Dear Customer. An update of Hawker Inn Restaurant. The new owner, John -took over this establishment, in December 2021, which was previously known as as " Peters Chinese Restaurant"* John originated Shanghai and has 20 years experience, in Asian cuisine. John's style of cooking, differ's vastly from the previous owners Hawker Inn, is trying to establish itself in the Bay Area, however, some customers still think that Hawker Inn is one and the same as Peters Chinese Restaurant, but we are not. Our menu is different, and slowly but surely, we are gaining a favourable response from old and new customer's. Thank you Hawker Inn Restaurant.

Peters Chinese is where it’s at. There is a pretty mixed bag of reviews on here. As a food fanatic, I have to say this place is fantastic and 100% would go back. The beef was great, veggies hit the spot, impeccable prawn crackers and tea was generous and hot. There’s some disparaging reviews on here re: decor and if you are after Chinese food in a setting fresh out of ‘Country Living’ magazine then you might want to try somewhere else. However, Peter’s Chinese is completely unique and refreshing with an eclectic selection of artwork, furniture, signage and plants alongside a delightful home garden. A true jewel. Thanks Peter and family.

Jun 2018. Typical no-frills cantonese home restaurant in a foreign country. For a health conscious person like me, i thought the dish were done right, not too oily nor salty. Although not offering Michelin starred palate, it would satisfy crave of Asian travellers who missed Chinese food.

Called to order take away right before closing time and our food was cooked fresh while we waited. The portions were very generous, very tasty and the chef was more than happy to give my girls a drink while we waited. Amazing service, awesome food. Will definitely be back. Thank you

We've had dinner at The Hawker Inn several time and have never been disappointed. The food is always delicious. Most recently we had the shallot pancakes and steamed dim sims followed by schezuan combination noodles. The garlic chilli basil sauce (I like it with chicken) is also great. It's not licenced which helps to keep prices down. There are 3 bottle shops nearby so that's not really a problem.

My partner and I were in Nelson Bay last weekend and he got the small curry prawns lunch special. He got extremely ill not long after and it derailed the plans for our weekend. Very disappointed.

Certainly a quirky little restaurant that seems to get some good reviews - so after many years visiting NB (25+) we decided to give it a go. Was a bit of fun but our experience was somewhat underwhelming. Service was pretty slow and if there’s a difference between Satay beef and Mongolian lamb then we couldn’t taste it which was odd. Yep, Honey Chicken was pretty good. Overall, prices are a little cheaper but not by much. We’d definitely rate other local Chinese restaurant options higher.

Coffee is ok. A half an hour wait for a takeaway is ridiculous. If it's going to be that long you need to let people know before ordering

Like stepping into the 1970’s cute Chinese couple cooking your food in the kitchen. Adorable. Looking for live tanks and spinning tables. Wrong place. Looking for a place open on a Monday night 🔥💥🙏Reminds me if the backstreets of Hong Kong 🇭🇰 I went back and edited to 5 star after I had the friend rice and short soup 🍜 good work guys 👍

4 of us went last night service was excellent and we really enjoyed the food especially the Sichuan combination with flat rice noodles its really cosy inside and the new owners have done a great job redesigning the decor. Also it is not licensed which means byo wine, spirits and beer which is a great saving we will definitely be going back

Cool looking place. Ok good. Over an hour after sitting down my partners meal came out. I had to go and ask where mine was. Apparently the chef was ‘cutting up the vegetables?’ Ummm ok? The place wasn’t even busy. $70 later for two ok meals (one was veg) and two soft drinks, they forgot the rice entirely. Won’t be back. What seemed to be the owner didn’t even apologise. It’s only a three because they had such cool decor

Waited 30 minutes for an OJ. They forgot about it. I didnt realise it was $9 and the girl said it came from a bottle. Pretty poor. My meal was yummy but a bit disappointing in the portions. My bread had a huge hole in it so couldn't even put avo on it anyway. My meal came with a small slice of avocado and when I asked for some more the girl said it would be $5. It would be good for chefs and waiters to look at the food before it comes out and check if it's okay. I doubt they would have wanted that meal if they were the customer.

