The photos of this hostel are entirely deceiving. When comparing with my stay, I had to question if I was on the right website when looking at the business’ photos -I didn’t recognize them. The place is in need of a renovation, is old , creaky and in an unsafe area of town. Every Uber driver gave me a warning when I was getting dropped off here. It gets good ratings for location due to its proximity to downtown. As a woman staying there on my own I did not feel safe. The staff keep it clean and are friendly, but be aware it is not as depicted.

Price is decent, location is pretty amazing. It's right in the edge of everything happening downtown if that's where u wanna be. Seasoned travelers seem to be very happy with it

Spent my time here as a fledgling entrepreneur for the Craft East Buyer's Expo. As hostles come, this one is clean, comfy, and has excellent caretakers that you can chat with or ask any questions to. Below the hostle is a small cafe with good bitter bean juice, and tasty treats. Make friends, and you might be able to nab a freshly baked cookie from the friendly barista. :9

Oh.. I love that place for real with all of it's employees . I must admit that I never expected a backpackers hostel this nifty , clean and cozy with a bunch of wonderful friendly guys to meet over there , as well! I would honestly like to suggest anyone looking for a budget place to stay in... You must check it out ! Cheers 🤗🤗🤗

This is my second time staying here. Loved every second of it - staff are all super friendly (especially Amy) and the location is perfect (ten minute walk to Downtown). Cafe downstairs is a great place to grab cheap food/drink. The rooms are simple yet nice; to be expected from the cheapest place to stay in Halifax!

Was denied room even though I have a negative PCR test result from within the last 72 hours. Those in less fortunate circumstances deserve to still have access to a room when it is cold and wet outside.

Staff was very friendly, great little cafe! Cheap! But room was unbelievably hot (upstairs) with only one non-rotating fan. Not super clean, in need of some maintenance in general.Neighbourhood wasn’t great for solo female walking at night.

They don't except anyone from north America. I ended up without a house that night as they wouldn't take me in, I got beat up by a gang outside and everything stolen, was in the hospital a week while left for dead. DO NOT GO TO THIS DUMP!

The hostel is clean, properly maintained with courteous staff. Also the weekend nights are good at their alter ego cafe. I had stayed at a few Airbnb places, but found this is better than those. If you are young at heart and want to explore Halifax, it's a good place to stay.

I stayed here for a week and had a blast. It's easy to get to anywhere you might want to go from the hostel, and I met loads of awesome people while I was there. The cafe downstairs does great coffee at a reasonable price. Kitchen well organised and everything works. Hot showers. I'd absolutely go back any time!

Absolutely incredible place, with wonderful people and an incredible staff. I met new friends, visited the lovely neighborhood, cooked some nice meals and talked with more people than I can count. Prefer this to soulless hotels in any situation. For couples, the double bed bedroom is cozy and comfortable. Do visit Fortune Donut and The Local just next door.

Such a great hostel. The staff are very nice and helpful and address you by name. In the evenings there are lots of activities, like pizza parties or trivia. It's a great way to socialise with the other guests and spend time in a wonderful community. I spent wonderful days here where I felt completely comfortable and everything was just right.

I stayed here for 2 nights and enjoyed my time. The only problem was the squeaky bunk bed. Otherwise, friendly and welcoming staff! close to the city center. Many restaurants, pubs and cafes nearby. My favorite part was the cafe on the ground floor. Would definitely comeback again :)

I stayed for 4 night at this hostel and I really enjoyed staying here . Very affordable and location is good . It ‘s cozy hostel but there are so many bath rooms (so you don’t have to wait for bathroom in the morning ) and nice small kitchen which has enough equipments and common room in the basement ,table and chairs on the side and back of the building and there’s cafe which serves great coffee down stair .so so many spaces to socialize with other travellers I met a lot of nice people here .And staff are very friendly and helpful..if I have chance to go back to Halifax ,I would definitely stay at this hostel again !

I would recommend spending the extra money to stay in a hotel. This place was very dirty and cold. They have you strip your own sheets at the end of your stay (which is 2 mins work, so felt insulting they couldn’t manage that themselves,) at which point you get to see all the mysterious yellow stains & bloodstains on the mattress underneath. Not great. Lesson learned.

Mixed feelings Positives : - Location - Room was cute and well equipped (mini fridge, cold water, glasses, towels, desk lamp) - Kitchen is well equipped - Self check in very efficient (arrived around midnight and instructions sent by email were clear) - Little café is convenient and charming Negatives : - bathrooms and kitchen are filled with mold (shower curtains, spots on the ceiling, ceiling lamps) - kitchen is dusty - safety concerns (mostly because of drug use from other guests - I was in a private room so I didn't care so much but for people in dorms, might be scarier) (also, management did not seem to care about these guests going on full lsd / crack mode) - 10$ fee for storing bags after check out time in the middle of a common living room, unlocked and accessible to everyone - fan in the room, very nice for the hot weather we had, but did not work properly so it was kind of useless - fan in the kitchen had a lot of old dust stuck to it (A LOT) - staff was friendly but do not seem to have the proper ressources to handle this place Overall we loved our stay in Halifax, but it was not because of this backpacker. We only came back to it to sleep so it was alright. It was inexpensive for the season but the health and safety of guests should be the priority of any hospitality manager, regardless of the price point. For those reasons, I do not recommend and I will not go back.

