Entrance fee was very cheap. When enter, you have the choice of getting a tour guide, listening to the audio guide, or just freely explore on your own accord. I chose to listen to the audio! The history is amazing. They actually map out a route that would take you through a decent line of story. The experience and stories from past prisoners are tragic, and it broke my heart listening and seeing the inside. There was a memorial where visitors can go in the put incense in memories of the heroes. I appreciate the people who got locked up/received death sentences while fighting for the independence of the country I was born and raised in 🤍 I had to take off 1 star because there was only one restroom...

This was the first thing we did in Hanoi and I really enjoyed it. You do have to pay to go in but it's not expensive (30,000 VND per person). So much history and old artifacts to see here, it's very fascinating. Also pretty horrifying to read what went on there and see the conditions in which the prisoners lived. Awful but extremely interesting. Everything was in English too so easy to follow. Definitely worth a visit.

This is a good spot to learn about some history of French occupation and the war with USA. You only need about 30-60mins and the exhibition is laid out in an easy to see way, with lots of multi-language information. The price is very reasonable at 30k (half price for students)

This was a very cool and interesting museum. It’s built on the former site of the Hoa Lo Prison (Hilton - Hanoi) and has a lot of interesting photos and exhibits from the prison during its active years. The staff are friendly and approachable. You can also expect entry to be ~30 baht per person. I would say that no more than 1-2 hours is needed as the museum only takes up a small portion of true former prison grounds. With it centella located to the old quarter in Hanoi it’s easy to get here by walking or getting a taxi or grab!

Prices: 30k entrance fee, 100k for audio tour. Do the audio tour, it will help with you understand the history of the prison better. There are signs next to the pictures/exhibits but the audio tour is more detailed. Prison museums can be depressing, but despite its dark past the Hoa Lo Prison is not a super heavy pill to swallow. You’ll leave respecting and understanding the Vietnamese spirit a bit more after visiting this Relic.

very cheap entrance fee ~2$ and you get to experience history. you can opt to spend around 20$ if you want an audio guided tour if you are really interested but for me paying 2$ is enough. They show case the life of prisoners and what happened during the US invasion. They also sell milktea and snacks for a cheap price. worth visiting if you are into history

we really enjoyed visiting this museum. It was a very interactive experience. we arrived a bit late due to our flight timing. The closing time was 5pm, and we arrived at 5:10. Fortunately, the staff let us in to tour around. You can get the tickets right outside the museum.

This is a prison which was built in the end of 19th century, converted into a museum. It's one of the major tourist sites of Hanoi. Entry fee has to be paid at the door and an additional fee is charged if you want audio guide. It takes around 30 min to 1 hour to visit all the cells and look at the exhibits of items used during those days. There are posters displayed regarding the wars. Overall, a place worth visiting if you are interested to know about the political history of Vietnam

Historical landmark filled with interesting facts & relics. Learned lots about the history & struggles of the people … for both foreigners & locals. Good place to spend an hour (or two) 😁 Highly recommended. Tickets required for anyone above 15 yrs old. And this place is literally just next to the place we stayed 😅

Very interesting tour. There is an audio guide for 100k that I would say is optional but quite good. The tour can easily take you 1,5h-2h if you listen to everything or just 1h if you don’t take the audio

Very interesting place to visit. Not sure I'd bother with the audio tour as it was a little long for me and there are information boards in English on all of the exhibits anyway. We spent approx 1 hour going round, would have taken possibly double that listening to all of the audio. Definitely worth a visit though.

Decided to be touristy and try this place out, thought it was going to be small trek and for us to be in and out in half an hour but I was pleasantly surprised at the interesting history and wealth of information and exhibits provided, we spent 2 hours here! 30,000 dong entrance fee and would recommend paying the extra 20,000 for the little info booklet (we just bought one between the two of us) as it puts a lot in context and is a good read in itself! The exhibits were well laid out and informative as well as quite emotive, not to be a sad sap but I had tears in my eyes at a couple of points! Felt this has been one of my favorite excursions in terms of learning about Vietnamese history and brilliant value for an afternoon out. Would definitely recommend a visit!

Historical place to learn about Hanoi’s hardship in the past, how the people stayed resilience, never give up no matter how difficult it is to reclaim their country. Giving us a glimpse of French colonialism and the Vietnam war with US. Encourage to take the audio guide with 100k dong for detail sharing. Alternative you can read the short summary in the wall.

Cheap to get in, was no line on a Monday mid morning. The option for audio kit only necessary if you don't speak Vietnamese, French or English as there are many signs telling the story. Or if you are after a couple of personal stories the audio is good but it makes the tour longer. You can definitely get the same solemn and tragic atmosphere from what you see and read. Ordered and clear signage. A real insight to a war I wasn't highly informed about. Worth a couple of hours of your time for sure.

