I've always liked this gallery. It has big open spaces to wander around but isn't so massive that it takes hours to see everything. There is a great mix of amazing classic art by some big names and more modern art. There are also some interactive parts for children to enjoy. And it's free to visit! The cafe is good and the building itself is impressive. There is wheelchair access and there are baby changing facilities in the toilets. Transport is probably easiest by tram (a 2 minute walk to St Peter's Square) or bus (Piccadilly Gardens a couple of minutes walk).

View @ Manchester Art Gallery. . With about 25,000 objects in its collection since 1827, the artwork in this museum spans paintings, sculptures, miniatures, drawings, photographs, furniture, glass, and fashion. . Featured works include those by artists such as Laurence Stephen Lowry, Thomas Gainsborough, and Joshua Reynolds. . As the building undergoes renewal, thoughts on how art evolves are being explored. Very impressed with the collection, worth visiting.

A great museum with a little bit of everything. I appreciate that they were trying to do things a bit differently with their acknowledgement that old white men were the only viewpoints reflected in the travel gallery, and their exhibit on the female vocation in Manchester. They also had fun themed gallery's like men's fashion and tea. Also, it is free. You can see everything in 2 hours or less. Nice gift shop as well.

Very interesting art pieces. The artwork ranged from early 17th century to modern abstract, paintings and sculptures. There were also a few clothing pieces by artist in the area. It was also very busy when I went and it was filled with people varying of all ages but mostly younger people.

The standard collection here is worth the visit always but they had a menswear fashion exhibition on at the time which was great, looking at the history of men's tailoring and dressing. The shop in here has some great bits to purchase or just look through, with the cafe doing some normally priced treats and lunchtime specials. You could easily spend an hour

My memory from years ago was of a good gallery with many wonderful artworks. Today I found it so much more enriching...even greater variety of things to enjoy, imaginative presentation. Loved the sculpture. Thanks

What an incredible gem! The designers' exhibition had me in awe, rethinking my entire style game. The Netherlands' paintwork was a breathtaking journey through artistry. The fusion of modern engineering and historical charm felt like stepping into a time-traveling wonderland. Hold onto your hats – the gift shop is a goldmine! Local artists have their masterpieces up for grabs, turning it into a vibrant gallery of talent. The coffee shop? While not visited this trip appears to be a divine haven for caffeine enthusiasts. This place is a symphony of creativity and culture – a must-visit for everyone, from families to solo explorers. Highly recommend soaking in this artistic feast!

A must-stop on any visit to Manchester. This central gallery has a great selection of modern, classic and alternative pieces of art. Their shop is also worth getting lost in.

Great experience at the Art Gallery in Manchester. There were lots of different rooms and expositions. There was a fashion one that included an area where you could sketch a mannequin. The paintings were all beautiful in their own unique way.

It was a well kempt museum with a lot of intresting facts displayed about the artworks presented in an easy to find and conveniently spot next to each piece. I really enjoyed my most recent visit here and will go again soon! There is so much to see and learn there about our cities history contained in the paintings themselves. Such a great experience for all ages I'd say with refreshments on sale in their café not far from the entrance. Really great atmosphere!

Surprisingly very good. Classic and modern, small and big, historic and mythological, it’s all there waiting to be discovered. Every item has a story to tell and some of them are amazing so it deserves a minute or two besides just the look.

Stunning piece of historic architecture right in the city centre just off St. Peter's Square. Always running local, regional and national exhibitions. Very community focused. Loads of loo facilities and a great café for food & drinks too. Free to everyone and a brilliant Manchester City community facility.

Considering this place is free to enter I don't have a bad word to say. Stunning building and I'm not usually one for art galleries but I feel there's something for everyone here. There is also a cafe and gift shop inside. Staff were approachable but not in your face and it wasn't too 'uppity' which is definitely something that is a concern when going to venues like this at least for me.

Worth visiting once or twice to really look through the artwork. Could spend 2 or 3 hours inside as there are quite a lot of sections. Particularly enjoyed Lowry's section.

We only had about an hour to spare, but managed to swoop around most of the gallery. There are some great pieces in here, especially the Pre-Raphaelite ones. The only negative is that the postcard for Hylas and the Nymphs was sold out! I like to collect postcards from everywhere I visit, and the painting was the reason I even thought about going to the gallery, but it seems many other people agree! There were a plethora of other excellent paintings to choose from though, so I didn't go home empty handed. Galleries and museums that are free are so important, go to them all!

Very enjoyable & insightful visit. Fashion, art, drinking instruments, paintings, industrialisation. Critique on climate action & the role the British empire played in massively contributing to this through their colonisation & imperialist strategies of the past. Resulting today in a catastrophic biodiversity & climate crisis. Excellent. Do visit. Become sustainably minded. Donate.

Excellent in all ways; the cafe, the exhibits, the paintings, the staff. We joined a free tour by Anne, one of their volunteers, who was very knowledgeable and informed us about some lesser known artists. The cafe is clean, well except for the glasses which had lipstick stains on the 3 to 4 that I picked up. It was very reasonabley priced at just over £5 for 2 coffees. The art work was great with some famous artists such as; Hogarth, Turner, Blake, Lowry, Valette, Rossetti, Hepworth & Stubbs to name just a few. Their was a fashion exhibition on at the time which had some classic styles from; Dior, Versace, McQueen, Westwood plus many more. Well worth a visit.

A good place to pass the time while in the city. Free entry and there's loads to see. I really liked the room to breathe, a nice place to sit and contemplate. Also, it's really cool that the gallery has a prayer room.

