My fiancé's comment at the end of the meal pretty much sums up the entire experience: "If it were acceptable, I'd lick my plate clean right now." The view and ambience of this spot can not be beat and it's only matched by the outstanding food. We opted for the house specialities - grilled line fish, calamari and an incredible chicken and prawn curry - washed down with a number of selections from their brilliant cocktail and wine menu. Everything was faultless, including our service which came courtesy of a waiter who mentioned that he'd just recently joined the team. You'd hope that restaurant management has the good sense to retain his services because, like the rest of this experience, it was absolutely top notch.

A unique place to visit literally on the ocean and as the name indicates a cave! Sufficient service ok food and a great atmosphere One of those places that doesn't pretend to be something it isn't it!

Fantastic view, unique location, and delicious food. It is pricey but the portions are huge. The menu is mostly seafood but there are some chicken and veggie options too. Great spot for a memorable occasion. The fish & chips could probably be shared for ladies, much larger than a typical portion. Friendly staff and fast service. Free parking nearby.

5 stars even just for the view! Laura was great. Shared a seafood platter which was very nice. Unfortunately it was not crayfish season. Next time :) We even saw a whale in the bay swimming whilst we were there so that a bonus

Had an amazing lunch with my husband. We were seated in the corner of the rocks, and sometimes big waves came until our table. Felt a bit more like an attraction to keep our shoes dry but was very exciting! Wish it was a whale season! Definitely would visit again.

Stunning venue for our first lunch at Hermanus. Our table was right on the rocks, with a beautiful view of the bay. Food was delicious. My partner had the chicken burger and i had the seafood platter for one. We both wished the food wouldn't get finished. Our waitron, Kelling was a boss. So charming and friendly, a perfect compliment to a perfect lunch.

We were a group of 10 people who booked months in advance to be seated on the rocks, right next to the sea. We also received an email confirming our booking. Once we arrived, on time, the floor manager informed us, in no friendly manner, that she is not going to allocate a table next to the ocean, since there are other people who also booked tables in the same area. When we asked her what the reason is, she became very aggressive and would not answer our question, since she won't be challenged. She became very defensive when we showed her the email of confirmation, and said that no booking preferences are guaranteed. (So why book then?) There were numerous tables on the rocks that were still available, but she said she kept it open for people who booked in advance (like we did!) When we asked her what the difference was between 'other' guests and ourselves, she raised her voice (even more) and said that's how it is and the guests (who was still nowhere to be seen) will arrive later. There were another group from overseas (tour group) who had exactly the same experience as we had. The tour guide also booked well in advance, but to no avail. She didn't budge and we had to take a table on the deck. I've asked her the number of the owner, whereupon she gave me a mobile number. Upon verifying the number, it appeared that she gave me her mother's number. The waiters were very decent and helpful. The food, however, was not fresh and tasted dried out. The portions were also definitely rationed - it wasn't out first visit at the restaurant, so that's how we know. We were there for over an hour, and STILL there were unoccupied tables on the rocks. The floor manager doesn't do the restaurant any favor with her attitude and offensive behavior and is clearly not fit for the position. She refused to apologize for her aggressive behavior. I will definitely not visit Bientang again because of this bad experience and dried out food (fish). What a HUGE disappointment!

we have been to Fick‘s Pool Restaurant before this place. and it is quite similar: you should better just enjoy one or two drinks at this stunning location. the sea food is not fresh and therefor not tasty at all. rather go with some pasta if possible. there is a lot of parking space on top, but with a stroller almost impossible to go down- with wheelchairs definitely impossible.

An absolute must visit! I could literally have sat there all day...watching the waiters nimbly navigating the stairs on the multi-leveled terraces us almost as fascinating as watching the waves crash right at your feet! A beautiful beautiful setting - my husband's fish and calamari was excellent. I ordered the pork belly and explicitly asked the waiter if they have crackling - I was assured there was. My plate arrived without a bit of crackling and I queried the waiter who disappeared and the chef came and gave an explanation re the "sea air that doesn't allow the crackling to harden". Sounded like hogwash to me - I suggested he put the bit that goes with the pork portion into the airfryer but he told me he has no space in his kitchen for an a/f. The veggies could have done with another minute or 2's cooking. As I said...the location made me forgive & forget and I will go back without hesitation...I just won't order the pork belly🙃

Awesome venue!!!! Awesome food. A little pricey BUT You get what you pay for! Our portions were huge and the food was fantastic! Ee ordered the platter for 2 and best prawns and Calamari I've ever had! Right on the ocean! Can't get much better than this.

