Absolutely love this musuem! Was able to learn so much about the various ethnic groups of Vietnam from just one visit here. The traditional houses that you are able to walk through outside are phenomenal. This is a must see for anyone visiting Vietnam.

From my travel diary - Vietnam Museum of Ethnology focuses on the 54 officially recognised ethnic groups in Vietnam. It was really quite interesting because it had different areas spread all over the museum showing the housing and culture of the different ethnic groups. We stayed there for quite some time exploring the historic water systems and cooking places.

This is a fascinating visit. A large and well designed museum that exhibits information about the different cultural groups of Vietnam. You can see artefacts, videos, images and read about so many different traditions, beliefs, customs and history. Available in 3 languages (Vietnamese, French and English) throughout. It also includes a wide variety of full sized homes that you can walk through and learn about, to find out how people live in different cultural groups. I loved it!

Big museum of different ethnic groups in Vietnam. A lot of samples from different groups showcasing the unique styles and traditions of each group. Outside has full scale traditional buildings demonstrating communal buildings or regular homes and graves of different groups. There's also a small part showcasing other countries and cultures in South East Asia, Korea and even Africa.

For 40k dong. This place is definitely worth the price. So many things to see here, actually can go into a recreation of the old houses of different tribes, see the relics and so much more. Only issue is that it's a little far from the old quarter

Cool museum, inside is a lot of text and less interactive. If you like reading then inside is for you. The outside part is incredible though! Hand built homes, boats, huts, shelters etc from each of the ethnic groups in Vietnam. Really cool to be able to climb in, walk around and fully embrace their culture like that. Highly recommend.

Công trình Viện Bảo tàng Dân tộc học do kiến trúc sư Hà Đức Lịnh, người Tày thiết kế.

The garden area outside the main building holds some of the most interesting exhibits. Here, you can see the rural dwellings used by different ethnic minorities across Vietnam, as well as the fascinating Giarai tomb.

We spent about 3/4 of a day here and thoroughly enjoyed this museum and grounds. The outdoor structures were particularly interesting and fun to explore. The park area and gardens were a delightful respite from the heat. The small water puppet theatre was fun but basic compared to the Thang Long Water puppet theatre downtown. This was not a top pick in some guidebooks but we would recommend it for a short visit.

Great museum that you can visit for only 40k. Interesting exhibitions about the differents ethnicities in Vietnam. Far more than I expected and all with their own unique culture. That you can wander through some houses from different era’s and regions makes it really immersive. After visiting this museum, you’ll leave with a better understanding of Vietnamese culture and the ethnicities you might encounter during your travels here.

This is the first place you should visit when in Hanoi before moving to other places of interests/ regions. The details of tribal population spread is so beautifully created & narrated. After this induction crash course, you will better appreciate the nuances of the richness of the tribal people & culture that you will meet in the course of your trip throughout North Vietnam in particular & the country, in general. Heaven for cultural enthusiasts ♥️♥️

Excellent museum. Very well displayed, good lighting and tri-lingual descriptions of incredible exhibits. Thoroughly enjoyed this museum. Would be more enjoyable and make more sense if you've already been to Sapa and learned something about the hill tribes. They could do better by offering a good pre-recorded audio presentation. Loved learning about all the ethnic groups that make up Vietnam. The tribal and ceremonial costumes were incredible. So well explained. Broke our own rules by visiting a tourist attraction on a weekend. It was crowded and noisy!

