My Dad has been at Camp Hill residence for veterans for a few years. The place is kept clean. Physiotherapy and visits to the neighboring QEII health services for any specialist needs are a bonus over typical long term care homes like those run by Shannex. The staffing level of CCAs is probably the same minimum no matter where. It's barely adequate for dealing with the number of people there needing help. With COVID-19 it wasn't possible to visit for awhile. After a few months, when I went in to visit, I found my Dad's toothbrush and holder had red growth on it and smelled like feces. A week before they had reported he was vomiting for unknown reasons (it couldn't be the food because no one else was sick) . He had a stroke a couple of years ago and one of the nurses specializing in stroke victims decided his toilet needs were impulsive behaviours, needing structure of a regular 2 hours routine. I pointed out to the charge nurse at multiple times that he also suffers from ulcerative colitis, and when there is a flare up he actually needs to go more often. They always say they understand, and then I witness the 2 hour rule is still in place the next time I am in. This failure to be able to accommodate his needs has been going on for a couple of years. It isn't easy to know what someone with vascular dementia is talking about, but the need to go to the washroom is something that is usually communicated well. When I inquired about the option to hire extra care for my Dad's needs (this was before COVID), I was told this was not allowed - he could have privately funded companion services, but not nursing care.

If you just pop in and out to visit your loved one, sure.. the staff are polite. It's not just about if the staff are nice or not, is it? It's the care of your loved one. If you are heavily involved in your loved one's care(as you need to be) especially if your loved one needs full on care, you have to be around to pick up the personal care that doesn't get attended to. Ie; Daily oral hygiene , leaving food on the corner of the mouth after meals causing uncomfortable skin issues. Not caring for the skin and cleaning with soap , drying, which in my fathers case, he developed a skin issue on the back of his head which he never had in his life until his washing being in the care of others. I find the staff is a little relaxed on consistency as I constantly have to ask them to do something basic that we all do in our daily lives as a part of our personal basic care.. I often come in and it looks as though this teeth do not get tended to regularly , and certainly not flossing. My father developed oral thrush and angular cheilitis due to the inconsistent oral hygiene care. You have to watch out for your loved one. If you are up close and personal with them you will see what is not being taken care of. For a veterans hospital, it could have more care staff.

I went to emergency after I had a sudden onset of symptoms of a life-threatening illness that leads to acute renal failure in 30-40% of patients if untreated immediately. I was told by the triage nurses at the QEII that I was at the back of the line and it would be at least a 7- or 8-hour wait. The triage nurse informed me there were 112 people and 17 ambulances ahead of me! From what I read online, I could not wait that long so I went to Dartmouth General. They did a blood test within an hour after I got there. As soon as they got the results back from the lab they were visibly panicked and rushed me onto a gurney and began treatment. It was truly an emergency situation and I ended up staying at the hospital almost a week. Thankfully I went to Dartmouth General because the QEII did not even see my case as an emergency. That is incredibly disturbing as I may have had permanent kidney damage had I waited 8 hours. I am not saying Dartmouth General is a great hospital either, but at least they saw an emergency and acted quickly.

I have visited this hospital several times in the last couple months with multiple people for a variety of issues and I am absolutely horrified by the service. Below are the details of my most recent experience; As an individual familiar with mental health issues, if you're in need of assistance you're better off not calling 911. The staff and the hospital are under qualified, inexperienced and display disgrace towards the mental health community. To place an individual in an "interview room" with not a word from a staff member for over four hours is a disgrace to humanity. Then finally after a five minute conversation with a doctor you're told they're under-qualified and you must now wait for a senior doctor. Two hours later the "more qualified" doctor arrives to determine the course of treatment. All while injured and ill patients lay sleeping in the hallways and chairs all waiting for the doctor who is "extremely busy". I received better health care in Africa.

