Since I’ve lived in CT, my friends have raved about how New haven has the best pizza in the country. I’ve tried a few spots in the area and wasn’t the biggest fan. This changed after I had my first slice at Moderns. The dough wasn’t overcooked or super thin. It wasn’t dry, it was simple just right. The pie was stacked with tons of toppings. I did a pick up and it only took about 15 mins. My favorite part was the garlic bread. It was super tasty!! Definitely look forward to going back soon!

I am on a mission to show my friend who just moved to Connecticut from New York that Connecticut has the best pizza. We met here first and agreed on ordering a classic plain pizza with mozzarella so we could taste the sauce and the crust. That was our appetizer. For our main entry we ordered the veggie bomb. She took one bite and exclaimed, “Sold!” We bought large pies so we could take home leftovers and ate it warmed up for dinner, too. Just as good, well it is best when it comes out of the oven and it is served with a big smile. The old time leather booths are roomy and private. A warm, inviting atmosphere with sincere servers. Try a Gasosa soda mixed with seltzer for a light and refreshing drink.

Loved the pizza here! We found there was a MUCH shorter wait time than some of the other classic new haven pizza spots. Waited about 10 minutes on a Saturday afternoon when there were lines out the door at other places. We got the clam casino w/o peppers and a cheese pizza. Both were absolutely delicious and we will definitely stop in again!

Did the big 3 of New Haven. If I lived in New Haven Modern would be my spot and it’s not a tough choice. Modern 8.9 Sally’s. 8.4 Pepe’s. 8.1 The pizza at Modern easily had the best flavor of the 3. Truly embraces a strong garlicky taste and it’s tomatoes have a brightness and acidity that the other two lack. In fact this is arguably the most flavorful pizza I have ever had. The problem? The bottom isn’t crisp. Needs a little more cook down there as picking up a slice is not even possible without 2 hands. If it had a crisp bottom this would be in the conversation for best pizza on the planet. They also have the best check in if the 3. Put your name in and hang out around the joint. Buy a cold beer for $5. Still a wait but nowhere near as bad. Something about standing in a line makes time take forever.

Damn good pizza. Definitely has that signature char that you can read about as is the style here in Connecticut. The clam pizza... Very yummy. Different flavor to the crust, nice and chewy. Great friendly service, bummer they don't take American Express, but life moves on. Also, Connecticut medium is North Carolina large. 🤣

There's a reason it was just rated as the best pizzeria in America. First time visit to New Haven and Modern was on our list of pizzerias to tour and our expectations were high. Atmosphere, service and food lived up to the hype. I personally liked that the menu hasn't changed from the original menu hanging on the wall. We split 2 small pies among 4 people and they were delicious & filling. The foxon park beer was amazing! Be careful drinking a bunch of those!

Really good pizza here. I went around 1pm on a weekday and it was surprisingly busy for a weekday but there was still plenty of seating available. I got a regular cheese pie and the taste started off pretty good but then the cheese began to harden and didn’t taste as good as the first few bites - this is normal but I was surprised at how quickly it happened. The bake on the pizza also wasn’t as good as Sally’s and frank Pepe’s in my opinion. The service here is great though and this place is worth checking out just for the historic nature or the establishment

This pizza restaurant located in New Haven CT is the best. Everytime I visit CT. I go to Modern Apizza. The picture only tells you how beautiful this pizza comes to the table but the taste is scrumptious. I ate only 2 slices but I wanted more. I find there are many great Pizza restaurants in CT. This is one of my favorites. The staff makes you feel like family. Love It!!!!!

Friday night. No wait. Walked right in and were seated. Place smelled wonderful with all the pizzas cooking in the coal-fired oven. First time so we ordered a large pepperoni, small white pizza, small Italian bomb, and a small clam pizza. I was most impressed with the clam pizza because coming from Maryland, I've never had anything like it. Clams were very flavorful and with a few squeezes of lemon, it was great. The pepperoni pizza was also very good. I think our group's least favorite was the white pizza. They also had a few local beers on tap that were solid additions. I'm not sure it was the best pizza we've ever had, as we've done other places like Brooklyn and Manhattan that also claim pizza supremacy, but there's no doubt that this is a serious contender for best pizza in the country.

Best Pizza in New Haven? It is according to our family. I went on the trip thinking Sally’s would be my favorite but I liked Frank Pepe’s more. We are at Modern last and honestly we’re blown away. Best pizza in New Haven for our family!

