I lived across from this hostel and it has been an extreme headache, to say the least. Constant screaming, swearing and smoking at all hours of the day. The smoking would not have been a big deal, but the smell of weed was pretty routine if I opened a window. Additionally, I would listening to constant coughing/hacking and spitting. Most of the time people were spitting on their own porch, which I found a little unsettling throughout COVID. From the reviews it's clear this place was once a decent hostel for international travels, but from what i've witnessed the past year you could not pay me enough to spend the night there.

I used to live right across this hostel for a little over a year and I constantly heard very loud excessive coughing, spitting, swearing and music from what I assume are guests from this hostel. I would never recommend anybody to stay here if they allow such obnoxious behaviour at all hours of the day. I can only imagine what it’s like inside the building.

Outrageous! Mice in the kitchen and in the corridors. Receptionist when the time expires on last day says "Get out, out" and he will also oblige to pay a fee for no reason. Absolutely disrecommend this hostel !

In 2019, I spent the first two nights of a 2 week backpacking trip here. I remember I almost didn't get a bed because of a miscommunication error between the staff member I spoke to on the phone when I called prior to my trip, and the staff member working the front desk when I arrived; it all worked out in the end, thank god. Being my first time staying at a hostel, I was a little nervous, as I heard negative stories; however the staff and fellow travelers staying there were all super friendly and gave me a warm welcome to the east coast. 😊

Very friendly staff, beautiful and clean place. The location is amazing, lots of restaurants, the western bus station is about 5 min walk from there. The dining area is big and comfy, the kitchen is big, you can make anything here. I totally recommend this place and if in the future I'm going to need a hostel I will definitely combe back here.

Nice and clean hostel with comfy and well equipped kitchen. No free breakfast, but when I visited there were free baked goods in the kitchen every afternoon. The staff is nice and the location perfect to explore the city.

Location is good. Share bathroom is ok. I stayed in the female dorm in basement and there is a musty smell. Air circulation is not good.

Great central location and affordable beds with easy access to grocery, alcohol, restaurants, bars, pubs, clubs, shopping and tourist hot spots. Staff were very friendly and with lots of helpful tips about were to go and what to do !! Bearley's House of Blues & Ribs is right next door to hostile and has live music on most nights with comedy/karaoke on Wednesdays. Drink specials and cheap on tap beer along with great food make this popular spot a great place to meet new friends and for a night out till they kick you out !! They also have a pool table in the back room but you will have to wait since it is usually being used.

I stayed at the Hi hostel in halifax for 2 weeks and it was the worst hostel experience out of all the Hi hostels.The staff was extremely ignorant rude and very disrespectful. They were very prejiduce and i was racial profiled . I was constatntly being harrassed and my personal belongings were violated by the staff . Ive been really traumatized by this experience and would not recommend this place to stay for anyone of a minority background . The staff needs better customer service trainning , a lot more work on their people skills and more diversity ... I was rediculed and belittled infront of guest in the establishment . Neverthless the staff is very unprofessional and extremely immature . You would think that for people working in the service industry that they would be more compationate , open minded and copacetic.

A private room...dead bugs and the ladt guests hair everywhere..sweepng berween guests was too much to ask these folks filthy!!! Decrepit and shameful they sell theae rooms. Not to mention a surpirse 5$ CASH deposit for a key that found me driving all over looking for an atm before i could even brung in my bag. They had my room fee however

The dorm room they put me up in was in the attic and it was sweltering: all four of us in there suffered last night - even with the space fan units it was 20° hotter (F) than outside... and I was suffering with my neuropathy and popping nitroglycerin tabs off and on all day/night.Finally at 2:15am I couldn’t take it anymore and had to get out of there: I was having difficulty breathing in the stifling air and started to get heart fluttering/palpitations so I needed to use my emergency funds to check into a hotel with A/C (before I ended up needing a hospital). The staff and guests were all great, my bunk bed cot was comfortable and I had clean bedding & towel, and the building itself is pretty cool - if it just wasn’t so hot and humid I’m sure I’d have been fine. I just don’t think you should stay here if the weather is too warm and extreme heat is bad for your health.

