A nice place to spend time and learn. It is not too big but its a free admission so what else should one expect. Very well managed, clean and tidy. It takes you in the leap of time….. I literally stood at every picture and vehicle and imagined how would it be in those days…. It must be so hard to travel and now it has become so convenient…. Everything was explained very well. Some of the instruments were not working and perhaps need maintenance or maybe was due to COVID-19. Like I said earlier that not a big place but has enough in it and worth a visit. Sometimes they do organize events so worth looking at website but the admissions aren’t free during events. Parking was also free inside the museum so it was all freebie which is a rare in U.K.

A lovely little Museum. Been done up well (Its way better than Manchester one!) You can spend a good hour here, especially good considering it's free to visit. Lots of stuff to see and do. And good fun for kids. It's worth combining a trip on the steam train next door... Or using this place to wait for the train.

Came here for a little thing to do on a day off from work. SatNav took us straight to the place and was easy enough to find. The museum itself wasn't as big as I was expecting for a transport museum, but hey, it's free parking, free admission and ran by volunteers. The exhibits that they do have though are great to look at and still receive the full 5 star rating from myself

We've visited several times including as part of a trip on the East Lancs steam railway. It's a medium-sized museum but seems to have lost some of the vehicles that were previously on display. There are some interactive parts for little ones but it would benefit from much more. You can get on one of the classic buses and there's the opportunity to sit behind the wheel of a bus cab. Parking is free on site and there is cheap on-road parking a short walk away on the road if this is full (the car park was actually very quiet though on our recent Sunday visit). If you are looking for other transport based museums with kids, the British Commercial Vehicke museum in Leyland and the transport museum in Cheetham Hill are similar but bigger.

I would give this place an 11 if I could. Excellent exhibits. Excellent staff. Very knowledgeable. They're the ones who have done the restoration work on many of the exhibits and it shows.

A fabulous day out with Thomas & Friends where you make a stop at the Bury Transport Museum. If you pre book tickets for Thomas and friends, they provide entertainment for the children at the museum. We were able to sit on all the old vehicles, trucks, buses etc - a fabulous experience. They also provided entertainment such as entertainment from rusty and dusty the station sweepers, a magician, free face painting, free balloon animal making and free rides for the children -an absolute bonus. The East Lancs Railway is a few minute walk away. For those with prams and buggys, there are walkway signs to provide easy comfortable access. I recommend booking Thomas & friends railway experience for the fun family experience at The Bury Transport Musesum. Children are provided with stickers and colouring on the train before heading out to the museum. 10/10 experience and a great museum.

Kids had a great time. The old vehicles are really interesting to see and in excellent condition. Some of the interactive pieces have aged a bit and missing some pieces, also looking a bit tired. Staff were very friendly.

Great little museum full of wonderful exhibits.

I would visit this little museum again when I next visit Bury as it's great to look back on all the old style buses and trains along with steam rollers and alike not forgetting old vintage cars and fire engines. It's easy to find, park up for free and enter without getting out some cash unless you would like to leave a much welcomed donation which does help to maintain the high standards they have for all the vehicles on show of which you can step on and take a sit in the drivers seat. Every vehicle has an information board explaining all sorts of interesting facts, there's plenty to take photos of and I'm sure your children would love to see the trains etc that used to run before they were born with other exhibitions to look at. Definitely a place to come and visit if only once if in the area and like I mentioned earlier it's free! Wheelchair accessible which is a plus now that I am.

Visited the museum as part of our Santa Special experience with our 5 year old grandson. Grandpa enjoyed all the exhibits & we all appreciated the extra effort the staff made to make it an enjoyable family experience. Grandson especially enjoyed the Christmas Treasure Trail. Appreciated the safe, contained environment of the "just right" size of the site!

Fantastic place. I was right back in time wearing my gabardine coat, satchel on my back, one sock up one down, scuffed shoes. My mum, young and lovely as ever, hair do and outfit of the time running down the isle ready to rugby tackle me before I let go of the bus pole. Cherished memories.

Well maintained little transport museum you can pass an hour in. Some lovely exhibits; parking wasn't a problem, and free entry with a donations box to give as you feel for the upkeep of the place, and vehicles.

Fab little museum with a great variety of vehicles, plus interactive displays and multiple TV screens which show the vehicles in action. The entrance is just opposite East Lancs Railway, through the carpark and down a cobbled path.