Location is great, apart from that I didn't personally feel it's good for my stay. The room is dirty, suffocated and congested. The beds make noise when you turn around on it. Power sockets are loose, unable to plug in my chargers.

The hostel is a mess. Dirty most of the time, untidy, and the rooms are pretty small, always humid and warm, and the beds are terrible. I know that the cleanliness depends on the people using the hostel, but honestly, I don’t think it’s the case for this hostel. Everywhere I went there were flies and dust. The only good thing about the hostel is the personnel, they’re very charming and helpful, but you don’t really depend only on this when you’re at a hostel. Yes the area is a bit sketchy in the evening. Unfortunately this is the only hostel in the city, otherwise I’d have avoided it.

I was booked here to stay a week and left after one night, I will be upfront and say that I did receive a refund for my stay with no issues and the front desk staff were very nice and helpful when I raised my concerns. However, I feel that the pictures online aren't representative of all of the rooms and hostel quality. I was in a room on the top floor and it had peeling/cracked walls and ceilings, there were only 2 sockets in the room so I had to charge my phone from someone else's bed, it was the most unfomfortable mattress I've ever slept on - I could feel every spring. The pictures online show plants, coffee tables and chairs in the bedrooms but there was none of that. Just 3 bunks in a tiny room. Additionally, there was mould in the bathroom and worst of all was the mouse droppings and traps that I found in the Kitchen.

Low key sweet chill spot for coffee. Enjoy the atmosphere, great staff and authentic mixed group of patrons. Great service, my favorite is Altered Eggo and fruit shakes. I cannot speak to the hotel part of business.

Halifax Backpackers is a very flexible and reliable hostel-type hotel, with all types of facilities that you can get at any bed and breakfast. It has multiple two-story beds in each rooms which can house four people per room. It has kitchens at each levels of the building with a big fridge in each of them so if you prefer to get groceries and cook your own food then you also have that option. It has lockers assigned to each guests in the room but you need to bring your own lock and keys to keep your stuffs safe in them. There will be no privacy between you and other guests who are staying at your room as it is a hostel-type hotel. Some people will snore loud at nights and you will need to manage with it. If you have way too much problems with it then I would recommend you to use ear-buds. Each weekend nights there will be DJ parties at the café, located at the ground-level of the hotel, but it will not really bother your sleep as the sound hardly reaches the hotel rooms. If you are a party person then you will enjoy those DJ nights, and you will also get the opportunity to socialize and hangout with lot of people staying at the hotel.

One small fan in a room with a broken screen left the place boiling in the afternoon and very uncomfortable by the time you wanted to rest. They advertise fully equipped kitchen but there is no kind of coffeemaker, not even a funnel for pour over. Owner defends this because there is a cafe is downstairs. So she is increasing cafe revenue by not providing the appliance in the kitchen. Shameful, usury, self-serving tactics. Private room was not clean. Spider bites appeared every morning. And the cafe coffee was weak as water. Go to the excellent Cafe Lara or the Nook for a proper cup and good food.

Rooms were great, very tidy shared washrooms and shared kitchen. Amazing location- 14 minutes walk away from the Halifax waterfront. Amazing hostel atmosphere and experience with lots of like minded people. We had put word out that we were going on a road trip and got some people to join us for a day trip to Peggy's Cove, Lunenburg and Mahone Bay. Only warning is for if you're planning to shop groceries and keep in their fridge. The cleaning staff is a little too meticulous and very disorganized. They came up with a labeling system on the 3rd day of our stay and a whole 24 hours wasn't given before they put unlabeled stuff in the free food. Near the end of our trip, when every item we had in the fridge was labeled, stuff was still moved into the free food section. Portions of things we'd bought us to last a week were gone bought the times.

Super friendly staff upon entry. Warm and cozy environment with the cafe. Walking distance to downtown and the LF bakery (must try if you're visiting) Space was quiet and the caretaker was very welcoming and friendly. Had the 6 bed dorm to myself! Probably could have been swept and cleaned a bit better but it's a hostel which is kind of a given. Bathrooms were clean. Beds definitely stiff but i'd stay again given the rest of the good things. Thanks all!

I stayed 1 month in this welcoming and cheap hostel, and it was a very nice experience ! Good location close to the down town, cozy bedrooms, comfortable beds, very cool café with delicious cakes .. if i would have to suggest things to improve, it would be the size of the fridge in the kitchen, and the heating system who is a bit defaulting. But except that, everything is great, and Halifax is a very nice city also !

Super amazing staff and vibes. Everyone I spoke to at the cafe was so friendly and welcoming and the night staff were always around to check in and say hello. Was very excited to find a place so affordable and in such a great location. I will totally be returning here when I come back to Halifax! Unfortunately, the beds in my room were very uncomfortable, the lights in the bathroom and shower areas downstairs didn't work and there was a few times someone arrived late at night into my room without my knowing so that was a bit of a jump scare but those things come with the hostel experience (and price!). Overall the place was very clean, affordable, accessible and welcoming. As a solo female traveller I never felt unsafe but would love if there was a phone number residents could contact at night or a person on shift we could go to with concerns after the cafe closed as that would be super helpful!

