Located at a corner of old Co Ngu Road, present-day Thanh Nien Road and Quan Thanh Street, near Hanoi's West and Truc Bach Lakes, Quan Thanh Temple with its spacious and charming landscape helps highlight the ancient and romantic beauty of this area. Legend has it that the Temple existed in the south of the To Lich River. After King Ly Thai To established the capital (1010), the Temple was moved to the north-west of the capital. It is one of the 'Thang Long tu tran' - four famous sacred temples, which also includes Bach Ma (White Horse), Voi Phuc (Kneeling Elephant) and Kim Lien, honouring the Gods who guard at four main directions (East - West - South - North) of the ancient Thang Long Citadel. The Temple is dedicated to Saint Huyen Thien Tran Vu who guarded and administered the north of the country. That is why it is also known as the Tran Vu Temple. Quan Thanh Temple is not only famous for bronze cast statutes but also the art of wood carving. The temple's wooden structures were carved skillfully with different shapes and patterns, such as four sacred animals, fish, fir-trees, bamboo trees, flower baskets, wine gourds, swords and daily activities on the heaven and the earth. All were created with the art style of the Le Dynasty. Through the many ups and downs of history, the Temple has retained its unique structure, beautifying the landscape of Hanoi . It has become a famous religious cultural place of Hanoians and an important historical and cultural relic of the country.

$1.50 entrance fee, and you can enter this temple. Simple yet, you feel relaxed, and you just want to sit and look up the trees and the surroundings and think nothing at all.

I rode a Grab to here. While I was in Hanoi, Grab saved my life and riding fee is very reasonable. When you arrive temple, you need to pay for ticket at entrance (30,000vnd/person). At first I did not want to pay and thinking to leave, but there is an interesting and famous story about this temple. So, I decided to pay and visit inside temple. After I saw inside, I was not so happy because there was not much to see. But now (after many weeks), I think it is worth seeing the legend turtle 🐢

Such a peaceful temple! Go early in the morning to beat the crowds. It is possible to sit in the garden on the benches for reflection, you'll immediately notice the birds and butterflies. The surroundings are beautifully maintained and it is highly ornate inside. So much beauty!

Located in the same name ward near the West Lake, easily reached by a short walk from Truc Bach Lake, the Quan Thanh Temple (Vietnamese: Đền Quán Thánh), formerly known as Tran Vu Temple, is a Taoist temple in Hanoi, Vietnam. Famous as one of 4 Sacred Temples of ancient Thang Long citadel (White Horse Temple in the East, Temple of Kneeling Elephant in the West, and Kim Lien Temple in the South) and dated to the 11th century, the temple was one of the principal deities in Taoism and also one of the leading tourist attractions in Hanoi nowadays. The temple’s name means Place of the Gods. The name of the long street running by the temple is also called ‘Quán Thánh’ street

Beautifully preserved temple. Fine garden with large, old trees and a few bonsai; elaborate carvings on the roof; inside, calligraphy and an impressive bronze statue. There are also a few 19th century documents inside: photos of the temple as it looked then, a map of its grounds.

This is the place where they had government officers raised up and taught very strictly. The place is cool, filled with old trees and the equipment at the time to teach writing. There is also shirk happening in some rooms where they worship idols. When you walk in the place you can see the food, fruits, and beer offered to these idols. I always thought don't they ever realize these are just objects and they won't ever speak nor eat? I hope people start questioning some of their believes that lead them astray.

This historical temple is among the few nestled near the West Lake area in Hanoi. To explore its rich heritage and beauty, there's a nominal entrance fee required for admission.

A modest looking temple from outside but beautiful on the inside, with a 4m tall bronze statue inside the temple. Lots of pretty statues on the courtyard and cost 30,000 VND (£1) definitely worth stopping by on the way past. I would even make the trip just to see it!

Quan Thanh Temple (Đền Quán Thánh). This is a Taoist temple in Hanoi, was build in the 11th century the temple was dedicated to Xuan Wu(Trấn Vũ), one of the principal deities in Taoism. Base on the story this one of the Four Sacred Temples of the capital city, that were built in four directions to protect the capital from malevolent spirits. Quán Thánh protects from the North, while the other three temples protect from the other directions: Bạch Mã from the East, Kim Liêm from the South, and Thần Linh Lang from the West. Quán Thánh Temple has been renovated several times, most recently in 1893 when the principal gate and the shrine were redone, so the architecture is a mixture of the many different styles of the imperial era. The main features of Quán Thánh Temple are a large yard shaded by a giant banyan tree and a shrine that contains the famous bronze statue of Trấn Vũ. Quán Thánh is located near West Lake in the Quan Thanh Ward. Nowadays this is one of the leading tourist attractions in Hanoi, if you take a Hanoi city tour they will show you this place as well.

