I have been fortunate enough to have visited quite a few of the national parks in South Africa, and although I've driven past the Bontebok National Park on numerous occasions I have only recently visit it for the first time. I can honestly say that taking so long to visit them was a big mistake on my part. This national park is truly a hidden gem and as it is only 2.5hours away from Cape Town it should be something on your to do list. As you arrive at the reception area you already get a glimpse of what the park has to offer. The beautiful building blends in well with its surroundings and the staff are friendly and welcoming. The park also has a a picnic site where you can go and relax, with a children's play area and "braai" (BBQ) facilities, but unfortunately there isn't a shop available for you to buy snacks etc. Except for the beautiful fauna and flora, the Lang Elsie's Kraal Rest Camp (reviewed separately) is probably the main attraction with clean, modern facilities and different accommodation types available. I was also happy to see that the staff at the rest camp were just as friendly as their peers at the reception area. There are a couple of routes available for you to go on self-drive game drives with most of the roads easily traversable in a standard sedan or hatchback, and there are even a couple of hiking trails. While we visited we saw numerous different animals, including different antelope species such as Bontebok which the park is named after. Some of the Bontebok even came into the camp which was very special. We had a great time staying here and will definitely make a plan to visit again in the future. One important thing to note if you plan on visiting: When you use Google Maps to drive to the park, rather set your location as "Bontebok National Park Reception" as going to the park's actual location takes you through farm lands and to an area from where you can't actually enter the park.

Such a great experience every time! 3 hours from Cape Town. Very comfortable beds and love the sound of the Breede River so close by.

Excellent! If you bother to take the time to read about the reason for this park, you will understand, don't come here if you want enormous variety of big wildlife. It was created to protect Bontebok, and those you will see right by your tent. But if you take the time to do a hike, and really look around you, even on the ground, there is so much to see. Wildlife is not just the big animals. Small plants and birds too! And the view of the Breede river was breathtaking The camp site is just amazing. Excellent ablution and scullery facilities. Super clean. Beautiful grassed camp sites. So quiet, so peaceful. Saw people give one star because there is "nothing to do". For me, that is why I go. This is true relaxation. Highly recommended if you go for the right reasons.

Absolutely beautiful place. We went as day visitors and enjoyed every moment. Next time I want to go for a weekend and do all the activities like hiking and mountain biking.

Struggled to make contact to book. We stayed at the beautiful river site. This sites does not have electricity or tap water. But are worth the while. Just keep bicycles, children and inflatable mattresses away, as the whole lawn is scattered with invisible bull thorns. No bare feet here. The river is also slowly eroding this campsite away. It does not seems that management here knows what to do or cares about it. The wildlife in the park can be disappointing to visitors expecting hordes of animals. This park is more about the river and the vegetation experience than just animals. Still worth a visit.

This beautiful place is yet undiscovered I think. Our first time here and really happy we decided to do a detour. Stayed only 2 days, but wished it was more.... The campsites are huge, covered with flowers and magestic flowering aloes. Amazing walking trails. Bontebok roaming in camp. Another huge list of new birds added to our list included the Fish eagle! We will be back for sure!!

What Bontebok makes such a charming park is their many activities. Beside canoeing and mountain biking, there are fishing spots as well. One can chose for several nice walking trails or have a swim in the beautiful Breederiver at the rest camp. The camping is beautiful with lots of shade; ablutions are neat and clean. And so much privacy on the camping sites, that you feel at home right away. This all makes a stay in the Park a wonderful experience and makes you come back every time again. However, we wonder what happened with the cellphone coverage (MTN) esp. data, the last 2 times (March and May 2022) we were there, we had hardly any connection. Hopefully, it can be fixed!?

A piece of wilderness just off the N2. Camping and cabins with spotlessly clean ablutions, washing machines and cooking facilities. We camped off grid right by the river but there are also on grid sites too. We did a couple of lovely walks and a game drive which included zebra, bontebok, grysbok and Denham’s bustard. We swam in the river and you can also find places to fish. Marloth nature reserve and it’s beautiful waterfall hikes are close by as is Swellendam and it’s historical museums. Two nights wasn’t enough.

Bontebok is a lovely reserve. We did not see all that many animals, but plenty of plant and birdlife. A good way to spend a few hours if you are visiting Swellendam.

The best campsites are next to the river, unfortunately they are still repairing flood damages .. We slept at the top campsites with electricity but no view, though countless animals did wonder through the campsites. I like this place, will see me very often l.

We stayed 2 nights in a chalet in the rest camp along Lang Elsies. We had a beautiful view of the river. The rest camp has chalets as, well as camping and caravan facilities. We were expecting to see a, lot more game as it is a small reserve. We did spot a, few Bontebok and also the Red Hartebeest. The chalet is very basic but beds and pillows very comfortable. You must take all your supplies with you as there are no shops at all on the reserve. Swellendam town is very close to the reserve, about 5km from the main gate. Very lovely trails, we particularly enjoyed the Bushbuck Trail. The picnic area at Die Stroom is beautiful with grassy areas and facilities to braai. Swimming is allowed at a designated area.

