We had an absolutely amazing meal at Cumulus. This place deserves to be at the top of your list for food in Hanoi. Incredible hospitality - the attention to each guest is unreal - and simply wonderful food - every dish was delicious, we were shown how to eat each one, and the menu comes with detailed explanations in English. Absolutely ideal for any travellers exploring Vietnam for the first time, you will get a real taste of Vietnamese food without having to worry about how to order or how to eat, but also fantastic for the seasoned lover of Vietnamese food. This is our third trip to Vietnam, and we couldn't have been more excited to find this place. It's the very definition of a "hole in the wall" - without Google Maps we would never have found it, and thank goodness we did - much nicer than some of the more expensive restaurants we've visited in Hanoi. Though the decor might be a bit simpler, the atmosphere, service, and food were much better. We ate here with my parents - the owner, who takes great pride in his restaurant (with good reason) even insisted on feeding my dad the first bite of each dish, and my mum, who is an avid cook herself, even tipped up the dishes so she could finish off the sauces - I've never seen her do that anywhere!! The cool even squeezed the limes and made one of the sauces fresh at our table. Every dish we ordered was delicious. I don't think you could go wrong in ordering anything off the menu (especially if you take the advice of the menu and owner), and there is an extensive vegan and vegetarian menu available as well (in fact, it seems to be the main menu, though there are plenty of meat dishes too). Soup, rice, and tofu are served as complementary sides - the tofu is stunningly delicious. You won't regret it!

The food is delicious and the motivation to do good can be read in the owner’s eyes. He takes time to explain things to every customers. Big up for the cooks too who are excelling at Vegan Vietnamese Cuisine.

Amazing restaurant that you HAVE to try in Hanoï! The food is delicious and you get plenty of it (seriously don't over order 😅) The owner is really nice and will show you how to enjoy your meal The best way possible! Be careful that the entrance is a bit hidden, the pictures that you see on Google map are not up to date... here is one of the new entrance to help you!

On the second floor of a nondescript alleyway houses a pure unadulterated North Hanoi local food delight . Complimentary Banana Flower/Beansprouts Salad with Braised Tomato Tofu dipped in Chili Lime dressing to start with; followed by another complimentary rice with vegetable soup, which is like Teochew porridge. Lemongrass prawns is fresh and cheap. Both Lemongrass Duck and Garlic Bamboo Shoots are simple fried dishes. Nothing fancy but pure bliss.

Highly recommend this place to eat true Vietnamese food. You choose 1 vegan plate each but it comes with tofu, rice, soup and herbs, just delicious. We could have taken only 1 plate for the two of us. You can feel the good energies in this tiny room which was full really fast ! Food was super tasty and vegan

Amazing authentic Vietnamese food cooked by family restaurant. The restaurant hides in a small alley. Be patient as owner could be busy at times.

I decided to give this resto a shot after reading the many good reviews. It's quite surprising at first when you go, since it's a really tiny humble restaurant up a narrow staircase, bit unkempt, limited seating, open kitchen area, no frills, no aircon etc. Please temper your expectations. Food was alright. Braised tofu and omelette are really good, Bun thit good, salad beef chewy, meat dishes taste okay but bit chewy. The place has questionable hygienic practices visible (saw hair in food). Comfort room wasn't good. Only try if you don't mind. Hope they can improve on these shortcomings.

‏An impressive local folk restaurant ‏The owner is such a warm-hearted person with a desire to give of himself and his creation. ‏Each dish was served with heartiness and an explanation of how the locals eat the dish. ‏We ordered beef and an starter which were really tasty and fresh. ‏warmly recommended.

If you are looking for a delicious dinner and a first rate dining experience, please choose Cumulus! We ordered the mixed hotpot and the owner William carefully showed us how to eat and cook everything correctly. He made us each a special dipping sauce and provided us one of the most personal and enjoyable dining experiences of my life! Not to mention the food was so delicious. In all honesty I will cherish this experience and will definitely be returning.

AMAZING! We ate late lunch: I took Bun Cha 10000/10 and green papaya and beef salad 9.5/10 , my friend took the fresh spring roll 9/10 and the banana leaf salad 10/10. Everything was clean and super fresh (the boll of ledes and mint and all the other greens). The owner showed us how to eat every dish the proper way. So if it’s your FIRST time eating VIETNAMESE food please do go there. About arriving there: the restaurant is located in the second floor. U need to go in and keep going for a few meters before seen the sine. There is a big VEGEN menu with substantial for all. HUGE recommend! Had the best time and best food.

We visited on our last night in HaNoi and in Vietnam. So glad we came to this restaurant, in all its simplicity hides a true gem. It was the best experience we had in all the duration of our journey, the food is delicious but above all the honesty of the people will make you want to visit again. Don't be scared and just follow the sign to the second floor. You will have a truly remarkable experience here.

