Rani Rashmoni Bhawan

Historical landmark

👍👍 The bhavan is still standing head strong reminding us about the socio-economic reforms of The Bengal. The nostalgia cannot be explained just in lines. People often mention house, Rani, Dakshineswar, heritage, building,

The house situated at Janbazar, known as Ranimar bari but utterly in a grave condition. It's hard to believe that the person who build the Dakshineswar temple, her own house is a mess. The iron lady of bengal who always served for mankind and never dare to the british lords seems not received any financial aid from government to maintain this heritage property except the puja mondap, even the trusty board of Dakshineswar temple didn't pay any attention to this house I think, whereas sri sri Ramkrishnadeb and swamiji put their fingers, Ramkrishna mission have taken responsibility for those places and I believe this house has the same importance to be restored. It has to be mentioned that this place has no ticket, no washroom. The ground floor is rented except the thakur dalan and the upper floor is residual and access prohibited.

One of the oldest Durga Puja, starting from 1790 is organised at this venue. The place wears a somber look befitting the traditional Durga puja at the mansions 'Thakur Dalan'.

I visited this place on the eve of Maha Sasthi to witness one of the oldest durga puja in kolkata. This puja was started by the Rani Rashmoni's father in law. Since then the tradition has been maintained by the descendants. Though the place is not properly maintained at all. They have made that place a parking lot which I found very disturbing. If I'm not wrong Sri Ramkrishna Thakur himself visited this place several times. So there is a nostalgia, culture, heritage associated with this bhawan. Here are some pictures that I took while visiting.

Rani Rashmonir Bonedi Bari Well, if you have visited the Dakshineswar Kali Mandir you already know who Rani Rashmoni was. Extremely beautiful she was born in a Shudra family in Halisahar, 24 Paraganas. She got married to a rich Zamindar Babu much older in age Rajachandra Das of Janbazar. At a very young age, she lost her husband and took over the charges of Zamindari and all finances, at a time when women were not given equal status in the society like men. Not only that she was brave enough to stand against the British and abolished tax imposed on fishing in the river Hoogly. She also raised her voice against child marriage and Sati along with Raja Ram Mohan Roy who was one of her husband's associates. Her various charity work for the poor and donations made to some of the popular libraries like the Imperial Library and Hindu College in Kolkata are really worth mentioning. Had the opportunity to visit her bro during Pujo and offer Pushpanjali... what a wholesome experience!

It is 308 years old durga puja established by Rani Rasmoni Devi. Here the face colour of devi durga is not yellowish but the color of the stem of a night blooming jasmine.

The most historical building of Central Kolkata. The descends of Lokmata Rani Rashmoni is still residing at the said premises. It's not a building rather it's a mansion. I have got an opportunity to visit and meet with one of Ranima's bloodline and I am overwhelmed by their gesture. There are also many birds in the mansion. There are lots of antic furniture in the house. May they carry the legacy for the future generations to see and to learn about Rani Rashmoni. But, as I came to know from reliable sources that a portion of the said mansion is occupied illegally by intruders. Government should take appropriate action against them.

Once a famous building a peace of history is now very unnoticed from every side, once pride is now covered by random private n commercial cars.

Place associated with memory of Rani Rashmoni, one othe greatest philanthropist of her time. However, the place is not well maintained. There are occupants, who have kept the place unclean. Should be preserved by government as a heritage place.

Very dirty inside that bhawan.. Authority should take some strict step to recover that historic importance of that bhaban.

She is known as Lokmata. She was born on 28th September, 1793 at Halishahar in North-24 Paraganas. Her father was Sri Harekrishna Das. Her mother was Smt Rampriya Devi. She was early married with Zamindar Rajachandra Das. After her husband's death she took the full charge of Zamindari. She established herself as a great administrator. Her motto was to serve mankind. She built the Historical Dakshineswar Kali Mata Mondir. She nominated Sri Ramakrishna as the Priest of Mother Goddess Kali. Here Sri Ramakrishna became Paramhansa. Swami Vivekanand and other great Gurubhai were associated with Dakshineswar Temple. The Dakshineswar Temple became one of the Holiest Hindu place in India. She constructed Babugaht, Nimtala ghat etc. She built a road from Subarnarekha to the Holi place Puri. She donated for the Imperial Library and Hindu College. She died on 19th February, 1861 in Calcutta.

An important part of Bengal's history, the building's state is shambolic and in need of maintenance. The bhawan houses multiple tenants who don't seem to bother about the importance of the building.