  • 5/5 Matthew T. 2 years ago on Google
Great place to look back and be nostalgic whether you're in your 30's or 70's. The kids loved the Christmas hunt and the miniature railway was brilliant. Just ask a member of staff to get the trains moving. Make sure you make a donation as the entrance is FOC. Perfect way for us to finish off our Santa Train at the ELR! 😁🎅🎄

  • 5/5 Cassi S. 2 years ago on Google
Great place to spend a couple of hours! My 2 year old loved it, being able to go on some of the exhibitions and having postman pat next to a post van really made his day. Plenty of parking on site and building is fully accessible.

  • 5/5 Ian H. 2 years ago on Google
Brilliant! Really enjoyed our recent visit here. Excellent varied exhibits, some of which you can board. Fire engine, steam engines, coach, lorries etc. Plus lots of room to wander round under cover. Friendly volunteers. Free to enter though we donated. Highly recommended, they deserve to do well.

Very good museum plenty of interactive items. No cafe but east lancs just over the road

  • 4/5 Barry W. 1 year ago on Google
Small but perfectly formed would be a good way of describing this place I think. Hidden gem would be another. Its certainly very informative with some interesting information and exhibits. A few of which you can get a closer look at. Wheel chairs may struggle on the ground floor. (Rubber matting over cobble stones). Definitely worth a quick visit if you're in bury and enjoy transport history.

  • 5/5 Alex O. 1 year ago on Google
Small but informative. Shame that couple of the pieces were not able to go in but completely understand renovations. Kids loved it and would happily go again. Easy to get lost for a couple hours looking at the vehicles and the info.

  • 5/5 Yvonne C. 1 year ago on Google
A fair amount of people there, but not too busy. We went especially to see Union of South Africa, and were not disappointed with the set up. My son has seen her in steam and ridden behind her many times, but loved being able to get into the cab - especially the driver's cap! We didn't realise that turn the brake wheel actually moved things outside too (something moved. Not really technical here....) We also loved the film about the working of the goods shed - very cleverly done.

  • 5/5 Mark A. 1 year ago on Google
Really enjoyable visit. Grandson captivated by vehicles he could climb on and 'drive'. Good range of restored transport vehicles from British history with many interactive exhibits with buttons to press! The Union of South Africa train most impressive.

Meeting Bluey was great for my son but not having any steam trains running was a real disappointment, taking a diesel train wasn’t much different than any at home so in the end we didn’t bother. Makes the £50 for the 3 of us to meet bluey a bit expensive!

Interesting place to spend half an hour but compared to the Transport museum in Cheetam Hill I felt like it was lacking in terms of the number of exhibits

I attended the family event Hey Duggee with my grandson, granddaughter and daughter. What a lovely day we had! Staff are so friendly and helpful. The kids loved the old buses that they could get in. There was face painting, little fairground rides, small petting farm and a food stand. Then a train ride of our choice, amazing value. The kids absolutely loved it and I'm already planning our next visit.

  • 5/5 Ash T (. 7 months ago on Google
Brilliant day out. The train station staff were absolutely fantastic, the kids loved Thomas the Tank engine and the train ride. Parking is a bit tight but the spill over car park was more than adequate and the staff directed us in. The only thing I will say is the carnival staff at the museum were very strange and not very attentive of the kids on the rides.

  • 4/5 Nasrin M. 3 years ago on Google
My sons and husband loved it i found it a little boring after 10 minutes but was good as included in the train ticket prices we bought it brought back some memories when i was younger seeing some of the old coaches

Stumbled on the museum when we were going on the East Lancs Train. Brilliant place! Lots of exhibits in pristine condition. Truly a labour of love restoring the vehicles. Lots of info and memorabilia. Lovely, helpful, dedicated members of staff on hand to ask questions. If you go at this time of year make sure you put on your big coat!! Will be back soon with grandchildren.

Had really great day with three of my grandchildren We all enjoyed seeing and reading the history of the buses. The staff are all very pleasant and helpful and also willing to tell the history of the different buses. Lovely little cafe and very cheap. The shop is great and children loved going round it choosing something. It is all run by volunteers who work very hard to maintain the upkeep. So if able to give a donation when your there then please do so, it all helps.

A great place to visit! I hadn't even realised it was there. Originally went to East Lancs Railway. Saw this little spot when I crossed over to go and look at the castle over the road. Very glad I did spot it as it was very interesting 😊

  • 4/5 Peter R. 5 years ago on Google
Enjoyable with a nice ammout of interactive areas, my only downside is that it was a bit small. If you area planning on traveling on the steam trains and get the freedom of the line ticket the admission to the museum is included which is nice. Also the museum is conveniently situated very close to the stream train station.