This is the place everyone should visit in Vietnam. It is a very good source of knowledge about Vietnamese culture. It has three main exhibitions. The main one about Vietnamese 54 ethnic groups. There is another building about culture and things of South east Asia and other parts of the world l. And the most interesting one is the outdoor section with 1 to 1 scale actual houses. It takes around 6 hours to completely see, read and understand the things. But you would not regret spending one whole day in this museum. It has many interesting facts and artifacts about Architecture, Design, Culture, Fashion , Religions and Ethnic groups. The display and information is quite good compared to other museums in the region

A must see if you are interested in the different people of Vietnam! The inside of the museum had a lot of information on the many ethnic groups and their lifestyle in Vietnam. I found the maps especially useful to understand where they are located (it's not the case in women's museum for some reason). But the most interesting place is the garden where you'll find real size examples of traditional houses or shared houses with explanations of how the space was used. Really had a blast there and highly recommend

Not a bad way to spend a couple of hours. Took kids with us, and it was a little heavy for them. They enjoyed reading about the elephants, and liked going into the various different houses. Went to the cafe/restaurant - worth a visit. Food was very nice, and the staff are disadvantaged kids from a local school, I think. They were certainly friendly enough, and make nice food. Couple of nice shops, one for bog standard souvenirs, and one that sells crafts, arts and textiles.

It was really interesting to see and read about how many ethnicities and cultures there are in Vietnam, something I wasn't aware of before my trip here. Seeing the textiles, tools, and equipment the various ethnicities historically made was also pretty incredible. When we went today there was also some music and dancing going on just outside the museum as some sort of demonstration, but unfortunately I'm not sure why ethnic minority group or was. The music was really nice though! It was 40,000 dong per ticket, so not that bad. I'd recommend giving it a look if you're in the area and enjoy learning about the history of other cultures.

I could see various and unique culture and people all around Vietnam here. The best thing was I could see and learn more about sapa people which I visited few days ago. The building itself was modern architecture. Also, they displayed kind of traditional buildings of Vietnamese people outside the museum. They are open to visitors and could directly feel their culture which was very good experience. The only drawback was that food here was so expensive and mostly not related to Vietnam stuff like pizza. I was fortunate to see water puppet here. I don’t know even a word of Vietnamese but it was just funny and interesting to see it.

One of the best museums in Hanoi for both local people and travellers to learn about Vietnamese cultural diversity. Visitors can enjoy various activities and experiences on different occasions throughout the year, an ideal place for kids as they have special events on Children's day and mid autumn festival, and so on. Entrance ticket is reasonable (40k vnd per adult) and tour guide booking is available for more insightful information.

The Vietnam Museum of Ethnology is a museum in Hanoi, Vietnam, which focuses on the 54 officially recognised ethnic groups in Vietnam. This is a good place for learning about the different tribes and cultures in Vietnam. There are lots of information and interesting exhibit in the museum. Also, the outdoor section is worth the visit since you get to walk and experience the different tribe houses. Ticket prices are reasonable cheap for a nice museum. Definitely a must visit location. However, the coffee shop in the museum are over priced and not worth the money. Overall, just visiting the museum is awesome.

Ticket 40,000 VND This museum is amazing! There are sections dedicated to different ethnic groups of Vietnam. There is another building that is dedicated to other Asian cultures and history. There is also a big yard that is a replica of the life-sized Vietnamese traditional houses. You will need at least 2 hours, and 3+ if you want to be thorough. Great place to bring children. Also it was not crowded at all so i was able to walk around quietly. As of 2/2/2024, the top floor of the Kite building has a special exhibit dedicated to Korea.

  • 4/5 Fedor F. 4 years ago on Google
For me, different houses outside were the most interesting (audioguide needed to get proper explanations). And that's personal as manyhouses used to be real homes for real families. The interior part sort of boring. I would prefer to have some life (like, people showing some crafts making, possibility to touch stuff, to try something), not just stationary exhibits.

The grounds around this museum are beautifully landscaped. It's worth a visit just for that. There are many full size homes to walk through with signs in English, French, and Vietnamese to explain significant features. There's also a water puppet show with showings at least every hour after about 10 or 11am, which requires an additional ticket.

Best approach by taxi or grab.

Several tremendous buildings are really reflect the exact mode of vietnamese life. Very atmospheric place. In addition you may visit a pretty nice exibision inside the museum. Near the museum the part is located, 200 meter away there is the great outside market.