Food was served hot and well-cooked. Honey chicken is crispy even after being slathered with honey while the meat in fillet steak is flavourful and easy to chew (you wouldn't believe how rubbery it is in other restos). Would defintely be back next time we're in the area.

Really nice restaurant, the interior had been recently updated (since the photos), such a wonderful vibe with piano music, plants and lovely art peices! The food was good, we had fried rice, beef in black bean and the chilli fish (fish was average). The menu needs to be updated as there's alot of dishes they no longer offer on their menu.

The Food at The Hawker Inn is sensational! Beautifully fresh with just the right amount of sauces. The portion sizes are large and the menu is varied with noodles, traditional Chinese favourites and a great selection of entrees and “Aussie” favourites. The staff are lovely, very friendly, but as it is a staff of two, be aware that during busy times service can be understandably slower. The dining room is gorgeously eclectic with a definite Hong Kong 1960’s vibe. We have been to the Hawker Inn a few times now including a party of 10 in the private dining room. Located upstairs above the cafe in Donald St, you’ll be really pleased you made the trip to Hawker Inn.

This is a great casual Asian food restaurant. The decor is a bit quirky, but the food is good and the servings are plentiful. BYO is accepted and generally easy to obtain, not too far away. We went with friends and all enjoyed the accompanying blues music. Can be busy around 6-8. Eat in or takeaway.

  • 5/5 Harry T. 1 year ago on Google
Absolutely delicious honey chicken/Mongolian lamb/fried rice. They had a new coffee machine out the front weighing shots in Vs out. Consistent coffee also delicious. Will be getting takeaway more often

Excellent quality food at a reasonable price. The quality is certainly a cut above the average country Chinese restaurant. We usually buy the Malaysian dishes here. The owner has supported local musicians with some excellent blues and jazz to be heard here. Nice decor too.

As a returning customer I am beyond disappointed in my experience tonight. Waited half an hour to have our order taken, the waitress ignored us and served multiple other tables that sat down after. My partner and I then waited an hour for only one dish to come out, after another 25 minutes and no sign of the other dish we walked out. The food is usually amazing, the tall gentleman that sat us down was lovely, but the incompetent older woman with the short choppy hair, honestly go and enjoy your retirement and stop making life harder for everybody else. How do you not realise you’ve taken a dish to the wrong table. No apologies, just complete ignorance.

  • 4/5 Jon L. 1 year ago on Google
The food was excellent, especially the honey chicken, sweet and sour chicken & fried rice. We didn't make a booking so had a fairly long wait, and we had to sit at a table in the courtyard. Staff were friendly and helpful, and we hope to be able to update the ratings after a return visit (with a booking this time).

What a marvelous find! Great atmosphere. So welcoming and comfortable! Excellent Peking duck and a broad menu that you can tailor to suit your taste buds/level of heat etc. A visitor to Nelson Bay, I loved sitting on the balcony under heaters and chatting to convivial locals. Also keen to dine inside next time as I spied a corner round table for 4-6 persons. Sublime and quirky decor. A plus that you can BYO wine. This place is the entire package! Thank you for a fine time :)

Came at an extremely busy time during the dinner rush, but was greeted by friendly staff and a lovely atmosphere. We ordered the laksa, sweet and sour pork, honey chicken, teriyaki noodle, and veggie omelette. All the food was great with good serving sizes, and there was complimentary prawn chips on the side. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone in the area looking for an asian food restaurant or just a nice meal.

Went to the Hawker inn last night for dinner. Booked online and it was very easy. We were running late for our booking as we drove up from Sydney and got caught in long weekend traffic. Rang to say we might be late. They said no problem your table is waiting for you. Greeted with a warm friendly smile. This is the second time here. The last time we came we love that it’s not your traditional Asian restaurant. It’s quirky and great decorating is inviting and you can’t stop looking around while waiting for your dinner. Now the food. It is the best Chinese food we have had in a long time! The best honey chicken we have ever had. Crunchy hot and tasty. The special fried rice full of flavour and not oily. Last time Mongolian beef. Not chewy and also full of flavour. Expert chef in the kitchen, takes pride in his work so be patient or take an extra bottle of wine! Enjoy 😊