Such an interesting place, the galleries are not arranged in the usual way but, at least on the first floor, thematically. The exhibition featuring sculpture was displayed as though it was either in storage or just being removed form storage. It was a novel idea, but didn't really allow the pieces to be displayed in a way that let one really appreciate them. The display of couture items, however, was top shelf. One thing I did find very off-putting was the fact that many of the paintings were glass covered. This wouldn't have been so bad if the glass were non-reflective, but it wasn't and as a result one could see the reflection of other objects in the room, even people in the gallery. Sone art was actually invisible for all intents and purposes. Very disappointing. In one of the galleries, there was a wall of video screens displaying performance art that was fascinating. One could spend hours taking it all in. Highly recommended.

This is a superb free venue right in the centre of Manchester. Whether you want to spend a whole afternoon or just have a stroll during your lunch break, this place will regenerate your soul, tickle your curiosity, and restore your confidence in the ability of the human race to create beauty. Inside the museum, created inside the brilliant Greek revival building designed by Charles Barry for the Royal Manchester Institution ( a marvel in its own right), you can find it all: from Corinthian oinochoes and Attic craters down to cutting edge pieces of design and fashion, through art collections built in the 18th and 19th century. The display is cleverly arranged to spark questions and engage the visitor, and the staff is extremely helpful, passionate, and knowledgeable (I'm looking at you, Patrick!). Just get in, folks; you really have nothing to lose.

I spotted it on Google Maps and decided to give it a try, and I am very glad I did. The building is a beautiful combination between the old and the new. I particularly loved the way they expressed a desire to source more artefacts from outside the UK and highlighting when artefacts were imitating styles from non-European countries. The Cold Cases sculpture exhibit was a great and insightful project, too.

Great galleries. I saw the ones on dandies and male fashion as well as how tea, coffee, chocolate and alcohol have become addictive British drinks. This gallery celebrates how the more well to do enjoyed such beverages in some lovely porcelain cups and teapots. My favourite is the beautifully detailed illustrated depiction of the process of making tea on an ivory tusk. Its unethical but that aside, the craftsmanship is absolutely had me mesmerised. You can see people and animals carved in tiny forms on the ivory tusk. Sadly, the lighting did not allow for fabulous photo. The gallery on male dandy fashions through the ages to current times is equally fascinating. This was a wonderful spontaneous stumble.

Absolutely loved the curating of this museum, full of relevant, thought-provoking reflections on current-day issues that have originated in our past. I loved that there is a lot of challenging of the colonial and patriarchal view of things, giving space to new thinking and therefore new artists who thankfully show us new ways of viewing society, bodies and more. I also loved the breathing rooms, where you can relax more in viewing the art, all based on mindfulness practices. Well done Manchester Art Gallery! I am so pleased I took the time to visit.

Great overall experience, also very helpful employees. But I was a bit disappointed with colours of the walls. They were very saturated so it changed a bit the perspective of perceiving paintings and I would prefer them to be black or white.

Visited the art gallery for the first time and had a good time. The main reason for the visit was to see the Grayson Perry Art Club exhibition which was a joy, but the rest of the gallery is worth a look too. Great staff, good cafe and a well stocked gift shop.

Went to the Grayson Perry Exhibition. An excellent, thought provoking event that both made me laugh and cry. Well done to Manchester Art Gallery for putting on the exhibition and my thanks to Grayson Perry for arranging such a project and allowing the exhibitors to be the main focus. If you are in Manchester do yourself a favour and go to see this exhibition. I left with a feeling of hope from the despair we have all shared.

Hmmmm... really disappointed with this art gallery. Maybe expectations were far too big but we tried enjoyed it anyway. Afraid that exposition was in kind of mess and we wanted to find some order but might be us, maybe there is no order in art. So please don't follow our review and go, make your own opinion please.

The gallery has some nice collections, although not too big. It has lockers that you can use by using a £1 coin. There's a nice cafe and shop as well. Conveniently located in the busy city centre, near the Chinatown.

Gallery is really nice, with some beautiful paintings :) is easy to access all floors with pushchair. Collection of paintings is quite impressive for such a small place! There is only one huge minus... If you go here with baby.. Baby changing facilities are so hardly accessible that you have to leave pushchair at corridor and walk with baby only.)( ladies toilet I mean, mens toilet with baby chaing facilities is OK) But exept that is just great!

What a lovely gallery! Free entry and some very interesting exhibits…paintings, sculptures, practical experiences too and I also spotted some kind of art discussion group in flow. It’s very well set out, with an atrium area connecting two buildings. Nice shop and the cafe seemed reasonable. Need to come back again as we didn’t see it all.

I’ve always loved this gallery. The exhibitions and art on display are so varied with modern art and sculptures and older permanent pieces that I recognise each visit. The staff are always friendly and best of all it’s FREE!

Excellent exhibition on related to people's experience of the lockdowns. The booking system ensured that there were not too many people in the room so it was nice to walk around and look at the artwork. The building is really beautiful and inviting and the staff welcoming and informal, which can make a difference if "grand" places like a gallery make you feel self conscious.

Really beautiful architecture and lovely mix of contemporary and classic artwork. Also has lovely pieces made by women that I didn't know about. Some pieces are made to be observed and really taken in. There was no rush and lovely staff. Has nice cafe too with wheelchair access to a certain point.

The best place in Manchester to spend at least two meaningful hours, among the permanent and contemporary exhibition. The variety is so great that you will definitely find something that speaks to your heart. Allow for enough time to enjoy a quick bite at the café and browsing the gift shop. Suitable for all ages!

A fabulous art gallery spread across the original Old building with a new part integrated into it, with multiple and diverse galleries. At the time of our visit the exhibition on Dandy Fashion had just opened and seeing some classic works of art by Dutch Masters and works by Rosetti and Lowry was fabulous. We only had a couple of hours to spare so couldn't see all the galleries during our visit but it left me wanting to return and see more.
