Thap But - Pen Tower is located next to Hoan Kiem Lake, where you can get the ticket to visit Ngoc Son Temple. In 1865, scholar Nguyen Van Sieu repaired the temple to its present appearance, including The Huc Bridge and the Pen Tower, which has a diameter of 12m and is 4m high. The square tower has five floors. In the body of the tower, Nguyen Sieu carved the three words "Ta Thien Thanh", meaning "Writing to the blue sky". People often come here to pray, and the surrounding area has lots of trees, making it a great place to walk around in Hanoi.

DOCTON MOUNTAIN, PEN TOWER If I hadn't read books about Hanoi, I wouldn't have known the name of the mountain to plant Pen Tower on top. This rocky mountain turned out to be dated long before the Pen Tower. During the reign of Le Trung Hung, around 1729, Lord Trinh Giang built Khanh Thuy Palace on the west side of Hoan Kiem Lake as a place to cool off. In 1740, Trinh Doanh replaced his brother in power. This God built a mountain east of the lake called Doc Ton Mountain to commemorate the victory over District Heo in the Vinh Phuc region. It was not until 1864 that Nguyen Van Sieu built the Pen Tower right on Doc Ton mountain. The Pen Tower also engraved the three words Ta Thanh Thien - Write on the blue sky. The meaning of these three words is to guide people's hearts to greatness and clarity like the sky! Doc Ton Mountain and Pen Tower have almost kept their architectural integrity to this day and are part of the cultural space of Hoan Kiem Lake./. Do Chau

Cool place, but unfortunately you can't sit and relax or anything because the entire area is full of really persistent street vendors. I wanted to chill on a bench and take in the scenery, but I couldn't be left alone. Also has gotten a bit dirty/grimy.

No need, to plan a visit and go there, since you will see the ink brush anyway: Next to the red arch bridge there is a 9 m high pillar. This is Tháp Bút, the writing brush / ink brush tower. Here you will find three giant Chinese characters depicting a pen to write on clear sky. This means happiness and prosperity, and on the tower itself there is the inscription Ta Thanh Thie, the sign on the bright blue sky.

Very nice to explore on a hot evening. Lots of cars, cafes, restaurants. Night markets nearby. Streets closed to traffic on Fri and Sat night. Recommend water puppets.