Amazing experience. The location and the views alone should be enough to take you here. A cave restaurant combined with a possible whale viewing venue, this is 1 of the only of its type in the world. The food was reasonably good, fittingly I had seafood and it was quite good, a bit expensive, but still a worthwhile experience.

Hands down the best seafood platter I have ever had in Western Cape! Amazing staff! Fantastic view of the ocean and watched some whales breach while enjoying my lunch and a nice bottle of white wine.

They have delicious food and a beautiful view. Staff extremely friendly and service absolutely great. I had the calamari, fried and chips with a garlic and butter sauce and that was so delicious. The calamari melted in your mouth which is perfect. The atmosphere is very calmly.

I have visited this place before and was always satisfied when done. That being said, it is pricy. This time around, i was somewhat disappointed with the food. The fish i ordered seems to have been frozen and thus did not have that nice texture of fresh fish. The calamari likewise did not have good texture and lack lustre flavour. The service was good and the venue is amazing. My issues on the day aside, i would highly recommend this place. Bring a full wallet. Acces to the place is via steep stairs, so wheel chair access is practically impossible.

amazing atmosphere and delicious food. staff very friendly. has 3 levels (lowest is on rocks few meters from the water surface) where you can sit and observe the ocean. if you lucky and in season, you can watch whales swimming by while eating dinner.

A stunning venue on the rocks...the venue is certainly unique as it is as close as you can get to the sea...the tables are even set on the rocks where the sea breaks...the path leading to the restaurant is also quite mystical...the views are lovely...

Mmm, this is a tough one, wish that 3.5 stars was an option as some aspects were great and others not so much... The prawns were great! Unique location and setting are truly something else, the hake though was quite soggy and not flakey, and the calamari and mussels were just ok. Service was decent but nothing special. Still worth a visit but not on par with what it used to be like a few years ago.

We went here for breakfast and found the location and the food to be really good! Having the ability to eat on the rocks right next to the ocean is something that is priceless. Service was great too, loved it.

MUST go when visiting Hermanus. This is a gem of a place - you sit on the rocks - close to the water. Wonderful food and great service! Recommend going for breakfast (that is what we did).

Absolutely stunning setting. Beautiful and delicious seafood. Staff extremely friendly. High chair available. No baby changing but staff made a make-shift area for us! Would recommend a visit. Need to pre book. Parking available. Steep steps to walk down.

Food was a bit average.. Honestly felt that we could have spent half less at ocean basket or spur for the same meals... The garlic butter sauce with prawns and rice were quite disapointing and somewhat tasteless, lacking some spice and flavour. My son's hamburger and chips on the otherhand was quite tasty and likely a better choice...

When looking for a restaurant I am looking for something that has good views, good food, and a good vibe this place had all of the above and more and it is one of the places that I will always visit when I come to Hermanus. This place is also one of the places that you can spot some whales during the season when they come onshore. I have spotted a calf whale 🐳 before when sitting here.

One of the most special places to enjoy a seafood dinner watching the sunset over the mountains in Hermanus. Food was great and service was excellent

One of two very scenic places to sit on the rocks of the sea shore and have your meal and or drinks while the whales swim by… it is like being in a story book of some kind… so nice and serene…

The view is amazing! Great tapas and friendly staff. If you're visiting Hermanus, stopping here is a must.

Really enjoyed our visit here. The staff were friendly and helpful and the food was delicious. It was also super exciting to be able to sit on the rocks and be so close to the waves while enjoying our lunch. Definitely no other restaurants we’ve been to has this type of experience, not even in Cape Town. Really enjoyed it and hope to visit again soon.