I absolutely loved eating here tonight. The food is incredible and the portions are massive, plus they brought out lots of extras that we weren’t expecting so it ended up being like man vs food! Not that I’m complaining because it was all so delicious. The owner and kitchen staff work so hard to keep everything turning over smoothly and the atmosphere is very vibrant inside. It can be a little bit daunting to enter from the street as you have to walk down a sort of doored alleyway to get there but it’s well sign posted so you know where to go. Overall an amazing experience and I definitely suggest giving it a go!

I absolutely loved this place, it was such an authentic Vietnamese experience. We all ordered the vegan fried chicken dish and so much food came out! As well as our main which we ordered they gave us rice, vegetable soup, tofu and salad. They made a delicious lime dip in front of us and showed us how to eat the tofu and salad. They have a vegan and a meat menu but the meat eaters really enjoyed the vegan chicken!

One of the best experience in Hanoi so far. Hidden on a small entrance, a long and dark corridor leads to a small cozy room upstairs and a beautiful life story. Kind and harm owner, with his delicious feast - mostly vegetarian dishes. Any choice comes with sides of tofu, rice, bowl of greens, fresh squeezed sauce and hot soup. We have the papayas salad and Fake Chicken. Both delicious and fresh. Very special experience. Must go!

Cannot praise this place enough. There is food for the body and food for the soul. This place offers both. William's journey to entrepreneurship is amazing, so is his zeal to treat his guests. So difficult to believe that you pay for just 1 item, and soup, rice and protein in the form of a tofu preparation comes free, and that too in unbelievably large portions. Everything was delicious, specially the clear soup, which I have never had so flavourful in Vietnam during my month long trip.

Dinning at this restaurant was an experience. The staffs were genuine and showed us how to eat bun cha and their fried tofu in tomato. They says thank you every time they served us a dish which was really adorable. Food was decent and portion was rather big. Oh yes friendly note, please don’t over order like we did! We didn’t know rice, soup, and tofu dish was already inclusive. Anyways, the owner of this stall has a rather motivating life story from being a kid from the street to a social entrepreneur wanting to help more kids on street. Do support if you are around Hanoi Old Quarter!

More like visiting a family home than a restaurant. This was such an enjoyable, authentic experience. The food was really excellent and William, the owner, showed us how to eat each dish. There's a real social enterprise vision behind Williams restaurant and it was a pleasure to help him on his journey

Just an amazing place! The food is very good and you get all different dishes on the side when you order a dish. Even if you order just one dish your whole tabel will be full of wonderful food. The owner is extremely kind and wants to give you the best experience. He will tell you his story which is touching and admiring. Go there to here his story and get very very good value for your money!

Tucked away down an alleyway this restaurant is family run and feels like you’re enjoying a meal in their home. There’s a fully vegan/veggie menu or separate meat menu to choose from. We went for the bún cá with bbq’d pork, which was one of the best I’ve had in Hanoi. We then ordered a main of duck noodles, fired spring rolls, which all came with a complimentary tofu and tomato dish, rice and egg pancakes. Huge portions! As we were leaving the owner explained how he grew up in poverty and is now a proud business owner seeking to give back to those in need. A really special experience and great find!

Through a small alleyway that is easy to miss, follow the signs to "restaurant" you will have one of the best meals of your trip. Amazing vegan and vegetarian food. You get complimentary rice, salad and tofu dish that you dip in lime and chilli dressing as well as the most delicious soup. All the other meals are vegetarian or vegan meat and are INCREDIBLE. Honestly, it's one of the best meals I've had while travelling

Best food in Hanoi! I felt right like home, so far from home. The food is amazing, the owner and staff are so nice, they showed us how to pair the food in order to get the best taste! Too bad I discovered it so late in my stay in Hanoi. I could eat here every day! The owner is also a very nice person helping so many others from the little he earns. I fully recommend this place.

Just AMAZING! This food was crazy good, and the price even better. Portions are great! Don’t know how they manage this (also kitchen wise 😄it being quite small) but it’s a must-go! I don’t know if i’ll find a better place to eat and i still have most of my Vietnam trip ahead of me. They also showed us how to eat the dishes. Also, take some time to read the story behind this place/the owner, it’s very moving, which makes your meal even better

Outstanding place. It's a must visit for Hanoi. Reason: pure authentic experience. You need local experience with great food and service? Visit this place. I admit, I cannot eat at shady places but this ain't shady, this is authentic! Also, lot of free things!! They give 3 dishes free to eat. But also other things too.

Bun cha was the best! We couldn’t get enough of it.