North America is NOT big on hostelling as a way of traveling cheaply: in most European cities you can find wonderful places to stay for typically under $30, in any major city. That said, this place DOES try very hard to please, and they succeed!! It's not cheap by comparison to Europe, but by local standards... yes. Wonderful staff: they are the BEST!! Kitchen is shared and a great place to meet folks from all over, who are passing through. Cozy common room as well: for an affordable, friendly and different lodging experience, this place definitely has it!! Wonderful location also: very close to the downtown core, almost on top of the waterfront, and a short walk from Point Pleasant Park and the bus and train station.

They have MICE and SPIDERS in this hostel. There was no window curtain in my room. Therefore no privacy. No air conditioning. However, the staff are professional and friendly. Washrooms and rooms are clean. They are ready to help you. There is no staff during the night from 11 pm to 8 am for the moment. Good location in the city of Halifax. However, I do not recommend this hostel because of MICE. I do encourage them to do something about the MICE.

The dining area was clean and bright. The dorms and washrooms were clean and the staff was nice and helpful. However, I wouldn't recommend it to everyone. Some of the building was... gross. I realize it is an old house but there were mice in the livingroom, the tiles in the kitchen were peeling off, it was dark, etc. Just keep those things in mind when deciding to stay here or not.

Had a terrific experience, found a groovy gremlin. Super comfortable toilet seats, I absolutely loved them, quite shiny amd perfectly cleaned, I could almost see my reflection! My favorite part of my day was using the washroom because of this. 10/10 would stay again. P.S. the people are groovy

Booked 2 beds in a 6 person dorm, had a great time! The staff were very friendly and quick to give cool pointers on things to see. The place itself has a very unique vibe that is very cool. I guess I can understand what the other reviews were saying that it might get a bit hot in the summer, but becuase my buddy and I were there in late september it wasn't an issue at all! Really good time

Staying here for the weekend for a trade show. Everything is pretty clean and quiet, the beds aren't particularly comfortable but the kitchen is very nice. The staff are super polite and all the interactions I've had with them have been really nice.

People staying here were cool, I wasn’t staying but as I have a few friends who worked there, they let us chill in the lounge area. VFS tapes were a throwback. It’s 50/50 with the staff, some are super interesting and nice, some are a bit extra for me.

They have Mice in this hostel. They also have spiders. No breakfast. No air conditioning. No fan to make it cool. The staff is friendly, cool and respectful. However, they told me that they can not do anything about mice. Therefore they set up traps in the kitchen near the heaters. Be ready to pay an extra 5$ only cash for your keys security fee deposit. I had no curtains in my private room. Therefore people could see everything happening in my room from outside. No privacy. However, the bathrooms are well cleaned. There is no staff 24 hrs / 24 hrs. Females guest be very careful if you stay in this hostel. Make sure you stay safe from 11 pm to 7 am. Because there is no staff and it is very dark. Finally I do not recommend this hostel and I won't come back there anymore. I hope they will move the hostel to another building free of MICE !

Great downtown hostel!

This is my second stay...and won't be my last. The staff are the bomb! The place is super clean and walking distance to a lot of stuff in downtown Halifax. I tip my hat to them!

Not the best quality stay but I met lovely helpful volunteers here so I still appreciated the stay.

Lovely place...Wanted to experience the hostel life and was very happy.Met new people from differnt countries also made some friends....Rooms r good..Wifi good....Neat n clean kitchen to make ur own food...next to the Atlantic Superstore ...close proximity to the Harbourfront and downtown...Also close to Universities n colleges.....Friendly atmosphere n staff very co operative...would deftnly recommend backpackers for ths place...also chk before u travel to hostel regarding buses which takes u straight to the hostel n 3.5 dollars.....Overall amazing experience......Thanks..