Lovely museum featuring cultures not only from the ethnic minorities in Vietnam but also other countries. Loads of kids around and they seem to enjoy it too. Great experience to find out more about vietnamese culture and their history. Exponates are well described with vietnamese, french and english translations. There are built traditional homes and other buildings to show life, customs and architecture of vietnamese people. You can walk in most of them if you take your shoes off. However, in some of them the floor was very thin and I was scary I would fall through. In the mornings, there is traditional water puppet show.

  • 3/5 Raj T. 1 year ago on Google
Working and opening hours are not clear (-1 star). I have visited this venue many times and they have always been closed – the guard has never been helpful with divulging when they will decide to be open again, usually trying to dismiss the pesky tourists (additional -1 star). The venue has amazing content and very clearly describes all of the ethnicities in Vietnam, their lifestyle, and their origins in French, English and Vietnamese. A superb collection of artifacts. The adjacent paper kite building seems to be the home of temporary exhibitions. As of current, there are Indonesian artifacts and works on display. On site, there is the Truc Lam restaurant which serves tea and coffee, and also in the architectural village, there is a canteen operated by the non-profit school, Hoa Sua. The Hoa Sua canteen is a bit of a disaster. Finally, the architectural village is great for a stroll and has a water puppet theatre if the cacophony and simplistic display is your thing. If you want to dive deep, plan on spending four or even six hours on site. I highly recommend, if only they had more accommodating and friendly staff who actually cared that Vietnam‘s heritage and culture is on display. They simply don’t.

It was great to be back for long periods. I came a bit late about 3:30 afternoon and spend most of my time in the main museum. Hope to come back to visit next time with much more time!!!

The museum indoor has 2 floors, and outdoor too has a lot more. Traditional huts are created to experience people's lives. They have created a little water stream around it , one can also see traditional rice grinding mortor pestle, and kids can see how it works . The flowing water will fill the wooden soon and make it work. One can walk in and out of the huts, and the artefacts are nicely preserved.

Whenever I visit a new city one of the first place I go to is the museum. This one definitely did not disappoint! It has three exhibitions. The first one is the main building and houses old artefacts from all of Vietnam's 54 ethnic cultures. You can see examples of pots, weapons, ships etc used by these people traditionally. The second is the architecture garden where they have recreated life size traditional village huts and architecture. It really gives you a feel for how people actually live in the villages. This was my favourite part. The third is a massive modern building which showcases artefacts and history from all over the world including other parts of Asia, Africa and the Americas. A must visit for those culturally inclined. It is a great oasis of peace too within a bustling city

This museum has so much depth, you need to visit this place right away when you’re in Hanoi. I learnt so much more about the 54 different ethnic groups in Vietnam than I would have online. The “Architecture Garden” was spectacular. You see various ethnic group houses as well as tombs and the details up close and personal. Recommend to spend at least 2 hours here or more if you love reading write ups.

One of the best ethnology museums I've been too. Was extremely enlightening on the diversity of groups and traditions across Vietnam. The outdoor space with recreated/transported versions of all the traditional houses/spaces was particularly fascinating.

This contains 2 buildings and an outside area. The main building as you come in is about the Ethnology of Vietnam. There is a lot of detail but even just browsing and reading a few of the details, while visually taking it in is very interesting. The building next door has items from other Asian cultures. It's a newer building which still has some exhibition space free. If you are short on time you could skip this one. The garden out the back showing the different hours of some of the different Vietnamese cultures and some of their older technology such as bronze working, or harnessing of river power is excellent. Such a contrast without one country. Worth the trip from the old quarter. We came by bus.

We got to see the real life model of multiple ethnicities in Vietnam, it was a nice experience and the ticket was cheap, I recommend visiting this museum if you are in Hà Nội even just one day

Highly recommend for anyone interested in the diverse ethnic heritage of Vietnam. The nicely done displays are well labeled and clearly explained. A wide range of Vietnam's ethnic groups are represented and described in detail. The native home displays really give you a feel for life in the rural villages.