Modern Apizza was the perfect place to try New Haven style pizza. The atmosphere on a cold fall night was warm and felt like a classic pizza parlor. We had the bruschetta which was great. The pizza was even better! Perfect balance of a crispy and chewy crust with delicious flavor.

Modern is absolutely worth the visit! I was driving through on my way back to Manhattan and figured a rainy Sunday would be an easy day to stop in. Even with the rain, Modern had quite the line. The offer pickup around the side of the building and they had a small mozzarella ready for me within 10 minutes! Reasonably priced and tasted incredible! It had a perfect cheese to sauce ratio - and the char on the crust was what every pizza should have. Will definitely be back!

This was my first time here. I'm used to thin crust pizza and I can say I certainly was not disappointed. The pizza came out and it looked like it had been burned...and I was a bit taken back. I've seen this before with thin crust pizza but this seemed like it was a bit much. After trying it though the flavor of the crust is undeniably excellent. It makes the entire Pizza in my opinion. We waited for about half an hour before being seated. We will definitely be back. Highly Recommend.

Voted 2023 Best Pizza by Pizza Today, Modern Apizza, a cornerstone of New Haven's pizza scene since 1924, proudly holds court in the city's esteemed triumvirate of pizzerias alongside Sally's Apizza and Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana. This venerable establishment crafts its thin-crust masterpieces in a coal-fired oven, infusing each pie with a tantalizing smoky essence and achieving that perfect crispy crust. Their menu, elegantly simple, caters to all tastes with pizza sizes ranging from small to large and a medley of toppings like pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, onions, and peppers. Beyond their legendary pizzas, Modern Apizza boasts a delightful array of appetizers and salads; the garlic bread and Caesar salad stand out as perennial favorites. Recognized by Pizza Today, a seasoned trade magazine for pizzeria connoisseurs, as the 2023 Pizzeria of the Year, this iconic New Haven gem continues to reign supreme with its delectable brick-oven creations, serving up slices of history and flavor in every bite. If Modern Apizza isn’t on your bucket list, add it now! It’s a must visit and will quickly become one of your favorite restaurants to frequent.

We got to the restaurant at 5pm on Black Friday and was told it would be a 30-40 minute wait for a party of 4. We were seated in less than 15 minutes. Service was fast. We started with a large tossed salad, which was the typical Italian place pizza. We ordered the Italian bomb pizza and an artichoke/eggplant pizza. Delicious and piping hot when it arrived. A place to go time and time again. Get there early because when we left at 6 there were tons of groups waiting to be seated.

Modern is such a cool spot. We ordered takeout and it was really nice that they had a separate area for pick up orders. Plus, you got a behind the scenes look at their kitchen and oven. We got a basic mozzarella pie and it was good not great. I think it may have sat in the box for a few minutes, which led to some floppiness. However, I reheated the leftovers in the oven the next day and they were amazing. The crisp really makes all the difference. The place was very busy for lunch when we arrived at 1230. Overall, it is a must stop for classic New Haven pizza.

Great place to go for lunch. I got there at around 12:30pm and there was a 35 minute wait for tables. We ended up waiting for 20 minutes. Some things I liked was that they give you disposable plates. The large mozzarella pizza was huge, filling and delicious! Their drinks are not refillable so we ended up getting a pitcher of soda. As soon as you get the check, you pay at the counter which can save time if you are in a rush since the place is very busy. Definitely recommend this place. Delicious Apizza! Thank you for the outstanding service! ❤️

New Haven pizza style with thin crust as you can see in the pictures, nice atmosphere, servers were kind, we went in a Friday at 5 pm and we didn't have to wait for a table, also we waited maybe less than 7 min for our pizza. They have a promo only cash for happy hour (beer, wine). I would love to come back.

This was our second visit to Modern . 25 minute wait on a Sunday night, with beverage’s offered for purchase during the wait. Seated within 20 minutes, ordered 3 pies which arrived quickly. The Apizza ranks right up there with Sally’s and Pepe’s I love that thin crust.

“omg this is the best pizza I’ve ever had” - my wife Toppings were high quality, especially loved the whole garlic and bacon pieces. Great ratio of sauce & cheese as well. The thin crust was crunchy but not super overcooked. Would definitely come back when I’m in the area.