Best tourist attraction in Hanoi! The museum is well-designed, where you can learn the history of Vietnam from the French colonial period till the end of the Vietnam War. There's a lot to see in the prison, with clear description. There's also sufficient space to sit and enjoy the AC throughout the entire visit which is very nice during summer. There's also a small shopping mall and supermarket nearby the prison where you can grab some snacks after the visit.

The history of Hoa Lo Prison is a terrible one but this was such an interesting place to visit. The recreation using models really drove home how in humanely the Vietnamese were treated by the French. Standing in a cell or in front of the guillotine gives you a chilling perspective. The modern memorial outside is interesting and the stories of the American GI's were interesting. Worth a visit.

A must visit landmark when you are in Hanoi...tickets are easily available at the entrance, there was no queue when we visited...do not miss taking the audio guides (100k dong), but totally worth it...the audio guide has 26 sessions and the story adds to the charm of the prison tour with detailed narratives about the life and times of the prisoners...the complete tour will take about 2 hours, totally worth the time...they also have souvenir shops to buy memorabilia

Great Place to visit to understand the history of Vietnam. It was initially built and used by the French to hold and torture Vietnamese political prisoners and revolutionaries. Later, the Vietnamese used this prison to imprison American soldiers and pilots. It was termed as "Hilton Hanoi" because of the special treatment to the American prisoners and all the benefits provided by them. This is an important landmark in the city of Hanoi and a must go place for the tourists visiting Hanoi.

To understand modern Vietnam, one must visit here to see what happened in the past and how their grandparents and parents resisted and stood up for the independence and liberty. Especially for Koreans who have very similar historical background with Japan, it was so glad to find the similarity of two countries. And the bottom line is that, as a global citizen, we all must seek for peace and avoid war and colonization of other countries and their invaluable culture. Very meaningful place to visit!

This museum is a must in my opinion. Definitely spend the money on the audio guide, it was fascinating to see the prison while listening to the stories of ex-prisoners. It is a big (took us 2 hours) and well-organised exhibition that is worth going to. When raining, they even provide umbrellas for when you move between the buildings. We paid approx. 100K per person incl. audio guide. Very good value for money.

I was surprised by the thoroughness of this small museum and wasn’t sure if it would be worth the visit. However, I’m so glad we went. The displays and artifacts being exhibited told the dark history of the place and the heroic struggle of those imprisoned here. There was so much more to the place than just its few years as the so-called “Hanoi Hilton.” Still, those sections of the museum did an excellent job of presenting the Vietnamese side of the Linebacker battles. Expect to spend about 1 hour here. It is not really suitable for young children.

Learned a lot about Vietnam and French occupation here. Very moving tour with our guide. There were explanations for each exhibit and our guide Pet helped explain the barbarism that was inflicted on the Vietnamese people. Really enjoyed it and it covered the US Airman who were held here during the war but it felt a little bit one sided

interesting to see but also horrible to see how the French treated the Vietnamese prisoners here. the part about the American pilots who served here in the Vietnamese war has a rather glorified design, but is therefore interesting to see. All in all, really worth it and impressive! recommended if you stay in Hanoi and close to the center

The "Hanoi Hilton" is a colloquial name for Hoa Lo Prison in Hanoi, Vietnam. Originally used by French colonists for political prisoners, it gained notoriety during the Vietnam War when American prisoners of war (POWs) were held there. The nickname "Hanoi Hilton" was a sarcastic reference by the American POWs. Today, part of the prison has been preserved as a museum, providing historical insights into Vietnam's past. Ticket Price: 50.000vnd Great place to visit

So I'll be honest despite spending ages searching for this, asking locals, getting a tourist map out, basically any way we could to get directions we could not get there. We did however have a really nice lunch, including pate fingers and a beer at a great price. No idea how close the place was to the prison as we never found it. Its someone we would have liked to find but oh well just one of those things. Hope you find it.

Very interesting place to visit. Initially a Ceramic village, was later developed as a prison during the colonial french rule, used for political prisoners, and location of US military prisoner incarceration during the American War. Sarcastically named as "Hanoi Hilton" by the prisoners. Lots to see and read, as well as an opportunity to see the insides of the cells and the exhibitions to show the living conditions too.