Beyond what we expected - Beautiful birdlife like Malachite sunbird, Cape Sugarbirds and raptors. Also besides the Bontebok, Rooi Hartebees and smaller mammals like Kaapse Grysbok. Thank you for keeping our beautiful renosterveld safe!

Lang Elsies Kraal has great accomodation. The chalets are clean, quiet, and has the necessities. You have a view of the river, the mountains, and the rest of the landscape. The staff is really friendly. The "normal" and the "4x4" self game driver were spectacular. Note: the chalets are self catering. There is no shop. All the consumable you need, you will have to bring with you.

We attended a wedding at the Park and it was amazing. Brought the kayak along and spent hours on the river with it after which we went on the various hiking trails. The ablusions were very clean and always neat. We will definitely consider coming back one day.

We like it. Staff at reception are very friendly. Lots of fynbos and very green, beautiful view over the mountains. You don't see much Bontebok's though, some Zebra's. The Elsie's Kraal accommodation (overnight) is beautiful. Bontebok's are moving between the houses. It gives a very peaceful atmosphere. The houses have a view over the river. Try house 6 for best views

Camped here for new years. Great facilities and plots, just a pity the river sites were unavailable after some recent flooding. Several decent running/walking routes around the park where we saw bontebok, red hartebeest and zebra, but it was the sand fleas that got our legs proper.

It’s a nice small National Park. We did a small hike (loop) and the self game drive. You can see some Red Hartebeest and we saw 2 or 3 Bonteboks (seems they aren’t easy to spot). Quite some tortoises. Enjoyed the views.

What a beautiful place and the bathrooms are super clean. The only bad thing is the contractors that stayed there. The receptionist did not mention it when we arrived. We were very disappointed because they played loud music and we could hear them braking off branches to use for fire wood. They charged their cellphones in the kitchen so we could not used the facility.I do not know why contractors stay in a camping facility for families. Please ask the receptionist when you make a booking if there are contractors staying there. When we complained when checking out she mentioned that a lot of campers were unlucky about this.

Nice Park with opportunities to go for walks or mountain bike rides unaccompanied as there are no dangerous predators around. Also, a great day visitor area on the Breede River and an area where you can fish in the river. Friendly staff. Unfortunately, there is not much game, or they are hiding away extremely well. In the whole Bontebok Park on the day of our visit we saw a total of 3 Bontebok. The most common animal we saw was Mountain Zebra.

(Translated by Google) You can do it if you have a lot of time. Very nice landscape. It's a shame that as a day guest you are not allowed to go to the camp. There is said to be a pretty place on the river. Of course, seeing animals is a matter of luck (Original) Kann man machen wenn man viel Zeit hat. Landschaftlich ganz nett. Schade, dass man als Tagesgast nicht in das Camp fahren darf. Dort soll es einen hübschen Ort am Fluss geben. Tiere zu sehen ist natürlich Glückssache

A lovely park on the banks of the mighty Breede River. Quite thick vegetation in parts but plenty of Bontebok and birds. No information on the park or bird list at present. Hopefully this will be available in due course and will add to the enjoyment of the park. Lovely walks, well marked. Very good chalet with a lovely view. Clean and well appointed. Will go again with more time.

  • 5/5 Claire D. 3 years ago on Google
Excellent staff service, the reception team was a real asset! Beautifully clean and maintained showers, toliet and shared kitchen facilities. Clean and with sensor lights (perfect for those dark mid night toliet visits!) Top tip: if you don't have a caravan and don't need electricity, the River Camping option is more secluded and quiet than the top part for caravans. So if you are after peace, it's a small sacrifice for electricity and you are close to the river for swimming! Great spot, we'll be back for sure.

  • 3/5 Sabine R. 3 years ago on Google
(Translated by Google) It's nice but nothing special compared to other national parks. There are not many animals to be seen there, except of course a few colorful goats. (Original) Ist ganz nett aber im Vergleich zu anderen Nationalparks nichts besonderes. Viele Tiere bekommt man dort nicht zu sehen, außer natürlich einigen wenigen Buntböcken.

This is where you go to relax in the quiet beauty of nature on the banks of the Breede River. Camping spots are large and well grassed with sufficient shade for summer camping. Chalets are well laid out and have everything you would require for an enjoyable and comfortable stay. All accommodation is kept well maintained and clean by a friendly and efficient staff. Not a great variety of animals but one finds the most beautiful and varied flowers and other indigenous plantlife.

Getting in touch with nature. Loved the sounds of birds. And watching the bokke going about their business, from a distance of course. It was fun trying to find all the fauna on their list. Didn't tick off everything so will need to go back.