I guess it didn't cost much to get in. I don't understand the commercial products in front of the shrines... noone was able to explain it to me. I think they were gifts. It was quite pretty though. And google translate helped interpret alot of the signage for me. Oh and watch out for the falling mangos... I nearly was hit.

Really beautiful and peaceful. It's a 1000 year old temple and a famous tourist attraction. However, I didn't get much crowd during my visit, and whatever visitors came in, left within a few minutes. You can spend some time here reading on its history and relax/meditate.

Small taoist temple. A quick walk around. Good to visit if in the area. Don’t need to travel here just for this. The given online QR code guide is broken. Just read about it on Wikipedia.

I took a Grab to Tran Quoc Pagoda & from there walked here on pedestrian road by the west lake. From here I walked to Ho Chi Minh mausoleum & then to temple of a literature (they are all in the vicinity) & you can visit if you don’t mind walking. This has an entry fee of 30k VND, I wouldn’t say it’s that great…you can skip if you are running short on time. Nicely maintained Taoist temple. Has historic significance

I think people are misusing the star ratings a bit (5-star should be reserved for 'must-see activities') in rating this so highly. Pleasant walk around but nothing to see really, 10k entry fee and you'll only spend about 10-15 minutes here it's really small and not that interesting. Pop in if passing by but I wouldn't go out of my way to do it.

A good, well-kept temple with friendly staff. We needed something like that after the disappointment of West Lake. Big courtyard and gardens. A few buildings containing relevant historical stuff. Plenty to photograph. Recommended if you're in the area, but not worth a trip alone. Just 33 pence entrance fee! (10,000 dong)

A great and peaceful temple to spend time introspection or maybe having a calm place to discuss with somebody.. Nearby to the big lakes.. it makes a excellent destination to have a stroll around on cloudy day... Fortunately we had while afternoon cloudy for us.. and time went brilliantly.. There are some restaurants nearby and roadside vendors also..

It’s an ancient temple just across the west lake. The construction is quite similar to the temple of literature and the area is smaller.

We found this to be one of the nicer temples that we visited, the grounds were small but nice and the interior was worth seeing and it was quiet and not crowded so you could really observe and enjoy

It’s always refreshing to get away from the traffic and scooter chaos of hanoi - the random assortment of temples give you a chance to have a break. Quan is pleasant and cool with towering trees in the courtyard providing ample shade. Beautiful temple with impressive shrine

A very interesting small yet elegant and beautiful edifice. It has an aura about it that is with many historical buildings and places and is a super insight to the past. I enjoyed it

Beautiful 1000 treats old temple with a big 350 years old statue inside. The French called it the temple of big Buddha, even though the stature is of a general and not a Buddha.

Visit at the same time as Tran Quoc Pagoda as only 5 minutes walk away. We arrived at the pagoda and it was closed for lunch so walked to this temple. Worth visiting and was good to see. There is a small entrance fee to get in.

Beautiful Taoist temple in the heart of Hanoi. The ambience is peaceful. Entry is 10000 Dong.

  • 4/5 Roy Shefi (. 1 year ago on Google
You should come here when in the area and stop by the Taoist temple, there is no entry charge. Except a 5 - 15 walk around a temple with minimal explanation but with people worshiping as it is active.

Lovely 11th century taoist temple a short taxi ride from the old quarter. We'll worth a visit. There is a good coffee shop across the road. From here you can walk to Ho Chi Minhs Mausoleum.

Ticket costs 10,000 vnd to visit this Taoist temple in Hanoi with 4 tonnes bronze statue inside the temple near West Lake. The statue was made in 1677 as the North Guardian for Vietnamese to stop the invader from the North. You can walk to Tran Quoc pagoda and John Sidney Mccain monument.

Nice little temple in a pleasant part of town near 2 lakes. 10k entrance fee with the inevitable seller of knock off goods outside. A nice quiet little rest spot and bit of solitude.

Absolutely beautiful and very well cared for. Once inside the immaculate temple, all the noise outside disappears. Just wish there were information boards to help us appreciate the history.
