 6 galleries at either end of the Mary rose are rammed with activities and information about the functioning and the Tudor history of the Mary rose, would 100 percent recommend as a family day out.

What a fab museum, the end result of years of hard work by a huge team. We really enjoyed the emersive experience, what a truly breath taking piece of history. This is a must visit attraction.

Excellent venue for a day trip with lots to see. We visited on a day when there were a low number of other visitors which made for a pleasant tour of HMS Victory and the Mary Rose. Both were excellent with the free audio guide for Victory particularly good. Portsmouth Harbour Station is only a few minutes walk away. We purchased a ticket valid for 12 months so will be back to see the rest of the attractions.

A-ma-zing!!! Such a well thought out museum. We were all kept busy for a couple of hours, with many interactive activities, keeping both adult and children busy. The themes surrounding the origins of some of the crew is impressive, and the ship itself, the preservation and seeing it, was wow!! One point, made by a child, "what was the history of the Mary Rose before it sunk? What and where did it travel?" Good point made. #MaryRoseMuseum

A 6 star rating. This has the most amazing shipwreck rescued from the sea. Every detail is well presented with a magnificent 4D experience of how they pulled the ship from the bottom of the sea.

We stayed approximately 4 hours in this museum. It was really amazing to see all the artifacts. We took the one attraction ticket for the Mary Rose as I had seen the Victory a long time ago. I see you can buy an all year ticket and I would have bought that if I would still live in the UK. I would recommend you take a day for each attraction. We would have stayed longer if I had discovered the multi storey car park before. The great thing about this museum is they have experts there explaining things. I think that made it more interesting for the children. You could also try a long bow. WOW.

A most incredible experience ever for an exhibition here in the UK. It's a 4D experience, well worth a look. In fact you will need to allow ample time to experience everything. Highly recommended, it's exceptional.

Really amazing!! I loved all the details about the people that were recovered. Also really enjoyed the 4d experience of the excavation, that was beautifully done. I just wish they had replica pocket sundials in the gift shop, lots of the crew had them and I would have bought that as a souvenir.

Scene Set : Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. Entrance fee seems expensive but worth every penny. The ‘finished article (2016) Mary Rose Museum is truly EPIC. Bucket list status. Very friendly and helpful staff. Allow at least 2 hours and avoid busy periods accepting school/college trip visits. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.

We came down for a 3 day break and this was day 2! We looked around, went on everything we could. But the Mary Rose was incredible, the history behind it, everything about it had you drawn in to see and learn more. Highly recommended for all. Kids, teenagers, adults x

Fantastic museum.. everyone should go. It gives a great insight not only to the ship but also to the people and their lives at the time. The staff were excellent and helpful, especially a couple of guys that were wandering around explaining things with great knowledge and enthusiasm

Last time I came here I was a kid and it was still being constantly spayed to preserve. To see it now that it doesn't need it due to treatment is great. The story behind it is amazing including the raising and preservation.

Incredible museum a must visit if you don’t have the Ultimate Explore ticket for the Historic Dockyards and are trying to decide which attraction/s to see 😉 Over 3 levels you get a Fantastic view of what remains of the Mary Rose, the ‘top deck’ entered via an air lock lets you take photos without glass in between 👍🏻. As well as the boat herself you can view a large amount of recovered relics and remains of the sailors lost when she went down and amazing details about them…absolutely fascinating. There’s also a great 4D experience at the end, well worth a little wait at busier times, which goes through the history of recovering her. If it is busy you can go back at a quieter time and ask a member of staff to show you ‘the back route’ so you don’t need to navigate the whole museum again. There’s a large gift shop, of course, selling a wide range of souvenirs and gifts…some seemed reasonably priced and some seemed somewhat overpriced, in my opinion…a mug was in the sale for £20, reduced from £25 when I was there 😱 Also a cafe just off the gift shop selling all the usual fare…didn’t try it so can’t comment on quality.

Great attraction. Very interesting exhibits well laid out. Amazing to think how old it is. The ship itself is so interesting to look at. You see something different every floor you go up.

Fascinating place. Well presented and extremely interesting. A chance to see Henry VIII flagship as well as a large selection of items that you can imagine the crew used and clothes they wore. There were plenty of guides on hand to answer any questions and they certainly knew all the answers. Make sure you pick up and smell the piece of rope on the artifacts table. You can still smell the pitch that was used to waterproof the rope after over 450 years of being below the sea!!

  • 4/5 James V. 1 year ago on Google
Lovely place to visit, lots to read and see. The exhibits are very detailed and probably takes about an hour to get round it all. The new building is very impressive, and it’s obvious they are doing a lot to preserve the ship. It used to be worth the visit when the ticket price was included in the dockyard ticket but now it’s separate I’m not so sure.