(Translated by Google) Hanoi---Fireplace Prison The locals call it a "fire stove" because it was originally a village of ceramic kiln. It is worth to come to understand the tragic history of Vietnam. The Stove Prison was a prison built by the French during the colonial period in 1896. It was called "Maison Centrale" and was called "Hanoi Fireplace". The ridiculous "Maison" means "home" in French. It was the largest prison built by the French in North Vietnam. At that time, the major political prisoners who were anti-French colonials were locked up here and tortured. However, it is not the French colonial period that was frightening. After the founding of the North Vietnam in 1945, the Furnace Prison became a national prison and hosted major criminals. In 1973, the North-South Vietnam War broke out. At that time, the US Air Force bombarded North Vietnam and some bombers were shot down. The pilots were imprisoned here. The most famous one was the US Navy pilot, who later became the Republican presidential candidate John Mackay. Yep. Because the Viet Cong has dealt with war criminals in a variety of inhuman criminal laws, the reputation of terror has given the US military a "Hope Hilton" name.

The audio guide is a great addition to pay for which really provides lots of stories about individual prisoners (bring your own headphones/earphones as each guide has two audio jacks so you can use one between two). Very recommend visit in Hanoi. There is an exposition that explained both the time french imprisoned Vietnamese people and the time in the Vietnam war when it was used to imprison American soldiers. The ticket cost 30.000VND and you can get and audio guide for 100.000VND (you will need to keep the ticket and map and return it at the exit). This place is not only a museum but is an actual prison during the French colonial time for Vietnamese political figures. The actual setting of the place is neat and well organized. I would say the walk through all the space with the artefacts was smooth and well displayed. During the walk you can also enter inside an actual cell. It may be very uncomfortable for some after reading of their treatment during that time. It’s a good educational visit to see and witness the persistency, determination and strong willed people of Vietnam. This gives a better perception of their background and culture to get them to where they are now.

This would be an interesting museum to visit if you are interested in Vietnam's political history, with interesting lifelike exhibits and informative labels. There is an option for an audio guide at VND 100K, although I ultimately think it's not necessary unless you are really into the prison's history. Also, it would take quite a while to listen to every part of the guided tour, so we actually skipped quite a few sections. Entrance is VND 30K, and there is also a really interesting souvenir shop selling things such as propaganda poster postcards. Worth a visit!

During the Vietnam War, the prison was used to imprison captured American pilots. It became to be known as the "Hanoi Hilton". One of the prison's most famous guests was US senator John McCain. This is one of the places in Hanoi that exhibits what happened before and during the Vietnam war. The place is quite dark. Maybe it is to give visitors the atmosphere of the inmates during the time. Recommend anyone who comes to Hanoi to visit this place.

Hoa Lo Prison aka Hanoi Hilton. John McCain was held here with many other American POW’s. Place is both extremely interesting and extremely gut wrenching at the same time. It’s a must visit though. If you don’t come visit then why are you even in Hanoi to begin with? @nothin_but_views

Review is based on pre covid experience. The prison Museum is probably one of the most exciting museum that we have visited. It feels kind of eerie looking at the life like models of prisoners / the weapons & tools used in the prison in the past / the prison rooms that is used to locked up the prisoners. Spent more than an hour here just reading about the facts and stories , and walking thru the expeditions.

This historic place is one of the best attractions in Hanoi. They offer recodings-guided devices in different languages with a reasonable price which r really convenient for tourists. This tour is a great history lesson.

  • 5/5 Nazurah A. 3 years ago on Google
Went here with a local guide who thoroughly explained to me about this prison. The lighting was very dim maybe to give that ‘prison’ feel. Some areas were very eerie with gruelsome pictures and details explaining about the place. Spent an hour here. There were souvenirs being sold here. Tickets were very cheap. Just remember to keep yourself hydrated while walking around Ha Noi especially in summer.

Emotional place. You will understand what kind of torture the Vietnam Political prisoners underwent during the French rule... hard to imagine how they survived in the prison with their legs cuffed to a long iron bar. Please take time to read the boards placed everywhere to understand more. The pics and stories kind of haunted me for couple of days. I liked the Souvenir shop. Toilet was clean. Overall, worth a visit. It's cheap too.. 30,000 VND only.

  • 5/5 James C. 1 year ago on Google
A good history of the resistance and struggles of Vietnamese political prisoners during the French occupation. There is a small section on its use as an American POW prison that may give a different perspective than what's taught in the US. Worth a visit for anyone interested in Vietnam or US history.

We learned so much about the history of Vietnam and got a much better understanding about the people and country. You could stay here all day to read about what happened. So many amazing events retold.

I think its one of the best place to experience a full service, carefully crafted work to reflect on history of Vietnam. I had a wonderful time, from staffs to the actual show was suprisingly good. Plus the marketing people help changed the perception of a landmark like this.