My father and I were here nearly a week. He has dementia and I stayed 24 hrs a day. The staff were excellent, John, Jonas, Connie, David & Dakin all wonderful and caring nurses. It really is amazing how they do their jobs with so much kindness, understanding and patience ❀️ I had one recurring issue while we were here , and it was the medication room door. We were across the hall from it. If not caught slams hard. During the day is acceptable but not late in the night. I got tired of mentioning it, because each night was a new crew. Boggles my mind that someone wouldn’t think to make this door quiet. The food was delivered on time and always hot. One thing that surprised me is the amount of carbs given to patients on the diabetic diet.

Extremely friendly and caring staff. Everyone, from the receptionist to the paramedics and doctors, was very helpful and highly professional! Yes, the waiting times can be long (especially on the weekend), but it is an emergency room ... Of course, more urgent cases need to be dealt with first! It would also be great if the working conditions for staff in health care were better - 12hour shifts are neither fair on the staff nor on the patients.

I was rushed to the emergency room last week with an medical issue that led to me having emergency surgery. I realize people complain about wait times, but the doctor in emerge that day spent at least an hour trying to save my life before a surgeon took over. He was by my side while non life threatening people sat in the waiting room, and while I feel your pain in that, I'm also very grateful that the system works in the most urgent cases. I've also sat in an emergency room waiting for hours, before this week I also thought it annoying, but now I realize what goes on behind the scenes is far more important than I ever thought. Just to count off the top of my head, how many people it took to save my life that day, 2 surgeons, 1 ER doc, 3 nurses, and 6 strangers who donated the blood I received. I was given the absolute best treatment. From the time I entered the emergency room, to the day I left 4 days after, the level of care and competence was absolutely outstanding. I cannot say enough good things about the nurses during my time there. In the IMCU, Helen if you read this, you are an angel. For as many issues as we may see in our medial system, when it counts, we have the best care in the world, in my humble opinion.

A clean, friendly, well-run hospital for veterans. Family-friendly, and lots of activities for the patients. Staff is overall WONDERFUL but seriously: there just aren't enough of them. Place is seriously under-staffed. Like many countries, the way Canada takes care of its aging veterans could stand improvement for certain: the place is under-funded rather severely.

Waited to see a doctor from 5pm till 3am the next day. Despite completing the lab tests, nurses said I should lie on the bed and wait for doctor. 3 hours later no doctor in sight. Very very terrible experience. Recommended only if no other choice

Be prepared to wait over eight hours. Talked to the RN and no idea how much longer, apparently there is not enough Doctors... sad state of affairs.

Spent 6 hours in the ER today, and not even one doctor checked on me! Worst emergency room I've ever came across in my life, left the hospital with total disappointment and pain worse than before!

The ER, 5th floor staff and 7.1 floor staff... Heart surgical floors - they work hard and are constantly caring for the patients. Family matters. The Savory Restaurant, Tim Hortons staff, and Shoppers Drug Mart... People care just when we need it. Thanks QEII and your amazing associates. Nice family rooms to rest in while tending to family patients. TV. Puzzles. Books. Fridge. Piano. Microwave. Comfy chairs.

Have unfortunately wound up in the E.R. a few times in the past 3 years (including on a code census day), and have always been impressed with the calmness and professionalism of the staff there. The triage system means you can't expect it to be first come first served, which only makes sense, and some will wait longer than others. I've found the bedside manner of the doctors and nurses great as the casts have gone on, or the stitches been put in!

πŸ‘πŸ‘ Excellent staff! A huge thank you from Toronto to all the staff particularly of the 7th floor for going above and beyond in assisting my mother ( Carol ) after her lumpectomy surgery and for placing her in a room directly in front of the nursing station. πŸ‘ Great hospital with a lot of elevators and many floors. Residents eat a lot of jello. Kiosk based self check in is wonderful. They keep the cold ones in the basement so unless your appointment is on a bottom floor you should be fine. Talk to you doctor about how to access medical blueberries.