Delicious traditional Vietnamese cuisine. We ordered the bun cha and both crispy and fresh spring rolls. All were amazing! This bun cha was wayyyy better than another more "hyped" place in Hanoi we tried earlier in our trip. Also a unique experience finding this place walking through an unassuming hallway between other shops, then upstairs into what seems like a bedroom/living room turned restaurant. Very authentic experience. Highly recommend.

Came here looking for roast duck but lucky for me it wasn’t being served until the evening as I had the pleasure of eating the Bun cha , this is the nicest bun cha I’ve had in my short time in Hanoi but I will be back for sure. The owner William has an amazing story and he is very and helpful. Please do stop here if you’re nearby, it is hard to find but once you do you won’t regret it!!!

Uow! So far, the best food I had in Hanoi! Huge portions and extremely delicious! I recommend the banana flower salad! They also give you free portion of rice, tofu, salad and vegetable soup! All tasty! And the lemon juice is also great! This place is a must when you're in Hanoi!

Great place to eat. There are different menu for vegan and non-vegan so be sure to ask upon arrival for your preference. Ate the hot pot seafood and was more than enough for 3 persona. Would come again. (Owners are extremely nice and is 100% family restaurant with a great story.)

  • 5/5 Leo N. 1 year ago on Google
A small and homey restaurant, which serves authentic Vietnamese food. The portions are relatively big. The owner, besides being very nice and generous, saw we aren't able to finish all the food we ordered, so he suggest we cancel the extra dish we ordered which he still didn't serve us, free of charge. I highly recommend visiting this place!

Amazing food and even more incredible story of a struggling entrepreneur who has been through a lot. I had the Pork bun cha along with the spring rolls. It was delicious, hearty, home cooked food. I struggled to complete the whole portion by myself.

This restaurant was very close to our hotel and the best rated, so we decided to give it a try. The owners are very welcoming and helpful. We ordered 1 appetiser to share, 2 mains between us and 1 vegetable side to share. We ended up with about twice what we ordered as you get rice, vegetables, soup and a tofu dish as extra (this was refilled as soon as we finished it!). Everything was delicious and we were able to try some new ingredients for a very reasonable price. I am vegetarian but my boyfriend is not - he still really enjoyed the 'fake' meat and thinks it is a must even for non-vegetarians and we agreed it was probably the best meal we've had in Hanoi. You can also see them preparing your meal while you are waiting. We recommend the papaya salad, BBQ 'chicken' and sweet potato leaves. One thing - take your appetites, you will not go hungry!

Amazing find in Hanoi. When you find the restaurant walk down the alley and at the end on the left is a stair case (follow the signs). We had bun cha which was incredibly flavourful and there was so much food. The restaurant owner has an inspiring story (you can read about it in the restaurant)

Worth going for the experience. You order one dish and they bring out so much more ad ons and things to try. Plus show you the traditional way to eat it. Quantity of food is amazing. Experience is great too. Food is good. Place is pretty touristy. Might have to wait for a table sometimes.

  • 5/5 Marlene A. 1 year ago on Google
Definitely worth to go! Just make sure you're really hungry when you go there because you get a huge free meal with your order :) the owner is very kind and the food was amazing! It's just a bit tricky to find, I'll attach some photos to make it easier :) it's a very small alley and then you go on the 2nd floor.

It was definitely the best food in Hanoi. Big portions, affordable prices and lots of free stuff. The owner is very nice, he explained how to eat each of the dishes. Truly, a wonderful culinary experience.

Great little restaurant hidden down a narrow alleyway. The food was excellent, and the servings are huge. They have full size tables and chairs and the beers are cheap. All the staff are really friendly and helpfull.

A touching dining experience I will never forget. Delicious and well priced food + fantastic service. William and his staff will show you how to eat each dish properly and are always smiling. You also get to learn about William’s incredible life journey that got him to where he is today. 5 stars.

Probably the best non-street food we have had in Hanoi. The other reviews have said it all. Good food, big portions, friendly service. Ordered way more than we could eat for 100,000 vnd each and the food was quite delicious. Would recommend!

  • 5/5 Jauna F. 1 year ago on Google
We stopped by here for lunch in January and would highly recommend. Such an authentic experience and such good food. We passed it at first, you have to look carefully for their sign and follow the long hallway/alley toward the back and up the stairs. It’s a small but cozy place. Clearly run by a family. We ordered an entree and two starters but got sooo much food. You will not go hungry here, careful not to over order. We had the spring rolls, bun cha and the sweet and sour chicken. They brought us their tofu in tomato sauce as well, rice and a soup. Everything was delicious. The owner showed us how to eat the bun cha and the tofu. Very attentive and accommodating, would definitely go back. Also so inexpensive!