At first, I did not see very much the reasons to visit a prison. Isn't it creepy ? However some friends who already visited it insisted that I'd go. So I went, and I do not regret it. We are exposed to the different perspective of the Vietnamese people about the modern wars / invasions that happen in their country with the prison as the center stage. It is definitely another lens from which we can see history. We also go deeper into Humans' nature in face of violence and conflicts as we are confronted to some excruciating choices : torture or compassion ? Perseverance or giving up ? Integrity or opportunism ? It made me think a lot and consider the different perspectives. I would absolutely recommend to take the audio guide which gives loads of information. The visit can be done in approximately 90 minutes.

It's such a nice place to know about history things. And it also scares me a bit about how people is cruelly in the past. And one thing I'm mostly impressed about is about Xmas picture which was drawn by an American soldier. That shows me about optimistic thoughts ever

What a highlight for a Black woman! The historical relevance is profound and the somber portrayal of life size prisoners chained together, took me back to the slave ships. Beautifully showcased. The outdoor memorial is quite impressive as well. All together a exhilarating and chilling experience.

The entry fee was cheap (30,000 VND. When entering, you have the choice of getting a tour guide, listening to the audio guide (for 100,000 VND - which is amazing and I highly recommend it), or just explore on your own. The experience and stories from past prisoners are tragic, and it broke my heart listening and seeing it all. A must visit if you’re in Hanoi, especially as a traveller to give you a great insight into the history of prisoners. Just incredible.

The prison leaves a lasting impression. Exhibits that are well lit and original components give a very authentic impression of the time. The only criticism is that to get all the information you need hearing aids with extra charge. Also for people who want to read the story one can expect to have a detailed text in English and not just the topic number on the recorder. Slight a gamble.

Great lil visit. Would highly recommend it if you have time to kill. Most rooms have some form of fan or air conditioner which can help with the heat. The entry tickets I can't remember but I think we're around 40k. The audio guide was 100k per person, quite expensive but around 90 minutes long.

Came with very low expectations, but spent an hour of very engrossed reading and scrutiny over the many displays of the prison relics. Hoa Lo Prison Relic depicts a very thorough account of the lives of the vietnamese during the Vietnam Indochina war. From living in prison, executions, bombings and escape. Would highly recommend this tourist attraction over the others such as the water puppet show. The audio guide is recommended but not compulsory to enjoy this attraction!

Ticket : 30.000 dong / person Audio guide : - Vietnamese : 100.000 dong - English : 150.000 dong I have been here a long time ago, they used to describe the crime and torture with dummies, but now they changed. Mostly reading and sometimes it was confusing, because some pp with the audio headset blocked the way. We really wanted just to look closer to see.. but they stood there and closed their eyes ????? Very interesting history behind and i learned a lot about how strong Vietnamese was. Big respect for them. The guiding numbers were also confused at first, we thought we visited all, but then we missed some of this and that spot. Took around 2 hours to read and watched all of the documents. They only have english translation, so prepare..

👍 if it helped. Know history, or we'll be doomed to repeat it. It doesn't matter where you're from in the world, this site is a must visit, to learn and to see this part of our history as a human kind. It's a self tour with personal audio. Not cost much at all and takes no more than 1 hour. The location is only a 15 minutes walk from the city center, so it is easy to walk.

Hoa Lo Prison Relic is one of the tourist object in the Old Quarter of Hanoi. It is a museum which kept the history of the prison life in Hanoi. There are numerous exhibits which can tell the story inside the cells during colonialization era. Ticket can be purchased on site at the ticketing counter during visitation. The museum can be reached by walking if you are staying at Old Quarter zone or e-hailing Grab.

Great experience. Fantastic time viewing the different areas of the prison. Really gave good insight into how the prison has been used over the ages as well as the conditions people lived in. Took about an hour and there was English throughout.

As one of the labels in the museum says, Hao Lo Prison was one of the biggest and highest-security prisons in Indochina, so I think visiting this museum it's definitely worth your time. Hoa Lo Prison has a particularly grim history (about which you can read on the labels) and visiting this place can make you feel uneasy, but it's important to know what happened there. I really appreciate putting the life-size figurines there, because that way you can imagine better how the prisoners lived there and the way they were treated.

Very interesting place which really tries to imitate the prison atmosphere. The information is very clear on the political context of the prison and what the prisoners had to endure. Be prepared for quite some propaganda tho especially in the part on the imprisonment of American pilots and how amazing they were treated by the Vietnamese.

  • 5/5 Jass V. 4 months ago on Google

The Hanoi Hilton, is possibly one of the hardest museums I have ever visited. This establishment has seen many deaths, hardships, and torture. It is important to remember the history despite how painful it is. The museum is huge and not even the full size as it once was. Visit on a weekday, the weekends are quite busy and crowded.
