The Whale trail is a spectacular hiking trail with great variety. From Cape Vultures to Humpback Whales. From the most detailed fynbos to gorgeous sunsets. The huts are fully equipped, kept clean and stocked well. The slack packing option allows you to eat like a king and carry light each day. 6 stars

A world class destination with well maintained amenities. The Bites beach cafe has a good selection of well priced meals with an out of this world whale sighting experience. There is a bit of a walk from the parking down to the cafe, but this is on a well paved dual track. This is accessible on an assisted wheelchair. The game viewing is authentic and unique, with loads of diversity in fauna and flora. Bring binoculars or a camera.

A truly special place! We thoroughly enjoyed watching the baby ostriches right in front of our cottage and seeing the whales while we enjoyed a picnic on the white dunes. This is based on our last visit, each time offers a unique experience and wonderful memories.

Beautiful Nature Reserve. I went there to install an artwork at their exhibition and I really enjoyed the Nature, the farm and restaurant and the animals I saw on the way and in the nature reserve.

The reserve is very special. The entrance fee compared to other tourist attractions is very low and you get many different great impressions for it. We stayed only one day and spent the night in Swellendam.

Situated in De Hoop Nature Reserve near the southern tip of Africa, Lekkerwater is a magnificent beach lodge. Just over three hours’ drive from Cape Town, it offers a unique, all-inclusive coastal escape on a six-kilometre stretch of private beach. In the winter season, this spot boasts some of the finest shore-based whale watching on the planet. In fact, Time magazine recently named Lekkerwater one of the world’s top 100 must-visit destinations. Wow. Just Wow. The view in the deeper parts of the reserve is great! You have to go to the dunes when you are here. Also you have to make a drive around the area to see all the different animals here. I‘d recommend staying here for longer than just making a daytrip. Take your time and stay 1-2 Nights there is a lot to explore and very long walkways. Just beautiful!

The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. There are lots of animals close to the accomodation which provided a lot of entertainment. The restaurant area is very cosy and the food was very tasty. The restaurant also has a beautiful view over the water, especially during sunsets. There could be more signs for the red walking route, and just note that its not that easy walk for elderly people.

This is a very special place. There is so much water in the estuary. I've never seen it this full. The eland have multiplied and the beach is as beautiful as ever. Even though completely untouched you can see how our oceans are being polluted by plastic waste. Fantastic spot for a mountain bike ride and trail run too.

The Whale Trail is an experience that belongs on every bucket list. The views at De Hoop are breath taking. Photos cannot do them justice. The accommodation on the trail is spectacular for a hiking trail, but obviously in the context of a hiking trail. Each unit is fully equipped with 6 bunk beds, comfortable for 12 adults. Make sure you get to Noetsie early to enjoy the day there. For the seaside part of the route we saw whales, dolphins and seals daily. Such a special experience. Always make sure you have enough water and sunscreen en route as there is minimal shade on the hike. The reserve itself is an extremely special place, well looked after and respected by all hikers.

Stunning nature reserve, we enjoyed viewing game and walking on the beach. The gate for the hikes does close earlier than the main gate, 16h00 verses 18h00 as I recall. Worth getting an early start if you plan to spend time walking. We were there as day visitors, but would love to return for an overnight stay.

De Hoop includes remarkable landscapes, up-close animal experiences, diverse ecologies including rich, strange marine worlds, and historical buildings and presence. To top this all is knowledgeable helpful staff and guides, good mountainbike and hiking routes, and a lovely restaurant. It was my 4th visit, and only gets better.

De Hoop Nature Reserve, with it's unique combination of pristine fynbos vegetation, abundant vlei, coastal and aquatic wildlife, with activities including hiking trails and guided marine walks, bird walks, eco boat cruises, nature drives and mountain biking. Ask for the exceptionally knowledgeable Dylan as guide to your guided marine and bird walks.

Visiting the De Hoop was a delightful experience....we thorougly enjoyed the the Bites Café with its lovely vibe, stylish decor, ocean view, friendly staff and delicious lunch. It was a sunny afternoon gazing at the ocean and relaxing... a decadent slice of chocolate cake and coffee perfectly concluded our visit.

Magnificent place. Spend aroud a hour on dirt road from N2 to ger here - totally worth it! Everybody talking about its waterways, but for us it was all about dunes. White dunes just near deep blue ocean - wow! Dunes easily accessable by foot from parking (ask directions at park gate). Park gate close at 6 pm

Amazing views. Note the long drive in and around the park. I would advise to plan your day accordingly! There are gorgeous sand dunes, expanding water views as well scenic sprawling grasslands with a mix of animals. Wish we had more time to enjoy and spend exploring!

Second time visiting here. I’ll say it’s beautiful but the second time coming didn’t have that wow effect I had initially. I’ll suggest maybe they should install ventilator in the rooms cuz when it’s really hot, the rooms are way too hot. For us it’s a bit overpriced for such accommodation but the staffs are very very nice and friendly. Greetings to the restaurant team. Great job guys Instagram @styledbyjeo

One of the best nature reserves I have been to in a long time! Great views, wonderful beaches, calm animals (eland, bontebok, zebra, ostrich, baboon, small mammals, birds galore, pristine fynbos) wonderful swimming & whale watching. Restaurant or picnic area. Well signposted. Accommodation too, if you want to stay over.

  • 5/5 Enid S. 3 years ago on Google
Beautiful Cape Nature Reserve abundant with flora and fauna as well as marine life. We stayed at the De Hoop Collection and was sy fortunate to thoroughly enjoy the reserve. We saw Zebra, Bontebok, Eland, Ostrich, Baboons, Grey Rhebok. The vlei was dotted pink with flamingos due to the low water levels. We were there early October 2020. There road from Bredasdorp was in terrible condition with several huge potholes and worse because it was raining heavily. If you can rather take the route via Swellendam - it is also gravel road but in much better condition and it is a, pretty countryside drive.

  • 5/5 Lizzie W. 3 years ago on Google
This reserve feels completely untouched with a very healthy bird, buck, and plant life. The camping is comfortable, with clean bathrooms and even a small communal kitchen. There is also a lovely restaurant and bar.

  • 5/5 Gareth R. 3 years ago on Google

👍👍 I initially wondered what would be special about visiting the Southern tip of Africa, but I shouldn't have.