  • 5/5 Connor N. 1 year ago on Google
This is everything you could ask for from a hostel. A safe warm bed to sleep in that is close to downtown. The rooms feel a little small but that's fair given the price. If you are planning on spending most of your vacation in the Hostel I might suggest splurging and getting a hotel room but if you are just looking for a place to crash while you are in Halifax, this is the place for you. Nice staff, clean, full kitchen and so affordable. I am so thankful for this hostel as it allowed me to do this trip and be present in Halifax for a once in a lifetime personal event without breaking the bank. If I am ever back as a solo traveler in Halifax, I will definitely come back.

Rooms are spotless. Well maintained hostel at the price point. The instructions to late check in was easy. This is for the management. The only issue we faced was in the Private Double Room. Because of the loose bolts, the Metal beds are too noisy. Please look into it . Staff is very friednly too . Apart from that, this place will be me and my friends 1st choice for accomdation.

I had gone with a large group so we ended up booking many rooms & although my room was grate my friends did have some complaints about needing to share outlets wich is not ideal if you are traveling alone. The staff was friendly although one of them did wander into our room without knocking a few times & although it is a hostel we wher all one group in the room so would have appreciated a warning especially if one of us (all assigned female) wher changing. Ther was also a shooting about a minute walk away from the Hostel.

  • 3/5 Marie E. 9 months ago on Google
We arrived late after 20 hours on the train and did the self check-in (check-in data had been provided beforehand per email), which presented no problem. But when we got into our room, there weren’t enough free beds for us. After contacting the manager, we were told that the hostel‘s booking program had messed up our reservation and there weren‘t any available beds left in the hostel. So two of us had to sleep in one bed. At least we got a refund for that one bed and the manager was quick to answer our messages. Apart from that, the hostel was quite good. The rooms and baths were clean, the kitchen had everything we needed and the lady at the front desk was nice. The location is good as well.

I stayed there a few months ago ( sorry for the delay). Michelle was very welcoming and considerate. She is working very hard to keep this place affordable and is open to constructive suggestion to improve the place, she even acted on it and bought more kitchen supply when we suggested to. I don't think you'll meet a lot of hostel managers that are as involved and caring as she is. The hosel is a little bit old but does the job, you have everything you need and the staff is very helpful. I think that the last few negative comments are really unfair and probably written by people not used to travelling and going to backpackers. This place isn't horrible, quite the contrary 🙂🙂 I had a great time there, people where friendly and I'm grateful for Michelle to have fought to keep an affordable place to stay.

100$ for a private room (tax included) will provide you: - room with no AC and minimum comfort - double bed with a bunk bed on top of it (???) - window facing a wall and a loud backyard - dangerously outdated sockets - shared showers with black mold, which you lock inside using almost "rotate a nail in the wall" method - bathroom mirrors placed on the level of your belly button - suspicious device on the shower cabin ceiling which may or may not be a camera - location in the middle of ghetto - probably because of the previous fact, main doors are locked after 10, so you need to use a back door to enter. It is not 24h reception - you are required to do a house keeper job and remove all sheets and pillow cases and drop in the laundry basket. You decide if it is worth it.

  • 5/5 Paul B. 5 months ago on Google
Everything is relatively clean for a youth hostel, the staff are accommodating and above all there's a café downstairs open to all. Good thing about the shower: there's a shampoo holder. Negative point about the shower: during rush hour, the water falls not on your head but on the shower tray.

This place is truly my favorite spot in Halifax. With it's super chill vibes and beautiful wall murals, local artists gather here and visitors from across the globe stick around to get a taste of the city. Some might say there is some magic that happens here if you come by often. The cafe has great food but even better staff who make you feel at home. Totally worth a visit any day.

In my opinion, the Backpackers Hostel in Halifax is definitely one of the worst hostels in Canada. Backpackers are deliberately being deceived here. 1. The website shows pictures of newly renovated bathrooms. In my opinion this is absolute deception. The bathrooms are dirty, the tiles are broken and it smells incredibly musty. 2. The money will be collected in full upon booking. This doesn't happen at any other hostel I've ever been to. It was very dirty, the kitchen was filled with flies and everywhere was used kitchen stuff. If you can afford it, stay somewhere else.

my second time back a lot has changed, friendly staff! was, very accommodating , felt looked after staying for the night , areas were kept clean , it is really the hostel vibe, nice they combine a cafe at the front of the building , at night it becomes like a bar so a great way to meet some locals , only thing that caught me off guard was there some random people at the hostel guest bathroom when there was a party going on front of building, but the curfew of quiet time after. certain period give you a good nights sleep

My partner and I stayed in the hostel for 4 nights and had a wonderful time. Hostel was clean and organized and the check-in was simple, having clear instructions for after hours check-in.
